Our sincerest condolences go out to the family, friends and professional colleagues of former Big 8 Commissioner and National Football Foundation Board of Trustees Emeritus Chuck Neinas, who passed away today at the age of 93. (link)

The Big 12’s pursuit of a partnership with investment firms RedBird and Weatherford Capital underscores the league’s “innovative efforts to try to close its revenue gap with college sports’ richest conferences, the SEC and Big Ten,” per The Dallas Morning News’ Eric Prisbell, who observes “the Big 12 is not merely alive, but succeeding financially with a philosophy its executives say is uniquely suited for a college sports era defined by historic upheaval.” Commissioner Brett Yormark: “That is why we’re a different league. We’re willing to take calculated risks, break boundaries when appropriate and push the envelope a little bit — all in an effort to create value for our membership.” Chief Brand and Business Officer Tyrel Kirkham: “No knock on anyone else, we truly feel like we operate differently, and that’s our point of differentiation. We aren’t going to go with the status quo of what’s always been done. We actually want to flip what has always been done on its head. To challenge the status quo, I think that’s our superpower.” (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter joined Brad Logan on the Bleav in Ole Miss podcast. Here are Carter’s comments on future plans for Vaught-Hemingway Stadium…
➤ “We're looking for ideas to come in to do some really cool things with the north end zone, kind of starting there as a phase one, but it could extend over to the west side, the east side. We're going to get the RFPs in, see what ideas are there. … We want to increase capacity. … I feel like our stadium size is in line with what we need, but we do need to be a little bigger. We need some more student seats. We need some more premium seating. We'd love to get that capacity up over 70K if we could, which I think would be great. … An entertainment district that's going to have some mixed use and retail space and new athletic offices. … But along with that is kind of a refurbishment of the stadium. Our stadium is incredible when there's 65K people in there and you've got the light show and the fireworks, but you go in there on a normal day and it's starting to be a little dated.”
➤ “We had to take a step back from that for a couple of years as we kind of figured out and navigated the NIL space and what all that was going to look like leading into rev share. But now we feel like we've got a pretty good handle on what that's going to look like.”
➤ “There's a lot of private dollars on the sidelines right now and a lot of people who are very interested in getting involved in college athletics. For us, we're still exploring some of the private equity piece of that, like you saw at Utah and maybe with the Big Ten and some things there, but the private investment for these projects and the public-private partnership, we think that that's a really good way to move forward, especially with some of the larger projects like the stadium.” Lots more from Carter. News of Utah’s recent private equity deal with Otro Capital appears to have reignited the conversation among federal lawmakers over Congressional legislation to block schools from entering into such deals tied to athletic programs, per the Deseret News’ Cami Mondeaux. Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT), a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, pointed to current NIL and revenue-sharing rules as putting “serious strain” on college athletics by “placing new and unsustainable burdens on programs that were never designed to operate this way.” Owens: ‘Athletic programs are striving to meet the moment and looking for solutions to avert financial disaster, which will damage the sports and the student-athletes they support.” Mondeaux: “Owens noted there are other ways to address those concerns, including through the … SCORE Act. That bill would guarantee students’ rights to sign …NIL agreements, without restrictions from their schools or athletic organizations. … [Utah] administrators defended the decision, arguing the university needs to be innovative in order to avoid raising student fees, cutting research funds or eliminating some or all athletic programs.” (link)

The ACC has unveiled its 2026 football schedule with Commissioner Jim Phillips noting: “Transitioning to a nine-game conference schedule strengthens our competitive framework, aligns us with the other Power Four conferences and provides greater consistency for our student-athletes, coaches and fans. This phased approach reflects our commitment to competitive equity, scheduling flexibility and delivering a premier football product across all 17 institutions.” The league will also update its tiebreaker policy before next season. Clemson hopes it has secured footing in the NIL space through its partnership with Everett Sports Marketing, with the firm having already located commercial NIL deals for a couple dozen Tiger student-athletes over the first three months of the arrangement. Per The Post and Courier’s Jon Blau, the Tigers’ partnership with ESM is exclusive, preventing the agency from similar deals with other schools in Georgia or South Carolina, although it can work with individual athletes at those institutions if they pay for representation. ESM Partner/NIL Athlete Strategy Jeff Hoffman: “What's great about the Clemson partnership is you always have an ongoing Rolodex of talent that should fit just about any brand need” with the school offering 500-plus athletes as "micro-media talent. … The media exposure is just as important to Clemson, for people to say NIL is real here, and it's real good.” Blau adds that Clemson has another advantage as it controls its own multimedia rights: “Clemson can extract more dollars from sponsors — for example, Coca-Cola or Nike — because the university not only has direct control of advertising space in its venues but can also offer ‘talent’ represented in-house. … [Additionally] if the ‘clearinghouse’ in the House settlement fails, and booster-funded collectives continue to throw gobs of money at athletes, ESM promises to be a unique bullet in Clemson's NIL presentation to recruits.” Hoffman: “You're either going to have a cap or you're going to have collectives. What Clemson's identified is that ESM provides them real commercial deals they would need regardless, that give them an advantage regardless.” (link)

Department of Education officially recognizes nonprofit status of Grand Canyon University
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has formally recognized GCU's status as a nonprofit institution of higher education, marking a significant milestone for the largest Christian university in the country.
GCU was founded as a nonprofit institution in 1949 and operated as such until 2004 when financial hardships required the university to take on an investor to avoid closing its doors. Gaining access to public capital sparked significant growth over the next decade, and in 2018 GCU lawfully and transparently returned to its historical nonprofit roots. ED’s long-awaited recognition resolves years of confusion created by conflicting classifications.

