Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger examines the "unusual situation" of two non-power programs making the College Football Playoff field and notes that under the MOU signed last spring, such a scenario will be contractually prevented starting next year. Specifically, the future format guarantees berths to the champions of the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC, plus the highest-ranked non-power champion, meaning Duke would have displaced James Madison under next year's rules. Additionally, the MOU grants Notre Dame an automatic berth if ranked in the top 12, a provision that would have placed the Irish in the field over Miami (FL) this year, as reported previously. Meanwhile, Dellenger notes the current underdog success is driving significant business as Tulane donor contributions are up 373% YoY from mid-November to mid-December, and local retailer Campus Connection has received nearly 3K orders for "RMFW" (Roll MF Wave) apparel, including one purchased by American Commissioner Tim Pernetti to wear on the sideline in Oxford. (link); Tulane AD David Harris states the Green Wave received $1.68M in donations over the last month, thanks in part to an 83% jump in donors from the same time last year. (link)

Kalshi made headlines after notifying the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that it was self-certifying markets on whether college athletes will enter the transfer portal. The announcement drew a sharp rebuke from NCAA President Charlie Baker, who explained in a statement to ESPN’s David Purdum: "The NCAA vehemently opposes college sports prediction markets. It is already bad enough that student-athletes face harassment and abuse for lost bets on game performance, and now Kalshi wants to offer bets on their transfer decisions and status. This is absolutely unacceptable and would place even greater pressure on student-athletes while threatening competition integrity and recruiting processes. Their decisions and future should not be gambled with, especially in an unregulated marketplace that does not follow any rules of legitimate sports betting operators." (link)

Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder notes that “after the backlash reached a fever pitch and went viral across college sports, Kalshi issued a statement that said they are not planning to go live with transfer portal markets at this time, via ESPN’s David Purdum.” A statement from Kalshi to Purdum reads: “We certify markets all the time that we do not end up listing; despite our competitors having these markets live, we have no immediate plans to list these contracts.” (link)

Michigan Interim President Domenico Grasso pledged to leave “no stone unturned” in the Jenner & Block investigation into former Football HC Sherrone Moore’s conduct and the athletic department culture writ large, asserting in a video message: "We will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that conduct like this does not happen again…and any further action we take will be based on credible evidence and findings, developed through a rigorous investigation. If the university learns of information through this investigation or otherwise that warrants a termination of any employee, we will act swiftly, just as we did in the case of Coach Moore. I ask that you keep an open mind and allow investigators to do their work and not make assumptions. I commit to doing the same.” In regards to Moore’s replacement, Grasso says: “We will hire an individual who is of the highest moral character and who will serve as a role model and a respected leader for the entire football program. And who will, with dignity and integrity, be a fierce competitor." Full message. (link)

More from Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart with the Lexington Herald-Leader's Jon Hale. On if navigating the last two years changed his retirement thinking one way or another: “The focus certainly has changed. I can say when I first started as an AD, you spent 75% of your time worrying about competition, 25% worried about the other stuff. I would argue it’s flipped. You spend a great majority of your time worrying about the enterprise of sport and how we sustain it. … Don’t hold me to the percentages, but it has changed a little bit, where you’re spending a great deal of time in the nuances of the day-to-day. … The personal touches have changed a little bit … because it’s so transient. When 35 or 40% of your student-athletes are new to your program every year, that part of just getting to know everybody has changed. …, I still love competing. You still get that feeling when you come out and are getting ready to start a game, whatever that game is. I think the day that changes a little bit is probably the time for someone else to do that.” (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wolken in response to Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz’s comments on the unsustainable trajectory of college football, submits: “Everyone in college sports knows the solution, they just don’t have the stomach (yet) to execute it. Until then, there’s no point indulging the complaints.” Tennessee AD Danny White retweeted Wolken’s comment, adding: “This. There is a pathway to build a much healthier environment for college athletics within the current laws of our country – it’s called collective bargaining. It will be complicated, hard, and likely not perfect, but it’s far past time that we roll up our sleeves and do the work.” (link)

The State’s Jordan Kaye speaks with South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati about navigating the new revenue-sharing landscape and says he’s skeptical when he hears reports of roster investments exceeding $25M-$30M via outside NIL opportunities. "It’s not as easy as it was last year when you could just pay the players. Right now, we’re doing a fresh share. So I think when you see these media reports — I think people are planning to do that, just as we are planning to do something similar. But when you actually talk to these schools, none of the money has been deployed. So we’re keeping our plans a little close to the vest because we do have a plan.” Despite the hard cap, Donati reveals that agent demands are actually increasing: “The conversations we’ve had with other agents, the cost, the price, the salary is double, triple, quadruple (what it was last year). That’s why you hear about this over-the-cap [NIL]. The problem with the over-the-cap [dollars] is those are real. The pay for play is now taken by the rev share.” (link)

