Troy will remove the interim tag from AD Kyle George, who has been leading the Trojans since August, per ESPN's Pete Thamel. Prior to being named Interim AD, George served as Deputy AD for External Relations since March 2017. (link)

More from Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris’ sitdown with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster last week. Harris weighed in on expanding March Madness: “I think there’s a certain magic to March Madness, and we should be careful not to impact the secret sauce that makes it so special. That said, I’m open to modest expansion. I’ve seen it work before. The Ivy League could benefit — on the women’s side, Columbia was the first team out in 2023, and with expansion, they’d have been in. On the men’s side, history shows we’ve been close some years. I don’t expect our AQ team would be in the opening round often. So yes, I’m open to it, as long as we protect what makes March Madness special — the Cinderella stories — and don’t extend it so long that people lose interest.” Harris on the five-year eligibility model: “I’m frustrated by all the eligibility lawsuits. We haven’t talked much about transfers — we’re not impacted much — but I care about the national landscape. The NCAA finally had a sensible rule: student-athletes could transfer once without sitting out. Then, court cases scuttled that reasonable regulation. Now, there’s consensus that five years might make sense, but those same court cases are blocking it. For us, it’s four years because that’s the normal degree progression. We do have graduates playing elsewhere — earning master’s or other degrees — and that’s wonderful.” (link)

Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery sits down with VH Consulting Founder Shoshanna Engel Lewis at the 2025 Women Leaders in Sports Convention and talks about the two major initiatives that have been her focus since taking over as commissioner – elevating the student-athlete experience and raising competitive excellence The two also discuss the best career advice Montgomery has received and what she tells young professionals to focus on now. Montgomery explains the league is finalizing the first phase of a revised strategic plan and will move it through governance with the expectation of unveiling it in early 2026. “I think that’s really going to boldly state who we are and what our priorities are as we continue to elevate…not only regionally but also nationally.” Montgomery also points out that student-athletes are embedded in the Big South’s governance structure and that their feedback directly shapes policy. The league office, she adds, actively listens at championships and other events, sometimes incorporating suggestions the following year. She gives an example from golf, where the conference adopted features from the PGA Tour—like personalized tees—to make the experience more professional and athlete-centered. Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene reflects on his first 12 months leading the Panthers: “Simply put, leadership matters. The leadership at Pitt is aligned and full of people who champion the success of their colleagues. Chancellor Gabel has assembled a dynamic senior leadership team that values collaboration as a foundational standard. We're a cohesive group that understands our purpose, is laser-focused on our strategy, communicates frequently and challenges each other to be better." On balancing tradition and innovation: “It's important to recognize and understand history and tradition. But it's equally important to recognize and understand where the industry is going and to position the department to thrive in the modern-day era of college athletics. What got us to where we are today, won't get us to where we want to be tomorrow. That means thinking and acting outside the box, even when it challenges what once was.” On competitive excellence: “We can do better. We've not done poorly, but there's an expectation that we do better, particularly in the outcomes which our fans care deeply about. But more importantly, it's about the process: how we support our coaches and student-athletes, what we prioritize and how we make decisions. The more consistently we keep the main things the main things, the better outcomes we'll have.” More. (link)

More from new ACC CRO Anthony Macri & host LMU AD Craig Pintens on the CRO.ticker Margins of Victory podcast. Macri explains how he’s executed data-driven sponsorship resets, recalling from his time with the Memphis Grizzlies that Chick-fil-A was “spending a decent amount, but we assessed that the value of their deal in assets based upon our peer markets and what those relationships were worth, that they were getting about roughly double in value what they were investing. And we had to have really tough conversations with a number of brands to say, guys, I'm sorry, this doesn't work and it doesn't work for us to really continue to grow and to be competitive on the court and otherwise to have you investing at a number that's lower than the value of what we are providing.” Macri on PE in college sports: “You have to start with the end in mind. What are you trying to accomplish and what are you willing, as you mentioned, to give up to get what you're trying to accomplish? And if you can answer those two questions, then I think you're willing at least to explore whether institutional capital can help you to get there. I think the big question, and that's what I think a lot of, whether it be the stuff we've seen in the news or otherwise, that's what folks are wrestling with. What are we willing to give up in order to get there and is the juice worth the squeeze?” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

