The Washington Post’s Kent Babb profiles WIN Sports Group agent Clint Dowdle, detailing his high-stakes departure from CAA and mentor Jimmy Sexton to establish a rival power base that now represents a quarter of SEC head coaches. Babb highlights Dowdle's navigation of the recent coaching carousel, specifically how Florida pivoted from Sexton client Lane Kiffin to Dowdle client Jon Sumrall, a move consummated via a secret meeting at New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Here’s more nuggets…
➤ Dowdle on his exit from CAA: “Being an agent, really is an individual sport.”
➤ One head coach recounts what Sexton told him when deciding between the two agents: “Don’t you ever want to coach in the SEC?”
➤ Texas A&M HC Mike Elko: “In my mind, I was with Clint. I wasn’t with CAA.”
➤ Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman: “There was no question with me in terms of my loyalties, right? It wasn’t to a company. It was a person. Wherever that person went, I was going to follow. Trust is earned, and Clint earned my trust.”
➤ New Auburn Football HC Alex Golesh: “Isn’t it all the same after a while? With him, it has never felt like, ‘How fast can I make as much as I can?’ He’s not a money-hungry a--hole, and when he calls an AD, the ADs think he’s one of them. When he calls a coach, the coaches feel like he’s one of them. That’s crazy unique in this profession. Like, crazy, crazy unique.”
➤ Lots more, including this from a Power 4 AD on Sexton: “He’s always manipulating: the timing, the circumstances, the situation. He’s just wonderfully charming. Then there’s a time when things get real that he’s like a viper. Jimmy is the very best at putting you in a vise that you’ve created and then squeezing you to death with it.” (link)

Syracuse AD John Wildhack acknowledged on ESPN Radio Syracuse that fan "disappointment" has contributed to the men's basketball program's attendance decline, with the team averaging 15,594 fans through nine home games (down from 18,888 last year) and posting sub-14K crowds for five straight contests, a low not seen since the Dome opened in 1980. While citing factors like 9 PM weeknight tipoffs and weather, Wildhack conceded the four-year NCAA Tournament drought and a recent home loss to Hofstra have dampened enthusiasm. On the 9 PM starts: “I don’t like those at all. We’ve got two more. I don’t like that, and I’ve conveyed that to the conference. That impacts attendance. We’ve had some weather issues. But some of it is fans are somewhat disappointed at where we are.” (link)

While applauding the football seasons of James Madison and Tulane, former Florida State QB/CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell posited that it is “crystal clear the best outcome for everyone is to have a Group of 5 playoff and crown their own national champion,” drawing this response from Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey: “No coincidences. Consistent messaging. They are being honest… believe them when they say it because this is what the powers to be want. Self-perpetuating cycle. The system they created benefits them more than others and they expect us to be happy with the scraps… now they want the scraps too.” In response to a commenter who contends Dickey will take a Power 4 job the first time he’s offered one and consequently change his tune, Dickey writes: “Have had opportunities to leave for a P4 multiple times and am honored and grateful to lead my team and Bronco Nation. Industry needs wartime generals… no fear.” The same commenter contended that the “old UCF AD (Danny White)” used to echo Dickey’s G5 sentiments but has not since taking over at Tennessee, to which Dickey responded: “‘Old UCF AD” was vocal recently about collective bargaining… an elite AD and very much speaks to what he believes. You speak of things you do not know unfortunately. Merry Christmas!” (link)

Milwaukee AD Amanda Braun's role as chair of the 12-member NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee is a “prestigious position and a tremendous honor,” while also illustrating the “high regard in which she is held nationally,” per the UWM Report’s Gary D’Amato. Braun: “Especially at this time, when (the women’s game) has just taken a leap, it’s so neat being on this committee. It means a lot to me personally, and professionally it’s a cool opportunity. It’s a pretty desirable position, and so I’m really proud to be a part of it. [...] We want to get it right for all the teams that work so hard all year. And that’s more complicated than what people think. What you ultimately end up doing is comparing teams against one another and you sort of go down who are the one seeds, who are the two seeds … and it’s splitting hairs. …. The biggest concern is that we somehow don’t get it right. But we spend so much time on it, I’d be surprised if we didn’t get it very close to just right, if not exactly right. … I will tell you that I am thrilled and honored and humbled to be a part of this. But I’ll be ready when it’s done. I’ll take a break from committee work on the NCAA level for just a little while. This will be 10-plus years of being on NCAA committees. It has been an honor. And it’s fun. I like challenges and I like doing different things. But I’ll be ready for a break.” (link)

