Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich and Ben Horney unpack some specifics of the Big 12's pending agreement with Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS). In exchange for up to roughly $30M per member who opts in and a $25M investment in Big 12 Properties, CAS would earn a percentage of conference revenue (capped at 15%) only if specific thresholds are met, while schools taking the $30M would see a portion of their future conference distributions withheld by CAS rather than paying back a loan with interest. Additionally, CAS would receive a 10% commission on any revenue-generating deals it facilitates, the option to take equity stakes in new joint ventures, and a potential $2.5M annual retainer fee through 2031. Notably, the partnership would grant the Big 12 exclusivity, preventing RedBird from offering similar deals to other power conferences. Christovich and Horney add: “What changed between [the summer of 2024] and now was equity, according to one source. Earlier versions of the proposal had involved offering some kind of equity stake in the conference and/or schools, the source said, which seemed to be a nonstarter for some schools. But this fall, the conference and the firms put together a new proposal that didn’t require the Big 12 or any schools to give up equity stakes in subsidiaries of their athletic department assets. The current proposal was only shared with athletic directors last week, though conference and university officials have been working on it for months, another source said.” (link)

In the second part of a Q&A between Ohio State AD Ross Bjork and former Columbus Dispatch contributor Bill Rabinowitz, Bjork offers the latest update on the Big Ten’s stalled private equity deal: “We still had a long way to go before we would get to an approval phase of it. A lot of times, people just focus on the money. But the governance of how it’s structured in the future — What does grant of rights mean? What do voting parameters mean? What does equity mean? What does Big Ten Enterprises mean? — there were a lot of things that still had to get flushed out. … We’ve got to probably take a deep breath and get through the holidays. Maybe we’ll see where it’s at the beginning of the year.” Asked if Ohio State would consider doing a PE deal on its own like Utah: “The same questions apply. Ohio State has the biggest brand in college sports, the biggest TV viewership, the biggest revenue, the biggest sponsorship portfolio. We get a lot of incoming inquiries about, hey, would you have a conversation? We’re curious about those conversations, but we haven’t entertained anything. We could because it’s Ohio State, but to me you have to be very careful about the governance as much as you do the finances. So if we looked at something, it would be very strategic, it would be very high level, it would have high impact. We just haven’t found anything that would be meaningful from that standpoint.” More from Bjork. (link)

Texas tops CNBC’s Official College Sports Valuations Top 75 list of the most valuable college athletic programs for 2025 having climbed 16% YoY from 2024 to a valuation of $1.48B, while pulling in aggregate revenue of $332M, more than any other school and 23% more than in the previous year, per the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database. Last year’s most valuable program, Ohio State, dropped to the second spot with a valuation of $1.35B, 2% more than last year, after seeing program revenue decline by 9% to $255M in FY24 due to a 20% decrease in ticket revenue resulting from the Buckeyes having hosted two fewer football home games. Texas A&M ($1.32B valuation/2024 revenue of $266M), Georgia ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $242M) and Michigan ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $239M) rounded out CNBC’s top five. Combined, the top 75 athletic programs on the list are worth a combined $51.22B, 13% more than the value in last year’s rankings, with FY24 aggregate revenue of $11.84B, 8% more than last year. Also of note, Oregon State is the highest valued non-Power 4 school coming in at No. 61 ($440M valuation/2024 revenue of $120M). Complete list. (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione “promises that his staff is doing everything in their power to create an environment the likes of which has never been seen in Norman” for tonight’s College Football Playoff First Round match-up against Alabama, per The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson, who notes that while they’re constrained some by CFP regulations for what host schools can do, they’re still aiming high. Castiglione: “We have some huge surprises planned for (Friday night), but there are many variables that have to fall into place for them to happen, including weather. … We’ve tried to go deep in the bag of tricks to find special ways to create a magical moment for everybody. … We need to have our fans show up early. We’d love to have them in their seats about 45 minutes before kick because there’s a lot – we’re going to keep some of it a surprise – but there’s a lot that’s going to unfold. … The idea of hosting what truly is the biggest game ever in our stadium and in our state, you don’t need the hyperbole to hype it up. It just hypes itself. Add two of the true iconic programs in the history of college football to go with it? It’s just dripping with metaphors and pageantry and excitement and anticipation.” More. Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joins the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to dive into the current CFP set-up and if there’s a need for a Group of 6 playoff: “The reality is that without the strength of schedule, without some of the metrics that are now being evaluated, eye test included, it's going to be really tough for institutions that do not have a certain schedule or play against ranked opponents to be able to get access to that playoff. So henceforth, there's a need for a playoff structure or another way to reward those institutions to play for a championship. And I do like the fact, and I still stand by it, that having some type of situation where you have the G6 and you have an ability to play really good teams against each other with a natural feed into the college football playoff. That was the plan that I talked about. … It's going to be tougher with these mega-conferences, especially in the big two that we have, the SEC and the Big Ten, who are able to schedule those high-ranked opponents to even get a chance to knock them off are going to be more difficult. … Until we have some type of standardized way to evaluate all college football programs, you're going to have to go and be able to knock off the big boys and specifically in the Big Ten and the SEC. And the only way you can do that is providing inventory and financial wherewithal to get there.” More from Frazier. (link)

