Oregon State AD Scott Barnes sits down with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher and had this to say on what he learned from the failed Blueprint Sports deal: “We didn't execute, and it is what it is. When you look at the entire construct of what we're doing just in the NIL rev share game, it's a fairly small part of that. And I think I want to make sure we lean in on that. It's a membership-based organization. We're thinking now about bringing a membership-based organization inside our athletic department and building that out. We'll talk more about that in January, but giving those donors an opportunity, that are smaller level, to join the process. If you remember, prior to rev share, Dam Nation [collective] was used for larger gifts that were not tax deductible. As we've seen rev share come into play, all those larger gifts are coming through our foundation now. They're write-offs. So really, what you have to add … is a membership-based model. That's what Blueprint was stood up to be. We're now re-evaluating that to bring that potentially in house as a membership-based model to add to what we're doing in rev share.” More from Barnes. Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy joined KSEE24’s Scott Bemis and Angelique Martinez and said this on how Fresno State is handling revenue sharing: “The good thing is we have great supporters at Fresno State. The one thing I’ll tell you from a revenue share standpoint, it’s 100% coming from private support, from donors, and we need to get past that, especially going into the Pac-12. We need to elevate what we’re doing. We’re gonna have a much higher revenue share total for football for next year, which is really exciting. … We always have to keep working on that, and I think once the Pac-12 schedule comes out next year … we’re gonna have a much more robust home schedule … than we’ve had in the past. So, we’re gonna have to align our ticket prices with that. It’s unfortunate. We still want to make Valley Children’s Stadium the most affordable ticket and great game experience, but the reality is winning and investing at the Pac-12 level is going to take some work.” More from Klassy. Last week’s ruling granting a preliminary injunction to former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt, that, for now, prohibits the NCAA from enforcing a six-year show-cause penalty, has longtime NCAA observers believing it “could serve as the groundwork for anyone looking to challenge any NCAA penalty, including show causes.” Per ESPN’s Dan Wetzel: “NCAA enforcement was already struggling with penalties written for a bygone era in the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics. What were once bedrock sanctions such as scholarship reductions are largely moot and easily worked around in an era where direct revenue-sharing or NIL deals can allow for a star player to just pay his own tuition as a ‘walk-on,’ for example. The show cause was still effective at keeping rule-breaking coaches out of the college game. Now, perhaps, even that is at risk due to the NCAA's own infractions structure.” Mars Law Firm Founder Tom Mars: “This can become an existential threat to the enforcement system. The rules on their face are inconsistent with how justice is administered everywhere else in the United States.” More. (link)

USC and Notre Dame officials failed to reach an agreement extending the two teams’ football series and are now “exploring replacement opponents for 2026,” per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. According to those familiar with the negotiations, “scheduling complications and College Football Playoff implications were at the root of the series’ demise,” with the latest round of discussions among administrators having “fizzled over the last two weeks.” The latest discussions between Trojans AD Jen Cohen and Irish AD Pete Bevacqua reportedly “centered around a possible game next year on Week Zero, though that did not materialize” with the two administrators agreeing to work to restart the series as soon as 2030. As a result, Notre Dame will now play BYU in the home-and-home series in 2026 (Provo) and 2027 (South Bend). More. (link, link)

