From the 2023 NACDA Convention: Texas A&M AD Bjork joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss NIL changes in the Lone Star State, Texas joining the SEC, the Aggies’ fundraising efforts, and what advice he would give to Group of 5 ADs navigating this transformational period in the industry. Given all the complexities of the current landscape, Bjork boils college sports’ future down to this: “What we have to come up with is a legally defensible collegiate model. Whatever that is. That we can defend legally, that we can defend in the court of public opinion, that we can defend in Congress, that we can defend in our state houses, that we can defend to Academics on our campus. How do we come up with that model? I think it’s our job to do it. We can’t say, ‘Oh, let somebody else figure it out.’ We need to be leaders in that. … So, I don’t predict the future other than to say whatever the future is, let’s get to it because we can’t sustain it much longer in terms of, sort of, this chaos.” The full conversation is now available on Connect. The Oklahoman’s Tramel advises Big 12 fans to prepare for the urban setting on which the Cincinnati campus sits, writing: “This place is urban. Not urban in the way the University of Texas is an oasis of sorts in the middle of Greater Austin’s 2.4M population. Not urban in the way the University of Houston is a modern, massive campus in the middle of Greater Houston’s 7.3M population. Urban in the way that neighborhoods and universities and even athletic facilities are fitted wherever they can go. Get ready, Big 12. You’re about to welcome a campus and a football experience unlike anything to which you’ve been accustomed.” Bearcats AD Cunningham tells Tramel: “We do have a tendency to build up (not out), having to go vertical. But it's also enclosed. … They’ve done a really remarkable job over the last 20 years, making it a true campus experience. This isn't a commuter campus, it has that collegiate feel.” (link)

Morehead State AD Wells sits down with the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Story, who asks the freshly minted Eagles AD about the plan to retain highly-successful Men’s Basketball HC Spradlin. Wells: “We are going to recruit him on a daily basis. That’s what we are going to do. (Spradlin) has just been an amazing, uplifting person as well as one of those campus-impact people who are just critical to what we are trying to do.” Now that Eastern Kentucky and Murray State have departed the OVC, the Eagles are left as the league’s only Kentucky program, but Wells believes the league remains a good fit. “We are a founding member of (the OVC), so I think we’ve got a strong position in terms of opportunity and leadership (in the league). My goal is for us to be the pinnacle of the league. When people think of the OVC, I want them to think of Morehead State.” More. (link)

CollegeAD has new Eastern Washington AD Collins’ new contract in Cheney at two years with annual base pay of $200K. A variety of academic & athletic achievements can earn Collins another $2K to $7K each. Also notable: “Should EWU part ways with Collins without cause, he would receive an amount equaling three months of his current salary as a buyout. Collins would owe the Eagles a $50K buyout if he were to leave for another AD position.” (link)

Nebraska AD Alberts is set to earn a $160K bonus for the Huskers finishing inside the top 30 in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings. The Huskers sit at 29th and are far enough ahead of Auburn and South Carolina that they can’t be overtaken in the final rankings. (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ McNeese State Men’s Basketball HC Wade joins the Field of 68 to discuss his journey back to coaching. In deciding to take the McNeese job, Wade says he talked to some other schools but felt a level of comfortability before adding: “By nature, I’m a risk-taker. It’s kind of how I roll. But I didn’t think in this situation it was smart to be risky, and I thought that coming to McNeese, an area I know, to work with an athletic director I’ve known for 15 years…it just made sense.” After climbing the ranks to LSU, Wade notes that “you want to have a little bit more purpose about you the second time around. … So, to be able to do something a little bit different, to try to raise an area up, to raise a school up – we’ve lost a lot of enrollment since the hurricanes and to try to use our basketball program to help drive enrollment in our five parish areas – there’s just a lot of stuff that I thought I could make an impact.” (link)

