Ohio State AD Ross Bjork continues with high-profile Buckeyes beat writer Bill Rabinowitz, argues for reworking the football calendar to move spring practice back to the summer to align with an academic calendar: “If we ever want to say we’re anything about academics, we need to match up the player roster building back to the academic calendar. If we allow the summer access - the OTA model or whatever you want to call it - that would eliminate the need to have these guys on campus in January (as early enrollee freshmen). The only reason the portal is where it’s at is so people can build their roster to have spring practice.” Also of note from Bjork on the topic: “This is actually an easy fix with the calendar if everybody kind of puts their silo down and does what’s best for the game. But we sort of put up these barriers because we all try to protect our competitive side. If we really thought about it and laid it all out and said, ‘Here’s the training and playing season and here’s the roster-building season,’ we could figure this out.” (link)

Army West Point and Navy aren’t immune to the current chaos running rampant throughout college sports, where the biggest spenders often earn the biggest reward, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes it’s up to new first-year service academy ADs, Army’s Tom Theodorakis and Navy’s Michael Kelly, to steer their programs through rough waters. Theodorakis: “Revenue is important. We don’t shy away from that.” Beyond apparel deals and the tradition-inspired uniforms synonymous with the Army-Navy game, the academies are leveraging the avenues one would expect from modern athletic departments intent on driving revenue. Navy has long run its sponsorship sales and multimedia rights in-house, providing flexibility and control over its internal strategy when trying to monetize assets. Army, meanwhile, recently signed a 10-year renewal with Learfield, which has had a working relationship with the academy since 2005. That deal notably dovetails with the ongoing $175M renovation of Michie Stadium’s east side.” Theodorakis: “Some schools, honestly, have an identity crisis about who they are and how they’re allocating resources. What’s special about Army and Navy is we know who we are.” More. (link)

Pacific President/WCC President’s Council Chair Chris Callahan appreciates the positive ways men’s basketball is currently trending throughout the league, remarking: “When you look at the basketball-centric conferences, I feel like we’re right there. Investing in the facilities is really critical and I think it’s been a long time coming for a lot of these schools.” WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson is also encouraged by the commitment league schools are showing toward improving hoops facilities: “Many student-athletes in this new world of college basketball are focused on revenue benefits, but if you don’t have those facilities and amenities, you really can’t become part of the conversation. So, it helps tremendously to see the way our schools are investing overall.” Callahan: “I’m just so proud of this conference in large part because we’ve leaned into who we are. I came from Power Four schools. It’s very different. Here, in a high-quality mid-major without football, we can really focus more on the student-athlete experience, on the fan experience, and on all of our sports but particularly on basketball. It’s really exciting to see.” More. (link)

Writing for NIL Wire, KC Smurthwaite examines the factors that led to UC San Diego’s jump to the West Coast Conference, noting the league committed to $10M in total payments to the Tritons, “a figure that dwarfs what conferences typically pay low and mid-major schools in realignment.” Per the deal, UC San Diego was to receive a $4M payment within 10 days of full execution, contingent on UCSD formally notifying the Big West of its departure effective June 30, 2027, as well as three annual payments of $1.5M through 2029-30 and three additional annual payments of $500K through 2032-33. The league also completely waived its standard entry fee. Instead of paying an equity buy-in, UCSD will receive the conference payment, an arrangement explicitly justified by the Tritons’ transition costs and anticipated contributions to the league. One sitting AD in California said: “This wasn’t a panic move, but it was close. The WCC membership was growing anxious, almost teetering on angry, as other conferences were being proactive. They had to do something, especially with some Gonzaga money still in the coffers.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen penned a letter to Cornhuskers fans & provided some hard data on volleyball’s secondary ticket market value: “Unique to the strong volleyball interest at Nebraska, 10% of current season-ticket holders did not use their tickets this year but rather sold those tickets through secondary markets. Those tickets, originally purchased for a total of $600,000 by those ticket holders, were then resold for a total of $3.2M on the secondary market. As we indicated last year, ticket use for this purpose is strictly prohibited. The accounts that resold the entirety of their tickets will be excluded from the ability to purchase season-tickets in 2026.” Dannen also notes the impact of alcohol sales at new venues alongside the new partnership with Aramark: “More than 313K alcoholic beverages were served and new food options were added to the menu, resulting in an increase of 75% in total concession revenue compared to last year. The introduction of alcohol sales came with concerns about the impact on fan behavior, but it remained consistent with the previous five years.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the paydays for quarterbacks in the college market could reach up to $5M for a single season, noting that the top QBs entering the 2026 transfer portal are TCU’s Josh Hoover, Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt, Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby and Florida’s DJ Lagway, with Miami (FL), LSU and maybe Oregon also on the hunt for a new QB. F is for Friday. From fly fishing to FIFA fumbling, the Friday edition of CRO.ticker has you fully covered. SBJ’s Ethan Joyce surveys industry executives on the biggest sports tech trends for 2026, with responses overwhelmingly pointing to the convergence of AI and data to drive hyper-personalization and workflow efficiency. The rising cost of live sports is also a focal point, with Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher examining FIFA’s latest response to "withering criticism" over exorbitant pricing for the World Cup and the Wall Street Journal’s Jason Gay arguing that professional leagues have made an "unbothered short-term choice to chase peak revenue against the clear risk of pricing out their most loyal fans." There’s also this from TrackFly Founder/CEO Stephen Baird on PE’s impact on fly-fishing: “It got to a point where these people didn’t give a f—." Find further full features. (link)

