University of California System Chief Investment Officer/SVP of Investments Jagdeep Singh Bachher went into some detail with the UC Board of Regents about the Big Ten private equity deal, noting that the “return profile was certainly north of 12-13%. There is no deal on the table thanks to many regental approval processes that need to happen or not. I think college sports is the next attractive opportunity within the whole sports landscape.” Singh Bachher also remarked that “this was an equity investment to buy 10% of Big Ten Enterprises,” adding: “We valued the Enterprises at $24B, and on Day 1 when the entity is set up, its EBITDA is just north of $1B. That would have made it one of the top 10 media and entertainment companies in the world in size and scale. I hope it happens and just request you all do a little prayer for us." Michigan State trustee Mike Balow weighs in on the Big Ten’s proposed deal with UC Investments: "Speaking as just one MSU trustee, and not for the board as a whole, I appreciate all of the hard work that Commissioner Petitti and his staff have done on this, but it does seem highly appropriate that everyone take a pause, and let's ensure that the board members of all 18 member schools have a chance to have all of their questions answered fully. I myself have questions on the implementation of the deal, most importantly on governance and the projected increases in future conference revenues that are part of this deal. … For a contract of this magnitude and duration, it seems appropriate and a hallmark of good governance that Big Ten university boards, and not just university presidents, should approve it.” (link)

Visiting with JohnWallStreet on its Big Business on Campus podcast, Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene offers his thoughts on utilizing AI in college athletics: “I have been on an AI kick for the past probably three years and I’m nowhere where I need to be with understanding it and utilizing it, nor is our department. I think there's a real opportunity for us to increase engagement, increase efficiency, increase creativity. I don’t know if I’m getting more excited about it or I’m just mesmerized by all the capabilities of the entire world of AI. We, not just at Pitt, but even in college athletics, we’ve used AI before. We’ve been using it for a long period of time. We can use AI in a way that makes us better at whatever it is that’s a priority to us. … You can use it in sports data and analytics and sports science. You can use predictive analysis. There are so many things you can do. … It allows us to tap the outer boundaries of our creativity and allows us to be so much more productive. … There’s always a risk, but I think the benefits outweigh the risk.” (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell visits with the Higher Ed Athletics podcast, discusses if there’s any sense of pressure for the Jackrabbits to join FBS: “Fans are having a good time talking about all these things and that's great. They should. Certainly you had realignment, and it's ramped up in the last 15 years, but the realignment started back in the eighties, we've always had it. … My deal is we have to be the best version of us along the way, so hopefully you have some choice as realignment happens. … I've tried to stay away from moving up or down or sideways, who knows what that means? I want to play against really good competition and I want our student athletes to experience the chance to go to championships and to do those things. And that's where as sports we need to keep our focus is around how do we play those schools and the setup right now with the conference structure and other things, create some challenges, geography, we've now spread it all over the place. How do we bring those back to where our fans want to show up to see us play North Dakota State? But our fans also want to see us play Oral Roberts in basketball or UNI in football, and so it's grown. Our fans get who our competition is, but I think that's one thing in athletics we have to keep working at.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that Florida State in response to a FOIA request, “says it spent $2,519,072.47 on athlete rev share payments (across 331 transactions) from July thru September, but wouldn't provide a more specific breakdown of what teams got the money, claiming that info is exempt from disclosure.” (link)

Wisconsin Volleyball HC Kelly Sheffield believes there is “no thing that’s holding college volleyball back more than [the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament being available only on ESPN+]. The hype & energy going into the tournament can only be done at local level instead of nationally because of it. Next contract negotiation between TV & NCAA (or whoever) is incredibly important for our sport.” (link)

