Hero Sports’ KC Smurthwaite profiles Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill and his forward-looking strategy to sell a conference-wide jersey patch sponsorship rather than leaving institutions to navigate the market individually. Wistrcill has pitched nearly a dozen companies on the concept and says: “We’re talking hundreds of millions of impressions. From August to mid-June. One sponsor, next to the Big Sky logo, for every student-athlete. It becomes part of an overall identity. ... It’s still playing for the front of the jersey. This just helps keep the lights on." The plan involves negotiating with existing multimedia rights holders to carve out the asset, with the goal of generating a collective payout larger than the sum of individual school deals. If a partnership isn't secured by early 2026, rights will revert to the institutions. Wistrcill also talks about questions regarding expansion and realignment, which inevitably come up, and says: “We’re proud of who we are. You always have to be looking down the street, around the corner. The future is hard to predict. … There’s always going to be a home for schools like ours. There are too many like us.” More. (link)

Cowboy State Daily’s David Madison examines how Wyoming is navigating the NIL era with a "Moneyball" approach, necessitated by its isolated geography and limited corporate base compared to rivals like Colorado State or BYU. Cowboys AD Tom Burman explains that the “middle of America struggled with [NIL]. I think it has a little bit to do with a conservative nature and style. They just were like, 'I'm not sure who I'm giving this money to. I don't feel comfortable with it.'" Now, Burman notes, the department is “seeing people say to us, ‘OK, if I can give the money to Cowboy Joe (the UW fundraising arm), I'll up my annual Cowboy Joe donation.’ If you ask me where we are a year from now, we'll have caught up significantly to our competition." Looking toward the future, Burman envisions an eventuality whereby the “top 40-ish spin off — basically the Big Ten, SEC. And they invite a few others that have great television markets and maybe some with great traditions, but a lot will be left out. Whether that number is 40 or 60, I don't know. But I think that happens someday. And then the rest of us recalibrate and build what I would call a more traditional college model." More. (link)

More from U.S. Council on Athletes’ Health (USCAH) President and CEO/Big Ten CMO Jim Borchers with Inside Higher Ed. On the topic of money, the integrity of college athletics and what lies ahead: “In the United States, sport is so much a part of what the community is and how people identify with an institution. But the financial markets are creating a transactional nature to it. I think most college athletes just want sport to continue to be part of their college experience, because it’s what they’ve known. They want to go to school, have a peer group and play a sport they enjoy. When it becomes a financial vehicle, there’s a whole different aspect to sport because now your efforts and what you’re doing in sport are objectively equated with a dollar amount. And how do we reconcile those two? It’s really challenging. Now that you have athletes in college making seven figures, they’re probably the financial engine for their families. Their purpose and why they’re there has changed. Not that sport hasn’t always been a big part of the collegiate experience, but if you’re paying somebody $1M or $500K to participate in sport, I don’t think they’re going to have much focus on any of the other reasons why they’re in college.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini explains that while Football HC Kenny Dillingham’s amended contract was forwarded to Dillingham and his agent at the end of the regular season, talks began in October about how they wanted to prepare for next season. By the time the Arizona game rolled around, the framework of a deal was already in place. Most important to Dillingham was keeping his staff in place, as evidenced by the bump up to $11M for the AC pool. Rossini: "I was surprised that there was a lot of what I thought was misinformation and false narrative out there that there was a standoff. That there were aspects of the deal that were never there to begin with. Keeping Kenny was an absolute priority for me. It was a priority for [ASU President] Dr. [Michael] Crow. It was never a conversation that we had about letting him move on. Like he said yesterday, he was never offered a job. It was more about giving our coaches the tools to do their job at the highest possible level. In our business, leadership matters." (link)

