Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports “nearly 60 Division I schools - including 24 in the power leagues - have logged votes in the NCAA’s digital portal to rescind the decision to permit athletes to wager on pro sports. Schools have until Nov. 21 to vote. A two-thirds majority of the 361 active DI schools is needed to rescind.” (link)

The NCAA has warned schools that the ongoing government shutdown may end up disrupting the fall championships with the Association having sent a memo to its member schools this morning saying it is “monitoring the impact and risk” of the ongoing shutdown. The 2025 fall championships require more than 1,000 trips to more than 350 preliminary and final sites, according to the memo. While headquarters did not go into any specifics about how its travel team intends to mitigate travel issues, the organization said it is “exploring” its options “since this is an issue that cannot be controlled by the national office or the membership. Rest assured that the national office staff is committed to working on these potential issues so the student-athletes, coaches and administrators can have great experiences competing for national championships this fall.” (link)

More on this topic - and as you likely know - the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to cut flights at 40 airports around the nation as air traffic controllers miss paychecks. Around 780 flights were canceled today as of this afternoon, equivalent to 3% of all flights, with CNBC’s Leslie Josephs and Laya Neelakandan adding: “According to the FAA’s order, the flight cuts will increase to 10% over the next week, beginning with 4% on Friday, 6% by Tuesday, 8% by Thursday and finally 10% on Nov. 14.” (link)

UMass held a Friday press conference to officially introduce Thorr Bjorn as Senior Deputy AD/Chief Administrative Officer. Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford notes the addition of Bjorn was fully his idea, adding: “You see this a lot at the Power 4 level, you see a lot of ADs hiring other ADs. I just kind of felt like it was the next step we needed to take to ultimately grow not only the football program, but our athletics program and athletics department. … I think in this day and age, I’m being pulled in a lot of different directions. … You see it at the NFL level. You see it at the Power 4 level. I can’t be everywhere I need to be. I need to go fight for this program externally. I need to drive NIL revenue. I need to go engage donors around facility projects. I need to go meet with trustees and the president’s office and the chancellor and advocate for what we’re trying to do. All of those things are hard to do when you also want to be at football practice two hours a day. It’s just not possible and I recognized that. I was spreading myself thin, and candidly, I wasn’t great in any one area and that’s hard to do. I think a lot of times in leadership, you have to figure out how to check your ego and say ‘what’s the best thing for the organization?’ … This was a decision in the best interest of the organization to bring somebody here who can help our football program … drive excellence. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. I’m excited to have that partner in Thorr that I know will lend his expertise. … The way that I view him and the way that we connect will ultimately help carry this program forward.” Much more. The Providence Journal’s Bill Koch examines what Rhode Island’s next AD will be facing moving forward after the recent departure of longtime department stalwart Thorr Bjorn. Koch: “Fundraising has always been critical in the job, but never more so than now. Fans can directly influence the department in ways that have never been legally accessible to them before – donations to the school’s NIL collective, revenue from sporting events and media rights to share. Could URI cut through any existing state red tape and opt to restructure its department on parallel tracks? Finance and everyday operations could operate in separate worlds to service the same end goal. [...] Kingston is in the middle of a football renaissance, and that could have greater influence on a final [AD] decision than when Bjorn was hired away from UMass. Meade Stadium will undergo a $42M renovation that should be completed by the start of the 2027 season. The Rams rarely spend that sort of cash on one specific project – it's a statement of intent to remain at or near the top of the CAA and in the FCS playoff mix for years to come.” URI Football HC Jim Fleming: “There’s an expectation now that wasn’t here when I got here. An expectation of winning, an expectation of continuing to compete for championships – the next person up in his position is going to have to be one who sees that as a mission for the university.” More. The NCAA Committee on Infractions has released three separate infractions decisions after NCAA enforcement investigations uncovered sports-betting violations by six student-athletes who competed in men's basketball at New Orleans, Mississippi Valley and Arizona State. As a result of the violations, the student-athletes all violated ethical conduct rules, triggering permanent ineligibility, and the individuals — Cedquavious Hunter, Dyquavian Short, Jamond Vincent, Donovan Sanders, Alvin Stredic and Chatton "BJ" Freeman — are no longer enrolled at their previous schools. The cases were resolved via negotiated resolution in coordination with the student-athletes' institutions, per infractions process operating procedures. Hunter and Sanders declined to participate in their respective cases. Short, Vincent and Stredic were unresponsive to enforcement staff as their respective cases were processed. Freeman participated in a negotiated resolution and agreed to his violations. The Committee on Infractions does not currently assess penalties for student-athletes who violated NCAA rules but did approve the findings, confirming that the violations occurred. Those found to have violated NCAA rules are ineligible and can only be reinstated with the assistance of an NCAA school. More. (link)

