Three weeks after conferences deployed the College Sports Commission’s “Participation Agreement” to their members – and a week past an original signing deadline – the answer to the question if all schools will sign the CSC’s document remains unclear. Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes “Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said he’s ‘confident’ that schools will sign a modified agreement – at some point. ‘It won’t happen overnight,’ he emphasized, but there will be ‘adjustments’ to the document that leaders believe will lead to 68 signatures. Will that really happen? There are plenty of doubters who believe that, no matter the changes, the document is dead. There are others … that are optimistic about it happening. … What’s interesting about all of this is that the document isn’t really necessary. … The participation agreement only adds ‘meat’ to the bones of the House settlement. Basically, the schools, in agreeing unanimously to the settlement, have already agreed to follow all of these rules. The participation agreement was only to reinforce those terms and prohibit schools from legal challenges over enforcement, which have in the past cratered the NCAA’s ability to enforce its rules and regulations. As it turns out, dozens of schools have already signed the agreement. But without all of them, the document is mostly moot.” More. (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie joined the JohnWallStreet Big Business on Campus podcast to discuss how the Demon Deacons play in the revenue space: “There's two ways to make a profit, … sell more product and manage expenses. Managing expenses is something I think we've done really well. We certainly did it at Kansas State, and we've done it here in optimizing return over those managed expenses. No matter how much money and revenue that you get, and increases in television contracts and all this kind of stuff, if you don't exercise some kind of discipline on the expense side, it's never enough. It’s like heroin. You just need more and more and more and more, and then eventually, it kills you. … We've been fortunate at Wake Forest, and I've been fortunate most of all, but there's a windfall, and then boom, they go spend it. I know what it costs per win in head coaching salary at Wake Forest this year, and it's less than a lot of other people. The ROI on cost per win is better at Wake Forest than it's for a lot of other people. There's different reasons for that.” Lots more from Currie. (link)

NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach reports Michigan had been altered prior to yesterday’s events that Football HC Sherrone Moore was dealing with mental health issues, adding that despite this knowledge, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel “fired him alone with no HR rep and no security present.” (link)

Bestselling author and Michigan historian John U. Bacon visited with FOX 2 Detroit’s Ryan Ermanni this morning to discuss the situation surrounding fired UM Football HC Sherrone Moore. On yesterday’s events that led to Moore’s firing: “[Moore] and this employee at the Michigan football building were investigated by the university this summer and both denied any relationship at that time. That story changed yesterday morning when she went [to the administration office] with the receipts.” More: “I guarantee the [Board of Regents] is working on those two issues, who knew what and when? I’ll say this much in defense of the university, they did have the investigation internally this summer and if both parties say there’s nothing happening, there’s not a lot else they can do other than respond to rumors. Now, they’ve brought in a Washington D.C. law firm … to investigate the entire department. … That is going to be a very serious report, external third-party, of course, and that will have a lot to say.” (link)

LSU inks an extension with Nike through 2036 to become its first Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program with 10 LSU student-athletes signing deals with the company. Nike EVP of Global Sports Marketing Ann Miller: “College sport is woven into Nike’s DNA, and we’ve always believed its future should be shaped in lockstep with athletes. Renewing our partnership with LSU and welcoming 10 new NIL athletes is about more than gear. It’s about collaboration, creativity and meaningful impact, giving athletes a platform to influence product, innovation, storytelling and culture. LSU and these athletes aren’t just representing Nike — they’re helping us redefine what partnership means in this new era of college sport. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams notes the company’s college sports strategy “mirrors a much broader return-to-basics approach for the $96B footwear giant.” More. (link, link, link)