The cost to attend this year’s College Football Playoff First Round is running much lower than last year, according to Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey, who notes every game is already sold out. The most expensive get-in resale ticket price is $237 for Saturday’s Miami (FL)-Texas A&M contest at Kyle Field, while Tulane-Ole Miss will set you back $190, Alabama-Oklahoma runs $168 and James Madison-Oregon costs just $63. Last December, “the cheapest resale tickets for Indiana-Notre Dame were more than $900, while Clemson-Texas and Tennessee-Ohio State each topped $300. This weekend’s games feature two Group of 6 visiting opponents in Tulane and JMU, and they don’t have the benefit of the massive fan bases that Notre Dame, Texas, and Ohio State carried last year. Ticket prices for last season’s CFP quarterfinal matchups, played at traditional New Year’s Six bowl sites, were substantially lower than the first round. The get-in price for the Rose Bowl was nearly $200, but the cheapest seats for the other three games all cost less than $40.” More. (link)

Opsis Architecture Principal Chris Roberts shares with SBJ the vision behind the design of the new North End Zone experience at Boise State’s Albertson Stadium as well as how the transformation is taking shape ahead of the 2026 campaign: “We’re wrapping up construction here. It’ll be ready for the 2026 season. It’s going to provide a whole new atmosphere and not just for sort of pre-seating options in the north end zone, but connecting both concourses on the east and west side. So, you’ll have 360 navigation of the facility, a lot of really cool opportunities for the [general admission] experience. … You know, gone are the days where it’s just simply providing seats and you’re trying to get as many people in the stadium. It’s really about addressing different modes and ways of experiencing a game. Some people are very tuned in and really want to be a part of the action. Other people just want to be a part of the event. So, there’s a lot of other opportunities there in terms of, maybe it’s not about having the perfect seat but it’s about being there and taking in the atmosphere and providing just opportunities for everybody. What we've been trying to do is create those opportunities that resonate with individuals and the way that they want to participate or experience the atmosphere.” (link)

Memphis men’s basketball student-athlete Aaron Bradshaw has reportedly had more than $20K withheld from his NIL compensation because of multiple team-rule violations, per The Daily Helmsman’s Sam Shoemaker, who notes Bradshaw hasn’t been “charged” with anything but the money has been retained from his monthly pay. During ESPN’s call of Memphis' Wednesday night loss to Vanderbilt, network analyst Dane Bradshaw paraphrased Tigers HC Penny Hardaway as saying: “I fined him for being late. I fined him for violating our dress code, three grand here, three grand there. Guess who started to show up early? Guess who started to put effort in?” Per the broadcast, Bradshaw’s withheld compensation will be distributed among the rest of the team. (link)

CNBC: “[Chew] notes that they have signed the agreement and he notes that the U.S. joint venture will be half-held … by a consortium of new investors including Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX with 15% each, 30.1% held by affiliates of certain existing investors of ByteDance and 19.9% retained by ByteDance.” The U.S. joint venture is expected to oversee data protection, algorithm security, content moderation and software assurance. More from NCAA President Charlie Baker with Tulane Sports Law Professor Gabe Feldman. On what the NCAA wants to be able to do but can’t without some limited antitrust exemption: “The primary issue for us is really around what I would describe as sort of eligibility. And when I talk eligibility, I'm not just talking five years to play four, I'm also talking academic eligibility. I mean, we've had judges basically throw out academic eligibility in some of these cases that we've been in court on. … If we get to the point where grades don't matter anymore for anybody who's playing college sports, I think that's a problem. … I think the federal preemption around a lot of the state laws, which really are just naked attempts by states to create special advantages for the schools in their own state and competing, that's not just an NCAA issue. That's a conference issue as well. … To me, the big issue with the transfer thing is do you really want kids transferring every year? … We have a lot of that now because they can. And again, if you get rid of the academic rules and you get rid of the eligibility rules generally, then you've completely divorced the whole idea that getting a degree matters or figuring out what it is you want to do with the rest of your life matters. Even for the kids who play in the 5% of the very top end of college sports, the vast majority of them are not going to play professionally, and we are not doing them a favor by pretending that their college degree is meaningless.” (link)