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Mark Stewart provides a construction update on Wisconsin’s $285M Kellner Family Athletic Center practice facility project, noting Phase 1, which includes 120 yards of field, a 305-meter track, office space and under-field parking, is scheduled for completion by July. The second phase will start in April with the demolition of the McClain Center. On that site, a student-athlete support facility including new locker rooms, a weight training facility, a sports medicine center and a dining hall will be built with completion slated for fall 2027. UW AD Chris McIntosh: “It's a huge step forward, not just for our football program, but for our entire athletic department. It's been made possible by a lot of very, very generous people and supporters. It was necessary for us to do that alongside of (and) on a parallel path with everything that's been changing in college athletics and college football, but I don't think that those two things are mutually exclusive. I think they all complement each other. And like I said, when you put the pieces of the puzzle together, I think it causes me to remain optimistic.” (link)

The West Virginia Board of Governors approved plans today for premium seating at Hope Coliseum and granted Mountaineers AD Wren Baker the go-ahead to move forward with the West Tower/Press Box project at Milan Puskar Stadium. On the latter, Baker remarked: “We are approaching that $85-$90M commitment mark. When we get to $100M I think this is a full go.” With today’s approval, an architect can be hired to move the project from conceptual phase to bid phase. Once the next steps are approved, the work could begin following the 2026 football season. (link)

Rice radio voice J.P. Heath provides both model and rendering pics of the Owls’ Gateway Project to renovate Rice Stadium that’s expected to be completed by 2028. Heath adds: “14 suites will be added! And our new broadcast booth will be much lower and closer. The new club level will be where much of the current concourse is on the home side. About 3500-4000 seats will remain on the east side. The Pavilion will be next to the current practice field.” Take a look. (link)

“We have brought ticket prices down. If you look, they’re significantly cheaper (than in 2022) in different areas of the stadium. [...] We’ve heard from our fan base. Lower ticket prices. We’ve lowered ticket prices. Give us more amenities with our season ticket. We’ve done that. We want to see a better product on the field. We’ve delivered that. [...] I think a winning product on the field is the thing that, hopefully, should fuel that and start moving people back.” That’s San Diego State AD John David Wicker in response to questions about football ticket prices and their relation to attendance. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond recently sent a letter to the Aztecs concerning ticket prices, offering to work “to explore creative ways to make SDSU football more accessible for San Diegans — whether through family-friendly ticket packages, local community nights, or discounts through my office that encourage attendance and engagement.” Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney, Desmond wrote to share a “growing concern I’ve heard from residents across San Diego County: the high cost of attending SDSU football games at Snapdragon Stadium. [...] Seeing thousands of empty seats — despite a winning season and strong fan interest — has been disappointing. For many families, the cost of tickets, parking, and concessions can easily reach several hundred dollars, making it difficult to attend even a single game. [...] When something as special as cheering on our hometown team becomes unaffordable, it’s a sign that we’ve drifted away from the community spirit that public institutions like SDSU should represent.” More. Sun Belt Commissioner & NCAA Selection Committee Chair Keith Gill visits with Basket Under Review’s Rocco Miller and offers up his take on the potential of NCAA Tournament expansion: “I don't think there's the perfect answer for it. … We live in a politically charged, super polarized environment with no nuance, no gray, everything is A-or-B or black-or-white. And what I would say is we don't make all the right decisions, but we have a thoughtful group. We've got a great NCAA staff. We've got a great committee. They're thoughtful. We feel like we're stewards of this championship and it is the most important thing that we do and that the NCAA does. And so, I would just say to everyone, just know that the committee is giving the appropriate care and deliberation to the exercise. It may not be the answer that everybody thinks it should be and I think that's okay, and let's have that debate. But let's not take it farther than it is because we love basketball. We love the tournament. We love the championship. It's all been a real important part of all of our lives and we're going to do everything we can to protect it, to promote it and to make sure that it is as good as it can be for future generations. If they at least give us that kind of benefit of the doubt, that's all we can ask for. I'm not asking for people to agree with what we decide, but certainly understand that it comes from the right place and the right mindset, even if they don't think it's the right decision.” (link)

