Mississippi State President & College Football Playoff Oversight Committee Chair Mark Keenum believes it is unlikely the CFP will expand from 12 to 16 teams next season and says this of the SEC: “I’m not a big fan of automatic qualifiers. I think the best teams ought to play in our nation’s national tournament to determine who our national champion in college football is going to be. And not have automatic bids. And that’s the position of the Southeastern Conference presidents and chancellors, our commissioners and probably most of the conferences that are part of the CFP. We’re still negotiating.” The deadline for the format changes for next year is December 1. (link)

“Any attention is good attention for the American Conference.” That’s American Commissioner Tim Pernetti from the broadcast booth during Thursday night’s UTSA-USF football game, as he notes viewership for the league is up 10% year-over-year with six teams in play for the conference title with the best games ahead. On the value of Thursday and Friday games: “When you can have isolated exposure like you get on a Thursday night or a Friday night, I don’t think you can really buy that. It’s so valuable. Our league has become a fixture on these Thursday nights and Friday nights. […] I think it’s a great opportunity to showcase our conference on a weekly basis because we’ve been the beneficiary of a lot of these midweek games and the viewership has shown that people really are interested in this league.” On the Bulls’ investment, with an on-campus stadium on the way: “I think it says one really loud important thing Tom, which is people that are in our league, schools that are in our league are serious about success. In order to have success, you have to invest and we’re the only league in America that put actually a minimum in for revenue sharing to make sure everybody was sharing at least a minimum level and working up from there.” (link)

Outkick’s Trey Wallace was the first to report Baylor AD & College Football Playoff Chair Mack Rhoades has been the subject of an investigation into “an alleged verbal and physical altercation with a football player and assistant coach.” Wallace continues: “On September 20th … tight end Michael Trigg was preparing to take the field for the opening series against [Arizona State]. As part of the uniform that day, Trigg was wearing a long-sleeved yellow shirt that was being used to protect a brace he was wearing on his shoulder. … Rhoades allegedly went up to Trigg …, and while putting his hands on the player asked him ‘What the fuck are you wearing that yellow shirt for?' … multiple assistants were around when this incident occurred. [...] Immediately following the game … is when the situation took another turn, with an assistant coach being involved. Multiple witnesses tell OutKick that while Trigg went to be with his family, an assistant coach was visiting with his family, when AD Mack Rhoades came up from behind and grabbed the assistant's arm and, subsequently, his shoulder and neck area. According to sources, Rhoades then allegedly proceeded to verbally accost the assistant coach, which was witnessed by multiple Baylor staff members from the athletic department, along with family members.” More. More from Waco, as Baylor has released a statement: “More than a month ago, Baylor University received reports of an incident involving Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades. These reports were thoroughly reviewed and investigated in accordance with University policies, appropriate actions were taken, and the matter is now closed. Mr. Rhoades has expressed regret over his emotions and recognizes his conduct at that moment was not reflective of our Christian mission and values. Mr. Rhoades is an important part of our Baylor Family, and we look forward to his continued leadership of our Athletics Department. We remain committed to ensuring a respectful and accountable environment for all of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff.” The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel and Sam Khan Jr. get this from Michael Trigg Sr., the father of the student-athlete involved, “What bothers me is, Baylor is a Christian school. For someone in the administration to have those choice words for a student-athlete? And that’s the first interaction you’ve ever had with one of your better players? That doesn’t make sense to me.” (link)

New USF CEO for Athletics Rob Higgins inked a five-year deal to lead the Bulls that includes a $500K annual base, plus $350K annually in supplemental compensation, plus a $10K "recruitment bonus.” There’s a slew of incentive opportunities, highlighted by a $500K one-time payment if Higgins is able to navigate the Bulls to Power 4 status. For every $10M increase in department revenues Higgins would receive a $50K bonus. Also, $50K bonuses are lined up for a multi-year APR of 970, a football conference championship & USF being the "Conference Department of the Year” per Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey talks to the Idaho Statesman’s Shaun Goodwin about how he & the Broncos think about football scheduling: “There’s this balance between what the fans want, what we need from a department and a financial standpoint. And how can I, as the leader, understanding I’m going to take bullets, come in and make it make sense. [...] I’m trying to get home and homes in Power Four, but those are easier said than done ... now with Power Four adding more conference games, and they’re dropping teams. [...] I don’t like going far east. It impacts travel, it impacts preparation, it impacts budget and how much it costs us. We go far east, we stay two nights, a lot of times we get a bigger plane because of equipment and things, and so the costs are more.” (link)

Notre Dame football’s 2026 road game at Florida State has been scratched. That game was part of Notre Dame’s commitment to play an average of five ACC teams. The four remaining ACC games are road matchups at North Carolina and Syracuse, and home games against SMU and Miami (FL). BlueGold’s Eric Hansen: “Notre Dame’s 2026 football schedule still lives largely in the hypothetical — with 10 apparent regular-season opponents, lots of TBAs and a few concrete dates leading to some confusing math when it comes to home games.” (link)

