Delaware Interim President Laura Carlson announces that Interim AD Jordan Skolnick “has been invited to formally interview as a finalist for the role of UD director of athletics and campus recreation. … An advisory committee is being formed, and a formal review process will take place before the end of the semester, with an opportunity for Skolnick to address the campus community and to gather community input. Additional information about the schedule and the advisory committee roster will be forthcoming.” (link)

Sun Belt Commissioner & NCAA Selection Committee Chair Keith Gill visits with Basket Under Review’s Rocco Miller and offers up his take on the potential of NCAA Tournament expansion: “I don't think there's the perfect answer for it. … We live in a politically charged, super polarized environment with no nuance, no gray, everything is A-or-B or black-or-white. And what I would say is we don't make all the right decisions, but we have a thoughtful group. We've got a great NCAA staff. We've got a great committee. They're thoughtful. We feel like we're stewards of this championship and it is the most important thing that we do and that the NCAA does. And so, I would just say to everyone, just know that the committee is giving the appropriate care and deliberation to the exercise. It may not be the answer that everybody thinks it should be and I think that's okay, and let's have that debate. But let's not take it farther than it is because we love basketball. We love the tournament. We love the championship. It's all been a real important part of all of our lives and we're going to do everything we can to protect it, to promote it and to make sure that it is as good as it can be for future generations. If they at least give us that kind of benefit of the doubt, that's all we can ask for. I'm not asking for people to agree with what we decide, but certainly understand that it comes from the right place and the right mindset, even if they don't think it's the right decision.” (link)

More American Commissioner Tim Pernetti on the JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast. Discussing the league’s re-brand: “It goes all the way back to April of 2024 when I first got the phone call … about the American job. I started to do my research … and I started to dig in and I think I googled AAC one day and everything in Google defaulted to the ACC. I remember making a note, literally writing a note down to talk to the presidents about this, saying this is a problem, right? … There's an identity problem there. … We talked to hundreds of people on campuses, from student athletes to professors to athletic directors and presidents and what I realized was everybody had a different point of view on what the brand stood for. To me it wasn't a brand, it was just a name. [...] I want the American to be known as the most innovative conference in America. … It's a low ego, blue collar, just tough, tough league, and grit just jumped off the page at us. And then service, I think is the last one that’s a hugely important part of any organization. In college sports, you service huge communities of people that literally, sports is such a huge part of their lifestyle that they invest their disposable income in and they look for great experience in. We have to remind ourselves that we also are an organization that's built on service.” (link)

The California State University Board of Trustees will consider approving naming rights for Long Beach State’s sporting and events facility. Currently called the Mike and Arline Walter Pyramid, the 12-year, $8.5M agreement would rename the venue as the “LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.” The Walters, who originally named the Pyramid in 2004, making both a cash donation and a planned gift commitment, have “agreed to step away from the naming in the interest of clearing the way for a significant new investment in the Beach Athletics programs.” (link)

As both are regularly mentioned as potential candidates for current openings, Georgia Tech Football HC Brent Key & Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham have said in recent days they plan to be on the sidelines at their alma maters next season. (link, link)