Find out how much German apparel company Strauss stands to benefit from its decal placement on helmets during the MLB playoffs in the latest edition of CRO.ticker, which also includes insights into Gotham FC’s “Blueprint” season-ticketing strategy, Cadillac’s F1 plans, which feature an HQ/manufacturing campus that is “going to [be] almost like a modern ballpark entertainment district,” Gen Z’s “digital fatigue,” and this from Reddit/Seven Seven Six Ventures Founder Alexis Ohanian on AI: “Super-intelligence is now commoditized. Whatever your thoughts are on AI, at the end of the day, this is the worst it’s ever going to be. The ability for all of us to now tap into, in real time, PhD-level intelligence is trivial and that is a modern miracle. For people who are high agency, for people who are high curiosity, for people who are high getting things done, you have just been gifted superpowers.” Check it out. (link)

At 10 years old, Bruin Capital has evolved from a risky startup into a sports-focused investor with about $2.5B in assets under management, and SBJ’s Chris Smith notes the firm was built on an operator-led playbook and a signature early win: buying the NFL’s On Location with RedBird for $70M and selling it to Endeavor for $660M less than five years later. Founder George Pyne—shaped by hands-on stints at NASCAR and IMG—uses relationships and operational know-how to scale niche leaders, exemplified by Deltatre, acquired in 2016 and sold in 2022 for upward of $725M after earnings grew from roughly $12M to about $50M, and Two Circles, valued at $42M when acquired in 2019 and around $317M at exit in 2024. The firm’s edge, sources contend, is that its partners have run P&Ls and open markets for portfolio companies – especially bringing European assets into the U.S. – while Pyne now targets bigger, lower-return but transformative bets in areas like youth-sports-meets-tech and potentially college athletics. A fourth investment vehicle is on deck and headquarters are moving to Greenwich, as Pyne pledges another decade at the helm: “What I’ve had to learn the last 10 years was managing a financial investment firm, and I’m way ahead of that now than I was when I was there. Now with the resources that we have at our disposal, and the knowledge we have and the scale we have, we’re capable of a lot more. And that’s what, to me, is exciting. … We’ve been busy building it, but now I want to maximize it.” (link)

Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff is headed to Iowa City as Iowa welcomes Oregon to town next Saturday. (link) ESPN’s College GameDay, meanwhile, is making the trip to Lubbock for Texas Tech vs. BYU. (link)

Fox Sports’ President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill notes that “GameDay is a great show and they’re having a big year. You have to tip your cap. On our side Big Noon Kickoff is up +19% in the 11am hour. We like our show too and more total CFB pre-game viewing is a good thing.” Crakes Media namesake Patrick Crakes responds: “To me, the biggest strategic insight here is how much viewing these two shows drive together. It’s a huge validation of a sports first programming strategy that two shows that talk about live sporting events can co-exist across multiple distribution touch points at roughly the exact same time period for 14 weeks a year.  Too much of the reporting ties around nonsensical horse race “who’s winning this week” narratives and not enough deep looks into the strategic value creation both shows produce…Bottom line, both are winning… .” (link)

James Madison’s football team will host the first ever collegiate Marvel Super Hero Day on November 22 against Washington State at Bridgeforth Stadium. Per the release: “The first 15,000 fans in attendance will receive a voucher for a souvenir poster featuring Duke Dog and Marvel characters designed by Marvel Comics. There will also be 2,000 co-branded hats that will be given away at the game, and the day will feature Marvel activations and contests throughout the game both on the videoboard and on-field. Fans are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Marvel Super Hero. Other activations surrounding the day will be announced closer to the date of the game.” The deal was facilitated by AthLife, Inc., Marvel’s longtime sports representative, with JMU Foundation, Inc. In the wake of the NBA betting scandal, the league and its partner sportsbooks continue to review which types of bets are most vulnerable to manipulation and how much bettors should be allowed to wager on such bets, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who points out that “before the season, the NBA identified missed free throws, fouls and turnovers as types of wagers susceptible to manipulation and asked its partner sportsbooks not to offer those bets. FanDuel and DraftKings told ESPN that they had agreed to the NBA's request. FanDuel did not offer such wagers in past seasons; DraftKings had offered in-game betting on players making or missing free throws, but those offerings were not available before a game.” An NBA spokesperson tells Purdum that "prop bets on individual player performance can raise heightened integrity concerns and warrant additional scrutiny," adding that the league will continue to work closely with its sportsbook partners and continue evaluating current offerings. Both FanDuel and DraftKings insist the recent scandal only further solidifies that the system in place is effective, with a DraftKings rep saying: "Recent events demonstrate that the regulated sports betting industry is working as intended -- fostering an environment of collaboration between operators, leagues, regulators, law enforcement and integrity monitoring services to help uncover suspicious activity.” (link)

