Big Chair Developments…
➤ Baylor AD Mack Rhoades is expected to step down, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who adds: “He’s on leave from the school for personal reasons, and the sides are planning to announce he’s stepping away immediately.” (link)
➤ Duke has appointed AD Nina King to a new term ending June 30, 2031. (link)
➤ Florida International AD Scott Carr has received a three-year, $400K contract extension, per the Miami Herald’s Walter Villa, who notes the deal is set to expire on Nov. 30, 2028. (link)
➤ Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones believes UK AD Mitch Barnhart’s tenure with the Wildcats could soon be coming to an end. Jones: “I am more confident about this than I was yesterday. This is Mitch’s last year. I just want that on the record. I think we’re gonna be getting a new Athletic Director at the end of the year. I don’t know that (when asked when Barnhart will retire), I can’t say when he’ll announce it. I just feel like that’s very, very likely. I think there’s lots of things that point to it, including a couple of things like … remember when he had a donation thing where he was donating so much for that complex that ends at the end of this year? Just a lot of stuff, that when talking to people, there’s a good chance there’s a new AD. And then the question will be ‘who is that?’ I think if you had to guess, it would be one of two people, which is either (DePaul Athletic Director) DeWayne Peevy or the guy who has his job now, [UK Deputy AD] Marc Hill. My guess is it’s one of those two guys and that consistency continues.” More. (link)
➤ ULM has formed a six-person AD search committee that will be chaired by Provost Michelle McEacharn. (link)

CNBC’s Alex Sherman & Contessa Brewer report Learfield “is in the final stages of selling itself” with interested parties described as “a small group of private equity funds.” The pair indicate Learfield’s EBITDA is currently “just shy of $200M,” which along with a sub-3x leverage ratio, is generating bids of more than $2B. (link); However, a source close to the situation pushed back on the notion that a deal is “imminent” or “assured,” per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. More from Portnoy: “...industry sources say the company could move into the later stages of discussions in the coming months. Moelis & Company and Bank of America have been retained to assist Learfield in their explorations, sources said. Learfield is evaluating three primary paths: 1) Maintaining its current structure; 2) Selling a minority equity stake to secure additional capital for various initiatives; or, 3) Pursuing a full sale that would shift majority ownership. The company is unlikely to sell individual business units -- such as Collegiate Licensing Company or ticketing platform Paciolan -- sources said.” (link)

Michigan Board of Regents Chair Mark Bernstein made the following statement regarding the Big Ten’s $2.4B deal on behalf of the board: “We remain opposed to this deal. Importantly, we are committed to the Big Ten Conference and will continue to explore opportunities that address the pressing financial challenges facing Big Ten athletic departments.” (link)

Power conferences are pushing back against the NCAA’s recent decision to lift the prohibition on pro sports gambling for college athletes and staff members, according to Ross Dellenger, who for On3 notes that of 148 schools that have thus far voted in favor of rescinding the decision, 54 of them come from Power 4 leagues. That’s almost 80% of the 68 power conference programs that believe college athletes should not be permitted to bet on pro sports. Georgia President Jere Morehead: “When in NCAA history have that many P4 institutions called for rescission of an NCAA action? Once the NCAA opens the door to gambling, it increases the chances of our student-athletes moving beyond betting in professional sports. Moreover, some of the student-athletes will become professional athletes. Do we really expect they will stop gambling as professional athletes, what the NCAA allowed in college?” Dellenger notes that if the threshold isn’t reached, there are other avenues: “In fact, according to the NCAA, individual schools and conferences are free to create their own policies on this subject. A conference or school ban on pro sports betting is possible. But that creates an uneven environment of conflicting policies from school to school.” More. (link)