NCAA data shows sports-betting harassment of student-athletes remains significant, with 36% of Division I men’s basketball players reporting social-media abuse tied to wagering in the past year and 29% saying they interacted with a student who had bet on their team. Among FBS football student-athletes, 16% reported negative or threatening messages and 26% encountered students who had placed bets. Overall, 7% of DI men’s student-athletes said they received threatening messages from bettors and 9% said students told them they won or lost money on them, while rates were just 1% for women’s sports. The findings come from the SNAP (Student-Athlete Needs, Aspiration and Perspectives) study of nearly 6,800 DI student-athletes and parallel items in the upcoming GOALS survey, as NCAA enforcement continues investigations into roughly 30 MBB student-athletes tied to potential betting violations. The Whitener Company Founder/CEO Gordon Whitener observes in an OutKick op-ed that college sports is “in a state of chaos” and posits that it is headed for systemic failure without immediate, structural reform. To that end, Whitener proposes establishing a College Football Players Association so athletes have a formal voice and shared rights and responsibilities. He also calls for a unified governing entity that represents conferences, schools, networks and players in place of the “untenable” conference-by-conference model. He emphasizes that protecting Olympic, developmental and women’s sports must be a priority, as football can no longer reliably subsidize entire athletic departments. Furthermore, he contends that revenue sharing should be transparent and tied directly to media rights and that student-athlete welfare and education should be overseen by an independent body. Finally, he urges leaders to embrace joint-venture models that align public funding, private capital and brand investment. “College football needs its ‘Summit Moment,’ a gathering where every vested stakeholder confronts the truth and commits to a path forward. I propose to host this meeting in Dallas, Texas, the heart of college football’s power corridor, the week following the CFP National Championship, before spring games and ahead of the next fiscal cycle. History will remember who stepped up and who stood still. College football has always been about courage under pressure. Now it’s your fourth-and-goal moment. If we love this game, truly LOVE it, then it’s time to call the play that saves it.” (link)

More on James Madison’s roll out of the first-ever Marvel Super Hero Day in college athletics for this Saturday’s matchup with Washington State, a promotion designed to guarantee a holiday-week sellout and leverage a co-branded licensing deal for exclusive merchandise and helmet designs. The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen reports the activation includes 15K custom posters, 2K hats, stadium retail drops, player-selectable Marvel helmet marks, and growing national attention as JMU pushes toward a potential CFP résumé. Dukes players will have the option to choose between helmets with the JMU on one side and a Marvel character — Black Panther, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor or the Incredible Hulk — on the other. Asst. AD for Creative Services & Fan Engagement Melissa Wyant explains that the department worked with the JMU Foundation “to figure out how we could make this happen. Everybody was very bought in and understanding that the brand of Marvel can bring in so much for us as well. To be on the stage with that brand is unique. We were really excited to call ourselves the first to execute this at a high level. … It’s a big game for our program. And we just wanted to make it extra special for our fans.” More. (link)

In the first two games since expanding beer and wine sales beyond the premium seating section at Washington State’s Martin Stadium, per-person concession sales have risen 36.7% per CougFan.com’s Jamey Vinnick. Discussing the results of the new policy, WSU COO Jon Haarlow remarked: “For the first two home games of the season (which didn't include expanded alcohol sales), we were selling a per cap (i.e. per person) of $16.32. And then what we saw in games three and four (with expanded sales) was an increase of almost $6 on the dot. … That's a pretty positive increase. I like the trends of where it's going. The whole idea behind this was not for it to be a cash cow, not for it to be a revenue game changer. That would certainly be great, but it was just to have an additional enhancement to the fans to try and drive more ticket sales. Because as ticket sales go, we will go. And that drives more interaction on down the line." More. (link)

