Utah President Taylor Randall acknowledges the need for the Utes’ athletic department to restructure to remain competitive in the ever-evolving world of collegiate athletics, per The Daily Utah Chronicle's John Leone. Randall: “Athletics, generally, are a big, big part of a college experience, particularly for this university. I spent 12 years as dean of the business school, and I saw the transition into the Pac-12 and the different profile that we had among students coming out of high school … just gave us a huge lift. [...] We certainly can see a future in the Big 12. Independent of what scenario emerges, we know that we have to continually invest in the athletics brand so that it remains competitive. We also have to invest in the student experience. Our athletics department does spend a lot of time trying to make sure that not only do the students succeed on the field, but they also have great outcomes in terms of graduation. Our graduation rates are always high. That’s something that I’m going to continue to invest in. Nobody can predict the future right now of athletics. So we’re spending a lot of time thinking about what the next 10 years look like.” More. (link)

More from SBJ’s Ben Portnoy on athletic departments folding business operations into LLCs, as Portnoy notes Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart said the school designed its new Champions Blue LLC to accelerate business functions while staying aligned with institutional values. “It is really important for Kentucky to make sure mission and business can live together and that we have educational, competitive decisions that align with business decisions that are entrepreneurial and that give us a chance to walk together.” Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt said the creation of Texas Tech Athletics Partners LLC is central to preparing for revenue sharing: “I want us to steward and build the same healthy relationships with our corporate community as we have with our donor community. Once we do that, we are going to continue to see elevation and amplification of the Texas Tech athletic brand.” Michigan State AD J Batt emphasized readiness: “There’s going to be a lot that develops [in college sports]. But a lot of that’s TBD. A lot of this is moving to a place where you’re prepared to take on change and challenge, and this sort of an organization allows you to do that.” (link)

Tulsa AD Justin Moore and New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo join The CALS Report to discuss how they, as new ADs, are navigating the unprecedented change within the industry. Moore explains: “I think what surprised me is how few people really understand a lot of the things that we're dealing with. … I think a lot of times it's even your staff in the department and even sometimes your coaches that don't really understand the intricacies of all of the new rules and what's the difference between revenue sharing versus NIL and how are the roster caps going to work. And so I think because we live in it every day and we spend so much time down in the weeds, sometimes you assume that people understand it maybe a little bit better than they actually do.” Lovo agrees, adding: “I just think the speed of the way things are moving and then, you know, in our chairs we have to maintain some sense of levity right in the midst of this chaos and I think as Justin said, part of that's educating, part of that's being a leader that provides clarity to our teams, you know, and that is teams across campus and our community, whatever it might be.” (link)

Vanderbilt has distributed a document laying out its College Football Playoff case based on how the Commodores have performed against metrics the selection committee says it values, strength of schedule, margin of victory, advanced metrics, and QB Diego Pavia, among other arguments. On Pavia: “If the CFP wants a show, this is the quarterback.” Also from the document: “Bottom line: No bubble team has a stronger combination of résumé, advanced metrics, ranked wins, dominance, offensive efficiency, and a marquee quarterback. Vanderbilt is a Top-10 team by every modern measurement - and a Top-4 entertainment value.” (link)

Charlotte has raised roughly $3.3M of its $5M goal for football roster construction for the 2026 season, according to the Charlotte Observer’s Hunter Bailey, who adds: “For reference, this season’s roster valuation was around $1.4M.” (link)

The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks examines Tennessee Football’s NIL negotiation process with 2026 recruits from offer to payment, noting that when the early signing period begins on Dec. 3, recruits will sign a revenue-sharing contract to receive a portion of $13.5M in player payroll allotted to Vol football along with their scholarship agreement — that is, unless those with the most leverage want to enroll at UT and then hold out for more money or better terms. Sparks: “During an official visit, recruits meet with players, coaches, staff, administrators and academic advisors. They tour Neyland Stadium, team facilities and academic buildings. … But time is also carved out for the recruit and their family to meet with the NIL staff. … [Executive Assoc. AD JB] Bowling and Will Watkins, Assoc. AD for NIL Operations, make an initial offer of how much UT plans to pay the recruit once he enrolls. … Informal talks between UT and high school prospects during the recruitment phase informs a starting point for negotiations, and then a sports agent or attorney representing the player gets involved.” Bowling: “You’re giving the first number to the player and their family. Then we do (negotiations with agents) on Zoom or on (phone) calls. And we meet some people in person. … If there were certain things that are non-negotiable, then you would hope to hear it during the recruitment. But we may go back and forth on negotiations if there are hiccups.” More. (link)