Maryland is making a priority of recruiting high school prospects from the region surrounding Washington D.C. – known as the DMV – a strategy to keep blue chip prospects close to home that’s already paying dividends for the Terps, per The Baltimore Sun’s Edward Lee. AD Jim Smith declined to discuss the amount of aid UM has provided, but noted the University is willing to battle the competition in order to secure homegrown standouts. Smith: “I think we’re doing the best we can to put something fair out for our student-athletes that want to consider coming here. Our message to them certainly is, you can be close to home, play in front of big crowds, have good opportunities for success. But ultimately, that final decision is really up to them. … This was the plan, and the plan is working. Sometimes you have a plan, and it doesn’t work, but this one is starting to come together nicely. We’ve got some pretty good momentum, and I think we’ll continue to build on this momentum.” More. The College Football Playoff first round averaged 9.9M viewers across ABC/ESPN and TNT Sports outlets. Alabama-Oklahoma led the way, averaging 14.9M viewers (16.4M peak), followed by Miami (FL)-Texas A&M, which averaged 14.8M (19.3M peak), Tulane-Ole Miss (6.2M average, 8.3M peak) and James Madison-Oregon (4.4M average, 7.2M peak). SBJ’s Austin Karp: “To be noted here: The 7% drop for the CFP First Round has as much to do with a big NFL increase as does with blowouts and G6 schools. Fox's NFL doubleheader Saturday (5pm/8pm) was up 19% from an NBC/Fox NFL doubleheader on the same day last year (albeit in a 1pm/430pm).” Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson adds: “This is why you don’t go up against the NFL! Fix it CFP.” (link, link)

A court of appeals ruling has upheld UCLA's lease with Jackie Robinson Stadium, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch. A statement from UCLA Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communication Mary Osako reads: “UCLA is pleased with the Court of Appeals’ ruling that upholds our lease with the VA. We look forward to continuing the longstanding UCLA-VA partnership that keeps Jackie Robinson Stadium the homefield for Bruins baseball and provides critical services and benefits to our Veterans in the Los Angeles region.” (link)

CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer conducts a Q&A with TCU Director of Player Personnel Tyler Olker about the football program's transfer portal strategy, which involves a staff of six evaluators who have already scouted between 500 and 1,000 players ranging from the Power 4 to NAIA levels. Olker reveals that the Horned Frogs land roughly 80% of the players the staff pre-scouted before they entered the portal. Regarding revenue sharing, Olker notes the department utilizes "slot values" for specific roster positions: “Starter, backup, third string, all that stuff. We try to shoot for that. It's kind of a fluid number. Obviously there are guidelines and things you want to work through and work towards, but it can be manipulated, both having to go over or saving and going under." With the elimination of the spring window, Olker emphasizes the accelerated timeline for internal roster management: “Developmental guys where you like to go through the spring, see how they progress and develop before maybe taking a transfer, you have to make that decision now. So, that might now be your bowl prep or your last few weeks of the season. You need to see X, Y and Z things out of (your young players). But decisions are going to have to be made earlier than they have been in the past. You don't have that safety net to continue to evaluate." Lots more. (link)