Was Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State’s move from the Mountain West to the new Pac-12 really worth it? That’s the question Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray poses with the relative silence surrounding the Pac-12’s new media rights deal with CBS, The CW and USA Network. Noting the five former MW schools have essentially swapped the established FOX Sports for the fledgling CW and USA Sports networks, Murray observes: “From a media-rights perspective, this is a lateral move, at best. And in exchange for that lateral move, the five departing MW schools … plus the Pac-12 owe the MW around $150M in exit fees and poaching penalties, which they are fighting over in court. Perhaps that's because the television money floated when those five schools accepted the Pac-12 invitations hasn't come to fruition. … Will the Pac-12 have a better media-rights deal than the MW moving forward? Without a doubt. … But it's not clear the new Pac-12 deal is netting a better media-rights deal than a reverse merger with the entire MW could have secured.” More. (link)

According to Iowa Board of Regents financial reporting, Northern Iowa Athletics overspent its budget by more than $3.2M in FY25 – a 22% overrun – according to The Northern Iowan’s Lily Munnik, who notes UNI allocated an additional $963,645 in institutional support to help cover the shortfall driven by rising expenditures and revenue gaps. Minnik: “Overall, athletics revenues actually finished $300K above the budget. However, the boost was tempered by declines in other areas, notably alumni/foundation support and NCAA revenue distributions, which prevented the department from closing the gap amid rising expenses. The cost overruns were driven largely by team operational expenses running higher than planned across both men’s and women’s sports. … Postseason travel, a byproduct of competitive success, also contributed to rising costs. A significant portion of the excess spending stemmed from unbudgeted personnel expenses, including bonuses awarded under coaching contracts in volleyball, wrestling, men’s track and field and men’s and women’s basketball. Overall, UNI Athletics received $5,447,481 in general university support, along with $1,793,176 in student fee revenue. The Board of Regents has not yet indicated whether additional oversight or financial requirements will be imposed.” (link)

George Washington Men’s Basketball HC Chris Caputo on big schools freezing the Atlantic 10 out of multi-team events and NET challenges: “GW could go play three high-major schools on a neutral site 10 years ago [in a multi-team event]. Those days are over. They won’t play the games. They just will not play the games. They don’t even want you in the events. You can call the events and say you want to play and they’re like, ‘no, you’re not in. We’re not doing it.’ What you wind up finding is now you’ve got to find these neutral site games that are within the top 100 that are like yourself, South Florida, potentially McNeese, all these games to try to get quad one and two games. … Obviously, you can get Florida on a neutral site, which is great, but that’s a quad one that’s in the top 10. If I tried to get the 40th best team, they wouldn’t [play.] … I just saw we’re the highest-rated KenPom team in the Atlantic 10, so we’re clearly, as of today, a quad two game for people. Maybe even a quad one in certain situations, right? It’s just so challenging in this landscape and the fix is in. The NET, it is what it is. … We all know what it is. You can’t manipulate it.” (link)

“Aggie Ascent”: A bold facilities vision built for the
next era of UC Davis Athletics
|
"As we transition into the Mountain West Conference, Aggie Ascent is about more than facilities — it's about aligning with the future of Division I athletics." - Rocko DeLuca, Director of Athletics.
Aggie Ascent outlines a $265 million phased, gift-driven approach that allows UC Davis to advance projects as leadership gifts and partnerships are secured. Early priorities include revenue-generating and high-impact facilities that expand community engagement and elevate game-day atmosphere, including:
➤ UC Davis Health Stadium: A reimagined fan experience anchored by new premium seating, suites, and a hospitality concourse. The $50 million expansion will include a special event space to be used year-round by the university community.
➤ Woody Wilson Track & Field Complex: A new NCAA-compliant, eight-lane facility with west-facing spectator seating, integrating all events — including throws — into a single venue with an option to add team spaces and restrooms with a total cost of $14.5 million.
➤ Golf Training Center: A 350-yard driving range, with short game and putting greens, that will have dual roles serving our golf programs as well as the surrounding communities. The anticipated project cost $18.7 million.

