Baylor AD Mack Rhoades is taking a leave of absence, effective yesterday, with Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reporting “new allegations surfacing this week regarding Baylor AD Mack Rhoades are related to a violation of the faith-based university’s policies and practices. Baylor is declining comment as this involves a ‘personnel matter and an on-going investigation.’" Bears Deputy AD/COO Jovan Overshown and Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Administration/CFO Cody Hall are being appointed as Co-ADs. (link, link, link); As a result, Rhoades has stepped down from his role with the College Football Playoff both as chair and on the selection committee. The CFP Management Committee has moved quickly to name Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek as selection committee chair and added Utah AD Mark Harlan as the Big 12’s representative. (link)

Colorado AD Rick George will step down at the end of the academic year and step into a new role as Special Advisor to the Chancellor/AD Emeritus. Chancellor Justin Schwartz: “Rick's contributions to our university in his 13 years as head of our athletic department have been incalculable. He is a nationally respected leader who has always kept CU at the forefront of the dynamic and highly competitive landscape of college athletics. I am grateful for his leadership and am elated he has decided to stay on as a Special Advisor and AD Emeritus.” (link)

The NCAA Board of Directors sent a memo to member schools Thursday regarding eligibility standards. From the memo: “While the rules provide opportunities for institutions to seek limited waivers of these [eligibility] rules in extraordinary circumstances, these waiver requests need to be filed in good faith for the system to work as intended. The eligibility rules are applied fairly and consistently, a commitment that must continue. … The trend of more than 70 student-athletes rushing to the courthouse to seek injunctive relief against eligibility rules is troubling as it concerns stability and predictability for member institutions and future student-athletes. … Coaches and other athletics department officials who encourage these lawsuits, and even support them on the premise that it is to benefit only one student-athlete, are undermining the very rules their schools have voted to approve and abide by, and are depriving future student-athletes of meaningful opportunities to compete. The Division I Board will explore fair ways to hold accountable institutions electing to not follow the rules that they have supported.” More. (link)

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken has overruled objections from 2025-26 House settlement class members to the settlement’s injunctive relief portion. Wilken writes the objections, which largely centered around Title IX, were already addressed and left open the door for future Title IX litigation on revenue sharing. Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “Wilken wrote she can't edit a settlement—it's a contract between parties—and to the extent Title IX claims are pursued, they should be brought against individual schools, including those that share most of the revenue with male athletes. I expect we'll see many Title IX lawsuits on that front. Keep in mind, this ruling is only at the district court (trial) level. Over the next year or so, the Ninth Circuit will review these and other arguments as the settlement is challenged at the appellate level.” Full opinion text. (link, link)

Michigan’s criticism of the Big Ten’s potential multi-billion-dollar investment deal, which those representing the school’s interests say would grant an investor status similar to a member institution while mortgaging future revenues for a short-term payout, have some at UM questioning the future of the school’s 129-year relationship with the league, per The Athletic’s Ralph Russo, Austin Meek and Stewart Mandel. Michigan Board of Regents Chair Mark Bernstein: “There is a very real financial problem that many athletic departments face. We acknowledge that and are eager to address that in a collective way through the conference. At the same time, it is astonishing to us and irresponsible to not consider many other alternatives that are not as burdensome or expensive as the one that has been proposed involving private capital.” Bernstein concludes: “The University of Michigan is not desperate.” More. Why would a major brand like Ohio State and other league schools support the Big Ten’s potential private capital investment? Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes the answer starts with the deal’s introduction of “a new, uneven distribution structure in which the Buckeyes — maybe more than any of their conference foes — stand to benefit dramatically. [...] For the most prominent brands, they’ll reap the benefits of an uneven distribution structure. Along with Penn State and Michigan (if the Wolverines agree to the deal), Ohio State will earn an immediate infusion of $190M, compared to around $145M for the next group, Oregon and USC (if it agrees), and $100-110M for the other 13 schools. The upfront money isn’t the only bucket distributed unevenly. Future revenue distribution from the conference is staggered: Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State at 5.5% of league revenues; Oregon and USC at 5%; and all others at 4.9%. UC Investments collects 10%. In addition, there’s a $50M bonus for a select group of schools once a new television deal is struck, starting in 2037. And there are millions available in a brand and success bucket available to all programs, but likely awarded more regularly to bluebloods like Ohio State. But why would everyone else support this deal? It’s quite simple: stability. [...] The 20-year bond provides security for middling or lower-tier programs at a time when college sports’ biggest brands are being lured toward a more consolidated or independent structure (think super league).” More. The Pac-12 and Versant’s USA Sports have agreed to a five-year rights deal slated to begin next fall and run through the 2031-32 school year, per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who notes the arrangement will see 22 college football games, over 50 men’s hoops match-ups and five to 10 women’s hoops contests broadcast on USA Network starting next season. Also as a result of the deal, the reconstituted Pac-12 football membership will now have 100% of its intra-conference games on linear TV next fall after previously striking deals with CBS and The CW. Octagon assisted the league in its negotiations. (link)

