NCAA President Charlie Baker sits down for an interview with Yahoo’s Kendall Baker and explains that upon taking the job he talked with upwards of 1,000 student-athletes to get a lay of the land, many of whom brought up issues around sports gambling. Here are the key nuggets from Baker…
➤ Baker believes the pressure prop bets put on student-athletes is likely not something that’s fully understood yet, as student-athletes are told: “‘Look, I don’t want you to lose the game, but just don’t score more than 20 points. Miss your first shot. Don’t hit your first free throw. Don’t catch your first pass.’ It sounds so easy to the person who’s trying to get the kid to do this, and it’s just relentless, the pressure.”
➤ He emphasizes that these requests undermine team play even when they stop short of outright game-fixing: “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m not asking you to do something awful or terrible. I’m not asking you to throw the game,’ right? But what you are asking them to do is not play the game the way they would choose to play it if their goal was to be a good teammate and win.”
➤ As for prediction markets: “You see DraftKings and FanDuel dropping out of the American Gaming Association… I'd be willing to conclude that a big part of their reasoning is they're going to get into the prediction market space. They can't afford to let those folks dominate all that green space they can't currently access. It just says this whole thing is going to get worse unless somebody does something about it. And solving it at the federal level is going to be really challenging because it's still new and not fully formed. So, I mean, you're basically talking about no rules, no oversight, no nothing. And that just feels catastrophic to me. Not just for us, but for everybody.” More. (link)

At SBJ’s IAF session “What’s Next for College Basketball?,” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman, Alabama AD Greg Byrne, ESPN SVP of Programming & Acquisitions Nick Dawson and NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt outlined the pressures and opportunities shaping the future of college basketball as the sport navigates revenue sharing, NIL, the transfer portal and shifting pro pathways. Key takeaways…
➤ Ackerman emphasized the need for unity and identity as realignment continues to revolve around football: “The idea of preserving this incredible basketball tradition of this group of schools who care deeply about basketball ... it brought back memories of what the Big East went through 15 years ago with schools leaving to pursue their football dreams. ... We lived the wars. ... Now that we’re adapting to this new environment, our schools are going to continue to do what they need to do in order to maintain relevancy in the sport.”
➤ Byrne warned that escalating expenses and revenue-sharing pressures are straining the sport’s long-term financial model: “The growth last year in the rev-share NIL market at the end of the season was really challenging. ... We have a healthy profit in football. We historically have turned a profit in men’s basketball, and then we have 19 sports that don’t. ... We’re in a better financial position than most any institution out there, and I’m really concerned about the long-term financial outlook of [basketball].”
➤ Gavitt underscored basketball’s centrality to the NCAA business model and pointed out that “last year’s men’s basketball championship grossed about $1.17B, and the women’s tournament is profitable and growing exponentially… The challenge is how we continue to drive that value long-term… making sure the tournaments are relevant, modern and contemporary… while also honoring the heritage and tradition that makes them so special.”
➤ Meanwhile, Dawson argued that NIL and revenue sharing have actually strengthened the on-court product: “I actually think the product of men’s and women’s college basketball… is better than it has been in a decade-plus. You’ve got more players returning to school to play. Obviously, rev-share, NIL has been a huge factor in keeping top tier talent in the college game longer than historically has been the case.” Dawson also noted the network now sells ad units for men's and women's college basketball games at the same price and that featuring women's games in primetime is now a revenue-neutral decision, which should continue to help exposure. More from the SBJ IAF, where leaders warned that the House settlement’s $20.5M revenue-sharing model, heavily concentrated in football and men’s basketball, poses direct threats to Olympic and women’s sports. A Knight Commission/Elon poll of nearly 400 administrators found that 55% expect women’s sports to be worse off, including 64% of presidents/chancellors and 52% of SWAs – but only 30% of athletic directors. UCLA AD Martin Jarmond posited that campuses will take a fragmented approach absent a national model: “The fundamental issue is how are we going to fund Olympic sports moving forward?” While he expects the 2028 LA Olympics to trigger an historic U.S. Olympic performance, he fears a “potential cliff” afterward. “The pro model, you’re seeing more investment now in women’s soccer, women’s basketball, volleyball. And my hope is that starts to bleed into the college athletics movement and coincide with this LA28 Olympics because you’re starting to see that not only are there growth opportunities in women’s sports professionally, but it’s revenue opportunities, investment opportunities.” (link)

Michigan Interim President Domenico Grasso sent a letter to the campus community explaining the school will continue to investigate the events associated with former Football HC Sherrone Moore’s dismissal. NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach notes the investigation is being conducted by the Jenner & Block law firm, and “the scope of the investigation includes the alleged inappropriate relationship and the school’s response.” (link)

