Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger broke the news that the Big 12 is finalizing a deal with RedBird and Weatherford Capital - via their joint Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS) investment vehicle - that would infuse as much as $500M into Big 12 members who opt-in through a “multifaceted strategic business partnership,” with a focus on growing commercial operations. Here are more nuggets from a number of sources…
➤ CAS is offering roughly $30 million to each member school in a capital credit line at a reduced rate. Schools are not required to accept the capital. Also, deals like Utah’s with Otro Capital would not be impacted.
➤ “CAS would put $25 million into a new entity called Big 12 properties that would house some of the league’s commercial rights.”
➤ “RedBird will also work with the Conference to identify complementary investment opportunities inside and outside of the collegiate athletics ecosystem that will create new revenue streams and long-term asset appreciation.”
➤ “Schools will be able to opt into the funds, with participants conceding future conference distributions for the upfront cash, a source said. In other words, CAS would share in revenue generated under the partnership with the involved schools. There is no equity involved in the current proposal, and no grant of rights would be signed by the conference’s 16 members as part of the deal because it is time-limited to the league’s current media deals, according to the source.”
➤ Moelis is the banker of record for the deal.

As he approaches the end of his 28-year tenure, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione rejected the idea of “retirement,” instead preferring “refocus, repurpose, redirect, recalibrate.” He told attendees at SBJ’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum that he won’t be “sitting back and doing nothing,” emphasizing that any success during his tenure was the product of “the great people that we’ve had, the collective efforts of everybody, the great intellect and skill and creativity and innovation that they bring to whatever role it is that they have.” For the next generation of ADs, Castiglione advises controlling the controllables. “We are burning through resources faster than they come in sometimes. And being very wise in the area of revenue generation and all the different vehicles that are available for us. … ADs have got to be willing to look at new models that can help us manage the world going forward, still be RevGen, still be relational, still have the ability to hire and retain great coaches and as well as your staff, still connect with stakeholders. We’re in a world that we’re going to constantly have to pivot and be flexible, and that’s the nature of our business right now.” (link)

The University of Michigan Board of Regents has authorized the law firm Jenner & Block to expand its investigation into the "situation" around former Football HC Sherrone Moore's firing. The firm was previously hired to investigate the allegations against Moore weeks ago, when the board first heard the rumors. According to the Detroit News’ Sarah Atwood: “The firm's investigation into the entire situation will continue and look into the way Moore's firing was handled and the culture of the athletic department that allowed his relationship with a subordinate to go on.” Of note, Jenner & Block is the same firm the university's board hired to investigate the allegations of former President Mark Schlissel's relationship with a university employee. Memphis AD Ed Scott talks about the pressure he feels in the AD chair, noting that he “has a city that’s relying on me,” as well as staff that have moved from around the country. “They feed their families because of decisions that I make. I make decisions on behalf of 400 student-athletes every day about what’s in their best interests and over 200 staff members, and we’re going to have a budget this year of about $80M. I feel a lot of pressure every day. I’m the first Black AD in the history of Memphis. I can’t fail. I will not fail because if I do, people who look like me don’t get a shot. And it’s not just Black people. It’s brown people, it’s women, it’s everybody else. So, yeah, I feel pressure every day. And I’m okay with that. … I’m not afraid of pressure. I’m afraid of not trying to do something out of fear. I’d rather try and fail.” More from Scott, who spoke with reporters after announcing the hire of Football HC Charles Huff. (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor sits down for his latest Ask the AD segment. On being aggressive in the NIL space: “I would say we're very aggressive. The challenge for us has been we've had to focus so heavily on the $20,500,000 because we have to get that. Where a lot of schools are getting significant investments from their university. We work with our university, but right now, this first year, we have to fund that all through our donors and through our other revenue sources. So we haven't had a chance to really go out and get aggressive. Now that we've got the 20 million mostly in place, that's our next focus.” On private equity: “We did early on look at private equity several months ago, when it was just starting to come into college athletics. It didn't work for us. Our donors were... not skeptical, but it's just there's a lot of percentage that they take out of that they want back out of that private equity. The Utah thing's a little unique. I haven't studied it enough to really dive into it deeply. It's a little different. There are some things when I read it that I would be uncomfortable as the Athletic Director of giving up in terms of what they're doing there.” (link)