In the post-Week 10 edition of the College Football Officials Media Video, National Coordinator of Football Officials and Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw notes that when looking at game time averages for FBS teams: “One thing is worthy of note. Individual teams’ game times vary greatly because of the diversity and styles of play in NCAA Football. That makes our game great, but our overall average game time so far in 2025 is 3:23. That’s up one minute over last year’s average. That’s something we’ll continue to watch.” More. (link)

Per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand and Dan Shanoff, three of Disney’s top executives, co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman along with ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, distributed a memo to employees on Friday outlining the company’s perspective on ESPN’s standoff with YouTube TV over distribution rights, in a signal that the network remains pessimistic about a resolution. From the memo: “Rather than compete on a level playing field, Google’s YouTube TV has approached these negotiations as if it were the only player in the game. It goes without saying that the reason so many consumers value our programming above others is because we invest in the best talent, creators and content in the world, and we cannot allow anyone to undercut our ability to do so. [...] We realize this has been a challenging week, with everyone asking the same question as millions of YouTube TV subscribers during the busiest time of the year in sports: When will ESPN and ABC be back on the service? We wish we could give you that answer today, but unfortunately, we are headed into another sports-packed weekend without a deal in place.” In response, a YouTubeTV spokesperson stated: “Once again, Disney is resorting to their old tactics like leaking documents to the press, negotiating in public through their paid talent and misrepresenting the facts including from the deals they’ve offered and taking credit for our product proposals. Our team stands ready to make a fair agreement in line with their deals with other distributors and we encourage Disney to come to the table and do what’s best for our mutual customers.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports “nearly 60 Division I schools - including 24 in the power leagues - have logged votes in the NCAA’s digital portal to rescind the decision to permit athletes to wager on pro sports. Schools have until Nov. 21 to vote. A two-thirds majority of the 361 active DI schools is needed to rescind.” (link)

The NCAA has warned schools that the ongoing government shutdown may end up disrupting the fall championships with the Association having sent a memo to its member schools this morning saying it is “monitoring the impact and risk” of the ongoing shutdown. The 2025 fall championships require more than 1,000 trips to more than 350 preliminary and final sites, according to the memo. While headquarters did not go into any specifics about how its travel team intends to mitigate travel issues, the organization said it is “exploring” its options “since this is an issue that cannot be controlled by the national office or the membership. Rest assured that the national office staff is committed to working on these potential issues so the student-athletes, coaches and administrators can have great experiences competing for national championships this fall.” (link)

More on this topic - and as you likely know - the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to cut flights at 40 airports around the nation as air traffic controllers miss paychecks. Around 780 flights were canceled today as of this afternoon, equivalent to 3% of all flights, with CNBC’s Leslie Josephs and Laya Neelakandan adding: “According to the FAA’s order, the flight cuts will increase to 10% over the next week, beginning with 4% on Friday, 6% by Tuesday, 8% by Thursday and finally 10% on Nov. 14.” (link)

UMass held a Friday press conference to officially introduce Thorr Bjorn as Senior Deputy AD/Chief Administrative Officer. Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford notes the addition of Bjorn was fully his idea, adding: “You see this a lot at the Power 4 level, you see a lot of ADs hiring other ADs. I just kind of felt like it was the next step we needed to take to ultimately grow not only the football program, but our athletics program and athletics department. … I think in this day and age, I’m being pulled in a lot of different directions. … You see it at the NFL level. You see it at the Power 4 level. I can’t be everywhere I need to be. I need to go fight for this program externally. I need to drive NIL revenue. I need to go engage donors around facility projects. I need to go meet with trustees and the president’s office and the chancellor and advocate for what we’re trying to do. All of those things are hard to do when you also want to be at football practice two hours a day. It’s just not possible and I recognized that. I was spreading myself thin, and candidly, I wasn’t great in any one area and that’s hard to do. I think a lot of times in leadership, you have to figure out how to check your ego and say ‘what’s the best thing for the organization?’ … This was a decision in the best interest of the organization to bring somebody here who can help our football program … drive excellence. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. I’m excited to have that partner in Thorr that I know will lend his expertise. … The way that I view him and the way that we connect will ultimately help carry this program forward.” Much more. The Providence Journal’s Bill Koch examines what Rhode Island’s next AD will be facing moving forward after the recent departure of longtime department stalwart Thorr Bjorn. Koch: “Fundraising has always been critical in the job, but never more so than now. Fans can directly influence the department in ways that have never been legally accessible to them before – donations to the school’s NIL collective, revenue from sporting events and media rights to share. Could URI cut through any existing state red tape and opt to restructure its department on parallel tracks? Finance and everyday operations could operate in separate worlds to service the same end goal. [...] Kingston is in the middle of a football renaissance, and that could have greater influence on a final [AD] decision than when Bjorn was hired away from UMass. Meade Stadium will undergo a $42M renovation that should be completed by the start of the 2027 season. The Rams rarely spend that sort of cash on one specific project – it's a statement of intent to remain at or near the top of the CAA and in the FCS playoff mix for years to come.” URI Football HC Jim Fleming: “There’s an expectation now that wasn’t here when I got here. An expectation of winning, an expectation of continuing to compete for championships – the next person up in his position is going to have to be one who sees that as a mission for the university.” More. The NCAA Committee on Infractions has released three separate infractions decisions after NCAA enforcement investigations uncovered sports-betting violations by six student-athletes who competed in men's basketball at New Orleans, Mississippi Valley and Arizona State. As a result of the violations, the student-athletes all violated ethical conduct rules, triggering permanent ineligibility, and the individuals — Cedquavious Hunter, Dyquavian Short, Jamond Vincent, Donovan Sanders, Alvin Stredic and Chatton "BJ" Freeman — are no longer enrolled at their previous schools. The cases were resolved via negotiated resolution in coordination with the student-athletes' institutions, per infractions process operating procedures. Hunter and Sanders declined to participate in their respective cases. Short, Vincent and Stredic were unresponsive to enforcement staff as their respective cases were processed. Freeman participated in a negotiated resolution and agreed to his violations. The Committee on Infractions does not currently assess penalties for student-athletes who violated NCAA rules but did approve the findings, confirming that the violations occurred. Those found to have violated NCAA rules are ineligible and can only be reinstated with the assistance of an NCAA school. More. (link)

