Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey takes a stab on X at how to “reset” the industry, which includes removing the FBS from under the NCAA, promotion & relegation, unite media rights, move the transfer portal window to the end of the spring, collective bargaining, a true salary cap & more: “Always a solution...at minimum worth a discussion. The front porch of our communities and states have too much value…we represent something bigger than ourselves. [...] Insanity isn’t the solution. The bottom is when you stop digging.” Dickey also thoughtfully engaged with many who responded to his framework. Worth your time. (link)

North Alabama AD Josh Looney responds to Dickey about moving the transfer window to the end of the spring: “The lowest-hanging fruit for all divisions to adopt. Values education through a full academic year at one institution, better supports progress toward degree across all levels, allows athletes time to make significant athletic and academic decisions, and respects the football calendar for FBS, FCS (and many D2/D3) programs. Yet, this fall, that option was bypassed and Jan. 2–16 was chosen instead. How is that a better outcome?” (link)

“I’m tired of the sleeping giant narrative. I’m tired of the concept of, ‘Man, they have so much potential.’ I want us to be the group — meaning athletic department, coaching staff, fan base, community — that wakes it up once and for all. There’s just never been a better time.” That’s Arizona State AD Graham Rossini as Sun Devils Football HC Kenny Dillingham has officially agreed to an extension to stay in The Valley, turning down overtures from Michigan. Dillingham’s compensation will jump to $7.5M annually & his staff pool will increase to $11M. Dillingham went on to lobby for others across Phoenix to step up: “We need to find one of these really rich people in this city to step up and stroke a check, and I’ll do everything I can to make (them) the most famous person in the city. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. You’re telling me there’s not one person who can stroke a $20 million check right now? There’s somebody out here who can. … Somebody can step up and completely take this place from the direction it’s going to ‘Holy Cow.’” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy spent time in Norman ahead of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione’s last Sooners football game. OU President Joe Harroz provides perspective: “We’ve never seen the swing in terms of change, at least in the 30 years I’ve been an indirect part of college athletics, that we have right now. So will it change? Yes. Is it changing? Yes. … It will change, it will continue to evolve, but I think the values and the perspective will continue to be there that Joe has built in the organization.” On the topic of former AT&T boss Randall Stephenson - who is assisting with the AD search - simply taking over the OU athletic department, Harroz quipped: “Believe me, I’ve asked. Turns out we can’t afford him.” (link)

In his rev share/NIL missive to fans, UCF AD Terry Mohajir highlights a goal of welcoming 50 additional corporate partners to advance the future of Knights athletics while aligning with business strategies across three key tracks: Corporate Partnership, which provides access to marketing platforms for brand messages as well as to NIL deals enabling companies to amplify brand exposure through UCF and student-athlete assets; Corporate Donor, which includes tailored philanthropic opportunities for corporate partners looking for community impact or brand visibility through NIL; and Athlete partnership, where brands can be connected directly to student-athletes through true, third-party NIL opportunities. The rev share breakdown at NC State has been publicly released: football got $13.5M, men’s basketball received $4M and women’s basketball grabbed $1M. The Wolfpacker’s Noah Fleischman: “In turn, the other 15 Olympic sports on campus were given a figure that the coaching staffs were able to divvy up as they felt fit best by either adding more scholarships, or to pay athletes through revenue sharing or Alston payments. … Only the first $2M of increased scholarships for Olympic sports counted against the $20.5M cap.” Women’s track/cross country led the way with $932K, followed by baseball ($792K), softball and women’s swimming ($726K each) and women’s soccer ($660K) to round out the top five. Georgia Tech highlights the myriad positives from its 2025 football campaign in attendance, TV viewership, social media, ad equivalency and more. From a fan standpoint, the Ramblin Wreck’s average attendance of 47,694 was the highest at Bobby Dodd Stadium since 2015 and represented a 24.8% increase over 2024, while sellouts in its final two home games at Bobby Dodd against Syracuse and Pitt marked the first time since 2015 that the Jackets sold out multiple home games in a season. Overall, more than 25M viewers tuned in to watch GT Football during nine Nielsen-rated broadcasts with its average viewership of 2.79M ranking 19th nationally, up 34 spots from just two years ago. In seven games on ABC and ESPN, Georgia Tech averaged more than 3.4M viewers per game. Tech football managed 28.8M social media impressions, with a worldwide reach of 98.5M, over the course of 12 regular-season games. More. (link)

North Texas Football HC Neal Brown will earn $1.1M in annual base salary as part of a five-year deal, per the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, who notes Brown’s compensation will rise through additional payments that kick in starting Jan. 1, 2027. The first of those bumps is $400K, with the sum jumping to $1.15M in 2028, $1.35M in 2029 and $1.55M in 2030. Also within the deal are annual retention bonuses of $375K that are slated to start on Jan. 1, 2029. The pool for assistants is $2.9M, while an additional $744K will be available for non-coaching personnel and $312K for UNT’s strength and conditioning staff. If UNT were to terminate Brown’s contract without cause, it would be required to pay out his salary and other compensation for the first 36 months of the agreement and 60% of that sum for the last 24 months. The amount the school would be required to pay for the last 24 months will increase by 5% for every year the team wins seven games during Brown’s tenure up to 75%. More. (link)

