NCAA President Charlie Baker has sent a letter imploring Congress to grant the Association protections around eligibility standards for college athletes. From Baker’s letter: “I write to bring your attention to the ongoing attack on the essential eligibility and academic rules that are the foundation of college sports. This year alone, we have seen dozens of challenges to these rules, jeopardizing college sports as we know them. The NCAA’s eligibility and academic rules are what ensure that college sports are played by college student-athletes, and that a strong connection remains between college athletics and academics. [...] The courts’ chiseling away of the NCAA’s ability to enforce eligibility rules is destabilizing and threatening college sports. [...] Congress must take action, and legislation must include limited antitrust protection to allow the NCAA to promulgate fair, sensible eligibility and academic rules.” Full letter. (link)

LSU clarifies it’s moving forward with Verge Ausberry as permanent AD with a source in the president’s office telling LouisianaSports.net’s Matt Moscona: “Verge Ausberry is THE athletic director at LSU. Period. There is no intent or desire to play word games with this issue. Athletics needs a stable hand at the helm, and that is Verge Ausberry. Verge is fully empowered to find our next football coach and to run the athletic department.” The source also added “there are no plans to conduct a search for a new athletic director once the football coach is hired.” (link)

UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone secures a contract extension that could keep her leading the Bulldogs through May 2027. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti joins JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast to share his thoughts on private equity coming into college sports. “It's definitely coming. I've never been more convinced. … It's definitely going to happen, without a doubt, whether it happens at a conference level or maybe more likely at an individual institution, it's happening. … I don't know if it's been a holdup. What I would tell you is college presidents and athletic directors are being really smart in that they're getting educated, right? … When I started, I got very loud about private capital as an opportunity, but we spent a year educating people. … I brought other groups in. We spent the year meeting with people, vetting opportunities, sketching out sort of like ‘what could the structure look like.’ But most of all, getting educated. … College is just a different animal and everybody's saying private equity, equity. What our ADs and presidents know from me, bringing people in to educate them, is there's a hundred ways to finance these deals and structure them and do them. From our standpoint, I‘d love to be first, but we’ve got to get it right and to get it right, this is as much about finding the right partner as it is the capital. Capital is a commodity right now. It's out there. It can be had, if you want it, you can get it. I've told our presidents you could borrow against your endowments at 3% if you want it right now. But to grow the commercial enterprise, you need to be in business with someone that has the capital and also has resources, if not owns a company in the commercial space, that can help you come in and supercharge what you do. The capital's great, but we need the expertise. … The capital's out there, but finding the right partner, you really have to work hard to thread that needle.” More. (link)