D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle sits down with Athletic Estate CEO Jonathan Hoeflinger and former Southland Commissioner/recent DI Basketball Committee Chair Tom Burnett to discuss how Athletic Estate is reshaping the business of college sports. At its core, Athletic Estate helps athletes turn short-term earnings into lifelong value. Through a structured estate system focused on financial literacy, AE ensures that athletes don’t outlive their money—while helping schools strengthen retention and legacy-building efforts. For administrators and collectives, AE delivers Portal Protection – a modern approach to recruitment and retention that safeguards investments in student-athletes. Portal Protection also introduces recovery and recoupment services that help programs stabilize budgets when athletes transfer or leave early. By embedding structured financial mechanisms into NIL and deferred-compensation models, AE helps institutions reclaim lost value and maintain consistency across roster planning, donor relations, and financial projections. Burnett: “We live in a sports world that incentivizes athletes to leave.“ Athletic Estate has built a model that incentivizes them to stay.” When athletes see their financial future supported by the same programs that developed them, loyalty follows naturally. The result is a shared framework where athletes build wealth responsibly, and schools protect both their culture and capital. Lots more in the full conversation. (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks squashes the rumors that LSU is coming after him for the Tigers open AD gig, writing via X: “Georgia fans — with success often comes speculation, but I want to address it directly. I have not been contacted by anyone at LSU, and more importantly, I have no interest in any other job. My full focus remains on the University of Georgia, our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans. I am very fortunate to work alongside President Morehead, the Athletic Association Board, Governor Brian Kemp, and the Board of Regents, who share a deep commitment to excellence and to the success of Georgia Athletics. This is home to me, and I’m honored to play a part in the incredible progress we’ve made together. The best days for Georgia Athletics are still ahead, and I look forward to continuing to build on the championship standard we’ve established here in Athens. Let’s go have some fun in Jacksonville! Go Dawgs!” (link)

The Athletic’s Grace Raynor writes on Virginia’s football success so far this season as Cavs AD Carla Williams remarks: “I think a lot of people externally may not have recognized how much needed to get done just to give the football program a chance to be successful. [It was] a program that just had a lot of things stacked against it.” Williams also acknowledges UVa must sustain this level of support to remain contenders in the ACC. “We’re just doing better. We’ve gotta continue to build this program like Tony has been building it since he’s been here.” Interesting perspective from Hoos HC Tony Elliott: “What’s really different about being a head coach is it truly is a lonely seat. There’s not many people that you can talk to. There’s a lot of things you can’t talk about with anybody just because of the sensitive nature of the things that come across your desk. So it’s a very lonely place at times. I think one of the biggest lies that football players believe is that we’re invincible and we can do everything. If we just work a little harder, if we just focus a little more, everything will be OK. And that’s the furthest thing from the truth.” (link)

Bloomberg dives into on-field logo additions across college football with Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan indicating his team has inked 30 such deals to date with price points ranging from $1M to $3.5M per season. Caveat: “While deals typically include other assets such as digital ads, it’s the on-field placement that accounts for most of the cost.” As for the potential of adding corporate logos to jerseys, Gahagan offers: “We are not waiting for that light to get switched on. We’re getting prepared now because we know that it’s coming. We know that the NCAA is going to get on board. A top-tier program has the opportunity to command anywhere between $10 and $15 million as a starting point.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports that SMU and Football HC Rhett Lashlee are finalizing a new two-year contract extension that will take him through 2032 and make him one of the top-10 highest-paid coaches in the sport. SMU boosters have told The Athletic they won’t lose Lashlee to another job over money. (link)