Regarding the stalled Big Ten Enterprises proposal, Washington President Robert Jones tells On Montlake publisher Christian Caple the concept is "absolutely brilliant" and framed the current pause as "taking two steps back to move 20 steps forward." He strongly disputed the characterization of the deal as private equity, stating: "Let me be fundamentally clear. One of the biggest disappointments in all of this from where I sit is the media — and I’m just going to call it — got it wrong, and continue to report a framework that was antithetical to the model we were trying to move forward with. It was not private equity, but they chose to continue to talk about it in that way, I believe, because when you use that word, for many people it’s unsettling. But it’s unfortunate there was so much misinformation initially and continually in this regard. That was an opportunity to report on the factual elements of this and how it was going to be good for all of our student-athletes across the Big Ten.” In regards to the reported tiered payout component of the UC Investments structure that placed Washington in the third tier, Jones declined to comment on specifics but noted he was "very, very comfortable with where this would have put the University of Washington." Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger examines the challenge some College Football Playoff coaches are facing while balancing multiple jobs and a “wonky” calendar. At James Madison, outgoing HC/new UCLA HC Bob Chesney is preparing the Dukes to face Oregon this weekend in CFP First Round action, while new JMU HC Billy Napier and his staff are working on setting up next year’s squad – scouting players, assembling a staff and examining the transfer portal. JMU AD Matt Roan: “The three of us – me, Bob and Billy – have an agreement that the most important thing is the 2025 team. We are proving you can work together for the betterment of a team and program. Now, is it awkward? Yeah, there is an awkwardness to it, but we’ve handled it as good as we could have. What’s the alternative?” Dellenger: “So, what is the solution to all of this? How do you stop the madness of teams preparing for some of the biggest games in school history while juggling coaching staff hirings and firings and player re-signings?” Ohio State AD Ross Bjork: “I don’t feel comfortable saying, ‘Here’s the answer!’ … Everybody is doing what they should be. Every commissioner is fighting for the membership they lead. Many times, those are cross purposes. There isn’t centralized decision-making. Could you get to a point where that is the case? I think so. But I’m not naive to know that a lot of the pain we’re going through right now is ultimately necessary to get where you want to go.” More. (link)

The deal also includes performance incentives worth up to 20% of his base salary for achievements in team success, academics, fundraising, and attendance, subject to Board of Regents approval. ESPN will air the Heisman Trophy ceremony for at least the next six years as part of a new agreement signed this week. Puck’s John Ourand provides context: “It’s not an especially big deal—ESPN will carry the event, announce the finalists, and produce shoulder programming. But the extension shows the value of longstanding relationships in the industry: ESPN has carried the ceremony since 1994, and Chris Fowler has hosted every year. Neither side was eager to end this relationship, especially after Saturday’s show posted 4.3M viewers on ABC.” Ourand adds Heisman Trust CEO Jeff Price handled the negotiations on his side, and IMG’s Hillary Mandel advised the Heisman Trust. Southeast Missouri State has directed the University to prepare to bid phase two of its Houck Field project. Construction documents are slated to wrap in early March at which point the project will be put out for full bid. Received bids will then be reviewed in late March with all information shared with the Board of Governors for consideration in April. At that time, the board will decide whether to proceed with awarding a contract. SEMO AD Brady Barke: “While this does not guarantee the project will move forward, finalizing construction documents and putting the project out for bid will allow us to better determine the actual cost of the project, while we continue our work identifying funding sources.” (link)

The inquiry was sparked by allegations against former HC Casey Brown and her predecessor Nancy Feldman. (link)

In the hyper-nomadic world of college athletics, the coach takes the job, but the spouse often takes on the chaos. In more than 70% of relocations, the spouse is the project manager who bears the brunt of the administrative burden: coordinating movers, selling the old house, finding schools, and managing the emotional toll—all while the coach is immersed in their new role. D1.relocation understands this critical imbalance. The organization doesn't just move boxes; it empowers the spouse. The dedicated Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) acts as the spouse's advocate, providing specialized support for everything from decluttering and home staging to school vetting and amenity setup. D1.relocation ensures the entire family transitions from one chapter to the next with minimal stress and maximum support. (link)

Win Reality has acquired tracking data provider Yakkertech from Magnus Sports for an undisclosed amount, paving the way for a new "SmartParks" offering launching in 2026, SBJ’s Joe Lemire reports. By integrating Yakkertech's camera-based ball flight and biomechanics tracking with Win Reality's VR training and Blast Motion sensor data, Win Reality CEO Chris O'Dowd aims to create a unified platform connecting practice to in-game performance, telling Lemire: “We’ve historically had training products where we have no input into how it translates into the game. What’s happening in the game should be personalizing your training programming. SmartParks has that connectivity between on-field performance and training for a really nice growth loop around player advancement.” (link)
