The House of Representatives will not vote on the SCORE Act this week, according to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman, who reports: “GOP leadership shelved the bill today but thought they could vote on it tomorrow. But House Dem leadership was whipping against it and it ran into opposition from Republicans like Chip Roy (R-TX). It also got caught up in general dissatisfaction with the House Republican leadership. Lawmakers wondered why the House was voting on the bill and not prioritizing bills on cost of living/affordability.” (link)

In the wake of the SCORE Act postponement, U.S. Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that it's hard for people to "stomach" a bill that restricts or caps athletes' NIL compensation when coaching buyouts are "not addressed." So far this year, Dellenger notes $228M has been spent on buyouts. (link); Dellenger also notes that “Congressional staff members believe that the SCORE Act is on the shelf, at the very least for the next several days/weeks. No action expected anytime soon barring vote flips.” (link)

U.S. Congressman Michael Baumgartner (R-WA) advises that “if the Commissioner of the Big 10 would spend LESS money trying to buy votes with DC lobbyists and make MORE of an effort to STOP being a bullying jackass, then Congress could get on with passing some reasonable legislation to fix college sports.” (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips with The Charlotte Observer’s Scott Fowler. On if the ACC will have to expand again: “I don’t know. It’s a good question. I don’t think anybody’s sure. What we need to do right now, over the course of the next 4-6 years, is settle down the enterprise called college sports. We went through a new governance structure at the NCAA. We’ve gone through revenue sharing for the first time, with payment to players. We’re working in Washington, D.C., on some national legislation. … We have a lot of things right now that we have to get settled to make this a sustainable model that works well into the future. We can’t lose sight that there are 550K young people playing sports across all divisions, that have access and affordability to higher education through sport, and that we believe have life-changing experiences. And 99% of them, they’re not going professional.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor lambasted the state of college athletics for its role in driving Wildcats Football HC Chris Klieman into retirement, declaring: “You just saw one of the greatest guys in this industry walk out of this room and retire from coaching, the business that he loves. And what really pisses me off is that he’s doing it because of where we are in this industry. If we don’t get this thing under control, more really, really good guys like Chris Klieman are going to walk away from this business.” Taylor also admitted he has considered retiring but wants to be part of the solution when it comes to straightening out college sports. “I want to make sure that because of where I am on my experience, I have a chance to sit on some committees now, that I can help make some decisions as an industry that will get us in a place that we’ll be better off.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart during freshly minted Football HC Will Stein’s introductory press conference responded harshly to a question about whether Kentucky has enough NIL resources: “People have asked that question 19 different ways…and it’s exhausting. You know, enough. Enough about ‘Have we got enough?’ We’ve got enough and we’re working at it just like everybody else is working at it. … This notion that we don’t have enough is ridiculous. We’ve got enough. You resource it the right way, we’ve got to assess talent the right way, we’ve got to acquire it the right way and we’ve got to make sure we’re within the boundaries of the rules. We’re not going to break the rules. That’s flat-out we’re not doing that. We will do it the right way. We don’t need to do that. We’re good enough at what we do, we’ve got good people. That’s why we hired this guy (Stein). He’s really smart. … That notion, all this nonsense that’s been created in a variety of places that we don’t have enough or we’re not working at it has got to stop. It’s enough.” (link)

In the modern history of college athletics, the NCAA Market has been the industry jobs board leader. Until now. Thus far in 2025, more Division I administrative & coaching jobs have been posted to D1.ticker’s CollegeSports.jobs than to the NCAA Market. Posting to CollegeSpots.jobs is not only cheaper than the NCAA Market, it also provides far greater exposure for your openings. Why wait for someone to stumble upon your job on the NCAA Market as opposed to D1.ticker getting your openings directly into the inboxes of potential candidates? Plus, schools have purchased more than 365 unlimited bundles with CollegeSports.jobs, leading to average annual savings of more than $2,200. (link)