Indiana AD Scott Dolson sent a survey to fans soliciting feedback on potential future enhancements to Memorial Stadium, building on renovations initiated after a similar 2023 survey that led to new premium seating options (East Side Club, Field Level Suites) and a concessions partnership with Levy. The survey, which asks for input on "key fan experience areas" and the surrounding environment, comes amidst a historic season for the Hoosiers that includes a Big Ten title, a Heisman winner, and a No. 1 ranking entering the Rose Bowl. Dolson emphasized the strategic importance of the feedback, noting: "In doing so, you play a pivotal role in helping the program continue to compete at an elite level!" (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte addressed the Longhorns' exclusion from the College Football Playoff field despite a strength of schedule that included five games against Top 25 opponents, telling the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls that while the program intends to honor upcoming series against Ohio State (2026) and Michigan (2027), future non-conference scheduling, including a 2028-29 series with Notre Dame, may need to be reevaluated. Del Conte warned: "I do not want to see you water down your regular-season schedule so much because you’re just trying to get into the postseason tournament. … We love having great games, but if you’re going to be punished for playing those games, that’s a struggle." The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) presented its strategic white paper on the future of the sport at its 2025 Annual Convention, outlining priorities such as simplifying rules to improve media accessibility and establishing a unified championship weekend for Divisions I, II, and III by 2027, a move the NCAA has reportedly taken "public meaningful steps" toward realizing. Developed with CarrSports Consulting, the framework garnered endorsement from ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus, who noted: "The findings in this White Paper come at a pivotal moment for intercollegiate women’s lacrosse. As media executives, we’re always looking for compelling sports content that can expand our audiences, and these proposed changes directly address the barriers we’ve seen to expanding coverage. A more streamlined game format would make women’s lacrosse significantly more accessible to casual viewers. When you reduce complexity and create a fast-paced product, you open the door to the kind of storytelling and audience engagement that drives viewership.” Lots more on the sport’s direction & momentum. Green Bay Men’s Basketball HC Doug Gottlieb is stepping away from his national radio show to focus on his HC role. He explains that “these kids [are owed] a fully dedicated coach. I know I’m fully dedicated. … And if there is any ounce of lack of preparation or any ounce of fatigue – this is going to sound crazy – but last week we go down to (IU) Indy and because of the timing of my show the bus had to leave without me and I flew. And I don’t think that’s what I want to do as a coach. I’ll still be doing podcasts and iHeart has been amazing about it. So we’ll transition to a different version of it. ... It’s going to obviously be a bit of a financial hit and I’ll work through it. I’ve been blessed beyond all measure. But The Doug Gottlieb Show on radio in the afternoon as of now, we’re going to take a break from it. I’ve got to have a life. I’ve got to be here for those kids. And I’ve got to really dig in because we’re building something cool here.” (link)

New Texas Women’s Soccer HC Margueritte Bates has agreed to a six-year deal that will pay her an annual salary of $350K, according to the Austin American-Statesman's Danny Davis, who notes UT “will also pay the buyout on a UCLA deal that ran through at least January 2028. (Former Horns HC) Angela Kelly was making $227K on a deal that had three years left.” (link)

The 2025 version of the annual Army-Navy game proved to be a ratings boon for CBS, averaging 7.84M viewers to rank as the network’s most-watched game of the season, well ahead of runner-up Indiana-Oregon (5.59M). Overall, the contest’s rating was down 17% YoY from a record 9.4M viewers in 2024, but was up from 2023 and marked the second most-watched edition of the game since 2018. (link)

The FCS quarterfinals delivered the round's highest viewership since 2011, averaging 1.4M viewers across three broadcasts on ABC and ESPN, marking a 34% YoY increase. According to Hero Sports’ Sam Herder, the South Dakota at Montana matchup on ABC led the slate with 1.9M viewers, marking the most-watched FCS quarterfinal game since 2016, while Villanova at Tarleton State on ESPN averaged 1.5M viewers (+61% YoY). Additionally, Herder notes the Celebration Bowl averaged 2.3M viewers, its largest audience since 2022. (link)

NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach reports that for the second consecutive year, two College Football Playoff first-round games will go head-to-head with NFL regular-season matchups, a conflict CFP Executive Director Rich Clark says both sides worked to mitigate by tweaking kickoff times. The college games (Ole Miss-Tulane at 3:30pm ET and Oregon-James Madison at 7:30pm ET) have been moved up 30 minutes while the NFL kickoffs shifted back, creating a 90-minute standalone window for the first CFP contest. Clark, who met multiple times with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Media EVP/COO Hans Schroeder, acknowledged the NFL has long occupied this specific Saturday window and noted: "We realize that the NFL has been playing on that Saturday for a long time. Our initial talks were to see how we could de-conflict. … We met probably three times to try to figure out a way to work through it, and this was, I think, the best we could do." Looking ahead, Clark suggested a more drastic solution, such as moving the entire CFP first round up one week to the second weekend of December, is "not off the table," though such a move would conflict with the Army-Navy game and shorten the recovery window between conference championships and the playoff. Clark also notes the commissioners and presidents prefer to keep the current two-week break between conference championship games and the first round for players’ health and safety reasons, but that leaders “will look at it and evaluate it as they do every year.” (link)

