Athletes.org has published its first collective bargaining agreement framework that outlines clear terms between student-athletes and a governing body, comparisons to pro sports and the benefits for all parties. The four-year proposal would include a revenue share template agreement, “school-specific revenue-sharing percentage based on pro rata revenue per sport,” a five-year max on eligibility, a removal of third-part NIL limitations and more. Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “We are facing a pivotal moment and must embrace the inevitable change. In order to do that successfully, we need to have all parties at the table to forge a path to a future with clear enforceable rules, alignment with our educational academy and a durable framework that appropriately shares both the investment and growth of our entire enterprise in a stable and sustainable way. Undoubtedly, it’s a complicated road to travel and new ideas will always oblige scrutiny and criticism. We can’t let that deter us. Athletes.org’s CBA draft may not be perfect today, but it’s one of the first concrete blueprints I’ve seen which integrates the athlete’s side of this paradigm shift. It includes the student-athlete’s very necessary perspective around their rights and realities but it also identifies pathways for a wider athlete ecosystem of general participation and Olympic hopefuls. There’s more work to do but efforts like this move the conversation from abstract talking points to workable solutions.” More from Syracuse Chancellor/President Kent Syverud, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Tennessee AD Danny White, Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey and more. Baylor officially announces the hiring of Field & Stream President Doug McNamee as the Bears’ new AD. BU President Linda Livingstone: “Doug's familiarity with Baylor and his recent experience as the chief executive of two national lifestyle and media companies will serve him well as we prioritize increasing revenues, expanding external NIL opportunities for our student-athletes and growing our brand in this new era of college athletics while also engaging our passionate fanbase.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, while appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, remarked on the Fighting Irish’s relationship with the ACC after missing out on a berth in the CFP: “We have no gripes about any of the schools in the ACC. But, we were mystified by the actions of the conference to attack their biggest, really, business partner in football and a member of their conference in 24 of our other sports. … I wouldn’t be honest … if I didn’t say they have certainly done permanent damage to the relationship between the conference and Notre Dame. … We didn’t appreciate the fact that we were singled out repeatedly and compared to Miami. … Miami has every right to do that, but it raised a lot of eyebrows here that the conference was taking shots at us and you know, that’s just not something that we chose to do. We wouldn’t choose to do that in the future and people might disagree with us, but that’s just not something that we’d be comfortable with. … I would just say [Notre Dame’s relationship with the ACC] has been strained.” (link)
|
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips via a statement: "The University of Notre Dame is an incredibly valued member of the ACC and there is tremendous respect and appreciation for the entire institution. With that said, when it comes to football, we have a responsibility to support and advocate for all 17 of our football-playing member institutions, and I stand behind our conference efforts to do just that leading up to the College Football Playoff Committee selections on Sunday. At no time was it suggested by the ACC that Notre Dame was not a worthy candidate for inclusion in the field. We are thrilled for the University of Miami while also understanding and appreciating the significant disappointment of the Notre Dame players, coaches and program.” (link)

U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have introduced the Helping Undergraduate Students Thrive with Long-Term Earnings (HUSTLE) Act, per Fox News’ Ryan Gaydos, who notes via the legislation, college athletes would get the opportunity to put up to $35K in unused NIL account funds into “tax-advantaged investment accounts for student athletes, require trustees to provide financial education, and establish regulations to prevent abuse.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who endorsed the act, remarks: “The HUSTLE Act represents a constructive approach by establishing tax-advantaged NIL investment accounts that encourage financial education, long-term savings, and responsible management of earnings. We appreciate Congress’s sustained bipartisan commitment to developing national, consistent standards that support student-athletes and enhance their opportunities in this rapidly changing environment." Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard breaks down the current NIL situation in Ames. Here are Pollard’s key remarks to the media today…
➤ “We allocated the $20M. Football got $13M, men’s basketball got $5M, wrestling got $1M and women’s basketball got $750K. Every one of those coaches wants more money, but somebody’s got to make the decision of what you’re gonna get. Would [Men’s Basketball HC] T.J. [Otzelberger] want more money, does his team need more money? Yes. We can’t give him anymore rev share because we’re at the cap. As an institution, I don’t know how we’re funding it.”
➤ “We’ve gotta continue to work really hard to try to figure out how Iowa State can exist above the cap, but that’s not something we get to do. The NCAA took it away. You can’t go to donors anymore. You can’t put it in a collective anymore. All you can do is business-to-business. So, we’ve gotta find sponsors that are willing to do that. At the same time, our total sponsorship sales are $12M and we need that $12M just to be able to do what we’re currently doing and we just added $20M more of expenses, right? The realistic thought that there’s this huge amount of money out there that’s over and above the cap that’s legal, it’s gonna take a lot of work. You can’t snap your fingers and make that happen. When you hear these numbers over the cap, no one can put that in writing.”
➤ “Did anybody read what happened in Colorado last week? They cut 25 staff members. They took away ops people from [Football HC] Deion [Sanders], all because they wrote checks they couldn’t cash and now they’re in debt $50M overnight. It’s a bloodbath, and that’s not going to happen at Iowa State. The leadership of this institution, the leadership of this state, that’s not how you do it in the Midwest. So, we’ve got to figure it out … but it’s not easy. The thought that, some have said, I’ve controlled what the coaches spend. … I haven’t been involved at all and anybody that’s perpetuating that that’s happening is doing a huge disservice to Iowa State and to our coaches and our student-athletes, cause it’s only gonna make this harder. … Don’t create problems where there aren’t problems.”

