NCAA President Charlie Baker has sent Congressional members a letter urging them to vote yes on the SCORE Act with Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich noting a vote is expected to be “called for Wednesday, but could change.” From the letter: “This week, when you vote on the SCORE Act, you have the chance to secure a sustainable and equitable future for college sports. This legislation, which is supported by student-athlete representatives and schools across all three divisions and subdivisions, including 31 Division I conferences, addresses the threats facing college sports in limited, sensible, and effective ways.” Full letter text. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports on a newly-introduced college sports bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA) titled the “College Athletics Reform Act (CARA), which establishes a federal NIL policy, creates a bi-partisan commission for governance recs & amends [the] Sports Broadcasting Act.” In response to the news, Kennyhertz Perry LLC attorney Mit Winter writes: “This bill would kill the CSC & the House settlement. It prohibits the NCAA/CSC from restricting athletes from receiving NIL [money] and from taking adverse action against athletes because of receipt of NIL [money]. It also prevents athletes from being required to disclose NIL deals” and “allows states and athletes to sue to enjoin and enforce violations of the bill. International athletes would also be able to receive NIL [money] in the same manner as US athletes.” (link, link); Full bill text. (link)

More from Adams State AD Katelyn Smith’s Small College Conversation, as she shares about how she grew to delegate more through her transition from business manager to AD: “It really was for me to kind of reach a breaking point in a sense of just like, ‘Wow, this is not sustainable.’ Also hiring the right people. We had a lot of staff transition and turnover, and I really found it was just being very deliberate in who I was hiring and then for me to again, kind of pull off the leash a little bit, let's trust my staff and just being able to instill in them that they can do it, and for me to trust them that I don't have to be involved in everything.” Further: “I've really tried to build my staff up in that way and just let them know that I trust them to do it. In examining consolidation within the sports tech industry, SBJ’s Joe Lemire reports that Hudl’s rapid expansion continues, with the Lincoln-based company now serving 325K teams across 40 sports and making 18 acquisitions to date. Hudl Co-Founder/CEO David Graff says the company evaluates build/partner/buy options with discipline: “We are a technology company first, so we have that natural bias towards build, but over the years, we’ve done a great job of taking a pretty agnostic, very data-driven approach to really looking at all three dynamics and then really assessing them on each of their own merits, regardless of where our natural bias may be.” Meanwhile, Catapult CEO Will Lopes outlines where the broader industry sits on the tech adoption curve: “The sports world is somewhere between the digitization and optimization space, depending on which sport and which leagues you’re talking to.” Overall, Lopes believes disruption is still early: “I am so bullish on the industry that I don’t know if acquisition is a necessary path for growth. I actually think the world of sport has not been disrupted by technology yet.” (link)

It was a jam-packed edition of CRO.ticker last Tuesday, as the Wall Street Journal’s Katie Deighton examined the surge in non-sports executives landing top marketing roles across in the sports industry. The issue included an in-depth conversation with Endeavor Ari Emanuel on the Invest Like the Best podcast and a look at how marketers are responding to the “year of brand crises.” There’s also this from Perion Global CMO Erin McCallion: “We’re entering a pivotal year for marketing. There’s a lot of talk about the complexity of marketing. The expectations from the C-suite just keep rising. We really wanted to understand where the tension points are and what’s helping the CMOs and CFO stay better aligned. … Having that shared language and the shared understanding of what investments are driving business outcomes are very important.” Lots more. Over half of 183 employers surveyed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers rate next spring’s Class of 2026 graduate-hiring job market as poor or fair, per The Wall Street Journal’s Lindsay Ellis, who notes the outlook rates as the “most pessimistic” since the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. A cooling job market and companies tracking an uncertain economic outlook has led to mass layoffs and more conservative hiring practices while the growth of artificial intelligence portends the potential for deep job cuts. Ellis: “For college seniors, that means they are also competing against junior workers who have been recently laid off. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates was 4.8% in June, greater than overall unemployment that month and the highest June level for recent graduates in four years. … Overall, employers say they expect a 1.6% increase in hiring for the Class of 2026, down considerably from their plans for the Class of 2025 last fall. … Christine Cruzvergara, Handshake’s chief education strategy officer, said employers are falling into three buckets. Some have paused hiring amid economic uncertainty, some have laid off staff in the name of efficiency and some are growing modestly.” Former Automation Anywhere Entry-Level Recruiter and Internship Program Director Giavanna Vega described the hiring environment as at a standstill. ‘Because we’re in a state of uncertainty, they don’t know where to invest,’ she said of companies’ recruiting strategies amid tariffs and AI developments. That is coming down harder on new graduates: ‘They don’t have the training.’” More. (link)