More American Commissioner Tim Pernetti on the JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast. Discussing the league’s re-brand: “It goes all the way back to April of 2024 when I first got the phone call … about the American job. I started to do my research … and I started to dig in and I think I googled AAC one day and everything in Google defaulted to the ACC. I remember making a note, literally writing a note down to talk to the presidents about this, saying this is a problem, right? … There's an identity problem there. … We talked to hundreds of people on campuses, from student athletes to professors to athletic directors and presidents and what I realized was everybody had a different point of view on what the brand stood for. To me it wasn't a brand, it was just a name. [...] I want the American to be known as the most innovative conference in America. … It's a low ego, blue collar, just tough, tough league, and grit just jumped off the page at us. And then service, I think is the last one that’s a hugely important part of any organization. In college sports, you service huge communities of people that literally, sports is such a huge part of their lifestyle that they invest their disposable income in and they look for great experience in. We have to remind ourselves that we also are an organization that's built on service.” (link)

The California State University Board of Trustees will consider approving naming rights for Long Beach State’s sporting and events facility. Currently called the Mike and Arline Walter Pyramid, the 12-year, $8.5M agreement would rename the venue as the “LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.” The Walters, who originally named the Pyramid in 2004, making both a cash donation and a planned gift commitment, have “agreed to step away from the naming in the interest of clearing the way for a significant new investment in the Beach Athletics programs.” (link)

In the second part of a two-part series on this season’s college football coaching carousel, Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken examines why so many big-money hires flame out and if the mountain of buyouts schools have committed to spending this year will prompt a rethink in how schools evaluate coaches and hand out contracts in the player compensation era. An individual with an inside view on multiple searches: “A lot of presidents and ADs would love to say, ‘You know what? We’re going to hire this rising coordinator and pay him $2M because we need to invest in players.’ But they know if it backfires, they’ll lose their career. It would take a lot of courage.” An individual who works with schools on coach evaluations: “This is like what Hollywood’s been dealing with for 1,000 years. Who knows what’s going to make a hit? You really don’t know. The problem is, their jobs are dependent on knowing.” Why are so many bad hires made? A coaching industry veteran remarks: “The process is just so bad. The search firms will get guys on these 30-minute Zooms and the ADs don’t know what questions to ask because they don’t have football expertise and then everyone’s surprised it doesn’t work out. If you don’t know the intricacies of what matters in the game today, and you don’t know what affects winning, how can you know who to hire next?” More. (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown examines James Madison’s upcoming “Marvel Super Hero Day” promotion that, among other activations, is set to include the unveiling of special football helmets featuring Marvel Superheros on one side for its Nov. 22 football match-up against Washington State. JMU Assistant AD for Creative Services and Fan Engagement Melissa Wyant: “Marvel is a huge brand, and one that we’ve seen work with professional sports. We wanted to understand what that might look like at the college level.” Brown: “...it’s one thing to just tell your fans to dress up in superhero costumes. It’s another thing altogether to be the first athletic department to specifically partner with (and license) Marvel. Those conversations, Wyant told me, started with Athlife, the marketing agency Marvel uses for sports activations. Over a series of conversations, JMU was able to figure out what options were potentially available for a collegiate partnership — and what sorts of things would fit at JMU’s price point. The JMU athletics foundation handled the financial component of the deal (and specific terms were not disclosed).” Wyant: “We know that if we can get a 7-year-old here to a game, to our campus … that our chances of getting that person to come back are very good. If we’re able to reach new audiences and tell the story of JMU football, then this would be a huge success. JMU is the sort of place that is ambitious and aggressive, that wants to do more with less. Don’t be afraid to pitch big and bold ideas. You never know what might turn into something.” More. (link)