New Penn State Football HC Matt Campbell’s eight-year, $70.5M guaranteed contract starts with a 2026 base salary plus supplemental compensation of $8M before seeing $250K bumps in years two and three, followed by a $500K raise in year four, before his total comp grows to $9.25M in 2031. Campbell will also reap a $1M retention bonus per contract year, receive an automatic one-year extension for making the College Football Playoff with a compensation increase of no less than an additional $500K and an automatic two-year extension for winning a national title with a compensation increase of no less than an additional $1M. If PSU terminates Campbell, it will pay him 100% of the guaranteed compensation for the remainder of the employment agreement subject to mitigation. Penn State will also pay Iowa State $2M as part of an anticipated buyout. More. (link)

UNLV isn’t waiting on the NCAA to approve jersey patches as part of schools’ uniforms next season as the Rebels, through Learfield’s UNLV Sports Properties, have inked a five-year, $11M partnership to name Acesso Biologics as the Official Jersey Patch Partner for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball; south field goal net sponsor and also become the first official multi-sport corporate jersey patch and on-field logo partner in the NCAA. AD Erick Harper: “There’s always a concern that something doesn’t go through, but I think we have to think more positively and think that this is something that the NCAA and the voting parties will determine that this is best for our student athletes, not to make it look like a billboard on their jerseys.” The corporate jersey patch rule proposal is expected to be voted on by the NCAA membership in January 2026, and if passed, would take effect on August 1, 2026. LSU football season-ticket prices won’t be going up after all in 2026, per Nola.com’s Jason Willis, who notes the Board of Supervisors and Tigers’ athletic department recently announced a reversal of October’s price hike that would have pocketed the school more than $4.5M in additional revenue from specific sections “with high renewal rates and high secondary market values.” (link)

Arkansas AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Hunter Yurachek said Miami (FL)’s head-to-head victory over Notre Dame wasn't a deciding factor until the Hurricanes jumped BYU in the rankings and were evaluated side-by-side with the Fighting Irish. "Once we moved Miami ahead of BYU, then we had that side-by-side comparison that everybody had been hungering for.” Yurachek added that he encouraged committee members to go back and watch the Notre Dame-Miami game from Labor Day weekend as the committee debated the two teams into Sunday morning. "You look at those two teams on paper, and they are almost equal in their schedule strength, their common opponents, the results against common opponents. But the one metric we had to fall back on, again, was the head to head." (link)
|
Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua was frank in his disappointment when he described the Fighting Irish’s “overwhelming shock and sadness. Like a collective feeling that we were all just punched in the stomach.” He added that the weekly ranking shows are a “farce” that give false hope to fans and teams: “There is no explanation that could possibly be given to explain the outcome. As I said to [Football HC] Marcus [Freeman], one thing is for sure: Any rankings or show prior to this last one is an absolute joke and a waste of time. Why put these young student-athletes through these false emotions just to pull the rug out from underneath them having not played a game in two weeks and then a group of people in a room shatter their dreams without explanation? We feel like the playoff was stolen from our student-athletes.” Notre Dame, like other teams, had a chance to present its case to the committee each week over the past six weeks and Bevacqua explains: “The feedback we got in the last presentation Thursday was that it was the best presentation that they’ve received in the two years of the expanded playoff.” (link)
|
Notre Dame subsequently released a statement indicating that "as a team, we've decided to withdraw our name from consideration for a bowl game following the 2025 season.” (link)
|
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes that “many stakeholders across college sports – perhaps even some in the CFP selection committee room – have expressed public and private belief that the Irish should join a league.” Bevacqua quickly shot that down: “We love being independent in football. It’s part of our DNA. We have zero intention of changing that. It’s part of who Notre Dame is. Quite frankly, this further cements our independence. We are out there fighting for ourselves. That’s something we accept.” (link)
|
Dellenger also reports this “newsy wrinkle from Bevacqua: As part of an MOU signed last spring, Notre Dame is assured of a CFP berth if it is ranked in the top 12 starting next year. If this year’s situation unfolds next year, the final at-large team (Miami (FL)) would have gotten bumped for No. 11 Notre Dame. If the playoff is expanded to 14 teams and there are more at-large berths added to the field (from seven to nine), Notre Dame is guaranteed a CFP berth if it is ranked No. 13 or better, according to the MOU, per Bevacqua. The signed MOU only covers 12 or 14-team playoffs.” (link)
|
Dellenger also shares a look at how a 24-team CFP field would look based on this year's rankings and conference standings “using the Big Ten's proposed format of 4 AQs for each power conference + 2 G5 AQs + 6 at-large. Conference title games would likely be eliminated. First two rounds at better seed.” (link)