The “Michael Vick Effect” is real at Norfolk State, per HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who observes that despite raising season ticket prices by 82%, making changes to the homecoming ticketing system and enduring the program’s worst on-field results since 2015, NSU has still recorded one of its strongest attendance marks of the past decade. The 2025-edition of the Spartans has drawn a total of 106,062 fans over five home contests (21,212 avg.) with that number surpassing the overall attendance number from the 2023 and 2024 seasons combined. According to Gaither, homecoming attendance is “where Vick’s influence becomes even more clear,” as the program drew a record 47,273 fans this year, an increase of 22,313 over 2023. While a new ticketing policy requiring all campus participants to have a valid game ticket for access automatically elevated the count, “the increase was far too large to explain through ticketing alone. The combination of Vick’s star power, national curiosity, and a more controlled event footprint produced the largest homecoming crowd in NSU history.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade will retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 academic year, marking the end of a distinguished 45-year career and an 18-year run leading the league. A-10 Council of Presidents Chair/Dayton President Eric Spina: “As the longest-serving leader in the history of the Atlantic 10, Commissioner McGlade has served with distinction into this, her 18th year, providing leadership and strength in serving the student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Bernadette’s pride in the Atlantic 10 and its extraordinary accomplishments are evident in all she does. Her leadership continues to guide the Atlantic 10 through a transformative time in college athletics and we will rely on her vision and expertise in the months to come. On behalf of the A-10 Council of Presidents, I thank her for all she has done and done so well and congratulate her on an impressive career.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides an update on the SCORE Act, noting the bill is “expected to now have enough support to pass the House, is back on track to reach the floor for a potential vote. Officials have tentatively scheduled it for the first week of December, though that date is fluid.” (link)

The final version of the College Sports Commission’s long-awaited “University Participant Agreement” has been distributed to schools, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes “the agreement, per a copy, requires schools to waive their right to sue the College Sports Commission over enforcement decisions. … All 68 schools must sign the document to activate it as enforceable. Schools are expected to be given two weeks to agree. While new CSC penalties are not finalized, they include (1) limited postseason ban; (2) financial fines; (3) loss of NCAA revenue distribution; and most interesting of all (4) reductions in transfers a school can add + roster/scholarship reductions. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says the league is finally “unfrozen” after resolving its legal disputes with Clemson and Florida State and securing long-term stability with ESPN, allowing the conference to focus on revenue growth, competitive positioning and brand-building initiatives. Phillips tells the AP’s Aaron Beard: “It’s been a welcomed period. And one that has been sensational because it’s allowed us to get back to work on the things that we really have set for priority.” As reported previously, the ACC posted $711.4M in revenue in FY24 with average school payouts of ~$45M, still well behind the Big Ten and SEC but ahead of the Big 12, and Phillips points to two major revenue levers that continue to help the league: adding Cal, Stanford and SMU (projected $600M in incremental gains across the ESPN deal) and shifting from equal distribution to performance-driven payouts. Last season’s “success initiative” resulted in 15-of-18 schools receiving bonuses ranging from $100K to $8M. Phillips: “We’ve been very progressive. We’re looking ahead and feel as if it is very innovative, and that over a course of time, you’re likely to see other leagues doing something similar.” Phillips also talks about the live replay review audio on football broadcasts this season: “We’ve certainly heard from our TV partner that it’s been a huge success, with the responses that they’ve gotten. I can’t tell you the number of people that have written me or stopped me and just said, ‘Hey, Commissioner, what you’ve done with the replay is just exceptional.’” (link)

Maryland President/Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C) Darryll Pines disputes Michigan regent Mark Bernstein’s claim that Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti attempted to “strong-arm” U-M to accept the league’s private equity proposal: “After receiving interest from third-party investors, we formed a working group chaired by then-President (Santa J.) Ono of the University of Michigan to explore and evaluate all options on behalf of our members and the more than 12,000 student athletes in the Big Ten. Since we first met in 2024, this has been a collaborative, fair and thorough process that included the University of Michigan. Any other characterization of the work of the COP/C and the conference office is inaccurate.” The AP’s Larry Lage also notes USC AD Jennifer Cohen was “lukewarm” about the deal in a letter to supporters last week, writing: “We greatly value our membership in the Big Ten Conference and understand and respect the larger landscape. But we also recognize the power of the USC brand is far-reaching, deeply engaging and incredibly valuable, and we will always fight first for what’s best for USC.” (link)

