Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell sat down with SBJ’s Abe Madkour at the SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum yesterday and reiterated his position college athletics “has a money problem,” adding: “We have this very professionalized cost side where coaches and athletes are getting paid a bunch of money, but we have this disjointed, amateur model for generating revenue.” Campbell argued that the system is fundamentally undermonetized, noting that “the average FBS school had a $20M deficit” even before revenue sharing under the House settlement. Campbell acknowledged there’s been a learning curve associated with his increased involvement in college sports and said: “I’m not acting like I have all the solutions, but what I would like to do is create a legal framework and a platform that would allow those folks who are the experts to come together and find ways to make college sports financially sustainable.” Campbell endorses federal action and says that the general principles of the SCORE Act were well intended and that President Trump’s executive order is “an unfunded mandate,” adding: “There has to be one set of rules. It’s an interstate thing. How can we have a national championship without a consistent set of national rules?” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares some updates around College Football Playoff expansion, noting that ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips describes the rankings shows as “incredibly disruptive” and believes they cause “stress and friction” to the process. He adds: “I understand why they do the shows and it’s part of the agreement with ESPN, but it causes great anxiety throughout. We have to find a better way moving forward.” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says that commissioners have for years privately held discussions about limiting the shows. “They are maybe not the best thing for the enterprise itself. I think it’s a subject we should revisit and have a very direct conversation with our TV partner.” Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould believes there are two ways of looking at the shows: “On one hand, it creates a somewhat premature expectation about where teams are sitting. However, the positive is we are trying to grow college football’s brand. The fan engagement and interest and eyeballs, [the shows] do that. People watch it.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert joins the Helluva Podcast and calls Football HC Brent Key’s new contract a clear investment in competing at the highest level. Alpert traces it back to President Ángel Cabrera’s charge to build an athletic department that complements a world-class education and calls locking in Key “a no brainer,” noting three straight winning seasons and three straight bowls. The deal also codifies the Yellow Jackets’ continued investment in “player acquisition, player retention, revenue share above the cap strategy,” support staff and assistant coaches, and facilities like the new Fanning Center and the Bobby Dodd renovation. Alpert says Georgia Tech has set a goal of 5,000 new season ticket holders and ties that directly to sustaining a championship-level program: “We made our commitment to Coach and we’re asking folks to make their commitment and buy season tickets and come out and support.” (link)

Former Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore was in custody in the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday night as a suspect in an alleged assault, just hours after he was let go as the Wolverines HC. According to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel, Moore was initially detained by police in Saline, Michigan, on Wednesday and turned over to authorities in Pittsfield Township "for investigation into potential charges." Pittsfield police released a statement Wednesday night indicating they responded at 4:10 PM to a call "for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault. ... A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details." (link)

Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jacob Polacheck and Jack Pilgrim talked to “numerous sources across the college basketball and recruiting landscape over the past month to get answers on why Kentucky has yet to land a 2026 recruit” in men’s basketball and note the “answers display a wide range of issues, including JMI’s involvement, negative recruiting against Mark Pope, and emotions at the closing table.” Since extending its multimedia rights agreement with JMI earlier this year (for a reported $465M through 2040), Polacheck and Pilgrim note UK “has not landed a player on the recruiting trail and add that “JMI, in conjunction with the UK basketball staff, is requiring prospective student-athletes to sign away NIL rights that would normally be untouched at any other school. … Through [the JMI deal], athletes can broker deals with UK’s 200+ official partners, or try to find their own third-party deals; however, [AD] Mitch Barnhart himself admitted the latter may be trickier than the former, as the university strives to protect the brand.” One source tells them: “I will say that Kentucky is the only school I’ve dealt with that even has anything remotely like this in their contracts.” Another says: “We didn’t really get a hard number until it was late in the game. … I think they kind of knew what their number was, but they tried to save all their money, banking on getting Tyran [Stokes]. It pushed a lot of the other recruits away. You’re acting with us like you don’t know a number, but then other schools are telling us a number. You’re saying this space is so unknown, but how is it unknown when you have 10 other schools telling you a number, and one other school not telling you a number?” Lots more. (link)

