Baldwin-Wallace Assoc. AD/Football Committee Chair John Snell dove into the bracket and selection process with In The D3FB Huddle. On the balance of the bracket: “Right now if you look at it, we have ten of the top 20 [teams] on the left side of the bracket and ten of the top 20 on the right side of the bracket, so that’s about as evenly balanced as you can possibly get for a national tournament. I think it’s awesome we were able to do that and that’s hard. Some of it plays into the fact that we tried, again based on the philosophy, to spread some of the teams that were in the same conference around, with travel considerations.” Asked about separating teams that have played each other previously: “The other consideration was try not to have the same teams playing each other every single year. Again, that’s really tough because that portion of the country has a lot of good teams, so to be able to separate them and keep them from playing each other is not an easy task. I think this year we were able to figure out how can we keep it so the same teams aren’t playing each other that have been playing each other every year or every other year, just to give the kids a different experience.” (link); Snell also joined D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast and was asked what has to happen for two Texas teams to not be paired up in their first game. “My initial thought would be, if they're in the top eight, they're going to be separated somehow and they wouldn't play each other until later in the playoffs or possibly the semifinals, or if they're on opposite brackets in the championship. But it would be really hard, if that's not the case, to keep them from playing each other at some point. They're on that island that makes it difficult.” (link)

➤ The NCAA taps Zephyr as the official provider of on-court/on-field headwear celebration products for all NCAA Championships, excluding DI men's and women's basketball, with the CLC-managed agreement granting the company exclusive rights to supply branded headwear for NCAA championship celebrations in sports ranging from baseball and soccer to volleyball, wrestling and more, starting with fall 2025 championships. The championship merchandise will include a range of headwear styles that will be available on-site during NCAA championship events and sold across a variety of retailers, including sporting goods stores, campus stores and direct-to-consumer sites. ➤ CCNY inks a multi-year deal with Hudl to add auto-tracking cameras in Nat Holman Gymnasium for the Beavers’ new centralized streaming destination in Hudl and give coaches access to the platform’s analysis and recruiting tools. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), in a letter to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, “is asking the committee to explore the tax-exempt status of universities given the professionalization of college athletics. She is suggesting revoking the status - a historic and impactful move. … Cantwell cites the athlete revenue-sharing concept, leagues exploring private equity/capital deals and the millions in buyout money schools are paying fired coaches.” Full letter. After Football HC Brian Bubna mandated student-athletes wear Guardian Caps during practice last year, MIT implemented the same rule for games this season. Bubna tells WGBH’s Esteban Bustillos: “If it protects you in practice, then why all of a sudden on gameday would you say, ‘Well, I want to have less protection on gameday,’ when the action is probably more intense? And we’re really going live, tackling to the ground, which is something you don’t really do during the week once you get out of preseason.” The Engineers use one set of caps for games and another for practice, with the MIT equipment staff having to use a hair dryer to strengthen the adhesive of the “Tech” decal on the side. While it took some student-athletes time to get used to the appearance or the change in the “pop” of the helmets, MIT has seen a “downward trend in head injuries, based on their day-to-day observations.” (link)