The News & Observer’s Jaydn Watson-Fisher and Shelby Swanson discern where North Carolina, Duke and NC State stack up under the ACC’s new viewership incentive model. Per the authors, “North Carolina has already surpassed its performance last season. But since blowout losses have mounted and interest has waned, UNC’s early-season hype has largely failed to translate into sustained viewership. In a conference where viewership now directly affects revenue, that’s a bigger problem. [...] ESPN was primed to broadcast ‘eight, if not 10’ of North Carolina’s games this fall. But UNC’s 2-3 start — which saw North Carolina get outscored 120-33 by its P4 opponents — cooled ESPN’s appetite for [Football HC Bill] Belichick’s squad.” Overall, Duke ranks second in the Triangle and No. 10 overall in the ACC with its most-viewed game having taken place “in the nonconference slate when the Blue Devils hosted Illinois on Sept. 6, averaging 2.18M viewers. The team’s second-most watched game came against Georgia Tech on Oct. 18, with 1.7M viewers. [...] NC State is last in the state and second-worst in the ACC with 3.7M viewers this season. Its best game came in Week 3 when it received 1.2M viewers for its 34-24 win at Wake Forest to open the ACC slate. The Wolfpack ranks 15th out of all ACC teams after playing four games on non-rated channels ACC Network, ESPN+ and Peacock.” More. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides the latest figures from NIL Go, noting there have been 12,175 deals cleared at a value of $87.5M with 394 not cleared (value $10.01M) and none currently in arbitration. In all, “74% of deals reaching resolution cleared in seven days,” while “deals resolved in October cleared 21% faster than September.” Dellenger also adds the “CSC [is] not releasing deals actively under review.” The NIL Go platform currently services 33,247 student-athlete, 1,251 institution and 3,819 representative users. Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger examines the “most expensive coaching carousel in college football history,” noting industry leaders highlight four reasons for such an active cycle, “Money: There is an increased financial impact of losing on programs that, more than ever, find themselves in a stressful monetary situation with the onset of athlete revenue-sharing. [...] Playoffs: There is a shift in expectations of the definition of a ‘good season,’ from eight or nine wins and a trip to a warm and sunny New Year’s Day Bowl, to a playoff-or-bust mentality where elimination from the postseason tournament (three losses) is a fireable offense. [...] Last year: A slow cycle in 2024 (just five power conference jobs turned over) has impacted the rate of firings this year. [...] Age of Outrage: New generations of fans, reared on social media and instant results, are slim on patience and are filling home stadiums with chants to fire some of the most successful coaches in modern college football history.” Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin: “Think about it, we talk about the players now are like NFL players with how they are paid. Now I feel like the college coaches are more like NFL coaches where the firings happen quicker. You see it all the time, NFL coaches are one or two years. It’s a product of things that happen.” More. Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Football HC Luke Fickell will remain in his role in 2026. McIntosh: “Chancellor (Jennifer) Mnookin and I are aligned on significantly elevating investment in our program to compete at the highest level. We are willing to make an investment in infrastructure and staff. As important, is our ability to retain and recruit players in a revenue share and NIL era. […] Our intention is to be, in terms of our investment, on par with those that we intend to compete with. Our expectations are to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten and beyond.” (link)

Former Northwestern Football HC Pat Fitzgerald says he feels “100% vindicated” in the wake of the August settlement from his $130M wrongful termination suit against the school. “I feel very fortunate. I feel fully vindicated. It's been great working through this process. There's been conversations with a lot of folks. It's been face-to-face, it's been on Zoom, it's been phone calls. [My candidacy has] been received very well.” (link)

New LSU President Wade Rousse in an interview with the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchison said of Verge Ausberry: “I'll remove the interim (title) and then we'll assess the situation. I can't make a very good decision after being ... on the job for eight hours …I don’t know what permanent means versus removing the interim.” Wednesday afternoon in an interview on WWL radio with Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier, Rousse expanded: “I removed the interim tag (from Ausberry). He’s the acting AD. He has my full authority to go find us a coach for the best job in America.” (link); For what it’s worth, the LSU staff directory still lists Ausberry as Interim AD. (link)

Grand Canyon AD Jamie Boggs chats with Higher Ed Athletics host Travis Smith about the Lopes’ move to the Mountain West: “If you look at who's in the Mountain West, it's national brands, passionate fan bases, it's a high level of competition. Those are all the things that were really important to us. We really appreciated our time and loved our time in the WAC. We were ready to go to that next level and that next level of competition. And so if you look at the Mountain West…almost all of their sports are in the top 15 of all the conferences and really in the top 10, it's a really, really strong conference in multiple sports. So that, on top of the fact that they, again, the passionate fan bases and the brands, we felt like the Mountain West was the right place and we were really thrilled. It's such a collegial, it's a great conference with great leadership. I think about it from an institution based decision. You're not a state public school that is focused on just their region. Obviously, you're going to serve your region, but I mean you really can go into these markets and tell that story of we're a Christian-based university and get their eyes on it. [...] Here in October going into November, we’re ready for basketball season and I'm just kind of thinking, do you think the Havocs are ready for the increased national attention on TV? And do you think the national TV is ready for the Havocs?” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney says college football officiating is a bad system needing change: “It’s impactful. … There’s a system of accountability, but ya’ll don’t know anything about it. It’s behind a curtain. How dare we have accountability? In the meantime we got gambling issues going on and people are being suspended. … Refs are people too. It ain’t just coaches and players, and if they’re a part of the game, then by God, they ought to be part of the game. And they ought to be a part of the accountability and they ought to be a part of the consequences. Not just behind some shadowy curtain. They ought to have to answer for it. Listen, there’s judgment calls and all that, and we’ll just have to disagree to disagree, but there’s also absolute just flat-out misses with no consequences. … I mean these are game-changing calls. Obvious pass interference, not called, that takes you off the field. But, yeah, we just get a ‘this will be addressed with the crew.’ … Ok, but there’s no public accountability. … So that’s the system and the system needs to change. … There needs to be a challenge opportunity, and we need full-time officials. If you’re gonna have this type of stakes, it needs to be full-time officials.” (link)