The Toledo Blade’s David Briggs chronicles how Toledo volleyball has gone from an afterthought with just two banners in Savage Arena to a breakout MAC champion and NCAA Tournament qualifier after a deliberate investment push from Rockets AD Bryan Blair and first-year HC Brian Wright. Blair, who made volleyball one of four UT sports included in revenue sharing alongside football and men’s and women’s basketball, saw the national boom in the sport and asked: “What if we go all in on this?” That bet helped Toledo lead the MAC in attendance at 1,357 fans per match, trail only Ohio State in in-state crowds, and pack Savage Arena and Bowling Green’s Stroh Center during key wins. Wright, who came from Ohio State determined to “watch a city become a volleyball city,” has paired on-court success (23-10, MAC tournament title) with aggressive community engagement, turning players into door-to-door ambassadors and turning Savage into a legitimate volleyball hotbed. ESPN’s Dan Wetzel argues the real victims of the chaotic college football calendar aren’t coaches juggling jobs, playoff prep and portal timelines, but high school recruits forced into rushed, ill-informed decisions created by the early signing period. With signing day now the first week of December, coaching changes and rumors throw entire classes into turmoil just days before letters are due, leaving families scrambling with little information and even less time. Moreover, Wetzel notes coaches themselves pushed for the early signing period to secure classes and encourage early enrollment, yet those same coaches now decry the calendar because it complicates their “job-hopping” and roster building. The compressed December recruiting window forces many recruits to sign without knowing their head coach, position coach, or scheme, only to be immediately recruited over when the transfer portal opens in January, thereby fueling the very retention crisis coaches complain about. Moving signing day back to February, Wetzel writes, would give recruits and staffs full visibility after the carousel and portal settle. Until then, “high school kids don’t have multimillion-dollar buyouts to fall back on.” (link)

Stanford has launched its Hyperion campaign as the Cardinal seek a 50th consecutive season with at least one team national championship. From the website: “For 49 straight years, we've hoisted at least one NCAA trophy. And now...history waits for year 50. A golden milestone. A half-century of dominance. A half-century of proving that the Tree can weather any storm. A testament of the strength of our roots, the breadth of our limbs. And the endless horizon of our ambition. Trademark licensing also continued its climb with FY25 royalties up 39% compared to a 7% league average. (link)

