SMU AD Damon Evans visited with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy for a Q&A to discuss the school’s new venture, Mustang Partners, and what it allows SMU to do. Evans points to an expansion of premium amenities and areas, licensing and special events as areas of focus for the new venture, adding: “We can better leverage our assets through Mustang Partners, but not just leveraging the assets that athletics has, but leveraging university assets as well that better position the university and athletics to drive more revenue. That’s beneficial for the whole. A lot of times when you’re doing sponsorships, the typical thing is to say, ‘Hey, we want a company to go out there and for this number of clicks and views that this sponsorship is going to cost you $50K to $100K. And then you kind of move on. We’re looking to build a partnership with people from this perspective with businesses. How do we take a partnership with a local business or corporation and not only tie that into athletics, but tie that into the university as a whole to where we’re leveraging assets on the university, whether that be a school like the Cox School of Business here on campus that we could tie into with a particular partner out there in the community?” More from Evans. The future of North Carolina’s Dean E. Smith Center has been a hot topic over recent weeks with three key stakeholder meetings having occurred over a short span: one with the Rams Club; a Dec. 15 call with former players; and another that was a mix of players and donors, per The News & Observer’s Shelby Swanson, who notes AD Bubba Cunningham described the players call as “very good.” Cunningham: “I think the meetings we’ve had have been helpful to make sure we get it right. I think everybody wants what’s best for Carolina basketball. And you need an awful lot of input to be sure that you get it right.” The player video conference occurred days after a group identifying itself as “Tar Heels Concerned for the Future of the Dean E. Smith Center and Carolina Basketball” submitted an open letter to [UNC Chancellor Lee] Roberts opposing any move of the Smith Center off campus, specifically to the Carolina North site — the 250-acre parcel located near the now-defunct Horace Williams Airport. Swanson: “In the past few months, heavy momentum existed in favor of moving the Smith Center to Carolina North. That momentum has stalled amid more introspection and stakeholder input.” Cunningham: “I don’t think we’re going to rush it. We’re going to make sure that we hear and make a decision that the university community is excited about. When we get to that point, that’s when we’ll decide.” (link)

North Florida AD Nick Morrow sits down with the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union’s Garry Smits and says of the Ospreys’ NIL challenges: “Before we opted into the new NCAA model, we couldn't hand out any NIL money because we didn't have a collective. … Our goal, really, is, can we get a pot of money that instead of losing five or six players a year, we get to keep half of them? … In the off-season, or when we start talking to our guys about trying to retain them, or we go to the portal, we're now going to have a pot of money to work with. That's exciting. We can be competitive within our league.” On the idea of a transfer fee: “I would love a transfer fee. Yeah, we develop, and you guys [Power Four schools] pay us a transfer fee to bring it in. But I don't think it's realistic. I think the Power Four will go and create their own league before they're going to get involved in transfer fees for the mid-majors. … At this point, you just have to kind of embrace it, but also use that to help recruit the next guy. Because if you can go, ‘Look, I've sent five guys in the past three years to power four programs, made a lot of money, got a lot of exposure.’ That's where we're at, and it's not going backwards.” More from Morrow. NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach offers this context on the USC-Notre Dame football series hiatus: “A person with direct knowledge of the communications between the Big Ten Conference office and schools confirmed … that all 18 schools received the full language of the CFP MOU, which was unanimously supported by all current and incoming members in March 2024. USC source disputes this. USC cites new information about the MOU (in past few weeks) & CFP selection process overall as key reasons it didn’t want to play Notre Dame late in the season.” (link)

Coaches are getting increasingly creative about adding talent by searching for second semester solutions to patch holes resulting from injury, suspension or even slumping starters, per SI’s Kevin Sweeney, who notes that more than 10 high-major teams have “kicked the tires on midseason options as well as a smattering of schools at lower levels.” USC Men’s Basketball HC Eric Musselman: “We need another body. The semester ends on Wednesday. If we can somehow get another player, I’d like to get that done, too, if we can make that happen.” Sweeney: “All this represents a significant uptick in activity compared to just a few years ago, when the very rare midseason adds were almost always redshirting players who either graduated high school early or came from the southern hemisphere and finished school in the winter. But as the NCAA has relaxed eligibility requirements and allowed more former professional players to join the college ranks, the pool of players potentially available has grown exponentially.” DraftExpress Director of Scouting Jon Chepkevich: “Everyone is incentivized to make it happen if there’s an appealing situation in college where they can play and have a meaningful role. Or even just get to the U.S., get acclimated for a few months in an NCAA atmosphere, and then survey their options in the portal come spring.” More. (link)

