“Congrats to CSA clients Tulane and JMU on making the College Football Playoff! Roll Wave and Go Dukes!" |
#10: Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard breaks down the current NIL situation in Ames. Here are Pollard’s key remarks to the media…
➤ “We allocated the $20M. Football got $13M, men’s basketball got $5M, wrestling got $1M and women’s basketball got $750K. Every one of those coaches wants more money, but somebody’s got to make the decision of what you’re gonna get. Would [Men’s Basketball HC] T.J. [Otzelberger] want more money, does his team need more money? Yes. We can’t give him anymore rev share because we’re at the cap. As an institution, I don’t know how we’re funding it.”
➤ “We’ve gotta continue to work really hard to try to figure out how Iowa State can exist above the cap, but that’s not something we get to do. The NCAA took it away. You can’t go to donors anymore. You can’t put it in a collective anymore. All you can do is business-to-business. So, we’ve gotta find sponsors that are willing to do that. At the same time, our total sponsorship sales are $12M and we need that $12M just to be able to do what we’re currently doing and we just added $20M more of expenses, right? The realistic thought that there’s this huge amount of money out there that’s over and above the cap that’s legal, it’s gonna take a lot of work. You can’t snap your fingers and make that happen. When you hear these numbers over the cap, no one can put that in writing.”

#7: Texas has issued an RFP seeking private developer(s) "to plan, design, construct, equip, finance and operate" a 6,000-seat volleyball arena and an adjacent student-athlete housing facility. The RFP states these two construction projects would have "minimal financial outlay from the University.” Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte: "This is a critical step for the future of Texas volleyball and our student-athletes' housing experience. It is about creating an experience that our student-athletes, coaches and passionate fans will be proud of in the heart of a district built for elite talent and entertainment." Horns247’s Chip Brown notes that “under the proposed public-private collaboration, UT would own both the new arena…as well as the student-athlete housing properties, and an outside entity would operate them.” (link); Take a look at renderings of the project. #6: Yahoo's Ross Dellenger shares a look at how a 24-team CFP field would look based on this year's rankings and conference standings “using the Big Ten's proposed format of 4 AQs for each power conference + 2 G5 AQs + 6 at-large. Conference title games would likely be eliminated. First two rounds at better seed.” (link)

#4: Utah’s Board of Trustees has ratified a “nine-figure” private equity deal with Otro Capital that calls for the creation of Utah Brands & Entertainment, a company to oversee the athletic department’s revenue-generating sources. Otro will take a minority ownership stake in Utah Brands, and hold two board seats, with the university’s Utah Growth Capital Partners Foundation to hold four seats as AD Mark Harlan serves as chair. An additional supporter/investor will sit in the seventh board position. University officials have declined to say how much Otro Capital plans to initially invest because the deal has not been finalized but it is expected to be completed by early 2026. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “The project includes a fascinating wrinkle. The university is offering a prominent group of donors the ability to purchase a stake in Utah Brands & Entertainment. … An exit strategy — in five to seven years — exists, and the university holds the right to purchase Otro’s ownership stake.” More. #3: Athletes.org has published its first collective bargaining agreement framework that outlines clear terms between student-athletes and a governing body, comparisons to pro sports and the benefits for all parties. The four-year proposal would include a revenue share template agreement, “school-specific revenue-sharing percentage based on pro rata revenue per sport,” a five-year max on eligibility, a removal of third-part NIL limitations and more. Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “We are facing a pivotal moment and must embrace the inevitable change. In order to do that successfully, we need to have all parties at the table to forge a path to a future with clear enforceable rules, alignment with our educational academy and a durable framework that appropriately shares both the investment and growth of our entire enterprise in a stable and sustainable way. Undoubtedly, it’s a complicated road to travel and new ideas will always oblige scrutiny and criticism. We can’t let that deter us. Athletes.org’s CBA draft may not be perfect today, but it’s one of the first concrete blueprints I’ve seen which integrates the athlete’s side of this paradigm shift. It includes the student-athlete’s very necessary perspective around their rights and realities but it also identifies pathways for a wider athlete ecosystem of general participation and Olympic hopefuls. There’s more work to do but efforts like this move the conversation from abstract talking points to workable solutions.” More from Syracuse Chancellor/President Kent Syverud, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Tennessee AD Danny White, Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey and more.