Michigan Football Interim HC Biff Poggi was very candid during a meeting with local media this morning, per the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia. Poggi: “It’s been five years of a malfunctioning organization. Let’s call it what it is: It’s happened every year. The athletic director doesn’t want any more of that … there will be a massive self examination of what’s happened in this building.” Poggi also confirmed he’s been interviewed for the full-time position: “I’m being considered. I’ve had multiple interviews, multiple conversations. Nobody knows what’s gonna happen. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I just appreciate being considered and we’ll see what happens.” Asked why he would be a strong choice for the long-term job, Poggi remarked, "Because I know what the hell I'm doing. ... I want to fix this program." According to Garcia, Poggi also noted UM AD Warde Manuel told the team he hopes to have a new coach in place sometime between Christmas and the bowl game. Paramount has amended its offer to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery with billionaire Larry Ellison agreeing to “personally guarantee $40.4B of equity financing for the deal and publish records related to the family trust that backstops it,” per The Wall Street Journal’s Lauren Thomas. This comes after Warner previously recommended its shareholders reject Paramount’s bid stating it felt Netflix’s proposal for its studios and HBO Max streaming service was still superior. Thomas: “Warner’s rejection had focused on what it had called an ‘illusory’ offer, raising concerns about the credibility of the equity being offered by Paramount. It had focused on the structure of the Ellison family’s commitment to funding the deal, and called for Ellison to provide a more enforceable personal commitment. Paramount’s revised offer aimed to address those concerns. … It also increased the fee it would pay if the deal was blocked by regulators, matching Netflix’s unusually high $5.8B offer. Paramount extended the expiration date of its tender offer to Jan. 21, from Jan. 8. … Warner and its shareholders will now have to decide if the new Paramount bid answers their doubts about closing the deal.” (link)

Hero Sports’ KC Smurthwaite profiles Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill and his forward-looking strategy to sell a conference-wide jersey patch sponsorship rather than leaving institutions to navigate the market individually. Wistrcill has pitched nearly a dozen companies on the concept and says: “We’re talking hundreds of millions of impressions. From August to mid-June. One sponsor, next to the Big Sky logo, for every student-athlete. It becomes part of an overall identity. ... It’s still playing for the front of the jersey. This just helps keep the lights on." The plan involves negotiating with existing multimedia rights holders to carve out the asset, with the goal of generating a collective payout larger than the sum of individual school deals. If a partnership isn't secured by early 2026, rights will revert to the institutions. Wistrcill also talks about questions regarding expansion and realignment, which inevitably come up, and says: “We’re proud of who we are. You always have to be looking down the street, around the corner. The future is hard to predict. … There’s always going to be a home for schools like ours. There are too many like us.” More. (link)

Cowboy State Daily’s David Madison examines how Wyoming is navigating the NIL era with a "Moneyball" approach, necessitated by its isolated geography and limited corporate base compared to rivals like Colorado State or BYU. Cowboys AD Tom Burman explains that the “middle of America struggled with [NIL]. I think it has a little bit to do with a conservative nature and style. They just were like, 'I'm not sure who I'm giving this money to. I don't feel comfortable with it.'" Now, Burman notes, the department is “seeing people say to us, ‘OK, if I can give the money to Cowboy Joe (the UW fundraising arm), I'll up my annual Cowboy Joe donation.’ If you ask me where we are a year from now, we'll have caught up significantly to our competition." Looking toward the future, Burman envisions an eventuality whereby the “top 40-ish spin off — basically the Big Ten, SEC. And they invite a few others that have great television markets and maybe some with great traditions, but a lot will be left out. Whether that number is 40 or 60, I don't know. But I think that happens someday. And then the rest of us recalibrate and build what I would call a more traditional college model." More. (link)

More from U.S. Council on Athletes’ Health (USCAH) President and CEO/Big Ten CMO Jim Borchers with Inside Higher Ed. On the topic of money, the integrity of college athletics and what lies ahead: “In the United States, sport is so much a part of what the community is and how people identify with an institution. But the financial markets are creating a transactional nature to it. I think most college athletes just want sport to continue to be part of their college experience, because it’s what they’ve known. They want to go to school, have a peer group and play a sport they enjoy. When it becomes a financial vehicle, there’s a whole different aspect to sport because now your efforts and what you’re doing in sport are objectively equated with a dollar amount. And how do we reconcile those two? It’s really challenging. Now that you have athletes in college making seven figures, they’re probably the financial engine for their families. Their purpose and why they’re there has changed. Not that sport hasn’t always been a big part of the collegiate experience, but if you’re paying somebody $1M or $500K to participate in sport, I don’t think they’re going to have much focus on any of the other reasons why they’re in college.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini explains that while Football HC Kenny Dillingham’s amended contract was forwarded to Dillingham and his agent at the end of the regular season, talks began in October about how they wanted to prepare for next season. By the time the Arizona game rolled around, the framework of a deal was already in place. Most important to Dillingham was keeping his staff in place, as evidenced by the bump up to $11M for the AC pool. Rossini: "I was surprised that there was a lot of what I thought was misinformation and false narrative out there that there was a standoff. That there were aspects of the deal that were never there to begin with. Keeping Kenny was an absolute priority for me. It was a priority for [ASU President] Dr. [Michael] Crow. It was never a conversation that we had about letting him move on. Like he said yesterday, he was never offered a job. It was more about giving our coaches the tools to do their job at the highest possible level. In our business, leadership matters." (link)

