New LSU President Wade Rousse in an interview with the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchison said of Verge Ausberry: “I'll remove the interim (title) and then we'll assess the situation. I can't make a very good decision after being ... on the job for eight hours …I don’t know what permanent means versus removing the interim.” Wednesday afternoon in an interview on WWL radio with Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier, Rousse expanded: “I removed the interim tag (from Ausberry). He’s the acting AD. He has my full authority to go find us a coach for the best job in America.” (link); For what it’s worth, the LSU staff directory still lists Ausberry as Interim AD. (link)

Grand Canyon AD Jamie Boggs chats with Higher Ed Athletics host Travis Smith about the Lopes’ move to the Mountain West: “If you look at who's in the Mountain West, it's national brands, passionate fan bases, it's a high level of competition. Those are all the things that were really important to us. We really appreciated our time and loved our time in the WAC. We were ready to go to that next level and that next level of competition. And so if you look at the Mountain West…almost all of their sports are in the top 15 of all the conferences and really in the top 10, it's a really, really strong conference in multiple sports. So that, on top of the fact that they, again, the passionate fan bases and the brands, we felt like the Mountain West was the right place and we were really thrilled. It's such a collegial, it's a great conference with great leadership. I think about it from an institution based decision. You're not a state public school that is focused on just their region. Obviously, you're going to serve your region, but I mean you really can go into these markets and tell that story of we're a Christian-based university and get their eyes on it. [...] Here in October going into November, we’re ready for basketball season and I'm just kind of thinking, do you think the Havocs are ready for the increased national attention on TV? And do you think the national TV is ready for the Havocs?” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney says college football officiating is a bad system needing change: “It’s impactful. … There’s a system of accountability, but ya’ll don’t know anything about it. It’s behind a curtain. How dare we have accountability? In the meantime we got gambling issues going on and people are being suspended. … Refs are people too. It ain’t just coaches and players, and if they’re a part of the game, then by God, they ought to be part of the game. And they ought to be a part of the accountability and they ought to be a part of the consequences. Not just behind some shadowy curtain. They ought to have to answer for it. Listen, there’s judgment calls and all that, and we’ll just have to disagree to disagree, but there’s also absolute just flat-out misses with no consequences. … I mean these are game-changing calls. Obvious pass interference, not called, that takes you off the field. But, yeah, we just get a ‘this will be addressed with the crew.’ … Ok, but there’s no public accountability. … So that’s the system and the system needs to change. … There needs to be a challenge opportunity, and we need full-time officials. If you’re gonna have this type of stakes, it needs to be full-time officials.” (link)

It’s Personnel…

➤ More moves at LSU as Deputy AD/CRO Clay Harris inked a new deal that could keep him with the Tigers through June of 2028. Harris also got a raise of $75K making his annual pay $325K. Also, Senior Assoc. AD for External/COO Zach Greenwell has been promoted to Deputy AD for External & has a contract that runs through June of 2027. Greenwell’s promotion comes with a $30K salary bump to $285K. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Coaches Corner…

➤ Arkansas Men’s Track & Field HC Chris Buckman plans to retire at the end of 2025 after 18 seasons at the helm and AHC Doug Case will step in to lead the men’s program. (link)

➤ Former LSU Football HC Brian Kelly sent an email to then-Tigers AD Scott Woodward, current-interim AD Verge Ausberry, Exec. Deputy AD/COO Julie Cromer and Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration Austin Thomas following his dismissal. WAFB9 shares the letter: “Scott and team, Sending a quick note to confirm that following my termination during our meeting today, I will return all LSU materials in my possession as required by my contract. Let me know if it’s better for me to clean out my office, or if you would prefer to pack everything up and send it to me. I assume HR will be in touch regarding any other housekeeping matters out there, but let me know if you need anything else from me in the meantime. As we discussed in our meeting, I’m open to your desire to reach a settlement of what’s owed to me under the contract, although of course it would have to make sense financially. Despite your decision to let me go today, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead this program over the last four years and wish you all the best going forward. Best, Brian.” (link)

Legal Matters…

➤ Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich reports that the preliminary injunction hearing in the Patterson v. NCAA class action lawsuit challenging the Redshirt and Four Seasons Rules will be on December 15, 2025, at 9:30 AM CT in Nashville, TN. (link)

➤ Penn State to Ohio State Men’s Basketball transfer student-athlete Puff Johnson alleges the NCAA’s hardship waiver/medical redshirt rule violates federal and Ohio antitrust law. Kennyhertz Perry’s Mit Winter: “The rule requires athletes to (a) suffer a season ending injury during the first half of the season and (b) to have not played in more than 30% of the team’s scheduled games, in order to be able to obtain a waiver for another season of competition. Johnson played in 7 too many games last year and also played in 2 games during the second half of the season. His hardship waiver was denied by the NCAA as a result. He’s seeking an injunction allowing him to play and declaration that the hardship rule is illegal. Another example of how all kinds of NCAA rules are now suspect legally because athletes are paid by schools in connection with playing.” (link)

