More from NCAA President Charlie Baker with Tulane Sports Law Professor Gabe Feldman. On what the NCAA wants to be able to do but can’t without some limited antitrust exemption: “The primary issue for us is really around what I would describe as sort of eligibility. And when I talk eligibility, I'm not just talking five years to play four, I'm also talking academic eligibility. I mean, we've had judges basically throw out academic eligibility in some of these cases that we've been in court on. … If we get to the point where grades don't matter anymore for anybody who's playing college sports, I think that's a problem. … I think the federal preemption around a lot of the state laws, which really are just naked attempts by states to create special advantages for the schools in their own state and competing, that's not just an NCAA issue. That's a conference issue as well. … To me, the big issue with the transfer thing is do you really want kids transferring every year? … We have a lot of that now because they can. And again, if you get rid of the academic rules and you get rid of the eligibility rules generally, then you've completely divorced the whole idea that getting a degree matters or figuring out what it is you want to do with the rest of your life matters. Even for the kids who play in the 5% of the very top end of college sports, the vast majority of them are not going to play professionally, and we are not doing them a favor by pretending that their college degree is meaningless.” (link)

Regarding the stalled Big Ten Enterprises proposal, Washington President Robert Jones tells On Montlake publisher Christian Caple the concept is "absolutely brilliant" and framed the current pause as "taking two steps back to move 20 steps forward." He strongly disputed the characterization of the deal as private equity, stating: "Let me be fundamentally clear. One of the biggest disappointments in all of this from where I sit is the media — and I’m just going to call it — got it wrong, and continue to report a framework that was antithetical to the model we were trying to move forward with. It was not private equity, but they chose to continue to talk about it in that way, I believe, because when you use that word, for many people it’s unsettling. But it’s unfortunate there was so much misinformation initially and continually in this regard. That was an opportunity to report on the factual elements of this and how it was going to be good for all of our student-athletes across the Big Ten.” In regards to the reported tiered payout component of the UC Investments structure that placed Washington in the third tier, Jones declined to comment on specifics but noted he was "very, very comfortable with where this would have put the University of Washington." Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger examines the challenge some College Football Playoff coaches are facing while balancing multiple jobs and a “wonky” calendar. At James Madison, outgoing HC/new UCLA HC Bob Chesney is preparing the Dukes to face Oregon this weekend in CFP First Round action, while new JMU HC Billy Napier and his staff are working on setting up next year’s squad – scouting players, assembling a staff and examining the transfer portal. JMU AD Matt Roan: “The three of us – me, Bob and Billy – have an agreement that the most important thing is the 2025 team. We are proving you can work together for the betterment of a team and program. Now, is it awkward? Yeah, there is an awkwardness to it, but we’ve handled it as good as we could have. What’s the alternative?” Dellenger: “So, what is the solution to all of this? How do you stop the madness of teams preparing for some of the biggest games in school history while juggling coaching staff hirings and firings and player re-signings?” Ohio State AD Ross Bjork: “I don’t feel comfortable saying, ‘Here’s the answer!’ … Everybody is doing what they should be. Every commissioner is fighting for the membership they lead. Many times, those are cross purposes. There isn’t centralized decision-making. Could you get to a point where that is the case? I think so. But I’m not naive to know that a lot of the pain we’re going through right now is ultimately necessary to get where you want to go.” More. (link)

CollegeAD reports on the particulars of North Texas AD Jared Mosley’s contract extension, which runs through 2030 and sets his Year 1 base salary at $725K, with annual $25K increases and a yearly $100K retention bonus paid each December 15. The deal also includes performance incentives worth up to 20% of his base salary for achievements in team success, academics, fundraising, and attendance, subject to Board of Regents approval. Mosley, who joined UNT in 2016 and was elevated to AD in 2022, can earn nearly $1M annually with bonuses. (link)

ESPN will air the Heisman Trophy ceremony for at least the next six years as part of a new agreement signed this week. Puck’s John Ourand provides context: “It’s not an especially big deal—ESPN will carry the event, announce the finalists, and produce shoulder programming. But the extension shows the value of longstanding relationships in the industry: ESPN has carried the ceremony since 1994, and Chris Fowler has hosted every year. Neither side was eager to end this relationship, especially after Saturday’s show posted 4.3M viewers on ABC.” Ourand adds Heisman Trust CEO Jeff Price handled the negotiations on his side, and IMG’s Hillary Mandel advised the Heisman Trust. Southeast Missouri State has directed the University to prepare to bid phase two of its Houck Field project. Construction documents are slated to wrap in early March at which point the project will be put out for full bid. Received bids will then be reviewed in late March with all information shared with the Board of Governors for consideration in April. At that time, the board will decide whether to proceed with awarding a contract. SEMO AD Brady Barke: “While this does not guarantee the project will move forward, finalizing construction documents and putting the project out for bid will allow us to better determine the actual cost of the project, while we continue our work identifying funding sources.” (link)