Valley News’ Michael Coughlin Jr. observes that a “resurgence in athletics at Dartmouth could be in progress – even if there have been fits and starts.” Big Green AD Mike Harrity notes: “Look, we have a lot of work to do, absolutely. But I believe that everybody recognizes that it is a new day.” Coughlin notes the turnaround is highlighted by the performance of the women’s soccer program under HC Taylor Schram – Harrity’s first hire – which just earned its first NCAA Tournament berth in 20 years. Harrity has also overseen a men's hockey revival (the Big Green are off to an 11-1 start) after extending HC Reid Cashman despite early struggles. Harrity acknowledges that every program is different, but one way all programs can try to improve is by seeking answers from within. “We have spent a lot of time trying to create opportunities for our coaches to share ideas with each other, to sharpen each other’s approaches.” The department has added over 11 full-time positions to the Dartmouth Peak Performance student-athlete support program, and Harrity notes that while the program predates his tenure, he was eager to enhance it: “It’s an infinite game, it’s not like we’re ever going to wake up one day and say, ‘OK, this is done, we’ve done all we can to maximize our students’ potential. It’s human development — that’s the fun of it." (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that the BPS Foundation, a charity companion to NIL collective operator Blueprint Sports, funneled nearly $35M in NIL payments to 150 college athletes in 2024 before shutting down last December. Tax filings reveal the foundation generated $41.3M in revenue (more than double its 2023 intake) and routed $34.9M through the for-profit Blueprint Sports, with an additional $3.9M spent on "management fees" covering staff salaries. The foundation also distributed funds to university-affiliated entities, including $1.6M to Boston College, $1.05M to the Kansas University Endowment Association, and $855K to the University of Maryland Foundation. The dissolution followed an IRS memo challenging the tax-exempt status of collectives, a move that similarly impacted Georgia’s Classic City Collective, which brought in $16.1M in 2024 contributions, and Notre Dame’s FUND, which brought in $6.2M, down from roughly $20M the prior year. Ole Miss set a pair of records at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium during the first round of the College Football Playoff. First, the announced attendance of 68,251 for the win over Tulane broke the stadium record of 68,138, which was set Nov. 15 against Florida. Second, the school claimed a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing Santa Claus hats. The previous record was 33,033 at an Anaheim Angels game. Meanwhile, SBJ reports that at Texas A&M, the attendance of 104,122 for Saturday’s game against Miami (FL) was the second-largest crowd in CFP history, trailing 106,013 at last year’s SMU-Penn State game in State College. Netflix VP of Sports Gabe Spitzer, appearing on a podcast with Puck’s John Ourand, reiterated that the streamer’s live sports strategy remains focused on marquee events rather than season-long volume, stating: "For us, at least for right now, a more random game on a Friday night is not necessarily the same for us as [MLB] Opening Night or a Home Run Derby." Spitzer explained that live games must win a "battle for attention" against internal hits like Stranger Things and Squid Game, effectively ruling out interest in local rights or RSN-style packages. Regarding talent, Spitzer cited the non-exclusive hiring of Elle Duncan as a blueprint: “We wanted to say, ‘Hey, if you have an amazing opportunity, if you can go work the WNBA Finals somewhere else and it doesn’t conflict with one of our dates, go do that. So I think that’s going to be our approach to talent – it’s okay if you are somewhere else.” (link)
