NBC Sports President Rick Cordella confirms to The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch that the network is exploring a sale of its rights to the 2026 Big Ten Championship Game, characterizing the move as an "opportunity to do something that we feel is in our best interest financially." While Cordella stressed that NBC "loves" the conference, he noted that the company must "go through the process here and see what makes sense for us, for the league, for Fox, for whoever may license this." Though reports have identified Amazon as the primary suitor for a price tag around $70M, Cordella maintains no one is in the pole position. (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee has commented on QB Diego Pavia’s Instagram story in which he said "F-all the voters” following last weekend’s Heisman Trophy presentation. Lee: "Diego knows his actions were unacceptable and he has apologized. I know he is contrite and regrets the hurt he caused. He is a passionate and authentic competitor, and while his authenticity has been nurtured and celebrated here, it does not change the responsibility that comes with representing Vanderbilt University. We believe in growth and accountability, and we will continue to support Diego as he learns from this moment." Pavia also issued an apology: "I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. I have much love and respect for the Heisman voters and the selection process, and I apologize for being disrespectful. It was a mistake, and I am sorry." (link)

The San Diego State Campus Fee Advisory Committee has recommended a 41% increase to mandatory student athletic fees, a move that would raise the annual cost for enrollment from $580 to $820. The proposal, which passed via a 15-2 vote and is expected to be approved by President Adela de la Torre, utilizes an "alternative consultation" process rather than a student referendum and will be phased in over four years, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, who explains that under the amended recommendation, the athletics department will receive just under 90% of the new fee revenue – roughly $9M more annually for athletics – to help address a $29.1M operating deficit reported in FY24. Zeigler notes that student fees ($16.3M) were already the department’s single largest revenue source last fiscal year, ranking SDSU No. 1 in the Mountain West for student fee contribution by a "wide margin." Michigan Football Interim HC Biff Poggi says the situation following former HC Sherrone Moore’s departure is “unique and complicated," adding: “Multiple levels of complexity that our young people are dealing with, our university is dealing with, our athletic director, Warde Manuel, is dealing with and our team, our coaches and our kids. … It has been a tumultuous time. A lot of…first disbelief, then anger, then really, what we're in right now is the kids, quite frankly, feel very betrayed, and we're trying to work through that." (link)

Oregon State and Blueprint Sports have "mutually agreed" to terminate their partnership effective Dec. 8, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Per an OSU spokesperson, Blueprint will retain the $280K management fee already paid for the 2025-26 academic year but will forgo scheduled payments of roughly $572K for the subsequent two years. Additionally, Blueprint will transfer all net proceeds collected during its tenure to the university’s revenue-sharing account. Libit also notes the firm did not reach the $750K fundraising minimum required to trigger a bonus clause that would have awarded it 75% of revenues generated between that threshold and $1.15M. The termination, he adds, also effectively dismantles the Dam Nation Collective, which Blueprint had acquired but which no longer holds an official affiliation with the university. A statement from OSU reads, in part: “Moving forward, we will continue to pursue revenue sharing and NIL efforts within the department and through the OSU Foundation and Beaver Sports Properties. More details – including a possible new option for fans interested in membership subscriptions – will be forthcoming in the next few months." (link, link)

