From interim AD to permanent AD in quick fashion, LSU has a new full-time boss in Verge Ausberry. (link); Meanwhile, new LSU President Wade Rousse on contract dynamics for the next Football HC in Baton Rouge: “I do support the idea that we're going to try to base contracts on incentive base, or contracts are going to be based on incentives and how we win and how does that work and how we get paid based on winning. I'd like to think we could do that in our athletics contracts. We all know the market's the market. We are very determined to go find the absolute best coach there is to come take the best coaching job in America and come lead us to our next national championship. We have a global brand that's mostly driven by what happens in Tiger Stadium. There's no doubt in our mind that we are going to get the fit to make that happen.” (link); Also of note, though Rousse is technically the new LSU system president - with former Alabama Provost Jim Dalton named as Chancellor for the Baton Rouge campus, the LSU athletic department will flow up directly to Rousse. The first College Football Playoff rankings of the season were released last night & if the event started today here are your participants: Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, BYU, Texas Tech, Oregon, Notre Dame, Virginia & Memphis. Just on the outside at the moment: Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, Louisville. (link, link)

Baylor AD Mack Rhoades is the CFP Selection Committee chair this year & here are some of his notable comments on the initial rankings: “What happened last year does not matter. Conference affiliations do not matter. We focus solely on the individual teams. We consider teams' performance on the field, their strength of schedule, their head-to-head match-ups, and results against common opponents. [...] We have lots of data statistics that are studied, but the committee is subjective by design. Each person on the committee has a lot of work to do. We've watched the games. Let me repeat that; we watch the games. We study the stats, debate the merits of each team and then we vote. [...] I think we refer to it as art and science. I think the art is watching the team on film and tape and how good they are, how physical they are up front, offensive line, defensive line play, how good are they up the middle, their quarterback play, their skill players, and then certainly contemplating and looking at metrics. I know you know this, but not any one metric weighted heavier than the other. We use them all at our disposal to try to get the very best answer, and I think that's where the public misses out a little bit; just the beauty in this is the actual debate and discussion and conversation in the room when we're talking about all of those metrics.” More. (link)

Oregon State President Jayathi Murthy sat down with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher to touch on a handful of topics. On her role in the football HC hire: “I will absolutely be consulted. I don’t insert myself into the search process. That’s too much detail, and it’s a level of knowledge I wouldn’t have that Scott (Barnes) would have. He’s well set up. He’s got a great committee and a great search firm. They know exactly what they want. At some point in the process, where it’s suitable, I’ll definitely be called. But I depend on Scott. Scott knows what he’s doing.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir offers some perspective on the state of Football head coaching contracts: “When you double-down on a coach when you get the ‘agents’ that go out there and say, ‘So-and-so is trying to get him.’ As an athletic administration and as a president and a board, you have to have confidence (to say), ‘OK, leave. We’re not going to do a bad deal.’ If they leave, they leave. We’ll go out and hire another coach. [...] This year will be the year if it changes. But with everybody leveraging, and you’ve just seen what has happened the last three days with new deals being done, it doesn’t look like things are changing, does it? Am I missing something? People are being paid more. People are getting guaranteed more.” (link)

Army has inked a long-term extension with Learfield that will see the pair continue working together through 2035-36. Black Knights AD Tom Theodorakis: “There was a window for us to sit down, and it worked out well, almost organically, with being in this position to kind of say, ‘Hey, where are we at? How do things look and how can we maximize opportunities?’ “We want to be aggressive, and we want to find ways to continue to elevate our brand and who we are and associate ourselves with really good partners.” Theodorakis also commented on the in-progress $170M renovation to Michie Stadium: “That’s the future of our athletic department. It’s not just a football building. ... This is kind of like renovating our kitchen. It’s an opportunity for us to keep the unique, traditional feel of Michie Stadium but make modern amenities, which was very much needed.” Leona assisted on the deal. (link)