The Citadel announces its intention to opt-in to the House settlement for 2026-27. Bulldogs AD Art Chase: “This decision signals the strong alignment among The Citadel's stakeholders required to navigate the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Opting in emphasizes the institution's commitment to compete at the NCAA Division I level as a proud member of the Southern Conference.” (link)

Hawaii AD Matt Elliott, Football HC Timmy Chang and Women’s Basketball HC Laura Beeman recently met with state lawmakers for an informational briefing on player compensation and NIL deals where the trio informed the Senate and House higher education committees that for UH to remain competitive and have a long-term college sports future, it needs to embrace player compensation. Per Hawaii News Now, Elliott observed the department is doing what it can through fundraising and corporate partnerships, but wants the state to approve an annual $5M NIL fund.” Elliott: “If we are just chasing dollars, constantly chasing dollars to be able to retain our students, that’ll put us at a disadvantage, but with that kind of funding as a foundation, we believe we can be extremely competitive.” Beeman: “We are on the right path to continuing to grow young people in the right direction, and we can pay them. We have to pay them. If we don’t, we will lose them and our rosters will not look the same four years from now.” The expectation is for the athletics department to submit a formal proposal when the next session starts in January 2026. Washington State has parted ways with AD Anne McCoy. WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell in a statement: “Anne has provided steady leadership through one of the most complex and pivotal periods in the history of Cougar Athletics. She built a strong foundation for the program’s future grounded in integrity, academic success, and care for our student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for Anne’s decades of service and her unwavering commitment to Washington State University.” (link)

Sources tell JohnCanzano.com’s namesake there was a “total clash of styles” between McCoy and Cantwell. Canzano gets this from an unnamed source: “Everyone loves Anne. She’s smart, loyal, and great, but Cantwell wants a cold-blooded killer in that AD chair.” Also from Canzano: “The new-world Pac-12 recently distributed non-disclosure agreements to the campus ADs, I learned. That raised eyebrows. Some of the ADs signed the NDAs. Some of them did not and are seeking legal guidance. The campus presidents and the league office are apparently concerned about leaks on the media-rights and expansion front, among other things.” (link)

CougFan’s Jamey Vinnick identifies several potential candidates to succeed McCoy in Pullman, including Toledo AD Bryan Blair, Purdue Deputy AD/COO Ken Halpin, UTSA AD Lisa Campos, Western Michigan AD Dan Bartholomae, Maryland Senior Deputy AD Diana Sabau, Montana State AD Leon Costello, former ULM AD John Hartwell, and former Arizona AD Dave Heeke, among others. The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) has called a meeting of Big Ten trustees and regents on Friday to discuss the league’s capital proposal, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes: “ACTA is recommending Big Ten presidents abstain from a vote until their boards fully review the capital deal.” (link)

University of California CIO Jagdeep Singh Bachher this week confirmed that “we just made an offer to buy 10% of the Big Ten. … I hope it goes through by…the 21st of November.” Baccher, who made the comments at a conference in Toronto, declined to elaborate on the UC Investments bid following his remarks, but told the audience: “I think the future for our young generation is the one thing that glues people to technology and content: sports. … That creates a whole unique set of opportunities: eSports, media, entertainment, tech. I actually call it cultural capital, not even venture capital or private equity. There’s an incredible opportunity set there. So that’s where I’ve been just immersed, in that whole area. It’s been a lot of fun.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene weighs in on the continuing debate over a new on-campus football stadium for the Panthers, remarking: “At this stage, there isn’t a sense of urgency considering all the dynamics from higher education to the political landscape. There isn’t a sense of urgency for us to make a determination on what we ought to be doing just yet. [...] People have opinions, which are fine. People will make up things that they want. We have a great partnership with the [Pittsburgh] Steelers. This is part of the challenge of having been one year on the job and having had five home games under my belt, I’m still learning this community. Our team is still learning this community. We’re still shaping and formatting our team. We’re still trying to get people in position to actually do the work. There’s a lot of room to grow for us to do better in that space. I’m sure there’s things that our marketing teams have done to help increase fan engagement and fan experience, but we’re nowhere near the capacity that we need to be, so there’s nothing but upside for us. We hope that the community and our fanbase recognizes here pretty soon the work that we’ve put into it and responds and truly takes pride in coming out to support Pitt.” (link)

