Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard’s emotional response to Matt Campbell’s move to Penn State: “I get it. I’ve done this long enough. These jobs are hard and we make sacrifices that fans will never understand. We do. He’s had an amazing run as our football coach and didn’t get to do it in front of his family and friends. He had other times he could have left and chose not to. Matt Campbell owes Iowa State nothing because he did more than we could have ever, ever dreamed he would do as our head coach. So, yea, a page turns, but none of us are here forever. Life goes on. That’s how I viewed it. I’ve been here 21 years, it’s not the first time we’ve gone through something like this and the sun will come up on the east like it does every morning and I’m excited about where we’re going.” (link)

Pollard moved quickly to replace Campbell, turning to Washington State HC Jimmy Rogers. (link)

Campbell’s deal at Penn State is an eight-year agreement at roughly $10M per season. Reports also have the Nittany Lions promising $17M for staff construction & another $30M for NIL. (link, link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan implored JMU students to stop throwing snowballs at Troy student-athletes during last night’s Sun Belt Championship game. Roan’s plea came after officials warned the crowd that further misbehavior would result in penalties against the home team. The snowballs stopped & the Dukes went on to win 31-14. “An absolute money machine.” That’s how former Ohio State AD Andy Geiger describes what the Big Ten has become, per The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman and Laine Higgins. Michigan AD Warde Manuel: “There’s no longer this, ‘No, the Big Ten doesn’t do that—that’s not us. I don’t want to insinuate that we’ve lost our values. The Big Ten has had to adjust to the overall shift in college athletics and the marketplace around it.” Bachman and Higgins: “Even as it keeps printing money, the Big Ten has run into something of an identity crisis as the country’s richest conference. Years after the Big Ten famously resisted forming a national-title game, the College Football Playoff is now worth $1.3B a year in TV rights. Still, the conference is leading efforts to double the field to 24 teams. And this season, a civil war broke out as the conference weighed a $2.4B private investment that would pay each school at least $100M up front in exchange for 10% of future media revenue.” Geiger: “There’s a narrow line between providing leadership and selling your soul.” More. “You’re the cookie man with cookie money.” That’s The Athletic’s Christopher Kamrani informing Crumbl CEO Jason McGowan of his new nickname from the “online corner of the college football cosmos … crediting him entirely with altering the trajectory of one of the most will-he-won’t-he chapters of this dizzying coaching carousel cycle” by helping BYU retain Football HC Kalani Sitake. To McGowan’s credit, per Kamrani, “McGowan shut down the assumptions percolating online that it was only his fiscal infusions as a BYU booster that helped keep Sitake in royal Cougar blue.” McGowan: “I don’t want to comment for anyone else or take the spotlight away with specific numbers, but [he and several big donors] were all willing to be substantial in our help for BYU. Very substantial. … When I reached out to Kalani, the feedback from him was, ‘I just want to take care of my players. I want to take care of my coaches and the staff.’ That’s what he cared about. Not once was there a conversation of, ‘Jason, how can you help me?’” More. (link)

San Diego State’s Campus Fee Advisory Committee has tabled a vote on a potential increase to student fees that would buoy the Aztecs’ budget to the tune of an additional $9.7M annually. A student vote on the matter was expected, but now the university will conduct a series of forums on the issue to fully vet the potential fee hike. Of particular note, the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler outlines an alternative proposal that would reduce the athletic department’s take to $4.3M per year. Timeline wise, per Zeigler, “The committee is scheduled to reconvene next Friday, possibly by Zoom, with the expectation that it will vote on a recommendation to (President Adela) de la Torre.” (link)

In other lawsuit news… The federal trial began this week in Phoenix for a six-year-old retaliation case centering on three women associated with Arizona State being sexually harassed at the 2019 Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament by an ASU donor. Former Senior Assoc. AD Dave Cohen claims he reported the harassment of his wife, Men’s Basketball HC Bobby Hurley's wife, and the wife of one of Hurley's assistant coaches to then-Sun Devils’ AD Ray Anderson. However, Cohen claims his boss did nothing and continued to court the donor for financial contributions. ASU president Michael Crow was the first witness to testify, praising Cohen’s competence within the athletics department but said he could not recall many details surrounding Cohen’s final months at ASU — including why Cohen received a $100K performance bonus just 41 days before he was fired. PICTOR Group President Sandy Hatfield Clubb and Anderson also took the stand, with Anderson acknowledging it was a mistake not to report the donor’s alleged misconduct to the proper university officials. In court records and testimony on Friday, ASU claims Cohen was fired because he objected to a staff reorganization, was difficult to work with, and had ethical lapses. The trial resumes next week, with Hurley expected to testify on Wednesday. (link)