As part of the GM Spotlight series, The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. Q&A’s with North Texas GM Raj Murti on his journey, the challenges of winning at a Group of 6 program in the NIL/rev share era and planning for the transfer portal. Speaking about building a winning roster on a lean budget, Murti remarked: “You don’t overpay. You keep your priorities and your values. … You don’t get big-eyed in the heat of the moment, keep your composure and understand that this is part of it. If another school wants to overspend for somebody, you’ve got to have a number that you’re like, ‘I’m not going higher than this.’ As long as you have some kind of thought process and your thought process aligns with your evaluation process, which then aligns with your valuation process and how much to pay them. I’m going to sit down and watch the tape. Our DPP and assistant DPP are going to watch the tape. The coaches are going to watch the tape. And once we all see it the same way, we look at our roster and say, ‘OK, where does this kid fit?’ And it’s such a hard thing to project, because you’re trying to project where a high school kid or a junior college (prospect) or a transfer fits before you can even negotiate what next year’s contracts are with your current team. … So you have to be aligned in the staff from the personnel department to the position coach to the coordinator to the head coach, so we know where a kid fits and there’s a dollar range for that spot on the roster and we’re all on the same page and we’re not gonna overpay to try to get him.” Lots more. (link)

As the coaching cycle continues to spin, D1.relocation COO Ernest Firth III describes the concept of the DORO – a Director of Relocation Operations: " Our goal at D1.relocation isn't merely to transport your belongings from point A to point B. It's to transport your family from one chapter to the next with minimal stress and maximum support. It's about delivering peace of mind, ensuring that when you step onto that new campus, you and your family are settled, supported, and ready to thrive." (link)

ABC scored three of college football week 10’s best four games including Georgia vs. Florida (7.8M viewers, 10.4M peak), Oklahoma vs. Tennessee (4.8M, 6.0M peak) and Vanderbilt vs. Texas (4.5M). Up 18% YOY to an average of 2.2M viewers, ESPN networks are off to the best start for CFB since 2010. This is the ninth straight week that ABC claimed the top game across all networks. (link); Over on Fox, Ohio State vs. Penn State scored 7.19M viewers, making it the most-watched noon game on any network and marks a 28% increase over last year’s BIG NOON SATURDAY game average. Boise State announces that all ledge seats within the North End Zone Project at Albertsons Stadium are sold out. Construction began in January, which will add approximately 1,600 premium seating options, including loge boxes which sold out in May, and is on track for completion prior to the 2026 football season. (link)

Seeking to answer the question of who’s selling the most booze at football games thus far in 2025, Extra Points’ Matt Brown “filed open records requests to 45 public institutions at the start of October, asking for total alcohol unit sales numbers for home games across August and September, as well as the total revenue.” In all, 21 institutions responded, and after analyzing the data from the first month of the season, Wisconsin topped the list for both total revenue from alcohol sales ($3.088M) and revenue-per-fan ($15.08). Brown: “Some schools were unable to share data with us because they do not control their own concession sales. … Other schools, like Ohio State, are only able to run numbers at the end of the season. [...] We weren’t able to collect enough data to get a good geographic cross-section of fans, but my educated guess is schools in the Great Lakes region are going to over-index on stadium consumption relative to their peers out west, or even in the Southeast (where there miiiiiight be a greater tradition of doing more of that drinkin’ in the parking lot). What’s wild is that this data set only included three home games for Wisconsin: out of conference wins over Miami (OH) and MTSU and a loss in its Big Ten opener against Maryland. Many of the other leading power programs, like LSU, Nebraska and Tennessee, also played early games at neutral sites, and concession sales from those games wouldn’t be included in the data.” More. LSU selects McNeese State President Wade Rousse for the same role and taps Alabama Provost Jim Dalton as both Chancellor and EVP for the Baton Rouge campus, marking the first time the University will have separate system and main campus leaders since the roles were merged in 2012. (link)