Valley News’ Michael Coughlin Jr. observes that a “resurgence in athletics at Dartmouth could be in progress – even if there have been fits and starts.” Big Green AD Mike Harrity notes: “Look, we have a lot of work to do, absolutely. But I believe that everybody recognizes that it is a new day.” Coughlin notes the turnaround is highlighted by the performance of the women’s soccer program under HC Taylor Schram – Harrity’s first hire – which just earned its first NCAA Tournament berth in 20 years. Harrity has also overseen a men's hockey revival (the Big Green are off to an 11-1 start) after extending HC Reid Cashman despite early struggles. Harrity acknowledges that every program is different, but one way all programs can try to improve is by seeking answers from within. “We have spent a lot of time trying to create opportunities for our coaches to share ideas with each other, to sharpen each other’s approaches.” The department has added over 11 full-time positions to the Dartmouth Peak Performance student-athlete support program, and Harrity notes that while the program predates his tenure, he was eager to enhance it: “It’s an infinite game, it’s not like we’re ever going to wake up one day and say, ‘OK, this is done, we’ve done all we can to maximize our students’ potential. It’s human development — that’s the fun of it." (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that the BPS Foundation, a charity companion to NIL collective operator Blueprint Sports, funneled nearly $35M in NIL payments to 150 college athletes in 2024 before shutting down last December. Tax filings reveal the foundation generated $41.3M in revenue (more than double its 2023 intake) and routed $34.9M through the for-profit Blueprint Sports, with an additional $3.9M spent on "management fees" covering staff salaries. The foundation also distributed funds to university-affiliated entities, including $1.6M to Boston College, $1.05M to the Kansas University Endowment Association, and $855K to the University of Maryland Foundation. The dissolution followed an IRS memo challenging the tax-exempt status of collectives, a move that similarly impacted Georgia’s Classic City Collective, which brought in $16.1M in 2024 contributions, and Notre Dame’s FUND, which brought in $6.2M, down from roughly $20M the prior year. Ole Miss set a pair of records at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium during the first round of the College Football Playoff. First, the announced attendance of 68,251 for the win over Tulane broke the stadium record of 68,138, which was set Nov. 15 against Florida. Second, the school claimed a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing Santa Claus hats. The previous record was 33,033 at an Anaheim Angels game. Meanwhile, SBJ reports that at Texas A&M, the attendance of 104,122 for Saturday’s game against Miami (FL) was the second-largest crowd in CFP history, trailing 106,013 at last year’s SMU-Penn State game in State College. At Oklahoma, 83,550 watched Alabama beat the Sooners. In Eugene, 55,124 fans watched Oregon defeat James Madison. (link)

Netflix VP of Sports Gabe Spitzer, appearing on a podcast with Puck’s John Ourand, reiterated that the streamer’s live sports strategy remains focused on marquee events rather than season-long volume, stating: "For us, at least for right now, a more random game on a Friday night is not necessarily the same for us as [MLB] Opening Night or a Home Run Derby." Spitzer explained that live games must win a "battle for attention" against internal hits like Stranger Things and Squid Game, effectively ruling out interest in local rights or RSN-style packages. Regarding talent, Spitzer cited the non-exclusive hiring of Elle Duncan as a blueprint: “We wanted to say, ‘Hey, if you have an amazing opportunity, if you can go work the WNBA Finals somewhere else and it doesn’t conflict with one of our dates, go do that. So I think that’s going to be our approach to talent – it’s okay if you are somewhere else.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey takes a stab on X at how to “reset” the industry, which includes removing the FBS from under the NCAA, promotion & relegation, unite media rights, move the transfer portal window to the end of the spring, collective bargaining, a true salary cap & more: “Always a solution...at minimum worth a discussion. The front porch of our communities and states have too much value…we represent something bigger than ourselves. [...] Insanity isn’t the solution. The bottom is when you stop digging.” Dickey also thoughtfully engaged with many who responded to his framework. Worth your time. (link)
|
North Alabama AD Josh Looney responds to Dickey about moving the transfer window to the end of the spring: “The lowest-hanging fruit for all divisions to adopt. Values education through a full academic year at one institution, better supports progress toward degree across all levels, allows athletes time to make significant athletic and academic decisions, and respects the football calendar for FBS, FCS (and many D2/D3) programs. Yet, this fall, that option was bypassed and Jan. 2–16 was chosen instead. How is that a better outcome?” (link)

