Baylor held an introductory press conference for new AD Doug McNamee, who remarked: “When I left Baylor seven years ago, I’d say the objective for my professional journey was always to get this job. The objective for me today isn’t to get this job. The objective is to be successful and to deliver the athletic department that the President and the Board of Regents have asked us to deliver, and I will give every ounce of energy to do so.” McNamee went on to say that “it wasn’t my job, but [college athletics] has remained my passion; I certainly monitored it closely, but the revenue component of college athletics has really been amplified over the last seven years. The last seven years have prepared me to tackle that well. There’s a lot of change, and it’s difficult to keep up with all the things that are happening, all the legislation and different conversations. I’ve been reading frequently, but I will tell you, as a department and university, we will be nimble. We’ll be ready. We’ll be at the forefront to adjust to whatever is necessary and put our university in the best possible position to be successful.” (link); Full presser. (link)

Sacramento State President Luke Wood aired ambitions to elevate the Hornets into a California “flagship” by growing enrollment past 31K, raising graduation rates and expanding academic and cultural programs while tapping athletics as a significant lever for growth. Wood tells KCRA’s Brandi Cummings that football games are “activator events” that boost alumni engagement, fundraising, and out-of-area enrollment: “Students come to Sacramento State who aren’t from here, they get to see what’s happening and then they basically fill out an application and intend to enroll.” Wood notes student fee hikes followed an inclusive process with town halls, focus groups and a fee-advisory committee, with athletics-facility fees approved unanimously by student vote and says of a scheduled raise he received: “I think that the vast majority of presidents in our system are not paid in comparison to what their value is in the market.” Wood said the university is still “exploring” whether Cal Expo would work as a new football stadium site, but confirmed they would not move there in 2026. “We’re coming to a decision point pretty quick.” (link)

UTSA AD Lisa Campos is “very confident” the Roadrunners can reach the $4-5M revenue-sharing target Football HC Jeff Traylor recently identified as necessary to stay competitive in the American Conference. Campos believes that figure would place UTSA in the top three of the league and says the program is “not that far off,” pointing to ticket sales, donations and institutional support as the core ingredients. With USF planning to spend the full $20.5M House-era cap and Memphis and Tulane among the league’s top investors, Campos emphasizes that closing the gap is an ongoing departmental priority, adding: “We’re so close to the number we think it’s going to take to be competitive. And we need all of San Antonio to invest in this. San Antonio has invested, particularly when we were winning conference championships. We need that to continue to happen, and we’re going to continue to do our part.” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel argues the outrage over Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff snub is evidence the new 12-team system is working rather than failing, as he contends college football is inherently “a spectacular mess,” and the committee exists to “sort through the unsortable.” Despite controversy, Wetzel notes the sport has gone from excluding undefeated teams to arguing over 10–2 resumes and now features a postseason that’s “anchored by a 12-team, 11-game free-for-all.” Wetzel cautions against the sport’s penchant for “knee-jerk decisions” and points out the surest path for major programs remains winning their respective conferences. Independents like Notre Dame, he adds, “trade off” control for flexibility. Wetzel goes on to propose several tweaks, such as ending weekly rankings, fixing tiebreakers (noting the ACC’s failure), expanding home playoff rounds, and even eliminating conference title games; however, he insists the system should protect regular-season relevance. By valuing Miami (FL)’s Week 1 win over Notre Dame, he writes, the committee maintained that principle. “Better to have one or two bitter 10-2 teams out there at the end. Better to have cries and screams and a little bit of infuriation. Better to have those 12 people in a meeting room making a decision. Because in this wonderfully chaotic and disorganized sport, the selection committee, to channel some Winston Churchill, might indeed be the worst system ever, except for all the others.” (link)

Freshly minted Kentucky Football HC Will Stein has agreed to a five-year, $28.5M contract that automatically extends one additional year for each College Football Playoff appearance (up to five added seasons), with each extension year including a $100K increase in annual compensation. The coach will earn $5.5M for the 2026 season, $5.6M in 2027, $5.7M in 2028, $5.8M in 2029, and $5.9M in 2030. The deal provides an assistant and support staff salary pool set at competitive SEC levels, along with up to $2.15M annually in performance incentives tied to CFP participation, SEC championships, win totals, Coach of the Year honors, and team academic benchmarks. If UK terminates the contract without cause, it will owe Stein 70% of his remaining salary, paid monthly over the rest of the term. If the coach terminates without cause, he must pay 30% of the remaining salary back to the university. (link)

Former Kentucky Football HC Mark Stoops will still receive his full $37M+ buyout, but it is getting stretched out through 2031. UK will pay $6.75M per year after issuing a $3.9M lump sum next week. (link)

