Wake Forest AD Currie joined the Paul Finebaum Show late last week to discuss the state of the ACC and the overall landscape of college sports, saying of the latter: “This is the most dynamic set of convergent factors and divergent factors really that have ever descended upon an enterprise. … It’s never been perfect. There’s always been some particular challenge, but this moment in time seems the most challenging of all. I’m really encouraged by (NCAA) President Baker’s leadership, his transparency, his empathy and his effort in trying to come up with pragmatic solutions.” Currie believes the ACC is in a “strong place” and tells Finebaum that during his 30 years in college athletics and 15 in different high-level meetings at various leagues, there “always seems to be some kind of drama inside that room. Certainly, when I first went to K-State in 2009, 2010, I went through that with different alignment anxieties. … I think the most positive thing about our meetings a couple weeks ago, and Commissioner Phillips articulated this coming out, was we really had strong, honest, candid conversations in that room about how we can continue to figure out how to make our league stronger.” (link)

Nebraska AD Alberts acknowledges the newly expanded Big Ten may result in a lighter non-conference football lift: “The reality is, you play in the Big Ten Conference and you add USC and UCLA, there is nobody’s schedules that you look at and go, ‘Wow, this is easy.’ Now, I will say you have to have some common sense. If we’re going to play this kind of conference schedule, you have to have some rules about non-conference. There’s some long contracts that we have inherited. Part of the problem is knowing what the College Football Playoff is going to look like. What’s going to be emphasized? … There’s a group of Big Ten folks studying it, and the playoff, and what kind of schedule makes sense.” On the Huskers’ feelings about playing night games in November, Alberts explains: “We want to play on prime time. We’ve got to do it. If it’s cold at 7 p.m., guess what? It’s cold at 3 p.m. The problem is, when we get there, we have to win.” (link)

West Virginia AD Baker intimates the Mountaineers may adjust their football scheduling philosophy away from playing two Power 5 teams in the nonconference. “Almost every program that has ascended from whether it's back of the pack or middle of the pack to the upper echelon has done so with being very careful with picking and choosing the games they schedule. … When you're in a league as good as the Big 12 from top to bottom and you have nine conference games, I think that you have to have a Group of Five opponent in those three non-conference opportunities. So, I would probably do Power Five, a Group of Five, and/or another Group of Five or FCS. … I think moving forward, we're going to always look at probably a model that allows us to have a really good chance to come out of non-conference at a minimum of 2-1 and maybe even 3-0." USF AD Kelly sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown to share his strategies for achieving buy-in from both athletics staff and campus decision-makers, how his career experience in event management has led to a detail-oriented leadership style and the influence of Maya Angelou and soul artist Sade on the development of his leadership philosophy. According to Kelly, Angelou’s quote “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” is more than a mantra – it’s a key business and leadership principle. Kelly says that approach has helped him step back and view the business from multiple perspectives, including those of the student-athletes, coaches and fans. “That multi-tiered and multilayered…approach is something that I think is valuable and has helped and will continue to help me as I progress.” Full interview. Freshly minted Hawaii AD Angelos says he’d like to expand the university’s popularity in the Pacific Rim, especially in Japan, telling the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Tsai: “That’s a big market for us. … We’d like to expand our reach. You see that with pro sports. You see that with other conferences. But, heck, nobody can do it better than we can, most likely because we’re 2,500 miles away from the continent and a lot closer to Japan and the Pacific Rim than anybody else. My hope is we can become that Pacific Rim’s team. Market ourselves as that, go over and play over there on a regular basis, sell our merchandise over there. Heck, Hawaii has a huge brand, a huge name all over the world.” (link)

Per Sportico, the full 14-game WCWS slate averaged a hair under of 1.1M viewers across ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, which is 4% better than last year’s 16-game tournament but still shy of the 2021 high water mark. The title-deciding contest between Oklahoma and Florida State drew nearly 1.9M viewers on ESPN, up 7% YOY. Sportico notes: “The modest spike comes as TV usage is down 11% year-over-year.” (link)