Cats Illustrated’s Justin Rowland reports that the dispute over Kentucky’s NIL structure with JMI is being driven less by new contractual revelations than by competing internal narratives about how the model is functioning in practice. Administration- and JMI-aligned sources continue to argue the deal is structurally sound and consistent with UK’s longstanding multimedia approach. Meanwhile, Rowland notes that recent struggles, including basketball’s lack of early-period signees, have intensified questions about whether the fine print of the JMI arrangement is constraining NIL execution, even as UK and JMI maintain it does not block outside opportunities. Rowland also highlights the strategic upside argument made by supporters of the deal as one source pointed above-the-cap NIL deals that most SEC schools cannot replicate: “UK has been getting six figures as an appearance fee for the head coach to be in commercials. … There’s no reason that isn’t able to translate to players as well and that should all be above-the-cap deals for their players that gives Kentucky a major advantage.” Another adds: “The ability for JMI to upsell their current sponsors on the use of players through legitimate, above-the-cap NIL deals should be a major advantage to UK through JMI.” (link)

Former Nebraska Football HC/current UCF HC Scott Frost is suing Nebraska and its board of regents over a tax liability he claims he never received. The suit, filed in the District Court of Lancaster County, Nebraska, indicates that the school told him in December 2022, just months after he was fired, that it planned to “include the present value of its 2025 and 2026 liquidated damages payments.” Frost argues the move was not correct and that it created a $1.7M tax liability he did not receive. Frost also claims the payments were guaranteed, therefore were not able to be reduced, offset or forfeited. Frost is seeking no less than $5M. More. (link)

New OC John David Baker will earn $1M annually through 2027, with a $100K base salary increase beginning Feb. 1, 2027, plus performance incentives. A panel featuring Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, J.P. Morgan Executive Director Eric Menell, Davis Polk Partner Frank Azzopardi and Elevate College & Global Marketplace Chief Business Officer Jonathan Marks explored the escalating push for new capital models in college athletics amid rising costs, House-era revenue sharing, and pressures on Olympic and broad-based sports. Here are the keys…
➤ Bjork opened by calling this “the most transformational time in college athletics,” stressing that schools must examine every financial tool – including borrowing, fundraising, passive capital, or institutional investors – because “the answer is money; now what’s the question?” He also emphasized that governance, not valuation, ultimately derailed the Big Ten’s private equity exploration, contending that state-appointed boards, different governance structures, and the risk of ceding institutional authority made consensus impossible.
➤ Menell explained why private equity has been slow to enter the space despite widespread need – namely, investors look for control, efficiency, and profitable business units – conditions often incompatible with collegiate athletics, where you cannot “shut down” non-revenue sports or prioritize only the profitable ones.
➤ Marks emphasized capital alone is not a solution, but execution is. Many athletic departments lack commercial staff who can deploy capital effectively. Elevate’s preference, he said, is for debt-like structures with optional, not mandatory, exits, avoiding the risk of schools being forced into a buyout cycle that could “blow up the university.”
➤ As for whether the Utah deal opens the floodgates, all four panelists predicted more conversations but not an immediate wave of deals. They also agreed that the deal broke the psychological barrier, but the structural barriers – legal, financial, and cultural – remain extraordinarily high. Full discussion. (link)