Rutgers AD Keli Zinn visits with The Knight Report Podcast to discuss facility plans for the Scarlet Knights. Zinn: “Obviously, Jersey Mike’s Arena is currently sitting at the top of that list. … We’ve got some significant progress that needs to be made in supporting basketball and also gymnastics and wrestling, that live in that venue, from a purely fan experience and amenity [standpoint], right? There’s nothing in that building that’s going to harm the true competitive side of it. The court’s fine. The arena’s incredible. The atmosphere that I’m told exists there is going to be really, really impressive and in some cases, second to none. It’s everything outside of that bowl. Now, admittedly, I’d love to see a new centerhung and some of those things that again speak to the fan amenities to probably create a little better experience for the athletes, but mostly the fans. When you look at restrooms and premium and just the navigation of that building, seating to a certain degree, there’s a lot of room for improvement. So, that’s a focal point. One, because of the number of people who come through there, but then also what opportunity exists. … The only thing standing in the way of being a premier program in those programs is that competitive arena and putting it in a place where we have a ton of fans and folks showing up every time they take the court or the mat. … You’ve got a lot of the pieces. Our goal is to check all those boxes and then you have everything you need to be successful and compete at the highest level.” More from Zinn. (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie sat down with the Old Gold & Black’s Benjamin Pappas and had this to say on his role as an AD: “I work to deliver on the five core goals of athletics at Wake Forest: creating a world-class student-athlete experience; integrity in academics, compliance, finance, inclusion and safety; value to the university and Winston-Salem and Triad communities; winning championships and creating the best fan experience in North Carolina.” On encouraging high student turnout and his goals for the student fan experience: “A lot of people come to Wake Forest familiar with the Big Four and the ACC, but others come from places where college athletics aren’t a big deal. So we have to educate students. Why is it a big deal that we’re a part of the Big Four? Why is it a big deal that Wake Forest and NC State have the second-oldest continuous football rivalry in the country? Why is it important that we’ve won 11 national championships? There’s a lot of education that goes into it. … I also think that building moments of tradition into the games is important. At football games, for instance, they introduced a new tradition where they play a specific song at the end of the first quarter. So we’re getting people into a pattern of knowing that song so that at future games, everybody sings it.” More. (link)

KGET’s Sangmin Kim has more on former Cal State Bakersfield AD Kyle Conder’s lawsuit accusing CSUB of wrongful termination in retaliation for an internal softball investigation that blew up into a public scandal involving allegations of crime and abuse. Per the lawsuit, Conder said he “reported [softball student-athlete Violet] Salazar’s family’s allegations to campus police as he viewed it as an urgent case of campus safety and violation of Title IX,” purportedly an action “legally protected as whistleblowing activity under state law and Title IX.” Kim: “The lawsuit said Conder was one of the only administrators who listened to and validated the concerns brought forth by the student-athletes. Although several student-athletes felt some administrators dismissed their stories that contradicted Salazar and [Assistant Softball Coach James] Davenport thought information shared in confidential meetings with [CSUB VP of People & Culture Lori] Blodorn was ‘leaking back to Salazar,’ the lawsuit said Conder did everything he could to protect students and support the investigation. [...] Blodorn allegedly told Conder the ‘purported’ reason for his firing was his mishandling of the softball incident when he reported it to the university police rather than the Title IX coordinator. [...] The complaint alleges [President Vernon B.] Harper and Blodorn ‘wrongly believed’ the student athletes would cease their lawsuit if they dismissed Conder as Conder played a big role in bringing internal and external attention to the allegations.” Conder alleges CSUB refused to go forward with a settlement the two agreed on that would have undone “the worst consequences against Conder.” More. (link)

Appearing alongside Kentucky Deputy AD Marc Hill on the latest Access Louisville podcast, Louisville AD Josh Heird had this to say regarding contract length for student-athletes: “I think in a perfect world, multi-year agreements would benefit the institutions, but they’re gonna benefit the institutions more than they’re gonna benefit the student-athlete, the individual. If you’re in a position where you have leverage, why are you gonna give that away? You’re not negotiating with an 18- or 19-year-old. You’re negotiating, most of the time, with very successful, very smart agents and we have to keep that in mind. ‘Well, just make them sign a two-year deal.’ They’re not gonna sign a two-year deal because they don’t have to. Once again, as this is evolving, can we put ourselves in a position where maybe that is a negotiable deal point? Right now, it’s really not. Quite honestly, even if they said ‘hey, we’re gonna sign a two-year deal.’ Now, if you pay all the money up front, yeah, you could go sue them and try to get that money back, but if you’re paying them monthly, and they say ‘hey, I signed a two-year deal and I’m out. I don’t want to be here,’ are we really gonna sue a 19-year-old?” More. (link)