Elevate’s new Unlocking the Full Potential of Your Stadium report outlines how Power 4 programs are entering a $5.8B+ stadium-renovation cycle driven by NIL, revenue sharing and rising donor expectations. With football now generating 54-60% of total athletics revenue across the Power 4, Elevate frames the stadium as a school’s most valuable — and most underleveraged — physical asset. The report highlights a structural gap between college and NFL venues: the median P4 stadium opened in 1930 (vs. 2001 in the NFL), creating pressure to replace outdated bench seating, constrained concourses and limited hospitality spaces. Elevate also identifies three trends shaping the current wave of investment: (1) premium-seating optimization, noting that while premium inventory averages ~12% of seats, it generates ~46% of ticket revenue and can deliver 400%+ per-seat uplift; (2) activating stadiums beyond gameday, with concerts in P4 venues rising from ~9 per year pre-COVID to ~14 annually in 2023–24, plus new mixed-use entertainment districts (e.g., Tennessee’s Neyland Entertainment District, Iowa State’s CyTown); and (3) meeting rising fan expectations, with surveys showing 90%+ of fans want stadium upgrades and the majority prioritizing improved concessions, self-checkout, mobile ordering/pickup, modern restrooms, comfort seating and robust Wi-Fi. Elevate concludes that modernization is becoming essential in the NIL/revenue-sharing era, with schools that treat their stadiums as year-round commercial assets — not just football venues — best positioned to generate sustainable revenue and maintain competitive advantage. More Facilities & Fundraising… ➤ UC Davis releases its $265M gift-driven “Aggie Ascent” facilities master plan, which “includes $50M in new premier seating” for UC Davis Health Stadium, with new suites, loge boxes, banquet space and more; an $18.7M golf training center; and a new $14.5M Track & Field facility. More details: “Future phases will expand and elevate Baseball, Soccer, and the University Credit Union Center venues. A new Softball stadium with locker rooms, team spaces, and fan amenities will join the golf training center to transform south campus as LaRue Field has been designated for redevelopment after 2035.” AD Rocko DeLuca: "As we transition into the Mountain West Conference, Aggie Ascent is about more than facilities — it's about aligning with the future of Division I athletics. View the renderings. (link, link) ➤ Army announces the suite, loge and ledge seating within the currently under construction East Stands of Michie Stadium have sold out with only a limited number of club seats remaining available for the 2026 football season and beyond. Army AD Tom Theodorakis: “We are extremely pleased with the progress of the transformational Michie Stadium Preservation Project and all that it will accomplish to elevate game-day for our passionate fans and the Corps of Cadets. Fans enjoying our new suites and premium seating will have an unprecedented experience with the Corps of Cadets seating directly below them stretching end zone to end zone, amplifying the energy and support for the cadet-athletes on the field.” (link) ➤ UT Arlington receives a $500K commitment from former Men’s Golf student-athlete David Daniel to support the Athletics Excellence Fund, ensuring UTA student-athletes have the resources they need to succeed on the field and in the classroom. (link) ➤ Texas Football HC Steve Sarkisian addresses rumors surrounding his coaching future with the Longhorns: “People [are] reporting or insinuating that there’s a possibility I could leave the University of Texas -- and that’s absolutely false and untrue. I am not going anywhere." (link) ➤ “From the board, the president, the athletic director, the head football coach.. … There’s no other way to do it. It really started with the plan and it started with the alignment and then after that, it was, ‘Does this make sense for both parties and are we going to be able to achieve all our hopes and goals here?’ I think we’re going to be able to do that.” That was new Virginia Tech Football HC James Franklin during his intro today, adding of VT’s push to hire him: “They were aggressive. And what I will also say, thanks to the leadership of everybody, is what was very obvious to me very early on, is that they had a plan. They had a plan. […] If we truly have the expectations and the standards of where we want to go, then our commitment must match those expectations.” (link)

ABC and ESPN’s college football ratings rebounded last Saturday following the resolution of the carriage dispute between Disney and YouTube TV, according to Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey, who notes that with Oklahoma-Alabama (10.5M - ABC) and Texas-Georgia (10.4M - ABC) each topping 10M viewers, it marked just the third time since 1996 that a single network drew 10 million-plus viewers for multiple games. Including the Notre Dame-Pittsburgh (4M - ABC) contest, the tripleheader was also ABC’s second-most-watched of the season. ESPN’s match-up between South Carolina and Texas A&M drew 4.3M viewers to rate third on the list of the weekend’s most watched games. (link)