When asked recently about Maryland Football HC Mike Locksley’s job status, Terps AD Jim Smith didn’t exactly provide a vote of confidence. Smith: “He's gonna coach against Illinois, then he's gonna coach against Michigan, and then he's gonna coach against Michigan State. We got a chance to win three games and go to a bowl game. We can't make a decision right now. That'd be silly. We'll determine at the end of the year where we are.” Per Inside MD Sports’ Jeff Ermann: “Pressure is growing for Smith, who was all but certain to retain Locksley until the season skidded out, in part of because of that $13M parting payment along with an unusually large number of schools in the market for a coach and the likelihood that firing him could send much of a talent-loaded freshman class … to the transfer portal. Smith is in the inevitable position of inheriting a fanbase that's lost patience with the lack of linear progress and big wins, but whose collective mouth doesn't match its wallet. Maryland lacks the sort of football boosters who step up with money when they want to fire a coach. And the football program's revenue ranked 42nd nationally and second-to-last nationally among Big Ten schools. … Given the fan unrest, those receipts could dip next season with empty seats taking over SECU Stadium, where Maryland's attendance was last in the conference next year.” More. The State’s Jordan Kaye profiles Joe Rice, the renowned trial lawyer and longtime South Carolina supporter whose influence spans both the university and Gamecock athletics. Rice, whose name graces both the law school and athletics center, has quietly advised university leaders for decades while helping shape major initiatives like Williams-Brice Stadium’s west-side renovation. He tells Kaye: “They were talking about putting in 80 boxes. And then they told me how they were pricing them and I said, ‘You don’t have the financial support to sell $10M boxes.’ And I don’t think they do.” Rice says of the transition from former AD Ran Tanner to current AD Jeremiah Donati: “Ray did a great job. … He understood the players. But the game has changed from a financial point of view. But Jeremiah is a very good marketing, business guy. And those in charge — and maybe they’re right — felt we needed to change to more of a business-management style versus a player-management style.” Before Tanner hired Football head coach Shane Beamer, he spoke with Rice about who he was looking at and what he was thinking about the future. Tanner: “There might have been a conversation periodically. [But] he was not going to be influential. He was not going to be the person who said, ‘Well, I’ll tell you what we should do. I’ll tell you what needs to be done.’ He’s never been that guy.” (link)

The Big East has renamed its Presidents’ Award in honor of longtime Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman: “The BIG EAST of today was made possible because of Jack's vision and his long-standing determination to preserve the league's priorities, values and history, and his continuing input played a critical role as we managed key decisions and steadily rebuilt our operation and standing. Most of all, Jack implicitly understood the value of athletics in the context of higher education, and the many successes of Georgetown student-athletes are a testament to his ideals.” (link)

The Paul Finebaum Show’s eponymous host remains “very close” to leaving ESPN to jump into national politics, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, who reports: “ESPN’s star SEC radio and TV host is waiting to make a decision on his political future until after the college football season wraps up, sources say. His current contract with ESPN runs through mid-2027. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said this week on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show that Finebaum would make a strong contender but warned he’s “got to be a Trump guy” if he wants to win in Alabama. Tuberville added: “He’s made a name for himself. He’s got 100% name ID in Alabama. But he’s also made everybody mad in Alabama at one time. But that was his job.” (link)

ABC topped a tenth-straight college football Saturday as LSU-Alabama drew 7.54M viewers, but with the Disney networks blacked out on YouTube TV for a second-straight weekend, it was not as dominant as in past weeks, according to Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis, who notes both Fox and CBS placed games in the top three, marking the the first time that ABC did not have at least two of the top three this season. Furthermore, Lewis notes the BYU-Texas Tech matchup (3.98M viewers) was the network’s least-watched game in more than a month. Behind LSU-Bama was Indiana-Penn State, which brought in 6.03M viewers to Fox, Oregon-Iowa (5.37M to CBS), Texas A&M-Missouri (4.87M to ABC), BYU-Texas Tech and Navy-Notre Dame (3.4M to NBC). ESPN’s College Gameday led into Saturday’s action with 2.2M viewers, up from the previous week’s season-low of 2.0M. Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff trailed GameDay by 74% in the 11 AM ET hour, up from 13% the prior week, but down from 153% before the ESPN-YouTube-TV blackout. (link, link)