College baseball leaders have already been in dialogue with Major League Baseball over the possibility of “structural change at the professional level that could affect the college game, including scenarios that could involve fewer draft rounds or further contraction of the minor leagues” with the upcoming expiration of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement on Dec. 1, 2026. Per Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner, “college baseball is no longer positioned simply as an alternative pathway for players, but as a competitive one, both in terms of resources and outcomes.” ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz: “We’re very supportive of some of the talks we’re hearing from Major League Baseball. The owners and the players association and others still have a lot to iron out, but at least from our perspective, for the college game, we think it has a chance to be really great and productive. … We’re eager to continue to be a part of the conversation. But, again, we’re really excited about what this could do for our game on all fronts. I think baseball fans are going to continue to gravitate toward the product we have in amateur baseball.” More. The Chicago Blackhawks have become the first North American pro sports team to partner with a prediction-market platform, striking a deal with Kalshi that includes IP rights, social cross-promotion, and advertising during broadcasts and home games at the United Center. The NHL previously signed league-level agreements with both Kalshi and rival Polymarket in October, a strategy Commissioner Gary Bettman defended as providing "control" to remove inappropriate contracts. Front Office Sports’ Ben Horney notes the move stands in sharp contrast to the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NCAA, all of which have resisted prediction markets due to integrity concerns, with NCAA President Charlie Baker recently calling the sector's lack of oversight potentially "catastrophic." How Wyoming is navigating NIL with a "Moneyball" approach
|
Cowboy State Daily’s David Madison examines how Wyoming is utilizing data analytics and creative recruiting to remain competitive in Division I as NIL and revenue sharing reshape college sports. Facing a smaller corporate base and donor resistance compared to rivals like Colorado State and BYU, the athletic department is focusing on a "value-based" approach to maximize its limited resources.
• "Moneyball" in Laramie: Men’s basketball coach Sundance Wicks has adopted an analytical recruiting model inspired by the Oakland A’s and Oklahoma City Thunder, using the Gini coefficient to structure roster pay and identifying undervalued talent who prioritize playing time over maximum NIL dollars.
• Cultural and Structural Hurdles: AD Tom Burman noted that Wyoming’s "conservative style" and lack of large-scale corporate ad budgets—often 10x smaller than those in cities like San Diego—initially slowed NIL adoption, though fans are beginning to embrace giving directly through the Cowboy Joe Club.
• A "Magical Scenario" or Relegation: Burman envisions a future where the top 40-60 schools might spin off into a "Premier League," leaving programs like Wyoming to either build a "magical scenario" through smart retention and local support or recalibrate into a more traditional college model.

SMU AD Damon Evans visited with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy for a Q&A to discuss the school’s new venture, Mustang Partners, and what it allows SMU to do. Evans points to an expansion of premium amenities and areas, licensing and special events as areas of focus for the new venture, adding: “We can better leverage our assets through Mustang Partners, but not just leveraging the assets that athletics has, but leveraging university assets as well that better position the university and athletics to drive more revenue. That’s beneficial for the whole. A lot of times when you’re doing sponsorships, the typical thing is to say, ‘Hey, we want a company to go out there and for this number of clicks and views that this sponsorship is going to cost you $50K to $100K. And then you kind of move on. We’re looking to build a partnership with people from this perspective with businesses. How do we take a partnership with a local business or corporation and not only tie that into athletics, but tie that into the university as a whole to where we’re leveraging assets on the university, whether that be a school like the Cox School of Business here on campus that we could tie into with a particular partner out there in the community?” More from Evans. The future of North Carolina’s Dean E. Smith Center has been a hot topic over recent weeks with three key stakeholder meetings having occurred over a short span: one with the Rams Club; a Dec. 15 call with former players; and another that was a mix of players and donors, per The News & Observer’s Shelby Swanson, who notes AD Bubba Cunningham described the players call as “very good.” Cunningham: “I think the meetings we’ve had have been helpful to make sure we get it right. I think everybody wants what’s best for Carolina basketball. And you need an awful lot of input to be sure that you get it right.” The player video conference occurred days after a group identifying itself as “Tar Heels Concerned for the Future of the Dean E. Smith Center and Carolina Basketball” submitted an open letter to [UNC Chancellor Lee] Roberts opposing any move of the Smith Center off campus, specifically to the Carolina North site — the 250-acre parcel located near the now-defunct Horace Williams Airport. Swanson: “In the past few months, heavy momentum existed in favor of moving the Smith Center to Carolina North. That momentum has stalled amid more introspection and stakeholder input.” Cunningham: “I don’t think we’re going to rush it. We’re going to make sure that we hear and make a decision that the university community is excited about. When we get to that point, that’s when we’ll decide.” (link)