➤ Disney is working toward an early-2026 announcement of CEO Bob Iger’s successor, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Ben Fritz, Isabella Simonetti and Joe Flint, who report the leading internal contenders are parks chief Josh D’Amaro and entertainment co-chair Dana Walden. Both presented their CEO visions to the board this summer. Fritz, et al. also note that although the board has evaluated external candidates such as Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson, internal promotion is widely expected. They add: “ESPN head Jimmy Pitaro, Disney’s other top operating executive, has expressed he is in his ‘dream job’ and doesn’t expect to become CEO given his lack of experience in scripted entertainment and parks, according to people with knowledge of the matter. His contract has multiple years left on it.” (link)

Yahoo’s Jeff Eisenberg notes the “debate raged last March after a historically chalky opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. Would the one-two punch of a soaring NIL market and a lack of transfer restrictions actually kill off Cinderella? Or were the scorching hot takes a wild overreaction? It's too soon to conclusively answer those questions, but the opening month of the new season has provided some fresh data. And so far all of it suggests that the gap between deep-pocketed high majors and everyone else is widening rapidly. There were 378 matchups this November between high-majors and non-Gonzaga teams from other conferences. The little guy only won 22 of them – less than 6%. How does that winning percentage compare to previous seasons? It's by far the lowest of the past decade, my research found. In the past you could typically count on at least one true mid-major to ascend to national relevance. Butler. Wichita State. Dayton. Loyola Chicago. FAU. Not this year, so far. Besides Gonzaga, not a single team from outside the power conferences has cracked the AP Top 25.” (link)

The UCF Board of Trustees is expected to discuss and possibly vote on Thursday whether to host the Cheez-It Citrus and Pop-Tarts Bowls, plus the Florida Classic at Acrisure Bounce House Stadium next season, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, who reports: “If the board of trustees moved ahead with a vote, it would give the UCFAA the authority to enter into an agreement with [Florida Citrus Sports, which hosts all three events], but it wouldn’t necessarily mean the school is officially hosting. UCF would still need to negotiate, reach an agreement, and sign a contract. It’s also worth noting that the school won’t have clarity on the 2026 Big 12 schedule until late January or early February, which could create a scheduling issue with the Florida Classic if a home game falls on the same day.” (link)

Florida State has added a game against New Mexico State to its 2026 football schedule, according to FBSchedules.com, which notes the contest will be held at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 29. The match-up is eligible to be played in Week Zero because the Aggies are scheduled to play in Hawaii next season. As part of the contract, FSU will pay NMSU a $1.4M guarantee. (link)

Missouri is the 39th U.S. state to legalize sports betting as sportsbooks officially opened Monday at 12:01 a.m., “allowing people to legally place bets on sports from their phones and computers, or at licensed casinos and professional sports venues.” Several casinos around the state are “licensed to operate retail sportsbooks,” and Missouri law “allows each of the state’s six professional sports teams to operate a retail sportsbook within 400 yards of their home venue, which could pave the way for additional in-person betting locations.” (link)