Vanderbilt’s Baseball head coaching position is now endowed thanks to a gift from parents of two current Vanderbilt students. They also are highly engaged, generous supporters of Vanderbilt and Dare to Grow, the university’s historic fundraising campaign to advance our most ambitious vision: to be the great university of the 21st century.” (link)

Netflix’s multiyear deal with Barstool Sports for exclusive video streaming rights to Pardon My Take, The Ryen Russillo Show, and Spittin’ Chiclets is worth "in the eight figures" annually, according to Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, who notes the move is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to migrate popular podcast video content from YouTube to its subscription platform, following similar agreements with Spotify (including The Ringer’s Bill Simmons) and iHeart. Glasspiegel also notes that Fanatics has reportedly pitched WWE studio programming to Netflix, potentially expanding on existing collaborations. While the audio versions of these podcasts remain free on other platforms, the video exclusivity could potentially challenge YouTube’s dominance, where users watched over 700M hours of podcasts in October alone. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich and Ben Horney unpack some specifics of the Big 12's pending agreement with Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS). In exchange for up to roughly $30M per member who opts in and a $25M investment in Big 12 Properties, CAS would earn a percentage of conference revenue (capped at 15%) only if specific thresholds are met, while schools taking the $30M would see a portion of their future conference distributions withheld by CAS rather than paying back a loan with interest. Additionally, CAS would receive a 10% commission on any revenue-generating deals it facilitates, the option to take equity stakes in new joint ventures, and a potential $2.5M annual retainer fee through 2031. Notably, the partnership would grant the Big 12 exclusivity, preventing RedBird from offering similar deals to other power conferences. Christovich and Horney add: “What changed between [the summer of 2024] and now was equity, according to one source. Earlier versions of the proposal had involved offering some kind of equity stake in the conference and/or schools, the source said, which seemed to be a nonstarter for some schools. But this fall, the conference and the firms put together a new proposal that didn’t require the Big 12 or any schools to give up equity stakes in subsidiaries of their athletic department assets. The current proposal was only shared with athletic directors last week, though conference and university officials have been working on it for months, another source said.” (link)

In the second part of a Q&A between Ohio State AD Ross Bjork and former Columbus Dispatch contributor Bill Rabinowitz, Bjork offers the latest update on the Big Ten’s stalled private equity deal: “We still had a long way to go before we would get to an approval phase of it. A lot of times, people just focus on the money. But the governance of how it’s structured in the future — What does grant of rights mean? What do voting parameters mean? What does equity mean? What does Big Ten Enterprises mean? — there were a lot of things that still had to get flushed out. … We’ve got to probably take a deep breath and get through the holidays. Maybe we’ll see where it’s at the beginning of the year.” Asked if Ohio State would consider doing a PE deal on its own like Utah: “The same questions apply. Ohio State has the biggest brand in college sports, the biggest TV viewership, the biggest revenue, the biggest sponsorship portfolio. We get a lot of incoming inquiries about, hey, would you have a conversation? We’re curious about those conversations, but we haven’t entertained anything. We could because it’s Ohio State, but to me you have to be very careful about the governance as much as you do the finances. So if we looked at something, it would be very strategic, it would be very high level, it would have high impact. We just haven’t found anything that would be meaningful from that standpoint.” More from Bjork. (link)