NBC Sports President Rick Cordella tells Puck’s John Ourand that criticisms lobbed against Notre Dame have missed the mark. “Having our Notre Dame and Big Ten partnerships has been a great combination for us of tier-one college football. We’ve had this property for well over 30 years, and it was a premier property back then and it still is today. The conversations we’re having right now across America about Notre Dame not being in the CFP – that’s because it’s Notre Dame. That same conversation would not happen with any other team.” More from Cordella: “We know that brand advertisers want to be associated with the Notre Dame brand. They pay a premium in order to do so versus other college football teams. We still look at Notre Dame as being a much higher premium property than many other properties.” Ourand adds: “He’s got a point: When Netflix considered poaching a college football property that it could eventize, the company focused on Notre Dame. Anyway, that CFP expansion can’t come soon enough.” (link)

The LA Bowl will end after Saturday’s game between Washington and Boise State, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy, who adds: “The bowl’s current 6-year contract concludes after this season. The bowl was created in 2020 to be played in SoFi Stadium, pairing up the Mountain West champion against the fifth selection from the Pac-12. The bowl’s fate was ultimately decided when conference realignment gutted the Pac-12 and the league lost 10 schools to the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.” (link)

Boise State will undergo a full reseating of ExtraMile Arena for men's basketball season ticket holders for the 2026-27 season as well as launch a new, high-energy courtside fan section for the most "Blue Collar" fans. Men’s basketball parking will also go through a reallocation process. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: "We, like so many others in college athletics, are impacted by revenue share with student-athletes, and the resources we need to maintain a winning program and improve the fan experience in ExtraMile Arena call for us to find opportunities outside of our current revenue streams. … Our industry has changed, and we have to play the hand we're dealt to the best of our ability. Reseating does not mean our current fans will not have seats. We will have price points for our most Blue Collar fans, especially for those wanting to be a part of our new high-energy, courtside fan section.” (link)

Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman reports the Arizona Board of Regents and Arizona State “were found not liable by an eight-person jury in former ASU athletic department administrator David Cohen’s wrongful termination lawsuit that alleged retaliation by former AD Ray Anderson for reporting a sexual harassment claim against a former booster. Anderson testified he regretted going on a golf trip with the booster who was later disassociated following an investigation… and made a mistake to not report the claim made by the wives of Cohen, Bobby Hurley and another former staffer prior to Cohen’s dismissal. The jury determined there wasn’t enough evidence to demonstrate that Cohen was illegally fired for retaliation, despite there being no formal investigation for approximately 5 months after Cohen informed Anderson, and not until after he was put on administrative leave. Cohen was terminated, per Anderson’s testimony, based on his overall performance over 6+ years, despite Bobby Hurley’s testimony that Cohen did a good job in one of his main roles, as bball administrator, and despite being give a $95K discretionary bonus out of a maximum $100K.” (link)

Eligibility certification violations occurred at Western Illinois across 12 sports over four academic years, according to the NCAA, which explains: “Due to the extensive nature of the violations, the school failed to monitor its eligibility certification process. In total, 23 student-athletes in 12 sports were permitted to compete in 349 contests while ineligible, four student-athletes received impermissible financial aid and seven student-athletes were not withheld from subsequent seasons of competition. The penalties for Western Illinois include three years of probation; a $25,000 fine; public reprimand and censure; vacation of team and individual records; participation in an NCAA Academic Performance (APP) data review; and attendance by select staff members with certification responsibilities at the NCAA Regional Rules seminar during each year of the probationary period.” (link)