Netflix has increased its offer in a second round of bids for Warner Bros. Discovery, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint, Lauren Thomas and Dave Michaels, who report: “The streamer on Monday made a primarily cash-based second offer for the entertainment and streaming assets of Warner Discovery and is working to secure tens of billions in financing to fund the purchase, people familiar with the matter said. Paramount also made an improved offer for all of Warner Discovery, including its collection of cable networks like CNN and TNT, some of the people said.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker has sent Congressional members a letter urging them to vote yes on the SCORE Act with Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich noting a vote is expected to be “called for Wednesday, but could change.” From the letter: “This week, when you vote on the SCORE Act, you have the chance to secure a sustainable and equitable future for college sports. This legislation, which is supported by student-athlete representatives and schools across all three divisions and subdivisions, including 31 Division I conferences, addresses the threats facing college sports in limited, sensible, and effective ways.” Full letter text. Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell on the upcoming SCORE Act vote: “My goals and the goals of Saving College Sports have remained very consistent: Pass legislation that will save ALL Sports! Women’s Sports, Olympic Sports, and sports at smaller and lower profile schools. Our objectives exactly mirror the objectives of [President Trump’s] Executive Order, issued this summer. While the SCORE Act comes up far short on these objectives, we support its passage in the House this week, and expect a robust debate and significant modification or replacement of the bill in the Senate. So, we urge House members to vote for the bill, so as to continue momentum, conversation, and debate, so we can find a comprehensive and effective solution that will preserve this great national treasure.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports on a newly-introduced college sports bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA) titled the “College Athletics Reform Act (CARA), which establishes a federal NIL policy, creates a bi-partisan commission for governance recs & amends [the] Sports Broadcasting Act.” In response to the news, Kennyhertz Perry LLC attorney Mit Winter writes: “This bill would kill the CSC & the House settlement. It prohibits the NCAA/CSC from restricting athletes from receiving NIL [money] and from taking adverse action against athletes because of receipt of NIL [money]. It also prevents athletes from being required to disclose NIL deals” and “allows states and athletes to sue to enjoin and enforce violations of the bill. International athletes would also be able to receive NIL [money] in the same manner as US athletes.” (link, link); Full bill text. (link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan visits with the JMU Sound Off podcast and says this on the role the Sun Belt and Commissioner Keith Gill are playing in advocating for JMU to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff: “There’s conversations and work that happen every single day. … You might not see it on social media. … I have probably, over the last four to five weeks, talked to Commissioner Gill more than I usually do. I usually have a check-in with him every so often, but we’re talking every other day. He’s letting me know what he’s hearing. I’m letting him know what I’m hearing. His staff is sharing information with us, asking us to verify. We’re sharing information with them that we think helps support our case and our resume. A lot of information is being exchanged … almost daily. … I had the unique opportunity to do the mock selection exercise early this year where I really kind of found out how that process works, right? … The analysis of who should be the top 25 teams or top 30 teams and obviously, you start to dwindle that down to what the field looks like. When they break, the liaison that’s assigned to our conference checks in with our conference and gives more behind the scenes, more intel than what the general public gets. That’s a lot of the reason Keith and I are talking is to prepare him for that check-in with that liaison.” More with Roan. (link)

Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich outlines the Hurricanes’ case for College Football Playoff inclusion, writing: “Eight of our 10 wins have been by 17 or more points, and over the last four games Mario Cristobal’s squad has outscored the opposition 151-41. The offense has been clicking on all cylinders and the defense has been at its ferocious best. In short, if you’re in the eye test business the Canes have the look of a College Football Playoff team. … There are a cluster of two-loss teams (plus 11-1 BYU) that sit between eighth and 13th. The Canes have the most statistically balanced team amongst that group – ranking 12th in total defense and 29th in total offense. The Canes rank sixth in the latest Sagarin rankings, ahead of seven SEC teams with either one or two losses – Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Texas and Oklahoma. Miami has five wins over teams in Sagarin’s Top 40. Miami also ranks seventh in ESPN’s FPI’s rankings – ahead of one-loss Georgia, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and BYU — and boast five wins over FPI Top 40 teams. Only Oklahoma and Alabama have more (and the Crimson Tide lost by two touchdowns at 5-7 Florida State). … I served on the CFP committee for four years, so I know firsthand what a difficult job it is. You spend weeks ranking teams, discussing strengths and weaknesses, parsing through data points and — most importantly – watching games.” (link)