Texas tops CNBC’s Official College Sports Valuations Top 75 list of the most valuable college athletic programs for 2025 having climbed 16% YoY from 2024 to a valuation of $1.48B, while pulling in aggregate revenue of $332M, more than any other school and 23% more than in the previous year, per the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database. Last year’s most valuable program, Ohio State, dropped to the second spot with a valuation of $1.35B, 2% more than last year, after seeing program revenue decline by 9% to $255M in FY24 due to a 20% decrease in ticket revenue resulting from the Buckeyes having hosted two fewer football home games. Texas A&M ($1.32B valuation/2024 revenue of $266M), Georgia ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $242M) and Michigan ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $239M) rounded out CNBC’s top five. Combined, the top 75 athletic programs on the list are worth a combined $51.22B, 13% more than the value in last year’s rankings, with FY24 aggregate revenue of $11.84B, 8% more than last year. Also of note, Oregon State is the highest valued non-Power 4 school coming in at No. 61 ($440M valuation/2024 revenue of $120M). Complete list. (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione “promises that his staff is doing everything in their power to create an environment the likes of which has never been seen in Norman” for tonight’s College Football Playoff First Round match-up against Alabama, per The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson, who notes that while they’re constrained some by CFP regulations for what host schools can do, they’re still aiming high. Castiglione: “We have some huge surprises planned for (Friday night), but there are many variables that have to fall into place for them to happen, including weather. … We’ve tried to go deep in the bag of tricks to find special ways to create a magical moment for everybody. … We need to have our fans show up early. We’d love to have them in their seats about 45 minutes before kick because there’s a lot – we’re going to keep some of it a surprise – but there’s a lot that’s going to unfold. … The idea of hosting what truly is the biggest game ever in our stadium and in our state, you don’t need the hyperbole to hype it up. It just hypes itself. Add two of the true iconic programs in the history of college football to go with it? It’s just dripping with metaphors and pageantry and excitement and anticipation.” More. Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joins the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to dive into the current CFP set-up and if there’s a need for a Group of 6 playoff: “The reality is that without the strength of schedule, without some of the metrics that are now being evaluated, eye test included, it's going to be really tough for institutions that do not have a certain schedule or play against ranked opponents to be able to get access to that playoff. So henceforth, there's a need for a playoff structure or another way to reward those institutions to play for a championship. And I do like the fact, and I still stand by it, that having some type of situation where you have the G6 and you have an ability to play really good teams against each other with a natural feed into the college football playoff. That was the plan that I talked about. … It's going to be tougher with these mega-conferences, especially in the big two that we have, the SEC and the Big Ten, who are able to schedule those high-ranked opponents to even get a chance to knock them off are going to be more difficult. … Until we have some type of standardized way to evaluate all college football programs, you're going to have to go and be able to knock off the big boys and specifically in the Big Ten and the SEC. And the only way you can do that is providing inventory and financial wherewithal to get there.” More from Frazier. (link)

The cost to attend this year’s College Football Playoff First Round is running much lower than last year, according to Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey, who notes every game is already sold out. The most expensive get-in resale ticket price is $237 for Saturday’s Miami (FL)-Texas A&M contest at Kyle Field, while Tulane-Ole Miss will set you back $190, Alabama-Oklahoma runs $168 and James Madison-Oregon costs just $63. Last December, “the cheapest resale tickets for Indiana-Notre Dame were more than $900, while Clemson-Texas and Tennessee-Ohio State each topped $300. This weekend’s games feature two Group of 6 visiting opponents in Tulane and JMU, and they don’t have the benefit of the massive fan bases that Notre Dame, Texas, and Ohio State carried last year. Ticket prices for last season’s CFP quarterfinal matchups, played at traditional New Year’s Six bowl sites, were substantially lower than the first round. The get-in price for the Rose Bowl was nearly $200, but the cheapest seats for the other three games all cost less than $40.” More. (link)

Opsis Architecture Principal Chris Roberts shares with SBJ the vision behind the design of the new North End Zone experience at Boise State’s Albertson Stadium as well as how the transformation is taking shape ahead of the 2026 campaign: “We’re wrapping up construction here. It’ll be ready for the 2026 season. It’s going to provide a whole new atmosphere and not just for sort of pre-seating options in the north end zone, but connecting both concourses on the east and west side. So, you’ll have 360 navigation of the facility, a lot of really cool opportunities for the [general admission] experience. … You know, gone are the days where it’s just simply providing seats and you’re trying to get as many people in the stadium. It’s really about addressing different modes and ways of experiencing a game. Some people are very tuned in and really want to be a part of the action. Other people just want to be a part of the event. So, there’s a lot of other opportunities there in terms of, maybe it’s not about having the perfect seat but it’s about being there and taking in the atmosphere and providing just opportunities for everybody. What we've been trying to do is create those opportunities that resonate with individuals and the way that they want to participate or experience the atmosphere.” (link)

Memphis men’s basketball student-athlete Aaron Bradshaw has reportedly had more than $20K withheld from his NIL compensation because of multiple team-rule violations, per The Daily Helmsman’s Sam Shoemaker, who notes Bradshaw hasn’t been “charged” with anything but the money has been retained from his monthly pay. During ESPN’s call of Memphis' Wednesday night loss to Vanderbilt, network analyst Dane Bradshaw paraphrased Tigers HC Penny Hardaway as saying: “I fined him for being late. I fined him for violating our dress code, three grand here, three grand there. Guess who started to show up early? Guess who started to put effort in?” Per the broadcast, Bradshaw’s withheld compensation will be distributed among the rest of the team. (link)