Texas has issued an RFP seeking private developer(s) "to plan, design, construct, equip, finance and operate" a 6,000-seat volleyball arena and an adjacent student-athlete housing facility. The RFP states these two construction projects would have "minimal financial outlay from the University.” Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte: "This is a critical step for the future of Texas volleyball and our student-athletes' housing experience. It is about creating an experience that our student-athletes, coaches and passionate fans will be proud of in the heart of a district built for elite talent and entertainment." Horns247’s Chip Brown notes that “under the proposed public-private collaboration, UT would own both the new arena…as well as the student-athlete housing properties, and an outside entity would operate them.” (link); Take a look at renderings of the project. Charles Schwab Field Omaha recently partnered with Daktronics for the manufacturing and installation of five LED displays at the home of the annual Men’s College World Series. At 43.5 feet high by 60 feet wide, the two newly installed outfield displays are capable of variable content zoning to share a mixture of live video, instant replays, statistics, game information, graphics, animations, sponsorship messages and more. Along the seating fascia, a long, narrow ribbon display measuring nearly 4 feet high by 822 feet wide was installed to share additional statistics, graphics and sponsorship messages throughout events. Additionally, a double-sided marquee display was set-up outside the venue, measuring nearly 12 feet high by 20 feet wide to capture audiences’ attention and engage them before, during and after every event. Included in the equipment installation, which was completed in fall 2025, Daktronics Creative Services also delivered a designed and produced content package to bring the displays to life. (link).

With the recent expansion to include short-term workforce programs adding to existing structural funding problems, the Pell Grant program faces a 10-year shortfall of up to $97B, per the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. While this past summer’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act granted the program $10.5B in one-time funding in an effort to avoid a looming budget shortfall, it will only delay the inevitable by about two years. CRFB expects the Pell Grant program’s costs to exceed its funding by $6B to $11B each year over the next decade, noting: ”The underlying structural gap between costs and appropriations remains unaddressed, and in fact was made worse under OBBBA.” Per Higher Ed Dive’s Natalie Schwartz: “Researchers estimated the Pell Grant program would face a $61B, 10-year shortfall if lawmakers keep its appropriations adjusted for inflation and maintain the maximum award of $7,395. If lawmakers keep both appropriations and the maximum award flat, that shortfall would reach $88B. Moreover, the shortfall would hit $97B if lawmakers raise Pell Grant funding and the maximum award in line with inflation and Workforce Pell enrollment outpaces expectations.” (link)

It was ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips’ turn to take the stage at the SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, where he said of College Football Playoff expansion: “If it was 16, we wouldn't be having these conversations. I would just say there's such heartache at that cut line right now. My barometer about what's enough and what's not enough is if you are leaving teams out of the playoff that could win a national championship, then you don't have the right number. … So I think you have to at least look at 16, but you may need to look a little bit more than that. That's what we're doing. The P4 commissioners were together yesterday morning and had a great session as we are evaluating some of those options. Then we want to take it back to the management committee…and try to come up with what's the right thing for college football.” More from Phillips on stage in Vegas…
➤ On the league’s success initiative, Phillips noted “it’s a model that people are looking at. To me it's incredibly innovative. I don't know if it fits all conferences, but as I sit here today, and if we come back here in another 24 months, I promise you there will be other conferences that have done this. … It incentivizes our schools to absolutely invest in their programs. Let's compete. You get a baseline. Let's compete on the field and let's compete for viewership. It doesn't mean if you're a smaller school you don't have the same chance. Go out, have a good team and go compete against some really other good big brands. That will help raise your profile. I think it's been fantastic. It has galvanized us. It has leaped us forward, and the conference is as healthy as ever.”
➤ Phillips on private equity: “My number one responsibility is to make sure my board is educated and informed. We have had multiple conversations with a variety of PE folks and banking folks and all of those types of things. … It's necessary for us not to just push it aside because it's not applicable right now. If there's ways to run our business — the business of college sports — better, we would be well-served to listen to those that are the experts in that area: the financial area, the PE area. So we are on a pretty regular cadence, and we'll look forward to continuing to do that with our presidents. … The challenge ends up being, when you have 16 or 18 schools, does it fit all schools’ sizes, where they're at, what their endowment is? … But I'm excited about where we're going with that, considering that every day there's new information in that space.” More. Per SBJ’s Chris Smith, one key theme that emerged from SBJ IAF today was the political and even educational role ADs now play in relationships with numerous and varied stakeholders. Here are some of the perspectives…
➤ South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati: “Whether it’s legislators, board members, donors, your own president or chancellor -- with all this change, you really need to do a good job educating them so they know what you’re planning to do with all these resources that we’re asking for. Because every year it’s just more and more. … This is the cheapest it will ever be to run and operate our businesses.”
➤ Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey: “Politics in general are not necessarily challenging, per se, it’s just more added to the plate of what our responsibilities are. ... And obviously politics are very much a part of college athletics. With what’s happening federally with higher ed and the monies that maybe are being taken away, I now have a seat at this table to fight because every time the institution is hit, it dominoes into athletics and what we’re able to continue to work towards, creating a sustainable model in a very chaotic time.”
➤ Maryland AD Jim Smith: “It’s a huge role going forward in how we manage whatever cap version we have in making sure that we have the sustainable infrastructure that can support good decision making within all our sports. It’s not just about football. It’s many of the sports are spending rev share dollars or NIL dollars, and making sure that they understand the impact of where those dollars are going, the return on those dollars, and the investment in the research that we did to allocate out those dollars.” (link)