North Florida AD Nick Morrow sits down with the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union’s Garry Smits and says of the Ospreys’ NIL challenges: “Before we opted into the new NCAA model, we couldn't hand out any NIL money because we didn't have a collective. … Our goal, really, is, can we get a pot of money that instead of losing five or six players a year, we get to keep half of them? … In the off-season, or when we start talking to our guys about trying to retain them, or we go to the portal, we're now going to have a pot of money to work with. That's exciting. We can be competitive within our league.” On the idea of a transfer fee: “I would love a transfer fee. Yeah, we develop, and you guys [Power Four schools] pay us a transfer fee to bring it in. But I don't think it's realistic. I think the Power Four will go and create their own league before they're going to get involved in transfer fees for the mid-majors. … At this point, you just have to kind of embrace it, but also use that to help recruit the next guy. Because if you can go, ‘Look, I've sent five guys in the past three years to power four programs, made a lot of money, got a lot of exposure.’ That's where we're at, and it's not going backwards.” More from Morrow. NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach offers this context on the USC-Notre Dame football series hiatus: “A person with direct knowledge of the communications between the Big Ten Conference office and schools confirmed … that all 18 schools received the full language of the CFP MOU, which was unanimously supported by all current and incoming members in March 2024. USC source disputes this. USC cites new information about the MOU (in past few weeks) & CFP selection process overall as key reasons it didn’t want to play Notre Dame late in the season.” (link)

Coaches are getting increasingly creative about adding talent by searching for second semester solutions to patch holes resulting from injury, suspension or even slumping starters, per SI’s Kevin Sweeney, who notes that more than 10 high-major teams have “kicked the tires on midseason options as well as a smattering of schools at lower levels.” USC Men’s Basketball HC Eric Musselman: “We need another body. The semester ends on Wednesday. If we can somehow get another player, I’d like to get that done, too, if we can make that happen.” Sweeney: “All this represents a significant uptick in activity compared to just a few years ago, when the very rare midseason adds were almost always redshirting players who either graduated high school early or came from the southern hemisphere and finished school in the winter. But as the NCAA has relaxed eligibility requirements and allowed more former professional players to join the college ranks, the pool of players potentially available has grown exponentially.” DraftExpress Director of Scouting Jon Chepkevich: “Everyone is incentivized to make it happen if there’s an appealing situation in college where they can play and have a meaningful role. Or even just get to the U.S., get acclimated for a few months in an NCAA atmosphere, and then survey their options in the portal come spring.” More. (link)

Missouri Football student-athlete Damon Wilson II has sued the Georgia Athletic Association as part of an NIL contract dispute, countering a lawsuit filed by UGA in early December seeking arbitration to get $390K in alleged damages from Wilson after the player signed an agreement to return to Athens before entering the transfer portal a month later. Per The Athletic’s Matt Baker and Seth Emerson, “Wilson’s attorneys allege a civil conspiracy involving the Bulldogs and Georgia’s collective to try to ‘penalize Wilson for his decision to transfer.’ The suit alleges that they interfered with his ability to enter the portal and lied about his NIL buyout.” Wilson attorney Jeff Jensen: “Georgia appears intent on making an example of someone, they just picked the wrong person. Damon never had a contract with them. I don’t see how Georgia thinks intimidation and litigation will help their recruitment efforts — maybe players could bring lawyers with them to practice.” Wilson’s attorneys allege he “lost out on endorsement opportunities and NIL revenue and suffered emotional and mental distress caused by the Bulldogs’ false claims” and are seeking a “fair and reasonable amount of damages” for the “financial and reputational harm he has suffered” along with legal fees. This complaint appears to be the first time a player has sued a school regarding an NIL deal. More. (link)

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Judges Guido Calabresi, Gerard E. Lynch and Sarah A. L. Merriam last week affirmed the dismissal of an antitrust lawsuit brought by former Kansas Men’s Basketball student-athlete Mario Chalmers and 15 other former college basketball players over their NIL usage in ads, broadcast and other commercial purposes. Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the biggest problem facing lawsuits such as the one filed by Chalmers is that too much time has passed. “Antitrust claims are subject to a four-year statute of limitations. The players sued on July 1, 2024, which means the statute of limitations reaches back to July 1, 2020. The last day any player in this case was enrolled at an NCAA-affiliated university was in 2016. … The three judges disagreed with Chalmers that the alleged damages caused by signing away NIL rights were so speculative that they justify extending the statute of limitations,” while also pointing out “there have been other cases brought against the NCAA over restrictions on athlete compensation—such as the Alston case, which involved compensation for education-related expenses—but Chalmers’ group waited until 2024. The judges quoted [Judge Paul A.] Engelmayer saying these players ‘sat on their hands for more than a decade before bringing this lawsuit.’” More. (link)