“I’m tired of the sleeping giant narrative. I’m tired of the concept of, ‘Man, they have so much potential.’ I want us to be the group — meaning athletic department, coaching staff, fan base, community — that wakes it up once and for all. There’s just never been a better time.” That’s Arizona State AD Graham Rossini as Sun Devils Football HC Kenny Dillingham has officially agreed to an extension to stay in The Valley, turning down overtures from Michigan. Dillingham’s compensation will jump to $7.5M annually & his staff pool will increase to $11M. Dillingham went on to lobby for others across Phoenix to step up: “We need to find one of these really rich people in this city to step up and stroke a check, and I’ll do everything I can to make (them) the most famous person in the city. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. You’re telling me there’s not one person who can stroke a $20 million check right now? There’s somebody out here who can. … Somebody can step up and completely take this place from the direction it’s going to ‘Holy Cow.’” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy spent time in Norman ahead of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione’s last Sooners football game. OU President Joe Harroz provides perspective: “We’ve never seen the swing in terms of change, at least in the 30 years I’ve been an indirect part of college athletics, that we have right now. So will it change? Yes. Is it changing? Yes. … It will change, it will continue to evolve, but I think the values and the perspective will continue to be there that Joe has built in the organization.” On the topic of former AT&T boss Randall Stephenson - who is assisting with the AD search - simply taking over the OU athletic department, Harroz quipped: “Believe me, I’ve asked. Turns out we can’t afford him.” (link)

In his rev share/NIL missive to fans, UCF AD Terry Mohajir highlights a goal of welcoming 50 additional corporate partners to advance the future of Knights athletics while aligning with business strategies across three key tracks: Corporate Partnership, which provides access to marketing platforms for brand messages as well as to NIL deals enabling companies to amplify brand exposure through UCF and student-athlete assets; Corporate Donor, which includes tailored philanthropic opportunities for corporate partners looking for community impact or brand visibility through NIL; and Athlete partnership, where brands can be connected directly to student-athletes through true, third-party NIL opportunities. The rev share breakdown at NC State has been publicly released: football got $13.5M, men’s basketball received $4M and women’s basketball grabbed $1M. The Wolfpacker’s Noah Fleischman: “In turn, the other 15 Olympic sports on campus were given a figure that the coaching staffs were able to divvy up as they felt fit best by either adding more scholarships, or to pay athletes through revenue sharing or Alston payments. … Only the first $2M of increased scholarships for Olympic sports counted against the $20.5M cap.” Women’s track/cross country led the way with $932K, followed by baseball ($792K), softball and women’s swimming ($726K each) and women’s soccer ($660K) to round out the top five. Georgia Tech highlights the myriad positives from its 2025 football campaign in attendance, TV viewership, social media, ad equivalency and more. From a fan standpoint, the Ramblin Wreck’s average attendance of 47,694 was the highest at Bobby Dodd Stadium since 2015 and represented a 24.8% increase over 2024, while sellouts in its final two home games at Bobby Dodd against Syracuse and Pitt marked the first time since 2015 that the Jackets sold out multiple home games in a season. Overall, more than 25M viewers tuned in to watch GT Football during nine Nielsen-rated broadcasts with its average viewership of 2.79M ranking 19th nationally, up 34 spots from just two years ago. In seven games on ABC and ESPN, Georgia Tech averaged more than 3.4M viewers per game. Tech football managed 28.8M social media impressions, with a worldwide reach of 98.5M, over the course of 12 regular-season games. More. (link)