University of California System Chief Investment Officer/SVP of Investments Jagdeep Singh Bachher went into some detail with the UC Board of Regents about the Big Ten private equity deal, noting that the “return profile was certainly north of 12-13%. There is no deal on the table thanks to many regental approval processes that need to happen or not. I think college sports is the next attractive opportunity within the whole sports landscape.” Singh Bachher also remarked that “this was an equity investment to buy 10% of Big Ten Enterprises,” adding: “We valued the Enterprises at $24B, and on Day 1 when the entity is set up, its EBITDA is just north of $1B. That would have made it one of the top 10 media and entertainment companies in the world in size and scale. I hope it happens and just request you all do a little prayer for us." Michigan State trustee Mike Balow weighs in on the Big Ten’s proposed deal with UC Investments: "Speaking as just one MSU trustee, and not for the board as a whole, I appreciate all of the hard work that Commissioner Petitti and his staff have done on this, but it does seem highly appropriate that everyone take a pause, and let's ensure that the board members of all 18 member schools have a chance to have all of their questions answered fully. I myself have questions on the implementation of the deal, most importantly on governance and the projected increases in future conference revenues that are part of this deal. … For a contract of this magnitude and duration, it seems appropriate and a hallmark of good governance that Big Ten university boards, and not just university presidents, should approve it.” (link)

Visiting with JohnWallStreet on its Big Business on Campus podcast, Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene offers his thoughts on utilizing AI in college athletics: “I have been on an AI kick for the past probably three years and I’m nowhere where I need to be with understanding it and utilizing it, nor is our department. I think there's a real opportunity for us to increase engagement, increase efficiency, increase creativity. I don’t know if I’m getting more excited about it or I’m just mesmerized by all the capabilities of the entire world of AI. We, not just at Pitt, but even in college athletics, we’ve used AI before. We’ve been using it for a long period of time. We can use AI in a way that makes us better at whatever it is that’s a priority to us. … You can use it in sports data and analytics and sports science. You can use predictive analysis. There are so many things you can do. … It allows us to tap the outer boundaries of our creativity and allows us to be so much more productive. … There’s always a risk, but I think the benefits outweigh the risk.” (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell visits with the Higher Ed Athletics podcast, discusses if there’s any sense of pressure for the Jackrabbits to join FBS: “Fans are having a good time talking about all these things and that's great. They should. Certainly you had realignment, and it's ramped up in the last 15 years, but the realignment started back in the eighties, we've always had it. … My deal is we have to be the best version of us along the way, so hopefully you have some choice as realignment happens. … I've tried to stay away from moving up or down or sideways, who knows what that means? I want to play against really good competition and I want our student athletes to experience the chance to go to championships and to do those things. And that's where as sports we need to keep our focus is around how do we play those schools and the setup right now with the conference structure and other things, create some challenges, geography, we've now spread it all over the place. How do we bring those back to where our fans want to show up to see us play North Dakota State? But our fans also want to see us play Oral Roberts in basketball or UNI in football, and so it's grown. Our fans get who our competition is, but I think that's one thing in athletics we have to keep working at.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that Florida State in response to a FOIA request, “says it spent $2,519,072.47 on athlete rev share payments (across 331 transactions) from July thru September, but wouldn't provide a more specific breakdown of what teams got the money, claiming that info is exempt from disclosure.” (link)

Wisconsin Volleyball HC Kelly Sheffield believes there is “no thing that’s holding college volleyball back more than [the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament being available only on ESPN+]. The hype & energy going into the tournament can only be done at local level instead of nationally because of it. Next contract negotiation between TV & NCAA (or whoever) is incredibly important for our sport.” (link)