Legendary college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale was courtside for the season-opening Texas-Duke match-up, marking the start of ESPN’s plan to ease him back into regular action after triumphing in his battle over cancer. Per The Athletic’s Brendan Marks, the plan is “to stagger Vitale’s appearances where they make the most sense” up through January 24th so that he doesn’t overdo things. After that, assuming Vitale’s health permits it, he should be on the sidelines more regularly. ESPN SVP for Production Meg Aronowitz: “Dick is passionate about a game a week, if he can do it. It’s on his terms, where if he’s ready to do a game, he’s gonna do a game. And if he doesn’t feel up to it energy-wise, health-wise, that’s his call — and there’s no explanations needed.” Marks: “To facilitate that, ESPN has made a few subtle logistical changes for Vitale. To preserve his voice, he now typically skips game-day shootarounds. [...] ESPN also keeps Vitale’s longtime producers in a rotation so that some are available wherever he winds up each week. (The network usually suggests three or so games a week it’s interested in him calling, and then Vitale makes his selection.) Likewise, security escorts Vitale more directly to his seat than it used to — although he, of course, still shakes hands and congregates with fans.” Vitale: “I will never, ever stop fighting until I have no choice, but the bottom line is, I’ll keep battling. I will do whatever I can to try and stay around, because I feel there’s a lot of things I want to do — a lot of things I want to achieve.” More. (link)

Massachusetts selects Rhode Island AD Thorr Bjorn as its new Senior Deputy AD/Chief Administrative Officer. Bjorn, a UMass football alum, will serve as the sport administrator for the Minutemen football program and assist with a number of external units. ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news earlier today. (link); Back in Kingston, URI Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Brittney Miles will serve as Interim AD. (link)

Troy officially names Kyle George as the Trojans’ permanent AD. Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr.: “Throughout my tenure as Chancellor, I have been involved in selecting seven of the eleven Athletic Directors in Troy's history, and Kyle stands out as someone who truly embodies the Trojan spirit and understands what it takes to build championship programs. His track record of driving record-breaking revenues, attendance, and brand growth speaks for itself, and I know he will continue to elevate Troy Athletics to new heights while maintaining the integrity and excellence that define our institution.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell has received commitments from House and Senate leaders to hold hearings on the Sports Broadcasting Act. Campbell has reportedly shifted his opinion on federal legislation, “supporting the passage of the SCORE Act, something that could happen as soon as the government returns from what is now a more than 30-day shutdown. When or if the SCORE Act reaches the Senate — where many believe it will die without major changes — Campbell hopes the legislation will be combined with the Democrat-backed SAFE Act, a bill authored by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and one that opens the Sports Broadcasting Act.” (link)

“Why not go all in?” That was the thinking behind Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell hosting an event for TTU’s biggest donors to pitch the idea of using “booster-backed deals in the spring of 2025 to pay athletes just as much as any of the blue-blood powers” before schools moved into a capped rev share system. Oil investor and mega donor Gary Petersen: “We all sat down and said, ‘We want to win really bad.’” Per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, “a few days later, within [AD Kirby] Hocutt’s office, the donors, [Football GM James] Blanchard, [Football HC Joey] McGuire and the athletic director finalized the plans.” Campbell recalled: “Let me go raise this NIL money with the collective here and we can piggyback that on with the revenue sharing. It gives us X amount of money to work with and get a team to compete at a high level.” Dellenger observes: “That ‘X’ is about $49M … Though a portion of that was spent on men’s basketball and other sports, the football roster accounted for the lion’s share. Multiple power conference football and basketball programs orchestrated a similar plan of frontloading booster money this past spring.  [...] But Texas Tech outspent most of them, especially fellow Big 12 member schools, many of which are financially stressed and devoid of a billionaire donor base.” Campbell: “Other schools have spent as much or more than we did, but we aren’t expected to do that?. We’re not supposed to be competitive? We’re supposed to be this middling team?” More. (link)

North Dakota State leads the FCS Playoff Committee’s top 10 listing for the second straight week with Montana State rating second and Montana, Lehigh and Tarleton State rounding out the top 5. This marks the committee’s last ranking release before the FCS Selection Show at noon ET on Nov. 23 (ESPNU). (link)