Three weeks after conferences deployed the College Sports Commission’s “Participation Agreement” to their members – and a week past an original signing deadline – the answer to the question if all schools will sign the CSC’s document remains unclear. Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes “Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said he’s ‘confident’ that schools will sign a modified agreement – at some point. ‘It won’t happen overnight,’ he emphasized, but there will be ‘adjustments’ to the document that leaders believe will lead to 68 signatures. Will that really happen? There are plenty of doubters who believe that, no matter the changes, the document is dead. There are others … that are optimistic about it happening. … What’s interesting about all of this is that the document isn’t really necessary. … The participation agreement only adds ‘meat’ to the bones of the House settlement. Basically, the schools, in agreeing unanimously to the settlement, have already agreed to follow all of these rules. The participation agreement was only to reinforce those terms and prohibit schools from legal challenges over enforcement, which have in the past cratered the NCAA’s ability to enforce its rules and regulations. As it turns out, dozens of schools have already signed the agreement. But without all of them, the document is mostly moot.” More. (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie joined the JohnWallStreet Big Business on Campus podcast to discuss how the Demon Deacons play in the revenue space: “There's two ways to make a profit, … sell more product and manage expenses. Managing expenses is something I think we've done really well. We certainly did it at Kansas State, and we've done it here in optimizing return over those managed expenses. No matter how much money and revenue that you get, and increases in television contracts and all this kind of stuff, if you don't exercise some kind of discipline on the expense side, it's never enough. It’s like heroin. You just need more and more and more and more, and then eventually, it kills you. … We've been fortunate at Wake Forest, and I've been fortunate most of all, but there's a windfall, and then boom, they go spend it. I know what it costs per win in head coaching salary at Wake Forest this year, and it's less than a lot of other people. The ROI on cost per win is better at Wake Forest than it's for a lot of other people. There's different reasons for that.” Lots more from Currie. (link)

NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach reports Michigan had been alerted prior to yesterday’s events that Football HC Sherrone Moore was dealing with mental health issues, adding that despite this knowledge, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel “fired him alone with no HR rep and no security present.” (link)
|
Bestselling author and Michigan historian John U. Bacon visited with FOX 2 Detroit’s Ryan Ermanni this morning to discuss the situation surrounding fired UM Football HC Sherrone Moore. On yesterday’s events that led to Moore’s firing: “[Moore] and this employee at the Michigan football building were investigated by the university this summer and both denied any relationship at that time. That story changed yesterday morning when she went [to the administration office] with the receipts.” More: “I guarantee the [Board of Regents] is working on those two issues, who knew what and when? I’ll say this much in defense of the university, they did have the investigation internally this summer and if both parties say there’s nothing happening, there’s not a lot else they can do other than respond to rumors. Now, they’ve brought in a Washington D.C. law firm … to investigate the entire department. … That is going to be a very serious report, external third-party, of course, and that will have a lot to say.” (link)

Wake Forest receives a $20M donation from alum Bob McCreary to kickstart the $100M McCreary Triple Double Challenge, which had raised $45M prior to McCreary’s gift. LSU inks an extension with Nike through 2036 to become its first Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program with 10 LSU student-athletes signing deals with the company. Nike EVP of Global Sports Marketing Ann Miller: “College sport is woven into Nike’s DNA, and we’ve always believed its future should be shaped in lockstep with athletes. Renewing our partnership with LSU and welcoming 10 new NIL athletes is about more than gear. It’s about collaboration, creativity and meaningful impact, giving athletes a platform to influence product, innovation, storytelling and culture. LSU and these athletes aren’t just representing Nike — they’re helping us redefine what partnership means in this new era of college sport. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams notes the company’s college sports strategy “mirrors a much broader return-to-basics approach for the $96B footwear giant.” More. (link, link, link)

Ole Miss has issued an RFP seeking a development partner (or team) for a mixed-use development project through a public-private partnership model on a long-term ground lease, to create an entertainment district on 25 acres surrounding Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick. The RFP outlines a 100-key, 30-condo condotel, at least 35K-square feet of retail and dining space, a half-acre plaza on the north side of the stadium, additional premium hospitality offerings inside the stadium, including 20 suites and at least 12.5K-square feet of flexible hospitality space, and roughly 50K-square feet of athletic department office space. The project will help Ole Miss take advantage of underutilized land adjacent to the stadium and improve the area’s aesthetics, which deteriorate in the space between The Grove tailgating area and the stadium itself. The 2028 L.A. Olympic and Paralympic Games could force USC to find a new football home for the 2028 campaign, most likely SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. Per The Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, “multiple people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to discuss it publicly told The Times that the Coliseum would not be ready for the start of college football season in September 2028 because of the $100M temporary track that’s being built on top of the Coliseum field to host the track-and-field competition. … A source said the school hasn’t officially determined whether the Coliseum field could be ready later in the fall, perhaps to host a portion of USC’s 2028 home schedule. But even if it is logistically possible, it’s not clear that USC’s athletic department would find that arrangement in its best interest, given it would mean uprooting the team midseason or spending a long stretch of the 2028 slate away from L.A.. … With the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games set for Aug. 27, 2028, there would be just two weeks for the temporary track to be removed and the grass field below to be restored ahead of USC’s currently scheduled 2028 home opener on Sept. 9. … That’s not a feasible timeline for a structure LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman once called ‘the most expensive and probably complicated thing we actually have to build’ ahead of the 2028 Games.” More.