Friday’s CRO.ticker unpacks snack foods conglomerate Mondelēz’s $40M investment in AIDA, a proprietary generative-AI platform designed to dramatically increase content output and personalize advertising, mounting criticism of FIFA’s dynamic pricing structure, what Bending Spoons’ $500M cash acquisition of Eventbrite – a company that went public in 2018 at a $1.7B valuation – says about Wall Street’s attitude toward ticket companies, and lots more. Also this from Austin FC Director of Business Insights and Analytics Nick Makarov on making analytics accessible throughout the organization: “There is a temptation for non-technical folks to believe whatever the numbers nerds say. I try to humanize the data a little bit. If a particular dataset was extra tricky, I call that out at the onset so it is not apples-to-apples. Even just letting people know that I struggled with the analysis is a good level-setting exercise.” Check it out. (link)

The University of Nebraska System Board of Regents has approved the next phase of the Omaha’s Athletics Campus Masterplan, which includes a state-of-the-art Omaha Athletics Training Facility and a new Omaha Athletics Baseball and Softball Clubhouse. Central Arkansas’ Board of Trustees met yesterday, during which time “WER Architects shared findings from the multipurpose arena feasibility study, which outlined a plan to replace the 53-year-old Farris Center with a new 116,000 square feet multipurpose arena, based on conceptual design.” More from the release: “Serving as the future home of UCA men’s and women’s basketball, the proposed arena will provide game seating for 2,650, a full practice gym and basketball operations space, as well as the ability to host other large events such as commencement ceremonies (3,000 seats), concerts (3,600 seats) and special events (up to 1,200 seats). With its proposed location just north of Estes Stadium on Bruce Street, the arena will close in the north end zone for football and include football locker rooms and operations space for Bears Football. With the feasibility study completed, WER Architects, in conjunction with associate architect HKS, will begin the design phase of the arena. Once approved by the board, construction could begin in FY 2027.” Renderings included. (link)

Michigan State receives a $401M commitment from Acrisure CEO Greg Williams and wife Dawn that includes a $301M gift, representing the largest private donation in MSU history and one of the biggest single amounts in collegiate athletics history. Per The Detroit News’ Tony Paul and Connor Eargood, $290M is specifically earmarked for the athletic department with another $100M serving as an investment “in the coming-soon Spartan Ventures initiative, which, among other interests, aims to significantly boost NIL offers for student-athletes. The $290M donation … was the big seed that was used to launch Michigan State's FOR SPARTA campaign, which was announced earlier this week, and has set an ambitious goal of raising $1B from donors, with plans to use that money to significantly upgrade the university's athletic arenas, including Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center.” Paul and Eargood: “[AD J] Batt and Williams told The News there are no set naming rights associated with the gift, and Batt said the gift isn't being used to pay the $30M-plus buyout for fired head football coach Jonathan Smith. That money, Batt said, is coming from other athletic department resources, including other donors.” More. (link, link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould visits with John Canzano to discuss a number of topics. On the new media rights package with The CW, CBS, and USA Network: “When we went into this process, first of all, the media rights sales process was somewhat unprecedented because we were going into it without incumbent packages, without incumbent partners. So, we really got to start over and make it what we wanted it to be. We absolutely valued and prioritized exposure for sure. We are launching a new league and exposure and reach and being able to allow our fans all over the country to easily access our live events was critically important. But we were also looking for partners that had the same vision that we had in terms of telling student-athlete stories and amplifying the Pac-12 brand. So, we're thrilled with where we landed and the partners that we have, and I think our fans are excited too about the exposure and having 100% of our football games on linear television, three-fourths of our men's basketball games on linear television. I think we're positioned right where we want to be as we launch this new league.” Lots more from Gould. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua joined The Pat McAfee Show to discuss the potential for reaching a consensus on the CFP path moving forward: “I have the privilege of being in that room due to my role here at Notre Dame. I think there’s almost unanimity in that room that we should be at 16 teams with five automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large. I think if we were at 16 teams right now, I think it would be perfect. … These conversations are great. They're interesting. … I hope we get there sooner than later. … I think corrections can be made but as it relates to the CFP, I think 16 teams is the answer. I don’t want to speak on anybody’s behalf, but being in that room, I think there’s overwhelming momentum to try to get that done.” More from Bevacqua. (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek visited with The Chuck & Bo Show to chat about the investment the University is making from the top down into the football program: “The investment that we have committed to make, and it’s from the University, from the system, the Board and the top down, is gonna put us in a position where we can compete to win SEC and national championships just like our men’s basketball program’s positioned, just like our baseball program, softball, gymnastics, soccer, etc. Look, you’re positioned to win a national championship doesn't mean you’re gonna win a national championship, but it gives you an opportunity year-in and year-out to have a program on that football field that we are all proud of, that will pack Razorback Stadium and is something moving forward that is gonna make football just like men’s basketball and baseball and softball and all those programs that we are so proud of. I’m the Director of Athletics, I have 450 student-athletes among 19 sports and I want every single one of them to have an opportunity to have success and win a championship. With that said, I understand how important the success of our football program is to the health of our department of athletics, to the health of our University and to everyone across this state. We’re going to get it right with [Football HC] Ryan Silverfield.” (link)