As roster costs surpass the House settlement cap, schools are structuring LLCs to support above-cap NIL deals and more tailored corporate partnerships. Clemson AD Graham Neff tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the LLC model makes that possible: “We’re able to present, commercially, Clemson athletics assets, Clemson University assets and now our student-athletes’ NIL as an opportunity.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark frames the conference’s new equity model as the future of value creation: “I always think about, ‘How do we either create IP or have a vested interest in IP that we’re a part of?’ It’s a different mindset. And if we’re going to create value, which we are, we want to share in that value. Taking an equity stake in [Players Era] affords us the opportunity to do so.” Clemson Ventures CEO Michael Drake on where the next evolution lies: “Private equity or capital, they’re already in college athletics. Learfield, Legends, they’re all backed by them. … [Private equity working] directly with an entity on campus is where it hasn’t happened yet. But for us it was like, ‘Let’s go build a company that’s envied. That’s taking in capital for a different reason than just saying, ‘Hey, give me money.’” Lots more. (link)

UCLA is reportedly hiring James Madison Football HC Bob Chesney to lead the Bruins’ program with Chesney expected to remain with the Dukes through the postseason should the team advance to the College Football Playoff. (link); UCLA will pay JMU $1.25M for Chesney’s buyout. (link)

New LSU Football HC Lane Kiffin has inked a seven-year, $91M deal, bringing his annual salary – supplemental pay included – to $13M annually. Through the contract, Kiffin will become the second-highest paid college football coach, trailing only Georgia’s Kirby Smart, who led the nation this season with a $13.28M salary. If he successfully leads the Bayou Bengals to a national title, Kiffin’s agreement with the school includes an automatic escalator that would make him the highest-paid coach in the country. Per The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, “If LSU fires Kiffin without cause, it would owe him 80% of his remaining salary, which would be paid out in monthly installments through 2032. The deal does not include any mitigation or offset clauses that would reduce the cost if Kiffin got another job, fully guaranteeing his compensation. LSU would not have to pay him if he was fired for cause. LSU has also prepared to commit $25-30M annually for Kiffin’s roster through revenue sharing and [NIL] funds.” Additionally, LSU has agreed to pay Kiffin’s $3M buyout for leaving Ole Miss and he can also continue to earn incentives during the Rebels postseason run with the Tigers agreeing to pay him what he “would have been entitled to receive” if he had stayed at UM during the CFP, including $150K if the Rebels play in the first round or up to $1M if they win the national title. Northeastern’s 310K-square foot arena and athletics complex project to replace the 115-year-old Matthews Arena has received a green light, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the “university and city of Boston agreed to a community benefits agreement and payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) plan that will see Northeastern, a tax-exempt, nonprofit, commit nearly $180M to the city in the coming years in PILOT payments and affordable housing development.” The cost for the new Perkins&Will-designed arena hasn’t been disclosed. UConn Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley loves college hoops and wants ESPN and FS1 to devote more airtime to the sport, per NJ.com’s Adam Zagoria. Hurley: “TNT and truTV, I love what they’re doing with college basketball. They’ve got legitimate studio shows, I think they’re doing a great job covering the sport. They’re talking to players postgame on the court and I love how they’re covering the game. We’ve just gotta market it better. It’s gotta get covered more, it’s gotta get covered better. Morning talk shows should be talking about, ‘who’s the current best team in the country?’ You can’t take 10 minutes, 15 minutes with these morning talk shows on FS1 or ESPN? You can’t take 10 minutes away from talking about the backup quarterback on the (Detroit) Lions? You don’t want to talk about college basketball and some of the great players in this amazing freshman class? Get excited about college basketball before March Madness. It’s like, the f--- best s--t.” (link)

More Media Musings… ➤ American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells SI’s Bryan Fischer league “viewership on ESPN platforms is up 20% this year. Big number.” (link) ➤ Thanksgiving Day’s Fort Myers Tip-Off match-up between Michigan State and North Carolina drew an average of 5.49M viewers, making it the “most-watched college basketball game” in FOX history. According to the network, the game peaked at 13.4M viewers from 4:30-4:45 pm ET that day. Overall, FOX said it was also a 6% increase in viewership from its Thanksgiving Day programming in 2023, which was actually a Michigan State loss to Arizona.