On the latest edition of The Career Hustle, Colorado State Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations, Student Success & SWA Christina Diaz joins College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss her transition from collegiate volleyball coach to administrator, a pivot she says was spurred by the "adversity" of not landing a permanent head coaching role early in her career. Diaz applies a coaching mindset to administration, noting that she approaches adapting to new leadership styles like a "scout plan" where she must "observe, listen, and understand… tendencies" to be effective. On hiring, Diaz prioritizes candidates who are "great teammates" with integrity and communication skills, noting: "I want someone that I want to go to battle with that I'm competing with that I know that um you know when we lose we're going to be upset but we're going to quickly learn from it and when we win is going to be in the huddle and we're celebrating we're in the locker room and those type of things." Diaz advises young professionals to embrace the service nature of the industry, cautioning that "it isn't about you ultimately. We're serving a bigger picture.” More from Diaz on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

D1Baseball’s Bradley Smart details the intensifying "arms race" of player development technology in college baseball, specifically within the ACC, where programs are investing heavily to chase the standard set by Wake Forest’s pitching lab. While the Demon Deacons employ a 26-member student analytics team and a full-time biomechanist, other programs are turning to third-party partners to bridge the gap. Florida State recently became the first program to install Driveline’s Launchpad, an automated biomechanics system designed to deliver "time to insight" without the massive manpower required for a custom lab, while North Carolina is the lone NCAA representative to own a Trajekt Arc pitching robot, a machine used by 26 MLB teams that can mimic specific pitchers' arsenals. Meanwhile, Virginia joins Clemson in adopting Maven Baseball Lab technology for comprehensive biomechanical assessments. Tar Heels HC Scott Forbes emphasizes the necessity of the investment despite the high price tags: "I think you’re crazy if you don’t pay attention and continue to adapt. More importantly, you have to be able to apply it. It’s a waste of money if you can’t apply it." Lots more. (link)

Front Office Sports’ Hilary George-Parkin observes that professional teams are investing heavily in athlete recovery infrastructure as longevity becomes a core competitive and financial priority. Modern training facilities now dedicate large portions of their footprint to cryotherapy, red-light therapy, underwater treadmills, aquatherapy pools, sensory-deprivation tanks, PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) devices, and multimodality systems like the $159,500 Ammortal Chamber. Teams view recovery as essential to sustaining peak performance, extending careers, and protecting star availability amid grueling game schedules, and NBA SVP/Head of Basketball R&D Tom Ryan notes: “We’re a star-driven league, and making sure our best players are on the court for as many games, as many minutes, and as many seasons as possible is core to our business.” Life Sports Agency Co-Founder/CEO Todd Ramasar adds: “The best ability is availability.” (link)

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, “The NBA is enacting several sports betting policies to its 30 teams, including changing injury reporting rules: Teams now will be required to resubmit injury listings on game day between 11 am and 1 pm local time and update public reports every 15 minutes, sources tell ESPN.” The league is “also pushing gaming companies for changes to prop bets involving individual players, such as: limiting maximum amount that can be bet, limitations on ‘unders,’ limiting population of players and eliminating problematic bet types, like bets on an action on a single play.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork continues with high-profile Buckeyes beat writer Bill Rabinowitz, argues for reworking the football calendar to move spring practice back to the summer to align with an academic calendar: “If we ever want to say we’re anything about academics, we need to match up the player roster building back to the academic calendar. If we allow the summer access - the OTA model or whatever you want to call it - that would eliminate the need to have these guys on campus in January (as early enrollee freshmen). The only reason the portal is where it’s at is so people can build their roster to have spring practice.” Also of note from Bjork on the topic: “This is actually an easy fix with the calendar if everybody kind of puts their silo down and does what’s best for the game. But we sort of put up these barriers because we all try to protect our competitive side. If we really thought about it and laid it all out and said, ‘Here’s the training and playing season and here’s the roster-building season,’ we could figure this out.” (link)

Army West Point and Navy aren’t immune to the current chaos running rampant throughout college sports, where the biggest spenders often earn the biggest reward, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes it’s up to new first-year service academy ADs, Army’s Tom Theodorakis and Navy’s Michael Kelly, to steer their programs through rough waters. Theodorakis: “Revenue is important. We don’t shy away from that.” Beyond apparel deals and the tradition-inspired uniforms synonymous with the Army-Navy game, the academies are leveraging the avenues one would expect from modern athletic departments intent on driving revenue. Navy has long run its sponsorship sales and multimedia rights in-house, providing flexibility and control over its internal strategy when trying to monetize assets. Army, meanwhile, recently signed a 10-year renewal with Learfield, which has had a working relationship with the academy since 2005. That deal notably dovetails with the ongoing $175M renovation of Michie Stadium’s east side.” Theodorakis: “Some schools, honestly, have an identity crisis about who they are and how they’re allocating resources. What’s special about Army and Navy is we know who we are.” More. (link)