Inner Circle Sports is building out an advisory practice to assist schools in evaluating their options, pricing their assets, evaluating risk and, if needed, framing negotiations as private equity funds work their way into college sports. Former Stanford AD Bernard Muir, who was recently hired by the firm, remarks: “The world has changed so dramatically. If I was still sitting in that chair, it would be nice to have an advisor with no dog in the fight who is sitting on my shoulder to help assess the opportunities at hand.” Former George Mason Deputy AD for Capital Planning and Strategic Initiatives Andrew Lieber, who is leading the new strategy alongside Muir: “There’s nuance regarding how any sort of capital acquisition and deployment plays on your balance sheet and credit rating. You could be a Moody’s school, you could be an S&P school, you could be a Fitch school, and even within those, you could be treated differently. It requires someone to work with campus to identify debt coverage ratios and capacity for debt, and applying that to various forms of capital.” Muir: “Although we don’t know the nuances of the Utah or Big 12 deals, we’re all talking the same language now, and we can cite what they’re trying to do. It’s accelerating the conversation.” More. (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart responds to the Lexington Herald-Leader's Jon Hale on reports he’s nearing retirement: “I love competing. … I love this place with all my heart. We came here [in] 2002, planning on staying six-to-eight years and stayed a lot longer. I know there’s people that get frustrated because I’ve been here a long time and that’s ok. I sense that. … We love Kentucky. I get up, invigorated about what we’re doing at work. I love watching our kids compete. When that day comes, I don’t know, I’ll sit down with my family and we’ll talk and determine what’s best for our family and for me, but most importantly, what’s best for Kentucky. And, you know, I’ve got two-and-a-half years left of my contract and the ambassador clause is out there. It can go anytime after December 31st, and if that’s something that’s best for this University, then we’ll have that conversation.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen joins the Nebraska Athletics AD Show alongside Associate AD for Administration Jonathan Bateman to discuss the department's pivot in the post-House settlement landscape, confirming the wind-down of the 1890 Initiative collective in favor of a revised multimedia rights deal with Playfly Sports. Bateman describes the strategic shift as necessary because the settlement "dictated a smaller range of operationalization for what collectives can do," forcing the department to bring revenue-sharing operations in-house to manage the $20.5M cap while leveraging Playfly to facilitate “above the cap” third-party deals. Dannen emphasizes that this new model allows Nebraska to finally capitalize on its financial strength, explaining: “Go back [to] the late ‘90s. The vision was to build the west tower and have suites, which really put us in a financial position that nobody else is in even to this day. The rules never allowed us to take advantage of that financial position. Today the rules allow us to take advantage of that. So that the whole deal with Playfly, the diverting of money to our bottom line and moving it directly to the athlete, that's only possible because of the vision from 20 and 30 years ago of what we did to get into a financial position to sustain that.” (link)

North Texas Football season ticket holders are facing modest price increases for some of the desirable areas of DATCU Stadium in 2026, per the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, who notes prices in sections 104-106 (sections with chairbacks behind UNT’s bench) will rise from $450 to $475, while “Family Zone” tickets in sections 201-202 and 211-212 will jump from $80 to $100. UNT Deputy AD for Revenue Generation/CRO Charley Thrash: “The majority of our stadium pricing remains unchanged from last season. We did make targeted adjustments in a few of our highest-demand areas, including the family zone as well as the priority chairback sections. We feel this pricing model will allow us to remain competitive and keep the momentum going into 2026.” The school’s push to increase revenue from tickets comes in the wake of UNT students voting against an increase in their athletics fee this fall. Southern Football HC Marshall Faulk’s new three-year deal allows him to earn 20% of any new fundraising revenue he helps generate for the university, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who adds that Faulk would also be permitted to direct half of the newly-raised funds to the football program, contingent on the team meeting NCAA academic and eligibility standards. Libit: “The agreement stipulates that on Dec. 15 of each year, Faulk will be provided an annual report showing the private donations, earmarked for football, to the Southern University System Foundation. He would then receive payment for all incentives, including performance, within 45 days.” Faulk’s three-year contract also includes “a wide array of performance incentives tied to on-field success and ticket revenue benchmarks. Bonuses are available for achievements such as defeating an FBS opponent. If the university sells more than $1M in tickets, Faulk would get an extra $10K; if it sells between $750K and $1M, he would get $5K.” (link)