In the second part of a two-part series on this season’s college football coaching carousel, Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken examines why so many big-money hires flame out and if the mountain of buyouts schools have committed to spending this year will prompt a rethink in how schools evaluate coaches and hand out contracts in the player compensation era. An individual with an inside view on multiple searches: “A lot of presidents and ADs would love to say, ‘You know what? We’re going to hire this rising coordinator and pay him $2M because we need to invest in players.’ But they know if it backfires, they’ll lose their career. It would take a lot of courage.” An individual who works with schools on coach evaluations: “This is like what Hollywood’s been dealing with for 1,000 years. Who knows what’s going to make a hit? You really don’t know. The problem is, their jobs are dependent on knowing.” Why are so many bad hires made? A coaching industry veteran remarks: “The process is just so bad. The search firms will get guys on these 30-minute Zooms and the ADs don’t know what questions to ask because they don’t have football expertise and then everyone’s surprised it doesn’t work out. If you don’t know the intricacies of what matters in the game today, and you don’t know what affects winning, how can you know who to hire next?” More. (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown examines James Madison’s upcoming “Marvel Super Hero Day” promotion that, among other activations, is set to include the unveiling of special football helmets featuring Marvel Superheros on one side for its Nov. 22 football match-up against Washington State. JMU Assistant AD for Creative Services and Fan Engagement Melissa Wyant: “Marvel is a huge brand, and one that we’ve seen work with professional sports. We wanted to understand what that might look like at the college level.” Brown: “...it’s one thing to just tell your fans to dress up in superhero costumes. It’s another thing altogether to be the first athletic department to specifically partner with (and license) Marvel. Those conversations, Wyant told me, started with Athlife, the marketing agency Marvel uses for sports activations. Over a series of conversations, JMU was able to figure out what options were potentially available for a collegiate partnership — and what sorts of things would fit at JMU’s price point. The JMU athletics foundation handled the financial component of the deal (and specific terms were not disclosed).” Wyant: “We know that if we can get a 7-year-old here to a game, to our campus … that our chances of getting that person to come back are very good. If we’re able to reach new audiences and tell the story of JMU football, then this would be a huge success. JMU is the sort of place that is ambitious and aggressive, that wants to do more with less. Don’t be afraid to pitch big and bold ideas. You never know what might turn into something.” More. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker has sent a letter imploring Congress to grant the Association protections around eligibility standards for college athletes. From Baker’s letter: “I write to bring your attention to the ongoing attack on the essential eligibility and academic rules that are the foundation of college sports. This year alone, we have seen dozens of challenges to these rules, jeopardizing college sports as we know them. The NCAA’s eligibility and academic rules are what ensure that college sports are played by college student-athletes, and that a strong connection remains between college athletics and academics. [...] The courts’ chiseling away of the NCAA’s ability to enforce eligibility rules is destabilizing and threatening college sports. [...] Congress must take action, and legislation must include limited antitrust protection to allow the NCAA to promulgate fair, sensible eligibility and academic rules.” Full letter. (link)

LSU clarifies it’s moving forward with Verge Ausberry as permanent AD with a source in the president’s office telling LouisianaSports.net’s Matt Moscona: “Verge Ausberry is THE athletic director at LSU. Period. There is no intent or desire to play word games with this issue. Athletics needs a stable hand at the helm, and that is Verge Ausberry. Verge is fully empowered to find our next football coach and to run the athletic department.” The source also added “there are no plans to conduct a search for a new athletic director once the football coach is hired.” (link)

UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone secures a contract extension that could keep her leading the Bulldogs through May 2027. Chancellor Kimberly van Noort: “Under her leadership, UNC Asheville's athletic program has flourished—our student-athletes continue to excel both in competition and the classroom. Her ongoing commitment is essential to the future success of our university.” (link)

American Commissioner Tim Pernetti joins JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast to share his thoughts on private equity coming into college sports. “It's definitely coming. I've never been more convinced. … It's definitely going to happen, without a doubt, whether it happens at a conference level or maybe more likely at an individual institution, it's happening. … I don't know if it's been a holdup. What I would tell you is college presidents and athletic directors are being really smart in that they're getting educated, right? … When I started, I got very loud about private capital as an opportunity, but we spent a year educating people. … I brought other groups in. We spent the year meeting with people, vetting opportunities, sketching out sort of like ‘what could the structure look like.’ But most of all, getting educated. … College is just a different animal and everybody's saying private equity, equity. What our ADs and presidents know from me, bringing people in to educate them, is there's a hundred ways to finance these deals and structure them and do them. From our standpoint, I‘d love to be first, but we’ve got to get it right and to get it right, this is as much about finding the right partner as it is the capital. Capital is a commodity right now. It's out there. It can be had, if you want it, you can get it. I've told our presidents you could borrow against your endowments at 3% if you want it right now. But to grow the commercial enterprise, you need to be in business with someone that has the capital and also has resources, if not owns a company in the commercial space, that can help you come in and supercharge what you do. The capital's great, but we need the expertise. … The capital's out there, but finding the right partner, you really have to work hard to thread that needle.” More. (link)