“Disingenuous. Manipulative. Ridiculous.” Per On3’s Brett McMurphy, those are “descriptions of college football coaches’ refusal to abide by the new availability reports” which thus far have faced little conference enforcement. With what McMurphy labels Utah’s “injury deception” over multiple instances of its handling of quarterback Devon Dampier’s availability, that resulted in no public repercussions from the Big 12, and a measly $5K fine from the Big Ten to USC over its handling of a final availability report prior to its game against Michigan as examples, one Power 4 AD remarked: “Until there are real penalties, it won’t matter. Nobody will take this seriously.” Another AD added: “If you want people to follow the rules, you need to incentivize coaches not to do it. Look at what the NFL does. Until a conference threatens to take away from the revenue share cap, something that really impacts a school, it ain’t gonna matter.” More. (link)

In the post-Week 9 edition of the College Football Officials/Media Rules Video, National Coordinator of Football Officials & Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw highlights an interesting trend emerging in onside kick data, observing: “So far in FBS this year, 101 onside kicks have been attempted and 20 have been successful, meaning the kicking team recovers the ball. That’s a 19.8% success rate, and that success rate is 5% higher than last year and almost 10% higher than our low mark in 2022.” (link)

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy will not appear on Big Noon Kickoff today but emphasizes that Barstool’s partnership with Fox remains strong despite the Big Ten taking itself “way too seriously” and pushing back on his Big Noon Kickoff appearances. As such, The Barstool College Football Show will air live from Starkville, Mississippi, next weekend as Mississippi State hosts Georgia. Portnoy: “I know this is 100% the truth. We have a great relationship with Fox, and I am not trying to make their lives more difficult because we have a great relationship. That is why we’re going to Mississippi State. … We have a great relationship with Fox Sports. They have been nothing but great working with us. It’s like the oppo-world of ESPN. So I’m not trying to agitate it … and I think they would probably echo a lot of the things we say, but this is our partner and we’re going to try and make this work as best we can with everybody. But I have no complaints with Fox. None, zero.” (link)

Pretty interesting perspective: New Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon explains why she listens in to coaches’ communications on the headphones during games: “I need to learn more about this. I need to be able to say is this person full of BS? Do they even know what they’re talking about? And I think one of the things that being on the headset has really helped me learn is…it’s such a complex organism, a football team and how it operates on game day. You can say, ‘Oh, that person ran that route wrong.’ When you learn to find someone tagged the wrong wide receiver, and it wasn’t really the player’s fault, it’s the person that called it. … It also helps us be able to know where we need to make tweaks. What resources do we need? What do we need to fix? So much of it comes down to just how we operate and how things work. I would suggest it for anyone else that has to pay coaches and GMs millions and millions of dollars. It really helps you make a less expensive mistake potentially.” (link)

Florida announces former Auburn Baseball HC Tom Slater has been hired as Associate HC & Acting HC for the Gators’ baseball program. Slater served as an assistant coach in Gainesville in 2004. Florida AD Scott Stricklin: “Tom Slater brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and deep Gator ties to this role. With more than three decades in college and professional baseball — including extensive experience in the SEC — he's earned universal respect across the game. We're excited to welcome him and Beth back to Gainesville.” (link)

Longtime USA Today reporter Steve Berkowitz announces via X that he is leaving the company after 25+ years. While his next move is TBD, he clarifies that it “doesn’t involve a beach chair.” (link)

Milwaukee expands its Learfield-brokered partnership with Bank Five Nine to prominently display the bank’s logo in two locations on the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena basketball court during all men’s basketball games throughout the multi-year deal, starting Monday against Hampton. (link)

Penn State has unveiled its new fencing facilities at the White Building, featuring 13 fencing strips with new scoring boxes for each, plus a light-up score box in the floor of the center strip. The two-year project was made possible through donations from sponsors and the family of former Nittany Lions HC Emmanuil G. Kaidanov. (link)

Netflix has retained Moelis & Co. to evaluate a prospective bid for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming business, according to Reuters’ Dawn Kopecki, Dawn Chmielewski and Amy-Jo Crowley, who note “owning Warner Bros' studio business would give Netflix control over some of Hollywood's most successful stories and characters, including the Harry Potter and DC Comics franchises. … Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos told investors last week that while the company is traditionally ‘more builders than buyers,’ it does evaluate acquisitions based on criteria such as the size of the opportunity and whether it would strengthen the company's entertainment offerings.” Sarandos: “We've been very clear in the past that we have no interest in owning legacy media networks. There is no change there.” Warner Bros Discovery and Moelis declined to comment on Reuters’ story, while Netflix could not be reached for comment. (link)