New Michigan State Football HC Pat Fitzgerald’s employment term sheet doesn’t “address the hiring and firing authority of the Spartans’ new head football coach over his staff,” per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who adds “that omission stands in contrast to the non-binding document signed by Fitzgerald’s predecessor, Jonathan Smith.” Per an MSU spokesperson, the “topic … will be included in the contract,” which has not yet been finalized. The Spartans are set to pay Fitzgerald $30M in non-incentive compensation over the next five seasons, with 72.5% of that remaining money guaranteed if he is fired without cause. Smith’s eight-year, $53M deal guaranteed him 85% of the remaining money if he was fired without cause. Fitzgerald’s term sheet also does not include any reference to a staff salary pool. Smith, by contrast, was assured a minimum pool of $10.75M and was granted full discretion over how that money would be allocated.” More. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand writes that the Paramount-Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery battle could create a “lose-lose” scenario for TNT Sports and the leagues that rely on it. Specifically, if Paramount succeeds with its $108B hostile bid, Ourand notes TNT and CBS Sports would become sister brands, effectively removing a major bidder from the rights marketplace. Guggenheim Securities analyst Michael Morris notes that “fewer buyers means a less competitive bidding process,” potentially depressing future rights fees. Meanwhile, if Netflix prevails, TNT Sports could end up stranded in a low-value “remainco” with WBD’s legacy cable networks. Paramount CEO David Ellison reportedly values that cable portfolio at $1 per share, compared to Bank of America’s $5, signaling an uncertain future for TNT’s ability to compete, especially with its MLB and NHL rights expiring in 2028. Cord-cutting remains the fundamental pressure point, as Morris says linear sports bidders can no longer rely on subscription and ad revenue alone to support escalating rights fees however, MoffettNathanson Co-Founder Michael Nathanson points out a potential upside in a Paramount-WBD merger: Leagues could gain broadcast exposure on CBS, which helped Paramount win UFC rights. Further, Nathanson doesn’t expect a downturn in rights valuations given the aggressive entry of YouTube, Netflix, and Apple: “I’ve been surprised, given the state of the linear business, that the price of sports keeps going up. I’m not sure if it’s going to cool anytime soon, even without TNT Sports in the middle of it.” (link)

Athletes.org has published its first collective bargaining agreement framework that outlines clear terms between student-athletes and a governing body, comparisons to pro sports and the benefits for all parties. The four-year proposal would include a revenue share template agreement, “school-specific revenue-sharing percentage based on pro rata revenue per sport,” a five-year max on eligibility, a removal of third-part NIL limitations and more. Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “We are facing a pivotal moment and must embrace the inevitable change. In order to do that successfully, we need to have all parties at the table to forge a path to a future with clear enforceable rules, alignment with our educational academy and a durable framework that appropriately shares both the investment and growth of our entire enterprise in a stable and sustainable way. Undoubtedly, it’s a complicated road to travel and new ideas will always oblige scrutiny and criticism. We can’t let that deter us. Athletes.org’s CBA draft may not be perfect today, but it’s one of the first concrete blueprints I’ve seen which integrates the athlete’s side of this paradigm shift. It includes the student-athlete’s very necessary perspective around their rights and realities but it also identifies pathways for a wider athlete ecosystem of general participation and Olympic hopefuls. There’s more work to do but efforts like this move the conversation from abstract talking points to workable solutions.” More from Syracuse Chancellor/President Kent Syverud, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Tennessee AD Danny White, Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey and more. Baylor officially announces the hiring of Field & Stream President Doug McNamee as the Bears’ new AD. BU President Linda Livingstone: “Doug's familiarity with Baylor and his recent experience as the chief executive of two national lifestyle and media companies will serve him well as we prioritize increasing revenues, expanding external NIL opportunities for our student-athletes and growing our brand in this new era of college athletics while also engaging our passionate fanbase.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, while appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, remarked on the Fighting Irish’s relationship with the ACC after missing out on a berth in the CFP: “We have no gripes about any of the schools in the ACC. But, we were mystified by the actions of the conference to attack their biggest, really, business partner in football and a member of their conference in 24 of our other sports. … I wouldn’t be honest … if I didn’t say they have certainly done permanent damage to the relationship between the conference and Notre Dame. … We didn’t appreciate the fact that we were singled out repeatedly and compared to Miami. … Miami has every right to do that, but it raised a lot of eyebrows here that the conference was taking shots at us and you know, that’s just not something that we chose to do. We wouldn’t choose to do that in the future and people might disagree with us, but that’s just not something that we’d be comfortable with. … I would just say [Notre Dame’s relationship with the ACC] has been strained.” (link)
|
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips via a statement: "The University of Notre Dame is an incredibly valued member of the ACC and there is tremendous respect and appreciation for the entire institution. With that said, when it comes to football, we have a responsibility to support and advocate for all 17 of our football-playing member institutions, and I stand behind our conference efforts to do just that leading up to the College Football Playoff Committee selections on Sunday. At no time was it suggested by the ACC that Notre Dame was not a worthy candidate for inclusion in the field. We are thrilled for the University of Miami while also understanding and appreciating the significant disappointment of the Notre Dame players, coaches and program.” (link)