NCAA data shows sports-betting harassment of student-athletes remains significant, with 36% of Division I men’s basketball players reporting social-media abuse tied to wagering in the past year and 29% saying they interacted with a student who had bet on their team. Among FBS football student-athletes, 16% reported negative or threatening messages and 26% encountered students who had placed bets. Overall, 7% of DI men’s student-athletes said they received threatening messages from bettors and 9% said students told them they won or lost money on them, while rates were just 1% for women’s sports. The findings come from the SNAP (Student-Athlete Needs, Aspiration and Perspectives) study of nearly 6,800 DI student-athletes and parallel items in the upcoming GOALS survey, as NCAA enforcement continues investigations into roughly 30 MBB student-athletes tied to potential betting violations. The Whitener Company Founder/CEO Gordon Whitener observes in an OutKick op-ed that college sports is “in a state of chaos” and posits that it is headed for systemic failure without immediate, structural reform. To that end, Whitener proposes establishing a College Football Players Association so athletes have a formal voice and shared rights and responsibilities. He also calls for a unified governing entity that represents conferences, schools, networks and players in place of the “untenable” conference-by-conference model. He emphasizes that protecting Olympic, developmental and women’s sports must be a priority, as football can no longer reliably subsidize entire athletic departments. Furthermore, he contends that revenue sharing should be transparent and tied directly to media rights and that student-athlete welfare and education should be overseen by an independent body. Finally, he urges leaders to embrace joint-venture models that align public funding, private capital and brand investment. “College football needs its ‘Summit Moment,’ a gathering where every vested stakeholder confronts the truth and commits to a path forward. I propose to host this meeting in Dallas, Texas, the heart of college football’s power corridor, the week following the CFP National Championship, before spring games and ahead of the next fiscal cycle. History will remember who stepped up and who stood still. College football has always been about courage under pressure. Now it’s your fourth-and-goal moment. If we love this game, truly LOVE it, then it’s time to call the play that saves it.” (link)

More on James Madison’s roll out of the first-ever Marvel Super Hero Day in college athletics for this Saturday’s matchup with Washington State, a promotion designed to guarantee a holiday-week sellout and leverage a co-branded licensing deal for exclusive merchandise and helmet designs. The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen reports the activation includes 15K custom posters, 2K hats, stadium retail drops, player-selectable Marvel helmet marks, and growing national attention as JMU pushes toward a potential CFP résumé. Dukes players will have the option to choose between helmets with the JMU on one side and a Marvel character — Black Panther, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor or the Incredible Hulk — on the other. Asst. AD for Creative Services & Fan Engagement Melissa Wyant explains that the department worked with the JMU Foundation “to figure out how we could make this happen. Everybody was very bought in and understanding that the brand of Marvel can bring in so much for us as well. To be on the stage with that brand is unique. We were really excited to call ourselves the first to execute this at a high level. … It’s a big game for our program. And we just wanted to make it extra special for our fans.” More. (link)

In the first two games since expanding beer and wine sales beyond the premium seating section at Washington State’s Martin Stadium, per-person concession sales have risen 36.7% per CougFan.com’s Jamey Vinnick. Discussing the results of the new policy, WSU COO Jon Haarlow remarked: “For the first two home games of the season (which didn't include expanded alcohol sales), we were selling a per cap (i.e. per person) of $16.32. And then what we saw in games three and four (with expanded sales) was an increase of almost $6 on the dot. … That's a pretty positive increase. I like the trends of where it's going. The whole idea behind this was not for it to be a cash cow, not for it to be a revenue game changer. That would certainly be great, but it was just to have an additional enhancement to the fans to try and drive more ticket sales. Because as ticket sales go, we will go. And that drives more interaction on down the line." More. (link)

The “Michael Vick Effect” is real at Norfolk State, per HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who observes that despite raising season ticket prices by 82%, making changes to the homecoming ticketing system and enduring the program’s worst on-field results since 2015, NSU has still recorded one of its strongest attendance marks of the past decade. The 2025-edition of the Spartans has drawn a total of 106,062 fans over five home contests (21,212 avg.) with that number surpassing the overall attendance number from the 2023 and 2024 seasons combined. According to Gaither, homecoming attendance is “where Vick’s influence becomes even more clear,” as the program drew a record 47,273 fans this year, an increase of 22,313 over 2023. While a new ticketing policy requiring all campus participants to have a valid game ticket for access automatically elevated the count, “the increase was far too large to explain through ticketing alone. The combination of Vick’s star power, national curiosity, and a more controlled event footprint produced the largest homecoming crowd in NSU history.” (link)