Pathway Sports & Entertainment Founder/President Casey Schwab moderated a panel on thriving outside the Power 4 post-House with MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier, North Texas AD Jared Mosley and Grand Canyon AD Jamie Boggs. Here were the quartet’s most notable comments…
➤ Steinbrecher said MAC schools “aren’t rolling off a lot of plus revenue,” so revenue share is mostly about finding new dollars and donors while roster churn spikes. Steinbrecher pointed to Miami (OH) reaching a third-straight MAC title game with only five players back from last year’s title roster. Frazier explained that limited resources and a “pay-for-play” reality drove NIU’s move out of the MAC, describing the Mountain West move as “putting our football in the transfer portal” to find a more sustainable footing for its flagship program while keeping Olympic-sport travel and offerings manageable.
➤ Mosley described the current postseason as “frustrating” amid opt-outs and portal movement and argued G5 teams deserve on-field CFP access: “For people who want to point to results and say, ‘Hey, these games are going to be blowouts and they’re not competitive,’ there’s plenty of P4 versus P4 that aren’t competitive, so get over that.” Mosley added: “We’ve got a system, a bowl system now that some people say is working great because the viewership’s good. But I would argue the things we’re trying to do in growing fans on our campuses, it is a frustrating time to enjoy success because you walk into a bowl game after a year we’ve had, who knows how many opt-outs we’re going to have?”
➤ Meanwhile, Boggs views the House settlement as an opportunity for a fast-growing, football-free GCU, saying the university’s scale, Christian identity and free-market positioning have created strong corporate interest. Boggs also remarked that the Lopes budget to market-level NIL for targeted sports with growing viewership, even making the tough call to drop a nationally ranked men’s volleyball program that lacked brand/ROI upside to the club level. Head Coach Football Files… ➤ Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham plans to step down following the Utes’ appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 31, after 21 seasons at the helm. (link) ➤ Washington State will hire Missouri OC Kirby Moore to become the Cougars’ next football HC. (link) ➤ Former Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore has officially been charged with felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and breaking and entering. Efforts to overhaul NCAA men’s soccer may have received a boost from MLS’ recent decision to alter its schedule by moving its playoffs to the spring as part of a July-to-May season calendar switch, per Sportico’s Luke Cyphers, who adds the change “dovetails with reforms proposed by U.S. Soccer’s NextGen College Soccer Committee” which recommends “moving the men’s game, and perhaps the women’s, from the current fall-only schedule to one that covers the entire scholastic year and culminates in an April playoff festival.” New U.S. Soccer COO Dan Helfrich: “If the two calendars are in alignment, the late spring becomes a chance for a celebration of soccer in the U.S. And if the right people get together, which I think they will, and align planning and marketing and broadcasting and those types of things, you can have a ton of synergy with high-stakes, postseason soccer in the springtime. … If you lay all of the college calendars on top of one another, you see this really interesting window between the end of March Madness and the start of the spring postseason for lacrosse, softball and baseball in that second half of April, early May timeframe. We feel very confident that we can activate the college athletics fan in a way that galvanizes and grows soccer.” More. (link)

During its annual Fall Meetings, the Big West Board of Directors strongly affirmed their commitment to conference membership, while also ratifying the following statement: “We are committed to The Big West now and in the future. The Big West provides us the best opportunity to pursue academic and athletic excellence while making a positive impact in our community.” Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly: “Unity remains one of our greatest strengths, and through collaboration and shared purpose, we are well positioned to navigate change while continuing to advance opportunities for our student-athletes and institutions.” (link)

Omaha announces it will opt into the House settlement for the 2026-27 academic year as part of a multi-year plan to: institute Alston Award benefit distribution for the 2025-2026 academic year; increase the amount of scholarships and cost-of-attendance stipends for select revenue sports; and solidify institutional and third-party NIL logistics with strategic partners, including Opendorse, the Omaha Bull Market Collective, Learfield, and adidas. Wyoming has asked state lawmakers for an extra $3M-per-year, according to Cowboy State Daily’s Clair McFarland, who notes that’s “in addition to the $11.2M the UW Intercollegiate Athletics Program receives annually in state money through the school’s block grant, and a $5M yearly payout the state hinges on the department finding matching money” bringing the state's annual contribution to the program to approximately $19.2M. During this week’s meeting with the legislative Joint Appropriations Committee, UW AD Tom Burman said that while the department's total expense budget is about $53M, it’s not enough money facing economic inflation and House settlement expenses. Burman: “If we do not get the support that we are asking for, we will have to make some very difficult decisions. Some may define it as draconian cuts, which may include sport eliminations, scholarship eliminations, staffing reductions.” Those in turn would depress ticket sales and other marketing opportunities, said Burman, adding, “we are turning to all of our partners” for help, not just the state.