➤ Former LSU Football HC Brian Kelly sent an email to then-Tigers AD Scott Woodward, current-interim AD Verge Ausberry, Exec. Deputy AD/COO Julie Cromer and Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration Austin Thomas following his dismissal. Let me know if it’s better for me to clean out my office, or if you would prefer to pack everything up and send it to me. I assume HR will be in touch regarding any other housekeeping matters out there, but let me know if you need anything else from me in the meantime. As we discussed in our meeting, I’m open to your desire to reach a settlement of what’s owed to me under the contract, although of course it would have to make sense financially. Despite your decision to let me go today, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead this program over the last four years and wish you all the best going forward. Best, Brian.” (link)

Legal Matters…
➤ Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich reports that the preliminary injunction hearing in the Patterson v. NCAA class action lawsuit challenging the Redshirt and Four Seasons Rules will be on December 15, 2025, at 9:30 AM CT in Nashville, TN. (link)
➤ Penn State to Ohio State Men’s Basketball transfer student-athlete Puff Johnson alleges the NCAA’s hardship waiver/medical redshirt rule violates federal and Ohio antitrust law. Kennyhertz Perry’s Mit Winter: “The rule requires athletes to (a) suffer a season ending injury during the first half of the season and (b) to have not played in more than 30% of the team’s scheduled games, in order to be able to obtain a waiver for another season of competition. Johnson played in 7 too many games last year and also played in 2 games during the second half of the season. His hardship waiver was denied by the NCAA as a result. He’s seeking an injunction allowing him to play and declaration that the hardship rule is illegal. Another example of how all kinds of NCAA rules are now suspect legally because athletes are paid by schools in connection with playing.” (link)

Legendary college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale was courtside for the season-opening Texas-Duke match-up, marking the start of ESPN’s plan to ease him back into regular action after triumphing in his battle over cancer. Per The Athletic’s Brendan Marks, the plan is “to stagger Vitale’s appearances where they make the most sense” up through January 24th so that he doesn’t overdo things. After that, assuming Vitale’s health permits it, he should be on the sidelines more regularly. ESPN SVP for Production Meg Aronowitz: “Dick is passionate about a game a week, if he can do it. It’s on his terms, where if he’s ready to do a game, he’s gonna do a game. And if he doesn’t feel up to it energy-wise, health-wise, that’s his call — and there’s no explanations needed.” Marks: “To facilitate that, ESPN has made a few subtle logistical changes for Vitale. To preserve his voice, he now typically skips game-day shootarounds. [...] ESPN also keeps Vitale’s longtime producers in a rotation so that some are available wherever he winds up each week. (The network usually suggests three or so games a week it’s interested in him calling, and then Vitale makes his selection.) Likewise, security escorts Vitale more directly to his seat than it used to — although he, of course, still shakes hands and congregates with fans.” Vitale: “I will never, ever stop fighting until I have no choice, but the bottom line is, I’ll keep battling. I will do whatever I can to try and stay around, because I feel there’s a lot of things I want to do — a lot of things I want to achieve.” More. (link)