Memphis Men’s Basketball HC Hardaway this weekend opened his home to more than 100 guests as part of a fundraiser hosted by the Memphis Rebounders donor group. To attend the event, a “minimum donation of $1K to the booster club was suggested,” according to the Daily Memphian’s Upadhyaya. Rebounders President White: “We really wanted to open up this experience to (donors), but also to reintroduce them to some NIL opportunities and really give them an opportunity to spend some time with Coach and ask those questions themselves and have those conversations with one another in a more open, free environment. The whole goal is to really to kinda get everybody back on board.” Upadhyaya adds that many around the program have been open about the Tigers’ inability to keep up in the NIL realm, and Hardaway says: “Some of this stuff is kinda getting out of hand. But it is where we are right now. We have to deal with it, and we have to move forward.” (link)

San Diego State football-focused Aztec Link Executive Director Tolver tells the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kenney that the collective is setting reasonable goals: “Our base is not going to be 10 or 15 multimillionaires that all decide they’re going to cut a check for $250K and figure out how to use it. It’s just not San Diego State’s culture. At least not at this point.” Tolver estimates players could make $10K to $30K a year, depending on their level of involvement. “That’s probably going to be 10 or 15 engagements over a 12-month period. Our mission is to give the San Diego State coaching staff the confidence to say, ‘Hey, listen, if you come here, you could have NIL opportunities.’” The collective has roughly a dozen people on its advisory board, more than half of whom are former players, and Tolver says: “I tell them two things — I want their phone book and their wallet. I want them to participate financially, but I also want them to help spread the word. Leveraging football players to pull the rest of the community in.” (link)

Texas Governor Abbott has signed the state’s new NIL law, with On3’s Crabtree noting: “...the most notable change appears to provide cover for state schools from being punished by the NCAA for any NIL-related violations, including any committed by collectives that have been set up to support student-athletes through deal facilitation.” More key details: “Additionally, the legislation allows a college to establish agreements with a third-party entity to facilitate NIL activities on its behalf. [...] Texas A&M and Arkansas are believed to be the first schools whose booster organization also is directly fundraising for NIL opportunities for student-athletes. Other schools in the SEC footprint, especially in Missouri and Oklahoma, are also aggressively pursuing similar organizations.” The new law goes into effect on July 1. (link)

CollegeAD vs. the Big 12 continues as the Daily Memphian’s Buckley tweets: “A representative of the website that reported the visit said this Friday night: ‘College AD stands by its reporting that a contingent of Big 12 officials visited Memphis, where they were able to see plans of the Liberty Bowl expansion.’ (link); Daily Memphian columnist Calkins adds: “Regarding the current tizzy over the Big 12 visit to Memphis: It wasn’t our story, but we’re not going to refute the original story because, well, Brett [Yormark] was here. The San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner attempts to parse recent comments by Pac-12 CEOs to determine the status & potential outcome of the league’s media rights negotiations: “...if we combine (Arizona President) Robbins’ outlook for the Pac-12’s future with (Washington State President) Schulz’s revenue projections and the verbal agreement on the grant-of-rights contract, it’s reasonable to conclude that the process is nearing an end. That Kliavkoff has seen the numbers. That he has given the presidents enough details to give them confidence in the financials. And that the central decision-makers in this saga expect to stay together and agree to a media deal that will last the rest of the decade. [...] Any outcome is possible; no scenario should be dismissed. But the latest clues suggest a quiet optimism and approaching resolution.” (link)

+ Cunningham on the potential for federal intervention on NIL: “I don’t know the answer to that. I’ve heard people say that our Congress is more interested now than they’ve ever been. I’ve heard others say, ‘No way. They’re not going to do that.’ So, I’m not sure which one’s right. And I’m not a DC expert.”
+ King on the value of athletics in Durham: “...what we add to the brand, I think, can’t be overstated. What’s interesting is we just had a trustee meeting and I presented and afterwards, they’re all buzzing about athletics, and they all want to talk about athletics, the good and the bad, and just, you know, peek behind the curtain and understand what’s going on, how we’re doing things at Duke. And then we talked about the hospital, but then they want to come back to athletics.“
+ Corrigan on the potential for a new NCAA organizational & leadership structure: “I think it’s a worthy exploration. And (having) a commissioner of football, a commissioner of basketball, commissioner of women’s basketball. ... It is really different. It’s a different way of looking at it. But my thought process at this point is that everything has changed so much. Why not continue to think differently? Because the traditional model is not what it was, I don’t know, five years ago. Much less 20 years. So why do we need to think about everything on the same plane that we always have, because that’s the way we always have. So I think (separating football) is worthy of exploration.” More. (link)