Extra Points’ Tim Casey examines the future of the Big 5 following Villanova's victory in the third annual Big 5 Classic tripleheader at the Wells Fargo Center, an event created to reinvigorate the historic Philadelphia basketball rivalry amid waning interest. While the format change, which expanded the group to six teams with the addition of Drexel, was designed to inject life into the series, ticket sales have declined annually, with this year's announced attendance of 10,361 representing less than 50% capacity and a drop from 15,215 in 2023. Financial disparities loom large as the schools navigate the post-House settlement landscape; Villanova's men's basketball program generated $17.6M in revenue in 2023-24, significantly outpacing peers like Temple ($7.5M) and Penn ($2.1M). With one year remaining on the contract with Comcast Spectacor, Saint Joseph’s AD Jill Bodensteiner acknowledges the economic reality necessitates constant review: "We’re in a very different place economically in college sports than we were three years ago or five years ago. I think it’s prudent for us to reevaluate consistently and determine whether it’s the best format and best thing for all of us." (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney interviews Players Era co-founder Seth Berger following the tournament's expansion from eight to 22 teams (18 men’s, four women’s) in 2025, which Berger says "absolutely exceeded our expectations." Berger confirms the men's event was profitable while the women's took a "slight loss.” Berger acknowledges critiques of the sterile atmosphere in NBA-sized arenas, telling Sweeney: “I did see that reported, and I don’t understand what that meant. ... So can we improve the atmosphere? Absolutely. One of the ways I think we could do that is do a better job of engaging the student bodies of these teams. So I think that’s something we’re trying to look towards in 2026 and beyond. But I think we can do everything better. We can improve the atmosphere, we can improve the format, we can improve the on-ground experience for the teams and the fans and everyone associated with Players Era." Berger notes the point-differential format used to determine the championship game was necessitated by the 18-team field and says the move to 32 teams allows for a "more simple and easily understandable" structure. With an anchor partnership granting automatic bids to eight Big 12 teams annually, Berger remains confident in the model despite the shifting revenue-sharing landscape, emphasizing: "We started Players Era to, first and foremost, support college basketball players and will continue to do so." Lots more. (link)

Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich provides the first update following today’s Patterson case hearing over the Vanderbilt Football student-athlete’s request to suspend the redshirt rule for football players ahead of the January transfer portal window, observing: “This is kind of a fascinating thing ... the NCAA has argued that the House settlement includes a provision saying that the NCAA can continue to create eligibility rules, so the NCAA has argued that bars these eligibility suits. But none of the courts hearing these eligibility cases (including cases the NCAA has won) have agreed with the NCAA on this point. Eligibility rules weren't at issue in House, so they can't be released. So I'm guessing Judge Campbell is just doing his due diligence? We'll see.” The Big 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten & Pac-12 commissioners – those named in the House settlement – prepared for the hearing by filing a sworn statement to a Tennessee federal court in support of the NCAA’s current eligibility rules. Per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, the NCAA also sent a memo out to membership on Monday noting ‘there is no request for broader preliminary injunctive relief on behalf of all DI student-athletes and the court is not expected to address eligibility for any other student-athlete.’” (link, link, link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart addressed reports that UK restricts student-athletes to JMI-affiliated partners and acknowledged to UK Sports Network’s Tom Leach a preference for protecting corporate sponsors: "We do ask that we look at that and say, ‘Hey, is there a space for them to be able to work with our partners first?’ … I don’t think there’s a person out there that would disagree with, ‘Hey, if I’m working with someone really closely, I want to make sure we can do a good job of protecting them if we can.’” However, Barnhart clarified athletes "absolutely have the opportunity" to pursue outside deals if JMI inventory isn't a fit, though potentially without university marks. Barnhart pushed back on the notion UK’s model is an outlier or hinders competitiveness, noting "there is no one size fits all" and stating: "Why in the world would we do anything but give ourselves the best chance to do [win]?" Regarding the House settlement, Barnhart cautioned the industry remains in a "learning phase" as conferences have yet to sign participation agreements, while stressing the distinction between the $20.5M revenue sharing cap and third-party NIL: "Everybody wants to throw it in one bucket – NIL. That’s not it... You have the revenue share piece... then how that worked with money prior to July 1 and then post-July 1, there’s lots of moving pieces. … So yes, our conversations with our coaches have been very dynamic. We try and be very fluid about how we’re doing that. Being able to be nimble about how we adapt to our rosters and the people who are coming and going and working that cap space incredibly well. We’ve got two people that are on our staff doing that at a high level. So we’re very pleased with how we’re operating in the functions of that day-to-day.” More. (link)

Virginia Tech receives the largest gift in its athletic department’s history, an anonymous $20M commitment, to help advance the university’s Invest to Win strategy to better position teams to compete at the highest level. VT President Tim Sands: “Doing more with less, while a testament to the talent of our staff and student athletes, is no longer an option. Invest to Win is about winning championships. Excellence in athletics complements our academic mission, elevates our impact, and inspires the passion and generosity of Hokie Nation, as demonstrated by this record gift.” (link)