Missouri Football student-athlete Damon Wilson II has sued the Georgia Athletic Association as part of an NIL contract dispute, countering a lawsuit filed by UGA in early December seeking arbitration to get $390K in alleged damages from Wilson after the player signed an agreement to return to Athens before entering the transfer portal a month later. Per The Athletic’s Matt Baker and Seth Emerson, “Wilson’s attorneys allege a civil conspiracy involving the Bulldogs and Georgia’s collective to try to ‘penalize Wilson for his decision to transfer.’ The suit alleges that they interfered with his ability to enter the portal and lied about his NIL buyout.” Wilson attorney Jeff Jensen: “Georgia appears intent on making an example of someone, they just picked the wrong person. Damon never had a contract with them. I don’t see how Georgia thinks intimidation and litigation will help their recruitment efforts — maybe players could bring lawyers with them to practice.” Wilson’s attorneys allege he “lost out on endorsement opportunities and NIL revenue and suffered emotional and mental distress caused by the Bulldogs’ false claims” and are seeking a “fair and reasonable amount of damages” for the “financial and reputational harm he has suffered” along with legal fees. This complaint appears to be the first time a player has sued a school regarding an NIL deal. More. (link)

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Judges Guido Calabresi, Gerard E. Lynch and Sarah A. L. Merriam last week affirmed the dismissal of an antitrust lawsuit brought by former Kansas Men’s Basketball student-athlete Mario Chalmers and 15 other former college basketball players over their NIL usage in ads, broadcast and other commercial purposes. Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the biggest problem facing lawsuits such as the one filed by Chalmers is that too much time has passed. “Antitrust claims are subject to a four-year statute of limitations. The players sued on July 1, 2024, which means the statute of limitations reaches back to July 1, 2020. The last day any player in this case was enrolled at an NCAA-affiliated university was in 2016. … The three judges disagreed with Chalmers that the alleged damages caused by signing away NIL rights were so speculative that they justify extending the statute of limitations,” while also pointing out “there have been other cases brought against the NCAA over restrictions on athlete compensation—such as the Alston case, which involved compensation for education-related expenses—but Chalmers’ group waited until 2024. The judges quoted [Judge Paul A.] Engelmayer saying these players ‘sat on their hands for more than a decade before bringing this lawsuit.’” More. (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks has agreed to a one-year contract extension through June 30, 2031, with his total compensation for this academic year rising from $1.375M to $1.5M and base salary increasing by $125K annually over the term. The deal boosts his six-year average compensation to $1.75M and raises his maximum bonus potential to $400K based on Learfield Directors' Cup finishes and academic performance. Despite the raise, UGA President Jere Morehead noted Brooks remains "at or below the median" of SEC peers. This marks Brooks' third consecutive annual extension, following a year where Georgia captured national titles in women’s track, women’s tennis, and equestrian. (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart and JMI Sports President of UK Sports & Campus Marketing Paul Archey discussed the department's BBNIL strategy on the Behind the Blue podcast, describing it as a collaboration to leverage the university's nearly 200 corporate partners for student-athlete opportunities. Archey: “Of course we would love student-athletes to always do business with our partners, but there is no restriction. … More than 250 student-athletes have done more than 250 deals outside of BBNIL. They've brought their own deals. So our first pass at anything is to support those long-term partners I just mentioned… but if they don't feel like that's the right path for them and they want to go do their own thing, that's fine. We can work with them in that scenario." Barnhart also explained the Wildcats’ Alston approach, saying that "for a lot of schools, they just gave them the money and we said to our young people this is the way you match rights with responsibilities. And so we said, 'Yeah, you have the right to have that. There comes a responsibility with that, and that is performing academically and doing what you're supposed to do in the classroom and growing toward a degree.'" (link)

Former Ohio State/Arizona State/Iowa State/Eastern Michigan AD Gene Smith joins the PHNX Sun Devils podcast to discuss Sun Devils Football HC Kenny Dillingham's recent contract extension and applauds current ASU AD Graham Rossini for orchestrating the deal “under wraps.” On the broader landscape, Smith advocates for significant calendar reforms, including moving the transfer portal window to the spring and starting the season at Week Zero. He also supports expanding the CFP to 16 or even 24 teams to create more championship opportunities, while suggesting the Group of Five conferences should consider their own playoff: “When I was at Eastern Michigan, my coaches would come to me and complain about what was happening at Michigan or what was happening at Michigan State. And we need to have those resources. And I'm like, 'If you want what Michigan or Michigan State has, then go to Michigan or Michigan State.' I want to beat Toledo. I want to beat Bowling Green. And so I think a lot of schools are trying to chase an Alabama or trying to chase an Ohio State. The reality is there's some schools that shouldn't.” More. (link)

