Multiple DIII football playoff games experienced issues with their streams on ESPN+ this weekend. In The D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi heard from individuals at multiple sites who pointed to ESPN as the source of the potential issue after initial tests prior to gameday were successful and took issue with their lack of support, with one individual stating: “[T]he NCAA has tasked us with the impossible, and getting this news and information out is important. ... [W]ithout eyes on from above at the NCAA and ESPN, I'm unsure how it gets better moving forward through this year's tournament and in the future.” More from Rossi. (link); Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh does not believe the problem solely lies with ESPN’s technology, as there were not widespread issues across the worldwide leader. McHugh: “What I think is happening is that’s our hiccup; something in the IT systems on those campuses is flagging this, restricting the broadcast, throttling it; that’s what I visually was seeing. … It’s not all on ESPN. It’s not on all of the schools and the productions. There’s a cacophony of issues there with one big central one, I think. Get all those solved and we’ll be fine. … I think in general the entire process has to be a little bit to get more people involved in these conversations when something new comes on-site to do these streams so that everybody is prepared.” (link); D3football replies: “A lot of it is ESPN. A lot of it is the NCAA pushing this on understaffed Division III schools. Some of it is on athletics. Sometimes, some of it is even on a school's IT department. Lots of things, not just one, coalesced into the imperfect storm we saw yesterday.” (link)

Otterbein AD Greg Lott joins the Significant Coaching Podcast with Matt Rogers to discuss hiring and professional development. When making a HC hire, Lott’s first step is to step back and objectively evaluate a program’s culture, competitiveness, roster size and expectations to inform what kind of coach the program needs. “Because realistically, I can get a coach that's really good in an area. I can't get a coach very often that comes to me that's exceptional in every area. If they were exceptional in every area, they would be able to demand the salary that I'm priced out of that market.” From there, Lott works backwards to evaluate candidates’ strengths and weaknesses compared to the needs of the program. Professional development at Otterbein is an intentional effort from Lott who organizes head coaching pods that have autonomy to meet and discuss topics that matter to them. This provided coaches, who often have a great ability to figure things out, with an experience to “facilitate deep engagement.” More. (link)

Wisconsin-Whitewater led the football regular season in average attendance with over 10K fans, followed by Saint John’s, Hampden-Sydney, Maryville and Baldwin Wallace. Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown recapped Saturday’s Extra Points Bowl and shared some of the highlights and challenges with hosting and promoting the event. On the positive side, year two ran smoother, as many people involved had not run a bowl game prior to last year, the trophy was larger this season and all student-athletes received the same shirt that all FBS bowl-participating teams received. One meaningful challenge, per Brown: “the calendar. The bowl announcements aren’t set each year until after the NCAA playoff bracket is announced, which happens a week before the games. […] That’s not a big deal, logistics-wise, but it does make it much harder to promote the game in advance, build a meaningful content schedule or do many of the other promotional activities that other bowl games might do.” More from Brown: “We sponsor these games because we care deeply about college sports at all levels, including D-III. I’m an Ohio guy, and I want small college athletics to be successful, so cutting a check, writing newsletters and showing up is something that easily lines up with my personal values. It’s also a restorative event, seeing how much this game means to the players, parents, coaches, and administrators. I also recognize that I have a responsibility to be a good steward of our resources, and we want to make sure that our marketing expenses don’t just line up with what makes us feel good, but with our business goals as well. I think we’ll need to do some more thinking about how we can best combine our personal goals with what we need to help Extra Points as a business.” (link)

Despite the Trump administration’s “unprecedented” slowdown of federal science funding, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) dispersed approximately the same amount of grant funding during the recently-completed fiscal year as they did the year before, reports Inside Higher Ed’s Ryan Quinn, who notes that per the journal Science, the “NSF committed approximately $8.17B to grants, fellowships, and other funding mechanisms in the 2025 fiscal year”—which ended Sept. 30—“about the same as in 2024,” while finding that NIH spending also remained level. The research funding agencies did reduce the number of newly awarded grants; however, the NSF funded about 8,800 new research project grants, down from 11K in 2024, with one anonymous NSF staffer noting this “was one of several changes designed to reduce the agency’s future financial obligations, in case Trump’s proposed budget cut is realized.” The analysis also found that the agency reduced from 2,600 to 1,100 “the number of new continuing grants, and ‘forward funded’ a number of existing continuing grants.” Congress has yet to decide how much to fund NSF in the current fiscal year.