A full House vote on the SCORE Act has been postponed. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “Several college sports leaders - including the A4 commissioners - are in Washington D.C. for today's scheduled vote. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is leading a multi-state effort against the College Sports Commission's participation agreement ahead of today’s deadline, urging schools not to sign the document, which requires them to waive their right to sue over enforcement decisions. A press release from Skrmetti’s office reads, in part: “Under the proposed Agreement, the CSC could strip schools of all conference revenue and impose postseason bans if any state, state official, student-athlete, or other third party brings litigation ‘related in any way’ to the CSC rules, investigations, or enforcement decisions – even if the CSC is ultimately found to have violated the law. A university could face financial and competitive devastation simply because a student-athlete exercised their legal rights or because a state attorney general investigates illegal conduct. The Agreement also forces institutions to waive rights to a jury trial and accept mandatory arbitration, which many public universities cannot legally do.” Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “This deadline will not be met as several schools have not signed. All 68 A4 schools must sign for it to be enforceable. Officials are now working toward modifications to the agreement.” (link, link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips sat down for a wide-ranging Q&A with The Charlotte Observer’s Scott Fowler and touched on the potential “Duke Doomsday Scenario” that could see the 7-5 Blue Devils upset Virginia for the conference crown while potentially leaving the league completely outside the College Football Playoff: “Whoever wins is in the CFP. To me, it’s very clear. First of all, we’ve had a very good football season. Virginia earned the right to be here. They’re 7-1. They’re 10-2 overall. They’ve had a great year. We ended up having five teams go 6-2, and those are all very good teams. … At the end of the day, it was the seventh point of the tiebreaker that meant Duke had earned their way into the game. … Virginia (with a win) will be a top-15 team and an automatic qualifier. … Duke (with a win) will have won seven P4 games. I think the teams that people are looking at right now could have zero wins against Power 4 teams. The strength of schedule, which is really important — I think it’s separated by 75 places in a 136-team comparison. They (Duke, with a victory) should get an opportunity to play in the CFP. They would be our ACC champion. … [Miami’s] 10-2. They have four wins against top 25 teams… They should be in as an at-large bid.” (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter appeared on the Mornings with Richard Cross podcast to touch on a number of topics, including the chaos surrounding Lane Kiffin’s recent departure. On the process of Kiffin’s exit and his decision to hire Pete Golding as HC: “The week of the Egg Bowl, Coach Kiffin is our coach. … We had talked and said ‘we have to have an answer on the Saturday after the Egg Bowl.’ I think that decision in hindsight was a good one. We played great. … That Saturday we get back and I’m up at the office pretty much all day. Ultimately, the meeting doesn’t happen until around 6 p.m. and I’m informed, officially, that Coach Kiffin is going to LSU. Pete Golding was a guy that was always in the mix with us. … We called Pete in and said ‘hey, we want you to be not only our guy in the short term to help us solidify this, but also we think you’re the guy that can keep Ole Miss football at a super-high level and even maybe take it to the next level. You talk about the void of information. Saturday was one of those days. For me, it was a long day. We ended up staying in the office until about 3 a.m. that night and trying to get some things done. It was one of those deals that as soon as Coach Kiffin told us that he was moving on, we had a great plan in place. I feel like it was implemented well on Sunday, and Pete’s just done a fantastic job really in the last three days of bringing that building together and putting the staff back together. Obviously, the players are super fired up.” More from Carter. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports Cal’s athletic spending is set to surge past $35M following GM Ron Rivera’s decision to part ways with Football HC Justin Wilcox with two years remaining on his deal. The transition will be underwritten by an unusually large influx of cash from across the University of California system that has not been widely disclosed until now. In addition to the previously announced $30M in “Calimony” payments from UCLA over three years, Cal will receive another $45M in bridge financing directly from the UC Office of the President, bringing total support to $75M over three years. Wilner explains the $45M in discretionary UCOP funds was approved in June 2025 by President Michael Drake without requiring UC regents’ approval, though regents were notified. The funds are not a loan and do not need to be repaid. UCOP described the transfer as support “during times of growth and transition.” Wilner points out the financial support arrives as Cal navigates significant headwinds, including a 2023-24 athletic deficit of $29M, partial ACC revenue shares for most of the next decade, rising travel and revenue-sharing costs, and the need to pay Wilcox’s $11M buyout. Cal will also likely spend at least $20M on a new contract for Oregon DC Tosh Lupoi, the leading candidate to replace Wilcox, plus another $5M on staff changes. Wilner traces the entire $75M package back to the realignment crisis that pushed Cal and Stanford into the ACC and spurred regents to require UCLA to subsidize Berkeley after its Big Ten move. More. ESPN’s Eli Lederman examines how USC managed to secure the top 2026 football recruiting class, noting the “incoming class will cost them north of $9M, tied heavily to a string of front-loaded NIL contracts that powered a surge of 21 commitments from Feb. 1 to May 30 before the House settlement took effect in July.” A key part of the process was Football HC Lincoln Riley and AD Jen Cohen honing “in on a brash, intensely energetic 30-year-old with front office pedigree and a grasp of the sport's evolving landscape: Notre Dame's Chad Bowden.” Riley: “We probably talked more about that [search] than any other single topic in the years that we've been here together. We both knew how important it was to find the right fit and to equip that person with a great staff. Our patience has been rewarded.” Lederman: “USC lured Bowden away on a multiyear deal worth upward of $1M annually.” More. (link)