Ohio State will not play night football games at home after the first weekend in November past the 2023 season, according to Buckeyes AD Smith, who explains: “We might do it away. If a colleague calls from another school and said, 'Hey, would you be willing to play a night game at our place?' We have to make that call. Both athletic directors have to agree on that. And so usually I would talk to Ryan (Day) and see if we're interested in doing that and we will say yes or no. But it depends on who it is, where it is or what time our team might get back. That always plays a role into their plan. If there's a second Saturday in November and we're somewhere and our team doesn't get back until 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning, that might be a problem.” Beyond weather concerns, Smith explains late games cause concerns for season ticket holders who come in front out of town. “For them to have to make a decision to come to a night game the Saturday before Thanksgiving, I just would prefer to take that burden off of them.” (link)

Nebraska AD Alberts talks about the process of selecting protected rivalries for the conference football schedule. First, the league asked each team what rivalry it would protect if it could protect one. The league then asked the same question for two games and three games. Alberts says he and Iowa AD Barta agreed that their rivalry needed to continue, making the Hawkeyes Iowa’s first choice. NU’s second and third choices were Wisconsin and Minnesota, respectively, and Alberts notes: “But then all of a sudden a little gamesmanship started happening. You can imagine (ADs saying), ‘Well, hey, if we can submit protected games, then maybe we should just select three teams that have been the least successful over the last 5-10 years in the Big Ten and protect them.’ Obviously, that wasn’t going to work. So, ultimately, as all of these other teams submitted who their protected rivals were, sometimes you submitted a protected rival and that school doesn’t submit you as a protected rival. So there’s nuance there." (link)

UCF AD Mohajir on his support for Men’s Basketball HC Dawkins as the Knights enter the Big 12: “I just believed wholeheartedly that we needed to do everything we possibly could to help him with resources to infuse into this program, to help with personnel and that’s what we’re doing. He’s got some help with NIL this year and we’ve got a lot of plans for him and his facilities. [...] Everybody thinks it’s really easy to make a change. There are a lot of people’s lives that are involved and you have to ask yourself as an AD and administrator that we’re doing everything to help that coach. If you’ve done everything to help that coach and they’re still unsuccessful, then you can feel, ‘OK this is the right time [to make a change].’ We’re going into the best basketball conference in the country.” (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution investigates the recent history of off-the-field incidents involving Georgia football student-athletes. On how discipline is handed down, the AJC submits, in part: “Since Kirby Smart became Georgia’s head coach in late 2015, dozens of players have engaged in reckless, often lawless behavior that put them and others in jeopardy: excessive speeding, street racing and driving under the influence, among other offenses. … But Smart almost always lets athletes continue playing despite their off-field transgressions. Suspensions are unusual, dismissals from the team even rarer. Exactly how Smart punishes players is unclear. In one instance, in 2019, he ordered six players who had been arrested over the previous six weeks to run the steps of Sanford Stadium in front of a select audience of donors to Georgia’s athletics department. Otherwise, he routinely declines to disclose disciplinary actions after players break team rules or the law.” Lots here. (link)

+ Wichita State will pay new Baseball HC Green $2.2M in base salary over the life of his five-year deal, which runs through the 2028 season. That works out to an average annual salary of $437K, which is a slight uptick from what his predecessor, Wedge, pulled in ($410K). (link)
+ Montana State Football HC Vigen gets a raise to $214K in base salary, up from his $210K annual salary in his prior deal. DC Garza and OC Housewright, both of whom signed contracts in April that could keep them in Bozeman through March of 2024, will make $107K and $125K, respectively. Both Housewright and Garza have been cited for DUIs in the past eight months though their LOAs do not mention DUI or other specific violations of the law. More on the legal jargon. (link)
+ Wisconsin announces contract extensions for seven coaches: Men’s Tennis boss Westerman, Men’s Golf HC Wilson, Cross Country/T&F Director Byrne, Softball HC Healy and Women’s Golf HC Oehrlein all get another five years (extensions through May 31, 2028), while Men’s Rowing HC Clark and Women’s Tennis HC McKenna get an additional three years each (extensions through May 31, 2026).