Bloomberg’s Elizabeth Rembert reports that U.S. colleges went on a borrowing spree in 2025, issuing over $34B in municipal debt—a 28% YoY increase and the highest volume since at least 2014. Driven by favorable rates, infrastructure needs (like Texas Tech’s stadium renovation and Boston University’s dorm overhaul), and fears of losing tax-exempt status due to legislative changes, schools aggressively tapped the market, with over 70% of issuance occurring in the first half of the year. While bankers from Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Barclays expect volume to cool slightly in 2026 as institutions adopt a more conservative approach amid federal funding uncertainty, they anticipate continued robust activity from large public universities and academic medical centers. RBC Capital Markets Co-Head of Higher Ed Christopher Good notes the firm has doubled its education sector investment banking staff in the past three years to meet the "ongoing series of opportunities." Kansas has started the next phase of renovations to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, according to the Lawrence Journal-World’s Chad Lawhorn, who notes demolition work on the east grandstands saw crews removing “about three-quarters of the top portion,” while the “far southern end of the grandstands had been fully removed.” As part of the project, which “appears to remain on schedule,” the entire east side of the stadium will be “removed to make way for a new set of seats and suites to roughly match the west side of the stadium,” which was rebuilt and opened to the public this season. Last week, KU leaders also got “key construction document” approval from the Kansas Board of Regents, granting the Jayhawks the “official authority to build new parking and a new public plaza on the east side of the stadium.” The project includes “two levels of parking totaling about 640 spaces on the east side of the stadium” as well as an approximately 20K square-foot “plaza area that will be located along the eastern edge of the stadium,” which has been touted “as a new gathering place for both the KU and Lawrence community.” (link)

Ohio AD Slade Larscheid tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini he was unaware of former Football HC Brian Smith’s alleged misconduct when he accepted the position in September, stating: "I was surprised at what came out, but I feel very confident that university leadership acted accordingly, and we’re moving forward." Larscheid, who personally informed the team of the decision, indicated the coaching search will intensify following Tuesday’s Frisco Bowl against UNLV. (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wolken weighs in on the discontinuation of the USC-Notre Dame football series, offering the following: “Consider this scenario. 9-2 USC beats 10-1 Notre Dame in the last game of the 2026 season so both are 10-2. As a result, the committee ranks USC 11th and ND 12th due to head to head. Yet due to the CFP MOU, ND jumps USC to get the playoff spot. So why would you play them?” The Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje notes that “this scenario was definitely given consideration,” adding: “USC and Notre Dame were close to announcing a continuation of their rivalry earlier this season. … USC was ready to compromise and play the ’26 game in November. But then USC learned of ND’s agreement w/ the CFP to have a guaranteed spot if in the top 12. In light of Notre Dame’s agreement re: CFP, which USC hadn’t been aware of, USC reversed course on its plan to compromise and insisted that the ND game be played in Week Zero in 2026. A source said they felt ND’s agreement was ‘a material advantage’ that could disadvantage USC. USC’s calculus changed considerably on the day of the CFP selection. USC was already on the fence about a compromise. Then concerns emerged over what the committee was rewarding vs punishing, a source said. Namely, how the committee might punish a late-season loss to ND. Had Notre Dame had its new agreement with the CFP committee in place in 2025, the Irish would’ve gotten in over Miami, who beat them earlier in the season. That scenario was a concern to USC.” (link, link)

Champion of Westwood Founder Ken Graiwer joined the Bruin Report Online podcast to discuss the collective's renewed involvement with UCLA football following the hiring of HC Bob Chesney. Graiwer described the return as driven by "full alignment" with the administration, noting that previously dormant donors are now engaging and the program will be armed with a "war chest of toys that has not been seen before" for NIL. While declining to confirm specific payroll figures, Graiwer emphasized that assets for Chesney's staff are "exponentially greater than ever before" and "should very well be in that ballpark" of the top tier. Addressing men's basketball, Graiwer acknowledged there is a fundraising gap relative to some competitors but explained: “We know the goal that we have to get to and I would tell you we're well on track to the lower end of it. … I know what we're forecasting, and what we're forecasting is ridiculously good compared to where it was." Pablo Torre reports federal legislation may be proposed in 2026 that would regulate prop bets. From Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI): "In just a few years, sports betting has grown into a billion-dollar industry, changing the way fans engage with sports, while providing new revenue streams for leagues. But when every in-game moment and outcome can be wagered on, it creates real risks. Integrity is essential to competitive sport, and recent allegations about gambling in the NBA and MLB have made it clear we need federal protections. We're working on legislation to stop the kind of prop betting that gives a single bad actor the ability to manipulate a specific, singular outcome for a big payout. This is about protecting fans and restoring public trust in sports." (link)