Michigan Senator McCann (D-Kalamazoo) has introduced legislation that would allow alcohol sales at college athletics venues. McCann yesterday remarked to the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee that by doing so, “patrons, we hope, would be less inclined to load up prior to the game knowing that they will have the option to obtain an alcoholic beverage upon entering the facility and through the duration of the game.” The bill has passed out of committee and will be considered by the full Senate. Disney may bid for the WWE’s broadcast rights, the New York Post’s Marchand reports, noting the cable broadcasts would likely be on FX rather than ESPN. Meanwhile, Marchand reports the WWE recently concluded its exclusive negotiating window with current rights holders Fox and Comcast and could not reach a new deal; however, Marchand points out that going to the open market is not uncommon and tabs Fox and Comcast as the favorites to retain the WWE’s rights. Fox currently pays $205M per year for Friday Night Smackdown, while Comcast pays $265M per year to air Monday Night Raw on USA. ESPN, per Marchand, can’t guarantee a night of the week to WWE thanks to their other programming commitments, which is why FX seems more likely to be the choice if Disney were to secure the rights. NCAA President Baker says a roadmap for a revamped NCAA will probably be done in July, Fox Sports’ Fischer reports from the 2023 NACDA Convention, adding that Baker also takes a “bit of a shot” at former President Emmert, remarking: “A lot of the time where I have these meetings, people say they've never spoken to the NCAA president before. I'm glad I could change that.” Baker also insists he is committed to advancing reform legislation through the NCAA committee structure alongside work with Congress. "As a former politician, I know there are a lot of people out here who believe it's always a mistake to ask politicians for help. … Success is a process, it doesn't happen overnight. The would-be regulators or the plaintiff attorneys don't know that's true or don't want to know it's true." Baker continues: “The main thing I've learned through all of these jobs, is no one is going to come and do it for you. … College sports has some serious issues that we need to address and deal with. And no one is going to do it for us." More from Fox Sports’ Fischer. (link); Baker, per SI’s Dellenger: “One group of legislative officials or a group of unelected officials can turn the tables on everything college sports is about and will be about in the future." On the prospect of student-athletes becoming employees, Baker insists: “I haven’t found one yet who wants to be (an employee). This would be a colossal mistake." (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger conducts a postmortem on last week’s meetings between college athletics stakeholders and federal lawmakers and offers this takeaway: “While [NCAA President] Baker’s plan is hopeful and optimistic, many lawmakers and college administrators say it is not realistic. There is public optimism, but there is private skepticism.” One SEC school official tells Dellenger: “We know we are going to have to make sacrifices, but how far we can go depends on how far they are willing to meet us. How do you craft something that can both pass and you can live with?” Dellenger says an updated copy of U.S. Congressman Bilirakis’ (R-FL) bill is “focused primarily on NIL, including several ‘athlete rights protections’ that many Democrat leaders would likely describe as unfair restrictions. One of the most significant restrictions: Athletes cannot sign NIL deals or sign with agents until 90 days after the athlete is first enrolled in school. Dellenger also obtained an unfinished copy of the bill being finalized by U.S. Senators Manchin (D-WV) and Tuberville (R-AL) and reports: “The bill would grant a great deal of power to the NCAA, create a medical trust for athlete health care, include athlete prohibitions, and, unlike many others, mentions booster-led NIL collectives by name. It also permits collectives assisting in recruiting and even providing “benefits” to athletes or parents as long as they are not for inducement purposes.” More from Dellenger. (link)

The ECAC names USHL Deputy Commissioner Christiansen as its next commissioner to succeed retiring commissioner Hagwell. Quinnipiac Deputy AD/SWA/Incoming ECAC Hockey Executive Committee Chair Fraser: “Doug impressed the Search Committee with his energy and plans to capitalize on the strengths of our league. He is well connected in the sport of hockey, and will be able to engage with external constituents as easily as he will with our coaches and administrators. His familiarity with ECAC Hockey and his previous involvement with the entire ecosystem of the sport will be a true benefit to our membership and student-athletes.” (link)

USF has also identified the funding sources that will be used to support the other $140M on the project, including cash advances on future capital gifts ($50M); the Capital Improvement Trust Fund ($31M); auxiliary funds and proceeds from a 2017 FCC auction ($34M); and contingent cash contribution from the sale of educational broadband service licenses ($25-40M). Iowa State has unveiled plans for a new indoor/outdoor tennis complex. ISU Research Park will purchase an existing four-court indoor tennis bubble, expand it to six courts and construct six new outdoor courts on the property. In addition, the Cyclones will construct a team building that will include a team room, locker room and training room. Pending Iowa Board of Regents approval in September, the completed facility will be leased to ISU Athletics. The six outdoor courts are scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2023 with the indoor court expansion and team facility slated for a fall 2024 completion. Cyclones AD Pollard: “We believe that this plan will allow us to build off our recent successes in a financially responsible manner while quickly addressing the program's facility shortcomings.” (link)

U.S. Integrity CEO Holt talks about how AthleteAlert, a tip line newly launched in partnership with RealResponse, can help combat harassment athletes face as gambling becomes legal in more states. “People can’t act because there isn’t data so U.S. Integrity is going to get that data on their dime with the help of AthleteAlert.” Holt also comments on the importance of getting support from coaches, ADs and campus CEOs. “If the presidents, chancellors, and ADs believe it’s a problem and that this is a viable solution and is helpful, they’re more likely to push the coaches to push it to the student-athletes. If coaches who experience this on a day-to-day basis know they have the support of the presidents, chancellors, and ADs, they’re more likely to push it downstream to the athletes and continue to reinvest that, ‘Hey, this is important. You should do this. If you see something, say something.” (link)

The Tennessee-focused Spyre Sports will launch a trade association for NIL collectives, On3’s Nakos reports. Spyre Co-Founder Clawson: “This isn’t about us necessarily, it’s about the student-athletes and about the collective voice getting a seat at the table. We’ve obviously, from day one, hit the ground running with our background and our experience. People are looking for someone to lead this. We were up for the challenge. It’s going to be a collective effort from a lot of different people doing a lot of different things, but we’re happy to get it started. … I think it only makes us better to share information, either share what we’re hearing or what they’re hearing.” (link)

Kentucky and Men’s Basketball HC Calipari are expected to introduce The LaFamilia Club, an NIL initiative which Calipari says isn’t a collective but rather a new fundraising model, which will tap the university’s biggest donors and the plethora of NBA stars UK has produced. Kentucky Sports Radio’s Pilgrim says the club was formed in January with “contributions doubling collectives at other programs. … In short, it’s a legitimate and legal way to raise money and pay student-athletes beyond traditional marketing avenues.” KSR Co-Founder Jones points out that for all intents and purposes it is a collective, but “I think the difference is it’s all going to be people that Cal knows. Regardless, it’s happening and I think the events of the summer made him decide people gotta give some money now–maybe the push was more in the last week or two. I think this is a really good development.” (link)