“We’re building the plane while it’s flying.” That’s Cal Co-AD Jay Larson’s recent comment while reflecting on collegiate sports turbulence, per the San Francisco Chronicle’s Marisa Imgemi, who observes Cal and Stanford “are feeling the ground move beneath them as college sports shift toward a more professionalized model.” Cal Co-AD Jenny Simon-O’Neill: “There isn’t a perfect playbook for navigating the challenges that exist now. We can take some pieces from the professional model. Having a legal background and business background and applying some of those principles helps, but we are a little more writing the playbook as we go, instead of referencing something to help make decisions. … I was at one fundraising event (in November) and Jay was at another fundraising event at the same time. It’s like having 48 hours in a day, and you need that now.” Larson: “We are meeting with lawyers, inside counsel, outside counsel, and senators’ staff, because we’re pushing for federal legislation, private equity. Those last three parts would have been almost unheard of a decade or so ago. And that’s just become just part of another day in the life of an AD these days.” (link)

“SEC presidents voted to increase the number of maximum scholarships available to football rosters from 85 to 105,” per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes despite being allowed to increase numbers to 105 as part of the House settlement, the SEC chose last year to remain at 85. (link)

ESPN’s Dan Murphy reports Georgia is taking former football student-athlete Damon Wilson to court in a potentially precedent-setting attempt to enforce a $390K liquidated-damages clause tied to an NIL contract. Wilson, now Missouri’s top pass rusher, left UGA in January – two weeks after signing a 14-month, $500K deal with the Classic City Collective. Georgia says Wilson received one $30K payment before transferring and, per the deal’s early-exit clause, owes the remaining value of the contract in a lump sum. UGA filed suit to compel Wilson into binding arbitration, marking one of the first public efforts to enforce an NIL buyout-style clause. Bulldogs Deputy AD/CMO Steven Drummond: “When the University of Georgia Athletic Association enters binding agreements with student-athletes, we honor our commitments and expect student-athletes to do the same.” Legal experts tell Murphy UGA will have to convince an arbitrator that the $390K in damages are a reasonable assessment of the harm the athletic department suffered due to Wilson's departure. Murphy also notes liquidated damages are not legally allowed to be used as punishment or primarily as an incentive to keep someone from breaking a contract. Wilson has not commented. (link)

The Big 12 announces a new strategic partnership with the NFL that’s designed to strengthen the entire football ecosystem by working side-by-side on officiating development, global football initiatives, emerging technology, analytics and flag football expansion. From joint appearances at international identification camps to shared testing of player-tracking technology and performance systems, both organizations will work to push the game forward through data-driven insight and hands-on collaboration. One of the areas of focus is officiating with the NFL and the league expanding opportunities for joint training and evaluation programs. Officials from the conference will gain access to NFL clinics, weekly teaching tapes, and advanced accountability tools, while both organizations will collaborate to identify officials with the potential to advance into professional football. The two organizations will also join forces to help grow flag football across Big 12 campuses, connecting collegiate programs with NFL Flag resources, coaching tools, and player appearances. (link)

Arizona will likely realize nearly $600K by playing all 11 of this season’s women’s basketball non-conference contests at McKale Center, rather than a typical slate consisting of three or four non-conference road tilts, according to the Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen, who notes “that $600K will offset the first-year salary of HC Becky Burke.” The extra four home games should generate approximately $400K, while the school would also save nearly $200K in expenses by not going on the road for those match-ups. Hansen: “Once Burke gets her program rolling, it is sure to go back on the road for a marquee game or two in November and December, but in the rebuilding process, saving $600K is a good start.” (link)

The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has vacated a district court injunction ordering Stephen F. Austin to reinstate women’s bowling, women’s golf and beach volleyball while a Title IX lawsuit was resolved, per KTRE’s Jeff Awtrey, who notes the case will now be sent back to the district court for further proceedings. According to the ruling, the court said the injunction didn’t provide enough detail. “By requiring SFA simply to ‘preserve’ the three women’s teams at issue, without further elaboration, the injunction does not inform SFA in reasonable detail what it must do. For instance, the women’s bowling team was discontinued months ago. To comply with the mandatory injunction, must SFA hire a new coach, and if so, by what date? Must it enter the same number of competitions as last year and roster the same number of bowlers, assuming either is possible at this point? Must it recruit new members, maintain scholarships, and keep funding at current levels?” Awtrey: “According to a previous KTRE report, SFA said it has committed to hiring coaches for women’s golf and beach volleyball and SFA will move forward with those teams and prepare for competition in the spring. But a stay on the injunction allowed SFA to hold off on reinstating women’s bowling.” (link)