Xavier receives an endowment from alum Fred Irwin and his wife Linda Chamness to name the AD position after the Harmon family for their contributions to XU. AD Greg Christopher: “This makes the eighth endowed position for Xavier Athletics. Permanent endowments like these strengthen the foundation of Xavier Athletics, allowing our annual operating resources to further support student-athletes.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini regrades the 2021-22 college football coaching carousel, noting that of the 29 coaching hires during that cycle, “21 received at least one A-range grade from The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, ESPN or CBS Sports. On a regrade, only nine received a grade in the A range. Six left for other jobs or retired, eight were fired and 15 are still in their current roles.” Overall, Vannini graded 11 jobs as a full letter grade worse than the lowest ranking coming out of the 2021-22 coaching cycle. The jobs that regraded higher than the initial reaction include Oregon HC Dan Lanning, New Mexico State HC Jerry Kill, former Troy HC/current Tulane HC Jon Sumrall and Connecticut HC Jim Mora. Among the highlighted coaching hires from 2021-22 were recently fired Florida HC Billy Napier and LSU HC Brian Kelly. With Napier’s hire originally pegged as either an A or A-, on a regrade, Vannini handed the Gators a D+, noting “Napier looked like a brilliant hire at the time. But it went terribly,” posting a 22-23 in four seasons with one winning season. Kelly received grades stretching from A to B+ (ESPN) when he joined the Bayou Bengals, but on a regrade, LSU was saddled with a C. More grades. (link)

➤ USC Interim President Beong-Soo Kim notes the institution is “on track” to eliminate its long-term deficit by the end of the fiscal year after issuing over 900 layoff notices since July, according to Higher Ed Dive’s Natalie Schwartz. USC finished FY25 with an operating deficit over $200M, up from $158M in FY24. Kim doesn’t expect any additional layoffs for the rest of the calendar year. USC Assoc. VP of Client Services Melissa Gerdes-Leonard mentioned “cutbacks in funding and necessary budget reductions” triggered the latest round of cuts that included 259 employees. (link)

With other institutions across the country looking to eliminate varsity sports to save money, Fairleigh Dickinson is doing the opposite by adding Men’s Fencing for 2027. Per Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, it’s a move FDU Assistant VP/Deputy AD Jason Young says should provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual net profit once the team is fully formed. Novy-Williams: “Fairleigh Dickinson’s plan, according to Young, is to start with 10 male fencers in 2027 and grow to a full team of 24 by 2030. If the Knights eventually spread six full scholarships across the program, that could be 18 additional tuitions, which, for this year, is about $37,300 per student. For a small, private, enrollment-driven school like FDU, those students slot in with little additional stress on the university’s broader infrastructure. In addition to the financial lift, FDU is hoping adding fencing helps with a few broader macro challenges. The school, which competes in the Northeast Conference, has not yet opted into the House settlement, but it intends to, and this could offset any spots lost due to the new roster limit rules.” Young: “We had a $3.8M deficit in 2020. Once we rolled out that strategic plan, we were down about $430K last year and are trending toward being net profitable this year.” More. (link)

USC Men’s Basketball HC Eric Musselman has started aggressively marketing his program through viral videos and student engagement aimed at boosting interest, per the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, who notes average Galen Center attendance “fell to just over 5K per night last season,” down from more than 6K in the final year of the Andy Enfield era. Utilizing lessons on the "power of promotion" gleaned from his father and longtime college and pro coach Bill, Musselman has begun making Instagram videos, imploring his players to play a part of marketing both the program and themselves, and undergone efforts such as spending hours with staff handing out flyers across campus in hopes of drumming up interest.  Musselman: “It’s not a traditional approach. But we just can’t do things here that are traditional. We have to create uniqueness in our market. If you don’t want any fans, don’t do anything, just coach your team. If you want fans, you’ve gotta win — that’s No. 1. You’ve gotta have star players — that’s No. 2. Your style of play matters, that’s No. 3. And you’ve got to connect. I don’t see how you have unbelievable attendance unless you connect with the students. That’s just my personal belief being here for a year. And this year, we are drastically different in how we’re trying to connect.” More. (link)

Former Indiana Women’s Volleyball AC Brett Agne has received a two-year show cause order and a suspension from 10 regular-season contests (the equivalent of 30% of the regular season) in 2026 for sports betting violations involving the placing of impermissible bets on professional and collegiate games over a five-month period. While he didn’t wager on IU Volleyball, Agne did bet on other Indiana teams, utilizing online betting platforms to place more than 700 bets totaling $327K. Of those bets, 27 were on the Hoosier Football or Men’s Basketball programs. Agne claims to have utilized an unregulated computer program to place bets on games automatically based on an algorithm, and as a result, he was not aware of which games he was betting on — including the Indiana games. The Big Ten holds down three of the top four spots in average attendance through Week 10, led by Michigan (110,735) and Penn State (107,877) with Ohio State (104,909) ranking fourth. The SEC accounts for the remainder of the top 11, guided by Texas A&M (105,931). Overall, the two conferences combine for 21 of the 23 highest average attendance marks across college football.