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Mark Stewart provides a construction update on Wisconsin’s $285M Kellner Family Athletic Center practice facility project, noting Phase 1, which includes 120 yards of field, a 305-meter track, office space and under-field parking, is scheduled for completion by July. The second phase will start in April with the demolition of the McClain Center. On that site, a student-athlete support facility including new locker rooms, a weight training facility, a sports medicine center and a dining hall will be built with completion slated for fall 2027. UW AD Chris McIntosh: “It's a huge step forward, not just for our football program, but for our entire athletic department. It's been made possible by a lot of very, very generous people and supporters. It was necessary for us to do that alongside of (and) on a parallel path with everything that's been changing in college athletics and college football, but I don't think that those two things are mutually exclusive. I think they all complement each other. And like I said, when you put the pieces of the puzzle together, I think it causes me to remain optimistic.” (link)

The West Virginia Board of Governors approved plans today for premium seating at Hope Coliseum and granted Mountaineers AD Wren Baker the go-ahead to move forward with the West Tower/Press Box project at Milan Puskar Stadium. On the latter, Baker remarked: “We are approaching that $85-$90M commitment mark. When we get to $100M I think this is a full go.” With today’s approval, an architect can be hired to move the project from conceptual phase to bid phase. Once the next steps are approved, the work could begin following the 2026 football season. (link)

Rice radio voice J.P. Heath provides both model and rendering pics of the Owls’ Gateway Project to renovate Rice Stadium that’s expected to be completed by 2028. Heath adds: “14 suites will be added! And our new broadcast booth will be much lower and closer. The new club level will be where much of the current concourse is on the home side. About 3500-4000 seats will remain on the east side. The Pavilion will be next to the current practice field.” Take a look. (link)

“We have brought ticket prices down. If you look, they’re significantly cheaper (than in 2022) in different areas of the stadium. [...] We’ve heard from our fan base. Lower ticket prices. We’ve lowered ticket prices. Give us more amenities with our season ticket. We’ve done that. We want to see a better product on the field. We’ve delivered that. [...] I think a winning product on the field is the thing that, hopefully, should fuel that and start moving people back.” That’s San Diego State AD John David Wicker in response to questions about football ticket prices and their relation to attendance. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond recently sent a letter to the Aztecs concerning ticket prices, offering to work “to explore creative ways to make SDSU football more accessible for San Diegans — whether through family-friendly ticket packages, local community nights, or discounts through my office that encourage attendance and engagement.” Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney, Desmond wrote to share a “growing concern I’ve heard from residents across San Diego County: the high cost of attending SDSU football games at Snapdragon Stadium. [...] Seeing thousands of empty seats — despite a winning season and strong fan interest — has been disappointing. For many families, the cost of tickets, parking, and concessions can easily reach several hundred dollars, making it difficult to attend even a single game. [...] When something as special as cheering on our hometown team becomes unaffordable, it’s a sign that we’ve drifted away from the community spirit that public institutions like SDSU should represent.” More. HC Fran McCaffery during an online Q&A session last night: “The paid internships … can be a little bit higher. You can pay [the players] whatever you want, but it’s more important and it’s better for me if I can [say], ‘these aren’t no show jobs.’ We never had those. These are show up, learn, and grow [jobs].” (link) ➤ Richmond launches the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete Development Funds, which will be led by Assoc.
