Pacific and Willamette have signed a letter of intent to work towards a merger to become the tentatively named University of the Northwest, which would be Oregon’s largest private university. Willamette President Stephen Thorsett: “The thing that is just different about this compared to almost any other merger going on at the moment nationally is that it is not a small failing institution or an institution that’s concerned about its sustainability merging into a bigger institution. This is a merger of two equals. We believe that Oregon deserves a great private university, a university that the rest of the country can look at as a model for what could be built elsewhere.” Should the merger come to fruition, both campuses would maintain separate identities and athletic programs while being governed by a single board of trustees. NCAA President Charlie Baker sits down for an interview with Yahoo’s Kendall Baker and explains that upon taking the job, he talked with upwards of 1,000 student-athletes to get a lay of the land, many of whom brought up issues around sports gambling. Baker points out the NCAA bears heightened responsibility because college athletes lack the buffers of professional players: “There’s a big difference between being a professional athlete with a lot of structure and a lot of advisors around you, and being a kid who eats in a dining hall. And studies in a library. And goes to class with their classmates. And is so much more gettable with respect to practically anything around this. So yeah, for sure, [we feel an added responsibility].” Baker also emphasizes that prop bet requests undermine team play even when they stop short of outright game-fixing: “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m not asking you to do something awful or terrible. I’m not asking you to throw the game,’ right? But what you are asking them to do is not play the game the way they would choose to play it if their goal was to be a good teammate and win.” As for prediction markets: “You see DraftKings and FanDuel dropping out of the American Gaming Association… I'd be willing to conclude that a big part of their reasoning is they're going to get into the prediction market space. They can't afford to let those folks dominate all that green space they can't currently access. It just says this whole thing is going to get worse unless somebody does something about it. And solving it at the federal level is going to be really challenging because it's still new and not fully formed. So, I mean, you're basically talking about no rules, no oversight, no nothing. And that just feels catastrophic to me. Not just for us, but for everybody.” More. (link)

The Committee on Infractions has found that a SUNY Old Westbury booster paid for full-tuition aid for nine women’s basketball student-athletes and offered to pay for another prospect who did not enroll. The former HC engaged the booster to be involved in the recruitment process but was unaware of the promise to provide scholarships. As a result, the department has been placed on one-year probation, fined $1,250, vacated records from games in which ineligible student-athletes competed and permanently disassociate with the individual. The former HC has also been hit with a one-year show-cause. (link)

The HCAC and MIAA will renew their football crossover series from 2026 through 2028. MIAA Commissioner Jason Horn: “Using the NPI rankings to set the matchups strengthens the competitive integrity of the event and sets us up for some great competition. The MIAA values this partnership with the HCAC and looks forward to continuing the agreement into the future.” (link)

Efforts to overhaul NCAA men’s soccer may have received a boost from MLS’ recent decision to alter its schedule by moving its playoffs to the spring as part of a July-to-May season calendar switch, per Sportico’s Luke Cyphers, who adds the change “dovetails with reforms proposed by U.S. Soccer’s NextGen College Soccer Committee” which recommends “moving the men’s game, and perhaps the women’s, from the current fall-only schedule to one that covers the entire scholastic year and culminates in an April playoff festival.” New U.S. Soccer COO Dan Helfrich: “If the two calendars are in alignment, the late spring becomes a chance for a celebration of soccer in the U.S. And if the right people get together, which I think they will, and align planning and marketing and broadcasting and those types of things, you can have a ton of synergy with high-stakes, postseason soccer in the springtime. … If you lay all of the college calendars on top of one another, you see this really interesting window between the end of March Madness and the start of the spring postseason for lacrosse, softball and baseball in that second half of April, early May timeframe. We feel very confident that we can activate the college athletics fan in a way that galvanizes and grows soccer.” More. (link)

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered interest rates to a range of between 3.5% to 3.75% despite objections from several key Fed officials who believe the central bank should be prioritizing the higher cost of living instead. In a post-meeting news conference, Chair Jerome Powell said additional rate cuts will be tougher to justify, frequently pointing out that central bankers have now lowered rates three times this year. Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw reports the Paramount-Netflix bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to stretch well into 2026 as Paramount and Netflix brace for a prolonged fight. Warner Bros. has 10 business days to respond to Paramount’s hostile $30/share offer, but is not expected to unwind its recently signed merger agreement with Netflix, which would trigger a $2.8B breakup fee. In the meantime, Paramount continues to weigh its next steps, including pursuing a January 8 tender offer, extending its bid, litigating to block Netflix’s deal, or raising its price. Both bidders have signaled capacity to raise their offers. Paramount CEO David Ellison is courting investors in D.C. and on Wall Street. More. (link)