Boston University has pledged to enhance its athlete orientation and coach training following an external review by law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King that was commissioned after alumni raised allegations of misconduct within the women's soccer program. The review, which included surveys of athletes from the classes of 2024 to 2028, praised BU's existing policies as "robust" but recommended clearer procedures for reporting misconduct. The inquiry was sparked by allegations against former HC Casey Brown and her predecessor Nancy Feldman. (link)

In the hyper-nomadic world of college athletics, the coach takes the job, but the spouse often takes on the chaos. In more than 70% of relocations, the spouse is the project manager who bears the brunt of the administrative burden: coordinating movers, selling the old house, finding schools, and managing the emotional toll—all while the coach is immersed in their new role. D1.relocation understands this critical imbalance. The organization doesn't just move boxes; it empowers the spouse. The dedicated Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) acts as the spouse's advocate, providing specialized support for everything from decluttering and home staging to school vetting and amenity setup. D1.relocation ensures the entire family transitions from one chapter to the next with minimal stress and maximum support. (link)

Law firm Hogan Lovells will merge with Wall Street stalwart Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft to create a new $3.6B megafirm with over 3,000 lawyers, making it the legal industry's "largest ever" tie-up, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Erin Mulvaney. The combined entity, Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, will rank as the fifth-largest global law firm by revenue, a move designed to bolster Hogan's competitiveness in the critical New York market while stabilizing Cadwalader following recent partner departures. Hogan CEO Miguel Zaldivar Jr. will lead the new firm, with partners expected to vote to finalize the merger next year. (link)

Win Reality has acquired tracking data provider Yakkertech from Magnus Sports for an undisclosed amount, paving the way for a new "SmartParks" offering launching in 2026, SBJ’s Joe Lemire reports. By integrating Yakkertech's camera-based ball flight and biomechanics tracking with Win Reality's VR training and Blast Motion sensor data, Win Reality CEO Chris O'Dowd aims to create a unified platform connecting practice to in-game performance, telling Lemire: “We’ve historically had training products where we have no input into how it translates into the game. What’s happening in the game should be personalizing your training programming. SmartParks has that connectivity between on-field performance and training for a really nice growth loop around player advancement.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker joins Tulane Sports Law Professor Gabe Feldman on the SportsWise podcast and shared his perspective on the potential benefit of amending the Sports Broadcasting Act: “I just don't think that's what would happen if we opened up the Sports Broadcasting Act. It hasn't been open since the 60’s in large part because people in Washington don't know what would happen if it got opened, and I don't blame them for being nervous about that. If you think about the kinds of organizations who would have an interest in that, they're some of the biggest and most powerful entities in America. You're talking about Amazon and Apple and Google and the NFL and Paramount. I mean, there's some people there with a lot of throwaway, and that all by itself, I think, makes everybody a little nervous about what would actually happen if it were to be opened up. I think the second piece is merely opening it up and giving people the ability to bundle doesn't really do much unless you're willing to dramatically alter the schedule. When people talk about this and they talk about leverage, you can't talk about leverage unless you're willing to talk about the calendar, right? Because who people play is what ultimately is the issue that drives viewership. It's not how many people are part of the universe, it's who do they play and what day do they play them on, and what does the schedule on the calendar actually look like? And I think that's a much more challenging issue and a much bigger question than just opening up the Sports Broadcasting Act.” Lots more from Baker. (link)

As more departments spin-off revenue generating assets into new ventures, Michigan State trustees are pumping the brakes on the Spartans’ new Spartan Ventures. Trustee Mike Balow told The Detroit News’ Nolan Finley: “I don't object to trying to put MSU on par with other schools. My concern is control. I still haven't seen any of the documents to ensure we won't be leaving the university vulnerable. … The risk to the university is years down the road, when the shares change hands. We wouldn't want to have a partner who, say, is involved in sports betting.” Finley reports Michigan State boosters Greg and Dawn Williams, who invested $100M of their recent $401M commitment to buy in to Spartan Media Ventures, will reportedly receive an 11% stake and “ultimately be able to draw distributions from that investment or sell their stake after a minimum holding period for a guaranteed return. That makes them partners with the university, and not just donors. And it creates different expectations for a return on investment.” (link)