In part one of a two-part series on this year’s college football coaching carousel, Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken examines “the new dynamics of a world where the fundamental definition of a great coaching job has changed, and why many of the historically prominent schools may not end up with the kind of coach their stakeholders envisioned at the start.” An industry veteran with an inside view to multiple searches: “I think you’re going to see a lot of fan bases at press conferences say, ‘Who?’ I’ve been through this with a lot of schools, and those big jobs are the hardest to fill. A lot of good coaches talk a big game, but they don’t actually want to go into the fire like that. I’m not saying nobody will take the jobs. I’m just saying that even though you have a better chance of winning a national championship at Penn State or LSU on paper than some of these other schools, a lot of people don’t like the pressure of being at a place where they want to fire you for losing two or three games. It’s not a good quality of life.” Wolken: “When coaching agents like Jimmy Sexton first started to control the market, there were two primary factors driving movement: Life-changing money and access to talent, which ultimately translated to more wins and championships. [ …] Now, many of those factors are a bit more in equilibrium.” Another industry insider: “The money’s stupid, and we’ve got more parity than ever. A lot of coaches are looking at it thinking, ‘I can get to the playoffs from where I’m at, so why go to the pressure cooker of an Auburn? I can get eight-to-10 years out of a good job and be pretty happy or I can go to Florida and be fired in 3½ years.’” More. (link)

The Athletic's Chris Vannini takes a look at some unique contract quirks found in Indiana Football HC Curt Cignetti and Kent State Football HC Mark Carney’s deals. Per Vannini, if Cignetti “makes a College Football Playoff semifinal at any point at Indiana, the school agrees to a ‘good faith’ market review and adjustment of Cignetti’s contract. If it doesn’t make him a top-three highest-paid coach in the sport within 120 days of playing in a semifinal, the buyout for Cignetti to leave would drop to zero (it starts at $15M through next November). That’s the kind of incentive-based clause that schools would be smart to lean into: Pay someone more for winning. It’s also something that could quickly pay off for Cignetti, whose new $11.6M average salary is currently near the top three in the nation. [...] It’s possible by December that Cignetti might only need one postseason win to activate the clause and another renegotiation.” At Kent State, Carney’s deal “has a clause that he cannot recruit active Kent State players or recruits to another school if he takes another job or is fired. [...] Given how common it has become for coaches to bring players with them to new jobs, we haven’t seen this clause pop up in other coach contracts. Schools may not see it as actually enforceable.” More. (link)

Montana State has announced revisions to its initial Facilities Master Plan, a 20-year blueprint first introduced in 2017, laying out a retooled vision that includes: upgrades to Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and the attached Shroyer Gym, such as enhanced locker rooms and training areas, and the potential for premium suites inside Worthington Arena; expanding the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center with additional courts, spectator areas, locker rooms and team areas, and possibly an expansion to further support the golf and ski teams; potential development of the Dyche Fields to include outdoor tennis areas and a new athletic administration/performance building; additions to the Bobcat Track & Field Complex for operations and training areas; and continued renovations to Bobcat Stadium — increased/improved seating and amenities to "elevate fan experience and the overall functionality" of the facility. AD Leon Costello: “I think that's the beauty of a master plan. You might look at the stadium and say that becomes No. 1 because of the financial impact it can have on our entire department, but really the priority falls back on our donors, and it's really what they want to support, and I think that's why you lay it out. The way we did it is, here are the five, six or seven things that we feel are a priority to us. Now we have to find the donors and the financial backing in order to complete them.” More including renderings. (link)

Legal Matters…
➤ Liberty walk-on track & field student-athlete Gracelyn Laudermilch will virtually return to the courtroom to again object to the fairness of the House Settlement. From Laudermilch’s Sept. 12 letter to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken: “I am extremely concerned that there are major contradictions that exist in the space between the court-mandated policies and how these things are being carried out in the actual lives of student athletes across the nation.” Per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, “Laudermilch explained that Liberty’s women’s track and cross-country program was told on July 30 that, in order for the school to comply with Title IX, its roster would have to shrink from 24 to 17 runners. This was meted out through a racing time trial two weeks into practice.” Laudermilch continues: “Nothing really prepares you for watching your teammates, who love each other, compete for spots on a team because of roster limits. … How is it rationalized that this settlement is fair, just and beneficial to the members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement class? [...] Optional participation, negotiated by biased Class Counsel, and instituted by the universities in ‘grandfathering them in’ and overlooking the need for Title IX compliance was a lack of foresight and an ‘abuse of discretion’ by the Court. Because of this unjust settlement, current, absent, future, and unrepresented members of the Injunctive Relief Class have been and are being harmed.” More. (link)
➤ Idaho State Men’s Basketball student-athlete Caleb Van De Griend has been granted an ex parte temporary restraining order to compete this season by the District Court of Bannock County, Idaho. Heitner Legal’s namesake Darren Heitner: “He graduated [high school] in Dec. 2020 but was stuck in Australia due to strict COVID borders until Apr 2022 (unvaccinated for religious reasons). Played local league unpaid to maintain skills. Excelled at Minot State (DII), transferred to Idaho State. NCAA denied waiver; court granted TRO!” More. (link)