The News & Observer’s Jaydn Watson-Fisher and Shelby Swanson discern where North Carolina, Duke and NC State stack up under the ACC’s new viewership incentive model. Per the authors, “North Carolina has already surpassed its performance last season. But since blowout losses have mounted and interest has waned, UNC’s early-season hype has largely failed to translate into sustained viewership. In a conference where viewership now directly affects revenue, that’s a bigger problem. [...] ESPN was primed to broadcast ‘eight, if not 10’ of North Carolina’s games this fall. But UNC’s 2-3 start — which saw North Carolina get outscored 120-33 by its P4 opponents — cooled ESPN’s appetite for [Football HC Bill] Belichick’s squad.” Overall, Duke ranks second in the Triangle and No. 10 overall in the ACC with its most-viewed game having taken place “in the nonconference slate when the Blue Devils hosted Illinois on Sept. 6, averaging 2.18M viewers. The team’s second-most watched game came against Georgia Tech on Oct. 18, with 1.7M viewers. [...] NC State is last in the state and second-worst in the ACC with 3.7M viewers this season. Its best game came in Week 3 when it received 1.2M viewers for its 34-24 win at Wake Forest to open the ACC slate. The Wolfpack ranks 15th out of all ACC teams after playing four games on non-rated channels ACC Network, ESPN+ and Peacock.” More. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides the latest figures from NIL Go, noting there have been 12,175 deals cleared at a value of $87.5M with 394 not cleared (value $10.01M) and none currently in arbitration. In all, “74% of deals reaching resolution cleared in seven days,” while “deals resolved in October cleared 21% faster than September.” Dellenger also adds the “CSC [is] not releasing deals actively under review.” The NIL Go platform currently services 33,247 student-athlete, 1,251 institution and 3,819 representative users. (link)

Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger examines the “most expensive coaching carousel in college football history,” noting industry leaders highlight four reasons for such an active cycle, “Money: There is an increased financial impact of losing on programs that, more than ever, find themselves in a stressful monetary situation with the onset of athlete revenue-sharing. [...] Playoffs: There is a shift in expectations of the definition of a ‘good season,’ from eight or nine wins and a trip to a warm and sunny New Year’s Day Bowl, to a playoff-or-bust mentality where elimination from the postseason tournament (three losses) is a fireable offense. [...] Last year: A slow cycle in 2024 (just five power conference jobs turned over) has impacted the rate of firings this year. [...] Age of Outrage: New generations of fans, reared on social media and instant results, are slim on patience and are filling home stadiums with chants to fire some of the most successful coaches in modern college football history.” Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin: “Think about it, we talk about the players now are like NFL players with how they are paid. Now I feel like the college coaches are more like NFL coaches where the firings happen quicker. You see it all the time, NFL coaches are one or two years. It’s a product of things that happen.” More. (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Football HC Luke Fickell will remain in his role in 2026. McIntosh: “Chancellor (Jennifer) Mnookin and I are aligned on significantly elevating investment in our program to compete at the highest level. We are willing to make an investment in infrastructure and staff. As important, is our ability to retain and recruit players in a revenue share and NIL era. […] Our intention is to be, in terms of our investment, on par with those that we intend to compete with. Our expectations are to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten and beyond.” (link)

Former Northwestern Football HC Pat Fitzgerald says he feels “100% vindicated” in the wake of the August settlement from his $130M wrongful termination suit against the school. “I feel very fortunate. I feel fully vindicated. It's been great working through this process. There's been conversations with a lot of folks. It's been face-to-face, it's been on Zoom, it's been phone calls. [My candidacy has] been received very well.” (link)

Rice has unveiled its $120M Gateway Project, an initiative on university-owned land in Rice Village that will create a pedestrian-friendly corridor linking the campus to the heart of the Village, while reimagining the west side of campus anchored by the renovation of Rice Stadium. The new street will feature major infrastructure upgrades, including new drainage, sewer and water lines, and will be designed to attract a mix of uses, including retail, multifamily housing, restaurants and a grocery store. A public greenspace is planned to host community events and performances. (link)

PENN Entertainment and ESPN have mutually agreed upon the early termination of their exclusive U.S. online sports betting agreement, effective Dec. 1. As a result, all outstanding payments to ESPN will cease in the fourth quarter of 2025 and leading up to and after the termination date, ESPN will work with PENN to facilitate a transition from ESPN BET to theScore Bet. The original agreement, announced in August 2023, had an initial term of 10 years, with the right for either party to terminate the agreement after the third year if specific market share performance thresholds were not met. (link, link); ESPN quickly announced an agreement with DraftKings as the exclusive Official Sportsbook and Odds Provider of ESPN, effective December 1, 2025. Draftkings will power the betting tab within the ESPN app with customers receiving special promotions for ESPN Unlimited, the broadcast company’s newly launched direct-to-consumer product. (link)