ESPN’s sublicensing of additional College Football Playoff games to TNT Sports beginning next season is part of an effort to avoid pitting CFP match-ups against the NFL whenever possible. That includes this Saturday’s Miami (FL)-Texas A&M match-up, which is slated for an 11 a.m. CT kick-off to avoid the NFL during the late afternoon and evening broadcast windows. Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts: “Would a night game at Kyle Field be great? Sure. We would have fired up the drones! But it’s a reality. You’re going to have both pro and college football and NBA, all of them, in various windows several nights a week. I wasn’t surprised. Texas A&M-Miami should do well, and putting that in a standalone window for college football is great. It’s a reality of where we are. You don’t run from it.” More. (link)

Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli believes bowl game operators would support the creation of a Group of 6 playoff featuring the American, CUSA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 and Sun Belt, per Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey. Carparelli: “We’re in constant dialogue with all the conferences and the consistent message is: We are here to serve the game of college football, like we have for a long, long time. So, if the Group of 6 were to want to put together a series of bowl games that determine some type of champion, in their group, we would be excited to be a part of that conversation.” Meetings between the 10 FBS conferences and Bowl Season execs about the 2026 landscape and beyond will take place sometime after the Jan. 20 CFP national championship game. Inside Higher Ed sat down with U.S. Council on Athletes’ Health (USCAH) President and CEO/Big Ten CMO Jim Borchers to discuss the growing threat presented by gambling in collegiate sports. On examples of the impact he’s seen gambling have on student-athletes: “This whole financial marketplace now exists in college athletics—even high school athletics now has NIL payments—and so sport as a financial vehicle is growing, and these markets are growing, and that causes them stress. Young athletes are developing physically and mentally. Do we expect them to have a skill set to manage that financial stress like an adult, or the experiences and the ability to develop that skill set? I think it is misguided. You add into that the pressure of outside influences who now have their own financial market where they’re making these bets and providing those bets. And they can make comments to that person directly either on social media or direct messaging. It’s easy for me as a 55-year-old to say, “I’ll just turn my phone off,” but that’s not how these folks operate. It impacts their mental and emotional health, and that impacts their performance. We know athletes have to be physically, mentally and emotionally well to perform at their best.” More from Borchers. (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert visited with 680 The Fan’s Cellini & Dimino to discuss two major gifts for the Yellow Jackets: “We had two anonymous families step forward and make individual $10M gifts, investment into the vision. We talked about investing in the future of Georgia Tech athletics. Fourteen months ago we launched the Full Steam Ahead campaign, a $500M fundraising campaign to invest in what the future of winning looks like at Georgia Tech, and so we're over $90M on the way to that $500M goal. Today, we'll announce formally that two families stepped up and have invested $10M each. So a total of $20M. And again success breeds success and I think that, you know, we don't want this to be a one-year, 9-3 [football record]. We want to continue to have comprehensive excellence. And so what does it take? It takes resources and building a plan. Excited about our future.” More from Alpert. (link)

New records show former Ohio Football HC Brian Smith participated in a four-month relationship with an undergraduate student, which served as part of the reasons outlined by the University in firing Smith for-cause. According to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming, as part of a Dec. 12 notice letter, Ohio President Lori Gonzalez cited the University’s reasons in terminating Smith for-cause, including: “Participation in extramarital affairs, including one with an undergraduate student, to which you have admitted; Repeated use of alcohol in your office, in violation of university policy; and a public appearance during which you smelled strongly of alcohol and were intoxicated in your demeanor.” Smith’s attorney Rex H. Elilott admits Smith was dating a student, which did not violate school policy, after he began to divorce his wife and denied claims Smith was “inebriated at an OU event.” (link)

Chicago State has received board approval to add football starting next season, with the Cougars to compete in 2026 as an independent before joining the NEC in 2027. President Zaldwaynaka Scott: “The launch of football at Chicago State ushers in a new era not only for our university, but for the entire city of Chicago. As the city's only NCAA Division I football program, we are creating history and building a legacy that will inspire pride, opportunity, and community for generations to come.