Mixed-use projects at North Carolina, Ole Miss and Texas highlight the challenges behind college design, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the Tar Heels plan to issue an RFP in January seeking a master developer for Carolina North, a development first publicly mentioned back in 2008 that could serve as a potential landing spot for a new UNC Basketball arena. McCormick: “An update given to the UNC Board of Trustees’ University Affairs committee in mid-November noted that the Carolina North funding mix will vary by project, but it could include public-private partnerships in addition to fully university-funded efforts. … Whether the Carolina North project includes an arena or not, the developer RFQ/RFP will draw major interest. … At Ole Miss, the stadium-adjacent project proposal is more standard college-athletics development fare, but a few similarities between the Carolina North project and what Texas proposed — a new, small-scale arena and athlete student housing, both next to Moody Center — jump out to me. Both RFPs include (potential) sports venues and some basic mixed-use real estate elements (retail, for example). But both also include student housing, which is a distinct developer skillset and market, and in UNC’s case, the university wants to create an entirely new section of campus. North Carolina’s campus is idyllic. It’s also 236 years old. Will UNC find a developer or team of developers interested in and capable of taking on that kind of project while also proficient in navigating the public university realm (and all its incumbent intricacies)?” More. DeKalb County (AL) judge Andrew Hairston has granted a preliminary injunction requested by former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt seeking to prevent the NCAA from enforcing its six-year "show cause" order. Per Bama247’s Mike Rodak: “Pruitt's attorneys argued for the court to grant the injunction because the NCAA's penalties -- the basis of the lawsuit -- were preventing high-level college teams from hiring him. … NCAA attorneys argued against Pruitt's injunction, stating that DeKalb County … did not have jurisdiction over its infractions matters, and that the court should ‘not interfere with or second-guess the internal affairs and decisions of athletics associations.’ The NCAA also argued that Pruitt did not need the injunction because the organization had already granted Jacksonville State's request to hire him, and NCAA managing director Matt Mikrut further stated in an affidavit earlier this month that no other school had contacted the Committee on Infractions about hiring Pruitt. NCAA attorneys also attempted to dismiss Pruitt's original lawsuit, but Hairston last week denied that request. Hairston wrote the court had jurisdiction over the case because ‘the NCAA has inserted itself into Alabama’ by limiting Pruitt's ability to work for NCAA-member schools in the state.” More. (link)

Beginning with conference play, the Atlantic 10 will launch a player availability reporting system to publicly update the status of each league player on its website a few hours prior to each A-10 contest. Through the system, players will be classified as “available,” “questionable,” or “out” with schools subject to fines for misrepresenting a player’s status. Per the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor, “the player availability reporting system that leagues implement is designed to protect players from bettors who might go through team members to learn information about the physical condition of players who are known to be injured to some extent, and gain knowledge about any injuries that are unknown publicly. … The A-10 initiative mimics what Power Four football leagues did this year regarding player availability.” The Power Four leagues and the Big East also started the practice for basketball this season, while the NCAA will do the same for its 2026 men’s & women’s tournaments. The move is a reactionary measure to the proliferation of legal sports gambling in recent years. (link)

Grand Canyon’s status as a non-profit institution of higher education has been formally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, bringing the ED’s classification into alignment with every other governmental and accrediting authority that previously affirmed GCU’s status. Grand Canyon President Brian Mueller: “This decision removes the cloud of confusion over our nonprofit status and allows us to put our complete focus and resources on our mission to provide affordable, Christian higher education to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are excited to move forward with clarity and purpose.” The decision is expected to unlock benefits for students and the institution including: expanded access to private scholarships restricted to students at nonprofit institutions; increased access to partnerships with school districts, hospitals, donors and organizations previously hesitant due to uncertainty around GCU’s status; eligibility for future government relief funds and benefits, which have been disproportionately distributed to nonprofit over for-profit institutions; access to ED-recognized nonprofit-specific grant funding; solidification of GCU’s standing as a voting member of NCAA Athletics; and significant reduction in legal expenses associated with defending GCU’s lawful status, which has cost the university millions of dollars per year.