U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have introduced the Helping Undergraduate Students Thrive with Long-Term Earnings (HUSTLE) Act, per Fox News’ Ryan Gaydos, who notes via the legislation, college athletes would get the opportunity to put up to $35K in unused NIL account funds into “tax-advantaged investment accounts for student athletes, require trustees to provide financial education, and establish regulations to prevent abuse.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who endorsed the act, remarks: “The HUSTLE Act represents a constructive approach by establishing tax-advantaged NIL investment accounts that encourage financial education, long-term savings, and responsible management of earnings. We appreciate Congress’s sustained bipartisan commitment to developing national, consistent standards that support student-athletes and enhance their opportunities in this rapidly changing environment." Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard breaks down the current NIL situation in Ames. Here are Pollard’s key remarks to the media today…
➤ “We allocated the $20M. Football got $13M, men’s basketball got $5M, wrestling got $1M and women’s basketball got $750K. Every one of those coaches wants more money, but somebody’s got to make the decision of what you’re gonna get. Would [Men’s Basketball HC] T.J. [Otzelberger] want more money, does his team need more money? Yes. We can’t give him anymore rev share because we’re at the cap. As an institution, I don’t know how we’re funding it.” ➤ “We’ve gotta continue to work really hard to try to figure out how Iowa State can exist above the cap, but that’s not something we get to do. The NCAA took it away. You can’t go to donors anymore. You can’t put it in a collective anymore. All you can do is business-to-business. So, we’ve gotta find sponsors that are willing to do that. At the same time, our total sponsorship sales are $12M and we need that $12M just to be able to do what we’re currently doing and we just added $20M more of expenses, right? The realistic thought that there’s this huge amount of money out there that’s over and above the cap that’s legal, it’s gonna take a lot of work. You can’t snap your fingers and make that happen. When you hear these numbers over the cap, no one can put that in writing.”

New Penn State Football HC Matt Campbell’s eight-year, $70.5M guaranteed contract starts with a 2026 base salary plus supplemental compensation of $8M before seeing $250K bumps in years two and three, followed by a $500K raise in year four, before his total comp grows to $9.25M in 2031. Campbell will also reap a $1M retention bonus per contract year, receive an automatic one-year extension for making the College Football Playoff with a compensation increase of no less than an additional $500K and an automatic two-year extension for winning a national title with a compensation increase of no less than an additional $1M. If PSU terminates Campbell, it will pay him 100% of the guaranteed compensation for the remainder of the employment agreement subject to mitigation. Penn State will also pay Iowa State $2M as part of an anticipated buyout. More. (link)

UNLV isn’t waiting on the NCAA to approve jersey patches as part of schools’ uniforms next season as the Rebels, through Learfield’s UNLV Sports Properties, have inked a five-year, $11M partnership to name Acesso Biologics as the Official Jersey Patch Partner for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball; south field goal net sponsor and also become the first official multi-sport corporate jersey patch and on-field logo partner in the NCAA. AD Erick Harper: “There’s always a concern that something doesn’t go through, but I think we have to think more positively and think that this is something that the NCAA and the voting parties will determine that this is best for our student athletes, not to make it look like a billboard on their jerseys.” The corporate jersey patch rule proposal is expected to be voted on by the NCAA membership in January 2026, and if passed, would take effect on August 1, 2026. LSU football season-ticket prices won’t be going up after all in 2026, per Nola.com’s Jason Willis, who notes the Board of Supervisors and Tigers’ athletic department recently announced a reversal of October’s price hike that would have pocketed the school more than $4.5M in additional revenue from specific sections “with high renewal rates and high secondary market values.” (link)

In its first year selling alcohol at Memorial Stadium, Clemson sold 173,775 alcoholic beverages totaling $1,822,871 over seven home contests per Tigers vendor Aramark. According to the Post and Courier’s Jon Blau, just over 45K of those alcoholic drinks were sold during the season opener against LSU, amounting to nearly $500K in sales, while the university ended up averaging 24,825 beverages sold at each home contest. The only other game to eclipse 30K alcoholic drinks sold was the match-up versus Florida State, which totaled 31,016 at a value of $323,760. More. (link)