UMBC and former Retrievers AD Brian Barrio have settled a federal lawsuit out of court that Barrio filed alleging he was fired and held responsible for former UMBC Swimming & Diving HC Chad Cradock’s sexual misconduct. Barrio: “Today’s settlement finally vindicates me and allows me to move on after a long and difficult period. It was important for the record to reflect that I handled this situation with integrity and with care for students. This settlement brings closure for me and for my family, and I hope it underscores the importance of supporting those who take the right actions when faced with misconduct in the workplace and encourages others to speak up and take action if they are faced with a similar situation.” More. South Carolina is seeking a declaratory judgement from the state Supreme Court relating to a contract dispute with the ongoing $350M Williams-Brice Stadium renovation and “lifetime” Gamecock Club member George Lee III, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes that at stake is “whether Lee and roughly 200 other ‘Lifetime Members’ can assert rights to the stadium’s new premium suites -- assets expected to generate around $200M over the next decade and viewed as essential funding for the renovation.” Portnoy: “The university contends Lee and the roughly 200 Lifetime Members are guaranteed access to four season football tickets, but not rights to the new premium suites [ranging in price from $77K-$150K plus a capital gift]. The suites now being constructed, the university believes, are not simply better tickets than those available at Williams-Brice Stadium when Lee signed his contract in 1990, but a fundamentally different product. … The concern is that if these contracts are applicable to the new spaces it could jeopardize the revenues that are an impetus for the project.” Lee: “It kind of tries to paint me as the guy that wants to blow up the whole project. And that’s not true. That’s the furthest thing from the truth.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has approved a negotiated resolution following an investigation that uncovered sports betting violations by former San Francisco Men’s Basketball student-athlete Marcus Williams that trigger permanent ineligibility. Per the agreement, Williams knowingly provided information to another men's basketball student-athlete at a different school, who was betting on daily fantasy platforms on Williams' performance. Additionally, Williams did not cooperate with the investigation when he knowingly provided false or misleading information. The violations were uncovered when the enforcement staff reviewed text messages for a separate infractions case involving former Fresno State student-athlete Mykell Robinson. Records on Robinson's phone indicated that on nine occasions between November 2024 and January 2025, Williams knowingly provided information to Robinson, who was betting on Williams through daily fantasy sports accounts. In each instance, Williams directed Robinson to take the over line on his performance. (link)

Football season tickets for the 2026 UTSA season are now on sale, and every dollar of revenue from the new season tickets is going directly to student-athlete revenue sharing. Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “With the positive momentum our Football program continues to build, this new revenue-sharing opportunity allows every new season-ticket purchase to directly enhance the experience of our student-athletes and impact our results on the field. This provides a powerful and meaningful way for our community to invest in the future of our program and the student-athletes who represent this university.” (link)

Georgia has mutually agreed to cancel a pair of upcoming home-and-home series against Louisville (2026 & 2027) and NC State (2033 & 2034) as part of the SEC’s new nine-game league schedule expansion, per the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, who adds UGA and UofL are still exploring playing a neutral site match-up at a later date. Louisville AD Josh Heird says the decision was “mutual, and strategic,” according to WDRB’s Eric Crawford, who notes: “Once Georgia opted out of the 2026 game, Louisville could have enforced multiple contract clauses — including a $1M cancellation penalty and a separate fee if Georgia declined to host the 2027 return trip. But taking such a measure actually would have had a price tag for Louisville, too. To make room for Georgia, Louisville would have had to buy out other already-scheduled non-conference opponents in both 2026 and 2027 to accommodate the ACC’s move to a nine-game conference schedule. That additional cost, Heird said, ‘would have added unnecessary cost without improving our overall competitive position.’“ (link, link)