Ole Miss has issued an RFP seeking a development partner (or team) for a mixed-use development project through a public-private partnership model on a long-term ground lease, to create an entertainment district on 25 acres surrounding Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick. The RFP outlines a 100-key, 30-condo condotel, at least 35K-square feet of retail and dining space, a half-acre plaza on the north side of the stadium, additional premium hospitality offerings inside the stadium, including 20 suites and at least 12.5K-square feet of flexible hospitality space, and roughly 50K-square feet of athletic department office space. The project will help Ole Miss take advantage of underutilized land adjacent to the stadium and improve the area’s aesthetics, which deteriorate in the space between The Grove tailgating area and the stadium itself. RFP responses are due Feb. 5, 2026, and the university intends to award April 23. Brailsford & Dunlavey is serving as Ole Miss’ development advisor. More. (link)

The 2028 L.A. Olympic and Paralympic Games could force USC to find a new football home for the 2028 campaign, most likely SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. Per The Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, “multiple people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to discuss it publicly told The Times that the Coliseum would not be ready for the start of college football season in September 2028 because of the $100M temporary track that’s being built on top of the Coliseum field to host the track-and-field competition. … A source said the school hasn’t officially determined whether the Coliseum field could be ready later in the fall, perhaps to host a portion of USC’s 2028 home schedule. But even if it is logistically possible, it’s not clear that USC’s athletic department would find that arrangement in its best interest, given it would mean uprooting the team midseason or spending a long stretch of the 2028 slate away from L.A.. … With the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games set for Aug. 27, 2028, there would be just two weeks for the temporary track to be removed and the grass field below to be restored ahead of USC’s currently scheduled 2028 home opener on Sept. 9. … That’s not a feasible timeline for a structure LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman once called ‘the most expensive and probably complicated thing we actually have to build’ ahead of the 2028 Games.” More. Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell sat down with SBJ’s Abe Madkour at the SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum yesterday and reiterated his position college athletics “has a money problem,” adding: “We have this very professionalized cost side where coaches and athletes are getting paid a bunch of money, but we have this disjointed, amateur model for generating revenue.” Campbell argued that the system is fundamentally undermonetized, noting that “the average FBS school had a $20M deficit” even before revenue sharing under the House settlement. Campbell acknowledged there’s been a learning curve associated with his increased involvement in college sports and said: “I’m not acting like I have all the solutions, but what I would like to do is create a legal framework and a platform that would allow those folks who are the experts to come together and find ways to make college sports financially sustainable.” Campbell endorses federal action and says that the general principles of the SCORE Act were well intended and that President Trump’s executive order is “an unfunded mandate,” adding: “There has to be one set of rules. It’s an interstate thing. How can we have a national championship without a consistent set of national rules?” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares some updates around College Football Playoff expansion, noting that ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips describes the rankings shows as “incredibly disruptive” and believes they cause “stress and friction” to the process. He adds: “I understand why they do the shows and it’s part of the agreement with ESPN, but it causes great anxiety throughout. We have to find a better way moving forward.” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says that commissioners have for years privately held discussions about limiting the shows. “They are maybe not the best thing for the enterprise itself. I think it’s a subject we should revisit and have a very direct conversation with our TV partner.” Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould believes there are two ways of looking at the shows: “On one hand, it creates a somewhat premature expectation about where teams are sitting. However, the positive is we are trying to grow college football’s brand. The fan engagement and interest and eyeballs, [the shows] do that. People watch it.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert joins the Helluva Podcast and calls Football HC Brent Key’s new contract a clear investment in competing at the highest level. Alpert traces it back to President Ángel Cabrera’s charge to build an athletic department that complements a world-class education and calls locking in Key “a no brainer,” noting three straight winning seasons and three straight bowls. The deal also codifies the Yellow Jackets’ continued investment in “player acquisition, player retention, revenue share above the cap strategy,” support staff and assistant coaches, and facilities like the new Fanning Center and the Bobby Dodd renovation. Alpert says Georgia Tech has set a goal of 5,000 new season ticket holders and ties that directly to sustaining a championship-level program: “We made our commitment to Coach and we’re asking folks to make their commitment and buy season tickets and come out and support.” (link)