NBC Sports President Rick Cordella confirms to The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch that the network is exploring a sale of its rights to the 2026 Big Ten Championship Game, characterizing the move as an "opportunity to do something that we feel is in our best interest financially." While Cordella stressed that NBC "loves" the conference, he noted that the company must "go through the process here and see what makes sense for us, for the league, for Fox, for whoever may license this." Though reports have identified Amazon as the primary suitor for a price tag around $70M, Cordella maintains no one is in the pole position. (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee has commented on QB Diego Pavia’s Instagram story in which he said "F-all the voters” following last weekend’s Heisman Trophy presentation. Lee: "Diego knows his actions were unacceptable and he has apologized. I know he is contrite and regrets the hurt he caused. He is a passionate and authentic competitor, and while his authenticity has been nurtured and celebrated here, it does not change the responsibility that comes with representing Vanderbilt University. We believe in growth and accountability, and we will continue to support Diego as he learns from this moment." Pavia also issued an apology: "I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. I have much love and respect for the Heisman voters and the selection process, and I apologize for being disrespectful. It was a mistake, and I am sorry." (link)

The San Diego State Campus Fee Advisory Committee has recommended a 41% increase to mandatory student athletic fees, a move that would raise the annual cost for enrollment from $580 to $820. The proposal, which passed via a 15-2 vote and is expected to be approved by President Adela de la Torre, utilizes an "alternative consultation" process rather than a student referendum and will be phased in over four years, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, who explains that under the amended recommendation, the athletics department will receive just under 90% of the new fee revenue – roughly $9M more annually for athletics – to help address a $29.1M operating deficit reported in FY24. Zeigler notes that student fees ($16.3M) were already the department’s single largest revenue source last fiscal year, ranking SDSU No. 1 in the Mountain West for student fee contribution by a "wide margin." Michigan Football Interim HC Biff Poggi says the situation following former HC Sherrone Moore’s departure is “unique and complicated," adding: “Multiple levels of complexity that our young people are dealing with, our university is dealing with, our athletic director, Warde Manuel, is dealing with and our team, our coaches and our kids. … It has been a tumultuous time. A lot of…first disbelief, then anger, then really, what we're in right now is the kids, quite frankly, feel very betrayed, and we're trying to work through that." (link)

Oregon State and Blueprint Sports have "mutually agreed" to terminate their partnership effective Dec. 8, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Per an OSU spokesperson, Blueprint will retain the $280K management fee already paid for the 2025-26 academic year but will forgo scheduled payments of roughly $572K for the subsequent two years. Additionally, Blueprint will transfer all net proceeds collected during its tenure to the university’s revenue-sharing account. Libit also notes the firm did not reach the $750K fundraising minimum required to trigger a bonus clause that would have awarded it 75% of revenues generated between that threshold and $1.15M. The termination, he adds, also effectively dismantles the Dam Nation Collective, which Blueprint had acquired but which no longer holds an official affiliation with the university. A statement from OSU reads, in part: “Moving forward, we will continue to pursue revenue sharing and NIL efforts within the department and through the OSU Foundation and Beaver Sports Properties. More details – including a possible new option for fans interested in membership subscriptions – will be forthcoming in the next few months." (link, link)

Extra Points’ Tim Casey examines the future of the Big 5 following Villanova's victory in the third annual Big 5 Classic tripleheader at the Wells Fargo Center, an event created to reinvigorate the historic Philadelphia basketball rivalry amid waning interest. While the format change, which expanded the group to six teams with the addition of Drexel, was designed to inject life into the series, ticket sales have declined annually, with this year's announced attendance of 10,361 representing less than 50% capacity and a drop from 15,215 in 2023. Financial disparities loom large as the schools navigate the post-House settlement landscape; Villanova's men's basketball program generated $17.6M in revenue in 2023-24, significantly outpacing peers like Temple ($7.5M) and Penn ($2.1M). With one year remaining on the contract with Comcast Spectacor, Saint Joseph’s AD Jill Bodensteiner acknowledges the economic reality necessitates constant review: "We’re in a very different place economically in college sports than we were three years ago or five years ago. I think it’s prudent for us to reevaluate consistently and determine whether it’s the best format and best thing for all of us." (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney interviews Players Era co-founder Seth Berger following the tournament's expansion from eight to 22 teams (18 men’s, four women’s) in 2025, which Berger says "absolutely exceeded our expectations." Berger confirms the men's event was profitable while the women's took a "slight loss.” Berger acknowledges critiques of the sterile atmosphere in NBA-sized arenas, telling Sweeney: “I did see that reported, and I don’t understand what that meant. ... So can we improve the atmosphere? Absolutely. One of the ways I think we could do that is do a better job of engaging the student bodies of these teams. So I think that’s something we’re trying to look towards in 2026 and beyond. But I think we can do everything better. We can improve the atmosphere, we can improve the format, we can improve the on-ground experience for the teams and the fans and everyone associated with Players Era." Berger notes the point-differential format used to determine the championship game was necessitated by the 18-team field and says the move to 32 teams allows for a "more simple and easily understandable" structure. With an anchor partnership granting automatic bids to eight Big 12 teams annually, Berger remains confident in the model despite the shifting revenue-sharing landscape, emphasizing: "We started Players Era to, first and foremost, support college basketball players and will continue to do so." Lots more. (link)