Iowa State and Kansas State are two of a handful of football programs across the nation opting out of bowl participation and have each been fined $500K by the Big 12. A statement from the league explains: "While the conference acknowledges the difficult timing around coaching changes, the Big 12 is responsible for fulfilling its contractual obligations to its bowl partners.” Wildcats AD Gene Taylor says he had conversations with players and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark before deciding to decline a bowl bid. "This decision was not taken lightly, but with our coaching staff transition and several uncertainties regarding player availability, I felt it was not in our best interest to try to field a team that was not representative of Kansas State University.” (link)

Michigan State AD J Batt tells The Detroit News’ Connor Earegood that MSU is “certainly in business” for naming rights with its athletics properties, including Spartan Stadium. The news comes after the Spartans last week received a $290M donation from Greg and Dawn Williams to support the FOR SPARTA fund, but Batt says there are no indications the gift will impact the naming of Spartan Stadium. “We’re certainly going to recognize Greg and Dawn around this gift in the appropriate way. But…naming rights for different parts of the athletic department, we are certainly in business around those opportunities going forward.” Ultimately, Batt explains: “All of our facilities, whether it's Spartan Stadium or others, are truly revered buildings on our campus. And so choosing the right partners, the right opportunities, the right ways in which to evaluate those opportunities is really important.” (link)

Appearing on Higher Ed Athletics, Central Michigan AD Amy Folan on the topic of donor fatigue, remarks: “I think donor fatigue is really a thing, and I will tell you when I started at Texas, … I went around to the top-10 donors and I said, ’okay, tell me what we need to stop, start and continue,’ and a lot of them said ‘hey, you keep coming back to me and I don't see the person behind me.’ The average age was 82 … and they just said … ‘I need to know that it's going to continue and it's not just me,’ so I think that can happen everywhere. … They know what they're doing and their impact and how they're doing it, and it's our responsibility to make sure that their money is advancing, that it's making an impact and that we're doing what we said. So, I think people, when they're inspired and they have that money, they can go ahead and spend philanthropically and make an impact. I think that's at $100 or it's at a $100M gift, it’s the same. … They need to know that the trust, what you say and what you do is going to happen. They need to know that they're giving this money to make this thing happen because that's their passion and where they want their impact to be.” More. (link)

Houston’s home-away-from-home matchup with Florida State at the Toyota Center reflects the financial pressures reshaping high-major scheduling in the NIL and revenue-sharing era, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte. Cougars HC Kelvin Sampson acknowledges that “NIL controls so much of your non-conference scheduling, and it’s unfortunate because we have to raise so much of our own money that we are looking for ways to make money with the schedule. You don’t have to like it, but it is what it is. If we’re not getting ‘X’ amount of dollars there’s no sense in doing it.” Sampson adds: “We’re constantly looking for ways to enhance our budget and fundraising we do. I don’t like always asking other people to help us. Sometimes you’ve got to do what you need to do to raise the money. Just like everybody else, it’s uncomfortable to talk about it but you have to be at a certain level dollars-wise… Would I go to Vegas without a million dollars? Once in a while. I wouldn’t do it every year, that’s for sure.” (link)

The Rose Bowl Operating Co. and the city of Pasadena have amended their lawsuit to add Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and SoFi Stadium as defendants as part of the plaintiffs’ bid to keep the UCLA football team as a tenant at the Rose Bowl. The Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch reports the plaintiffs allege the parties attempted to induce UCLA to abandon its lease and move football games to SoFi as early as 2026. The filing also claims Kroenke executives suggested SoFi was pursuing UCLA despite knowing the school’s contractual obligations, and that SoFi officials “coordinated with UCLA to breach its contractual obligations,” causing what plaintiffs describe as irreparable harm and potential damages exceeding $1B. The amended complaint seeks to compel UCLA to play all home games at the Rose Bowl for the duration of the lease while barring Kroenke and SoFi from further interference, and also cites donor withdrawal, sponsor hesitancy, and stadium-funded upgrades – including a $28.5M field-level club – that were advanced after UCLA assured operators it would remain long-term. A hearing is scheduled next month on UCLA’s motion to compel arbitration, which plaintiffs oppose on grounds of public interest. (link)