North Texas Football HC Neal Brown will earn $1.1M in annual base salary as part of a five-year deal, per the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, who notes Brown’s compensation will rise through additional payments that kick in starting Jan. 1, 2027. The first of those bumps is $400K, with the sum jumping to $1.15M in 2028, $1.35M in 2029 and $1.55M in 2030. Also within the deal are annual retention bonuses of $375K that are slated to start on Jan. 1, 2029. The pool for assistants is $2.9M, while an additional $744K will be available for non-coaching personnel and $312K for UNT’s strength and conditioning staff. If UNT were to terminate Brown’s contract without cause, it would be required to pay out his salary and other compensation for the first 36 months of the agreement and 60% of that sum for the last 24 months. The amount the school would be required to pay for the last 24 months will increase by 5% for every year the team wins seven games during Brown’s tenure up to 75%. More. (link)

On the latest edition of The Career Hustle, Colorado State Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations, Student Success & SWA Christina Diaz joins College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss her transition from collegiate volleyball coach to administrator, a pivot she says was spurred by the "adversity" of not landing a permanent head coaching role early in her career. Diaz applies a coaching mindset to administration, noting that she approaches adapting to new leadership styles like a "scout plan" where she must "observe, listen, and understand… tendencies" to be effective. On hiring, Diaz prioritizes candidates who are "great teammates" with integrity and communication skills, noting: "I want someone that I want to go to battle with that I'm competing with that I know that um you know when we lose we're going to be upset but we're going to quickly learn from it and when we win is going to be in the huddle and we're celebrating we're in the locker room and those type of things." Diaz advises young professionals to embrace the service nature of the industry, cautioning that "it isn't about you ultimately. We're serving a bigger picture.” More from Diaz on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

D1Baseball’s Bradley Smart details the intensifying "arms race" of player development technology in college baseball, specifically within the ACC, where programs are investing heavily to chase the standard set by Wake Forest’s pitching lab. While the Demon Deacons employ a 26-member student analytics team and a full-time biomechanist, other programs are turning to third-party partners to bridge the gap. Florida State recently became the first program to install Driveline’s Launchpad, an automated biomechanics system designed to deliver "time to insight" without the massive manpower required for a custom lab, while North Carolina is the lone NCAA representative to own a Trajekt Arc pitching robot, a machine used by 26 MLB teams that can mimic specific pitchers' arsenals. Meanwhile, Virginia joins Clemson in adopting Maven Baseball Lab technology for comprehensive biomechanical assessments. Tar Heels HC Scott Forbes emphasizes the necessity of the investment despite the high price tags: "I think you’re crazy if you don’t pay attention and continue to adapt. More importantly, you have to be able to apply it. It’s a waste of money if you can’t apply it." Lots more. (link)

Front Office Sports’ Hilary George-Parkin observes that professional teams are investing heavily in athlete recovery infrastructure as longevity becomes a core competitive and financial priority. Modern training facilities now dedicate large portions of their footprint to cryotherapy, red-light therapy, underwater treadmills, aquatherapy pools, sensory-deprivation tanks, PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) devices, and multimodality systems like the $159,500 Ammortal Chamber. Teams view recovery as essential to sustaining peak performance, extending careers, and protecting star availability amid grueling game schedules, and NBA SVP/Head of Basketball R&D Tom Ryan notes: “We’re a star-driven league, and making sure our best players are on the court for as many games, as many minutes, and as many seasons as possible is core to our business.” Life Sports Agency Co-Founder/CEO Todd Ramasar adds: “The best ability is availability.” (link)

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, “The NBA is enacting several sports betting policies to its 30 teams, including changing injury reporting rules: Teams now will be required to resubmit injury listings on game day between 11 am and 1 pm local time and update public reports every 15 minutes, sources tell ESPN.” The league is “also pushing gaming companies for changes to prop bets involving individual players, such as: limiting maximum amount that can be bet, limitations on ‘unders,’ limiting population of players and eliminating problematic bet types, like bets on an action on a single play.” (link)