Former Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore was in custody in the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday night as a suspect in an alleged assault, just hours after he was let go as the Wolverines HC. According to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel, Moore was initially detained by police in Saline, Michigan, on Wednesday and turned over to authorities in Pittsfield Township "for investigation into potential charges." Pittsfield police released a statement Wednesday night indicating they responded at 4:10 PM to a call "for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault. ... A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details." (link)

Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jacob Polacheck and Jack Pilgrim talked to “numerous sources across the college basketball and recruiting landscape over the past month to get answers on why Kentucky has yet to land a 2026 recruit” in men’s basketball and note the “answers display a wide range of issues, including JMI’s involvement, negative recruiting against Mark Pope, and emotions at the closing table.” Since extending its multimedia rights agreement with JMI earlier this year (for a reported $465M through 2040), Polacheck and Pilgrim note UK “has not landed a player on the recruiting trail and add that “JMI, in conjunction with the UK basketball staff, is requiring prospective student-athletes to sign away NIL rights that would normally be untouched at any other school. … Through [the JMI deal], athletes can broker deals with UK’s 200+ official partners, or try to find their own third-party deals; however, [AD] Mitch Barnhart himself admitted the latter may be trickier than the former, as the university strives to protect the brand.” One source tells them: “I will say that Kentucky is the only school I’ve dealt with that even has anything remotely like this in their contracts.” Another says: “We didn’t really get a hard number until it was late in the game. … I think they kind of knew what their number was, but they tried to save all their money, banking on getting Tyran [Stokes]. It pushed a lot of the other recruits away. You’re acting with us like you don’t know a number, but then other schools are telling us a number. You’re saying this space is so unknown, but how is it unknown when you have 10 other schools telling you a number, and one other school not telling you a number?” Lots more. (link)

Texas has issued an RFP seeking private developer(s) "to plan, design, construct, equip, finance and operate" a 6,000-seat volleyball arena and an adjacent student-athlete housing facility. The RFP states these two construction projects would have "minimal financial outlay from the University.” Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte: "This is a critical step for the future of Texas volleyball and our student-athletes' housing experience. It is about creating an experience that our student-athletes, coaches and passionate fans will be proud of in the heart of a district built for elite talent and entertainment." Horns247’s Chip Brown notes that “under the proposed public-private collaboration, UT would own both the new arena…as well as the student-athlete housing properties, and an outside entity would operate them.” (link); Take a look at renderings of the project. Charles Schwab Field Omaha recently partnered with Daktronics for the manufacturing and installation of five LED displays at the home of the annual Men’s College World Series. At 43.5 feet high by 60 feet wide, the two newly installed outfield displays are capable of variable content zoning to share a mixture of live video, instant replays, statistics, game information, graphics, animations, sponsorship messages and more. Along the seating fascia, a long, narrow ribbon display measuring nearly 4 feet high by 822 feet wide was installed to share additional statistics, graphics and sponsorship messages throughout events. Additionally, a double-sided marquee display was set-up outside the venue, measuring nearly 12 feet high by 20 feet wide to capture audiences’ attention and engage them before, during and after every event. With the recent expansion to include short-term workforce programs adding to existing structural funding problems, the Pell Grant program faces a 10-year shortfall of up to $97B, per the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. While this past summer’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act granted the program $10.5B in one-time funding in an effort to avoid a looming budget shortfall, it will only delay the inevitable by about two years. CRFB expects the Pell Grant program’s costs to exceed its funding by $6B to $11B each year over the next decade, noting: ”The underlying structural gap between costs and appropriations remains unaddressed, and in fact was made worse under OBBBA.” Per Higher Ed Dive’s Natalie Schwartz: “Researchers estimated the Pell Grant program would face a $61B, 10-year shortfall if lawmakers keep its appropriations adjusted for inflation and maintain the maximum award of $7,395. If lawmakers keep both appropriations and the maximum award flat, that shortfall would reach $88B. Moreover, the shortfall would hit $97B if lawmakers raise Pell Grant funding and the maximum award in line with inflation and Workforce Pell enrollment outpaces expectations.” (link)