Pacific President/WCC President’s Council Chair Chris Callahan appreciates the positive ways men’s basketball is currently trending throughout the league, remarking: “When you look at the basketball-centric conferences, I feel like we’re right there. Investing in the facilities is really critical and I think it’s been a long time coming for a lot of these schools.” WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson is also encouraged by the commitment league schools are showing toward improving hoops facilities: “Many student-athletes in this new world of college basketball are focused on revenue benefits, but if you don’t have those facilities and amenities, you really can’t become part of the conversation. So, it helps tremendously to see the way our schools are investing overall.” Callahan: “I’m just so proud of this conference in large part because we’ve leaned into who we are. I came from Power Four schools. It’s very different. Here, in a high-quality mid-major without football, we can really focus more on the student-athlete experience, on the fan experience, and on all of our sports but particularly on basketball. It’s really exciting to see.” More. (link)

Writing for NIL Wire, KC Smurthwaite examines the factors that led to UC San Diego’s jump to the West Coast Conference, noting the league committed to $10M in total payments to the Tritons, “a figure that dwarfs what conferences typically pay low and mid-major schools in realignment.” Per the deal, UC San Diego was to receive a $4M payment within 10 days of full execution, contingent on UCSD formally notifying the Big West of its departure effective June 30, 2027, as well as three annual payments of $1.5M through 2029-30 and three additional annual payments of $500K through 2032-33. The league also completely waived its standard entry fee. Instead of paying an equity buy-in, UCSD will receive the conference payment, an arrangement explicitly justified by the Tritons’ transition costs and anticipated contributions to the league. One sitting AD in California said: “This wasn’t a panic move, but it was close. The WCC membership was growing anxious, almost teetering on angry, as other conferences were being proactive. They had to do something, especially with some Gonzaga money still in the coffers.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen penned a letter to Cornhuskers fans & provided some hard data on volleyball’s secondary ticket market value: “Unique to the strong volleyball interest at Nebraska, 10% of current season-ticket holders did not use their tickets this year but rather sold those tickets through secondary markets. Those tickets, originally purchased for a total of $600,000 by those ticket holders, were then resold for a total of $3.2M on the secondary market. As we indicated last year, ticket use for this purpose is strictly prohibited. The accounts that resold the entirety of their tickets will be excluded from the ability to purchase season-tickets in 2026.” Dannen also notes the impact of alcohol sales at new venues alongside the new partnership with Aramark: “More than 313K alcoholic beverages were served and new food options were added to the menu, resulting in an increase of 75% in total concession revenue compared to last year. The introduction of alcohol sales came with concerns about the impact on fan behavior, but it remained consistent with the previous five years.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the paydays for quarterbacks in the college market could reach up to $5M for a single season, noting that the top QBs entering the 2026 transfer portal are TCU’s Josh Hoover, Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt, Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby and Florida’s DJ Lagway, with Miami (FL), LSU and maybe Oregon also on the hunt for a new QB. F is for Friday. From fly fishing to FIFA fumbling, the Friday edition of CRO.ticker has you fully covered. SBJ’s Ethan Joyce surveys industry executives on the biggest sports tech trends for 2026, with responses overwhelmingly pointing to the convergence of AI and data to drive hyper-personalization and workflow efficiency. The rising cost of live sports is also a focal point, with Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher examining FIFA’s latest response to "withering criticism" over exorbitant pricing for the World Cup and the Wall Street Journal’s Jason Gay arguing that professional leagues have made an "unbothered short-term choice to chase peak revenue against the clear risk of pricing out their most loyal fans." There’s also this from TrackFly Founder/CEO Stephen Baird on PE’s impact on fly-fishing: “It got to a point where these people didn’t give a f—." Find further full features. (link)

Vanderbilt’s Baseball head coaching position is now endowed thanks to a gift from parents of two current Vanderbilt students. A bit more context: “The donors, one of whom attended Vanderbilt, expressed deep admiration for Coach [Tim] Corbin’s exemplary leadership and his distinguished representation of Vanderbilt on and off the field. They also are highly engaged, generous supporters of Vanderbilt and Dare to Grow, the university’s historic fundraising campaign to advance our most ambitious vision: to be the great university of the 21st century.” (link)

Netflix’s multiyear deal with Barstool Sports for exclusive video streaming rights to Pardon My Take, The Ryen Russillo Show, and Spittin’ Chiclets is worth "in the eight figures" annually, according to Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, who notes the move is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to migrate popular podcast video content from YouTube to its subscription platform, following similar agreements with Spotify (including The Ringer’s Bill Simmons) and iHeart. Glasspiegel also notes that Fanatics has reportedly pitched WWE studio programming to Netflix, potentially expanding on existing collaborations. While the audio versions of these podcasts remain free on other platforms, the video exclusivity could potentially challenge YouTube’s dominance, where users watched over 700M hours of podcasts in October alone.
