Colorado’s Board of Regents is set to meet this morning & one agenda item is the approval of a contract for a new AD, which is expected to be New Mexico’s Fernando Lovo. Of note on Lovo’s short, but productive tenure in Albuquerque: “Overall, Lovo led a record fundraising year for the Lobos and guided the entire athletic department to a 49th-place finish in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, the highest finish for any Group of Five school.” (link)

The Santa Fe New Mexican’s Will Webber points out the irony of New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo’s exit given Lovo’s "real ones" campaign, which was designed to celebrate the loyalty of those who remained with the football team following former HC Bronco Mendenhall’s exit to Utah State: "Now it seems the architect of the real ones is discounting himself as one who chose to stay, proving the point that winners don’t come to New Mexico to stay — they come here to chill at an Airbnb long enough to get a better deal in a place where the grass is greener. Some will say it’s no fault of Lovo, of (former AD Eddie Nuñez), of Bronco, of Richard Pitino, of Arthur Dent, Tru Washington, Devon Dampier — of any of them. None of us takes a job in the warehouse without dreams of someday having an office with a view. It’s human nature to chase the best way forward. Lobo fans have seen it more times than they care to admit, from Joe Morrison to Dennis Franchione, Steve Alford and so many others. … It really does come down to one thing: The only ‘real ones’ are the fans who continue to show up, to drive six-plus hours to Phoenix the day after Christmas, to continue to make The Pit rock and the Olympic sports continue to roll. Fans can’t enter a portal. Their colors are inked on, and their only hope is that enough of these one- and two-year wonders come along over the decades to sustain some sort of winning tradition.” (link)

College Football Playoff administrators are making a last push to expand the postseason format for the 2026 season ahead of a firm Jan. 23 deadline set by ESPN, The Athletic’s Ralph Russo reports. With the current 12-team model as the default, negotiations hinge on bridging the gap between the SEC, which favors a 16-team field with minimal automatic qualifiers, and the Big Ten, which has pivoted to advocating for a 24-team model that Russo notes is feasible by 2027 at the earliest and features multiple AQs. Russo also points out that if the field remains at 12 for 2026, new guidelines will guarantee spots for Power 4 champions and Notre Dame (if ranked in the top 12), leaving only one berth for the highest-ranked Group of 5 champion, a provision that would have prevented this year’s Tulane/JMU scenario. Overall, Russo submits that the “odds of expansion seem to be increasing, but this is still very much an active negotiation,” and one person familiar with the discussions says: “Expansion is a necessity. The question is when and how?” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel explains to MLive.com’s Aaron McCann that he “asked the president to help with a cultural analysis and have somebody come in” following former Football HC Sherrone Moore’s dismissal. “So yes, I am very supportive of that. Because as a leader, I face reality. There are things that happened; I don’t step away from that. Never have, never will.” Manuel says the timing of the coaching search was suboptimal, but noted that “one of the sad things about what we're going through right now in college athletics is the timing. When you see a coach leave his team that's going into the CFP because we now have a signing day in the beginning of December. And then we have a portal in January doing all of this. We need to get better in college athletics. We are causing our own problems and our own confusion and our own twists and changes. Instead of kids being down here in bowls and going through their bowl preparation, we're introducing a new coach because we have to. Because of the calendar. They need to know who their coach is. … I've talked to some of my colleagues about it. And I think there's a movement now to understand that we really need to make sure we adjust that and do better in college.” (link, link)

In light of Extra Points’ Matt Brown noting that $10M is a “number I’ve heard from a few AD types as the price for ‘buying into’ an FBS league these days,” Hero Sports’ Sam Herder notes that “one of the *rumors/whispers/scuttle* around [North Dakota State] to FBS is that NDSU has reached out to its top donors to secure a large amount of money to make the FBS jump. And it’s much higher than the $5M reclassification fee. Whether this is true, just a PR push from someone with skin in the game, or a half-truth, we’ll see.” (link)

As part of the Navigating Sports Business podcast, Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and VP of Consulting Charles Rolston sit down to discuss the state of college sports and various paths forward including revenue sharing, super leagues, athlete employment and more. On potential for the creation of a college super league, Maestas remarks: “The threat is there. I don't know about $270M per university on average, but I think some of these super league efforts are overstating what can be drawn out of the media marketplace…but yeah, the temptation is there, and I do think it's true that some consolidation, right, that collective bargaining, you know, like not splintering those rights among so many conferences, playing tougher schedules, I think create a better scheduling essentially overall, especially the non-conference games. I think there's a bunch of ways that a lot more money is on the table there, and that's before you get into other things that could be run more efficiently. This is a positive for the effort and what the Big Ten is trying to do, right, in creating an entity that sells sponsorships. Look at the way the pro leagues do these activities, and you know, if you're to do that for a super conference, would it yield more dollars than currently today? Yeah, the answer is yes. So it's a threat. It's a threat and a heck of a temptation for some of those schools that would definitely be included in a super league to not only step forward as they will with their next television deal, but maybe even go further. Yeah, it's very real and the private equity money will be there.” (link)

Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo was asked about James Nnaji enrolling at Baylor after being selected in the 2023 NBA Draft but never signing an NBA contract, opting instead to play overseas and for the G League. Izzo believes this is unfair to the current players and says he’s put a call into Bears HC Scott Drew, adding: “I’m anxious to see what he tells me. … What I’m hearing and now we’re taking guys that were drafted in the NBA and everything, I said to you a month and a half ago, ‘Come on, Magic [Johnson] and Gary [Harris], let’s go, baby. Let’s do it.’ Why not? If that’s what we’re going to do, shame on the NCAA. Shame on the coaches, too, but shame on the NCAA because coaches are going to do what they’ve got to do, I guess, but the NCAA’s the one – those people on those committees who are making those decisions to allow something so ridiculous and not think of the kid.” Izzo goes on to say he was told by a “very famous” coach who believes in everything Izzo is saying, but to not “let it ruin your year. Why fight City Hall? I’m not going to fight City Hall. I’m just not going to stick up for it either. … Leadership is making decisions that are against — I’d like to poll 360 of the coaches and see how many are in favor of what’s going on.” (link)

Puck’s Dylan Byers surveys 173 C-suite and executive media insiders on the future of the industry and highlights a decisive pivot toward audience revenue as the primary driver over the next five years. Specifically, 34% of respondents expect subscriptions/memberships to eclipse advertising (27%) as their biggest revenue stream, with nearly half (43%) favoring "focused niche" strategies over the "one big product" flagship model. Other key findings include:
➤ ESPN’s Future: The industry is split on ESPN, with one-third predicting joint ventures will define its next chapter, while equal shares (24% each) bet on either the resilience of linear carriage or the rise of a flagship DTC product.
➤ Video/Streaming Dominance: 40% identify video/streaming as the biggest growth area in advertising, far outpacing contextual targeting (31%) and podcasts (7%).
➤ The End of Social Distribution: Only 17% expect social platforms to be their strongest audience relationship in five years, compared to 53% for owned-and-operated platforms.
➤ Warner Bros. Discovery Skepticism: 45% view David Ellison's pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery as logical consolidation, but 36% fear it's a "risky overreach" given debt loads and streaming uncertainty.
➤ AI Anxiety: Respondents overwhelmingly cited "diminished content quality" (39%) and "misinformation risks" (33%) as their top concerns regarding AI's impact, with one insider predicting "A.I. experiments will flop and disintegrate into A.I. slop."

Colorado is “targeting” New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo to become the next AD in Boulder, per Yahoo's Ross Dellenger, who adds: “No deal is finalized and UC Board of Regents must authorize any move.” (link)
|
The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer writes on Lovo’s potential exit for Colorado after just over one year leading New Mexico: “The Journal confirmed with multiple sources in and around UNM — both within and outside the athletics department — that Lovo to Colorado appears to be a done deal, though the AD has not returned messages from the Journal.” Grammer goes on to point out Lovo may owe UNM up to $800K as a buyout & there’s a notable provision in the new extension for Lobos Football HC Jason Eck: “The new contract for Eck, who has been rumored for numerous head coaching vacancies, takes effect Jan. 1 and there would be a $4 million buyout if he were to leave before Dec. 31, 2026. But, if Lovo is gone for any reason, that buyout drops to $2 million. The clause holds true for 12 months from the day Lovo officially leaves UNM, but stays at $4 million if Eck leaves for a job wherever Lovo is employed.” (link)

“It may not seem like it, but at my core, I'm a traditionalist. I love college athletics for the opportunities it provides, for the on-the-field competition, for the game day experience that it brings. But ultimately, we have to evolve the tactics that we deploy to protect the traditional parts of the athletic enterprise that we all love.” That’s Michigan State AD J Batt to the Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch in an interview that includes discussion on major changes for the Spartans since Batt’s arrival. On the new Spartan Ventures: “I would just say that, at the end of the day, first and foremost, this is a very different deal than what people might be reading about for other deals. This is not a private equity deal. This is an aligned opportunity in which we continue to maintain all control of the athletic department, coaches, student-athletes, that's all within the athletic department today. It's well-aligned with our mission. It continues to serve our student-athletes in the best way possible. We're simply optimizing our opportunities.” More. (link)

The Athletic's Stewart Mandel & Ralph Russo caught up with agents, leaders of collectives & GMs to get a sense of how some departments are working around the $20.5M revenue share cap. Four examples: “1) Say a school agrees to pay a player $200,000. If his agent is taking a 20 percent commission, then in reality, he’s making $160,000. So, the collective pays the agent his fee directly, and the program saves $40,000 in cap space; 2) Say a school promises a player $200,000, and wants to split it between rev-share and the collective, but it fears that CSC won’t approve a $100,000 collective deal. The parties agree to the amount verbally, then the collective submits smaller deals throughout the year (for autograph signings, charity appearances, etc.) that eventually add up to the total; 3) It’s believed that at least one school’s collective paid their entire incoming freshman class what they would have earned in rev share, so that the payments don’t get counted against the cap; and, 4) And then there’s the simplest, but riskiest, workaround of all: Just don’t report the deals. Which was probably happening already.” (link)

Cowboy State Daily’s David Madison indicates Wyoming Football is working with a $1.4M NIL budget while FCS stalwarts Montana & Montana State have around $2.2M each. Wyoming AD Tom Burman pushes back on the idea that Wyoming may be better aligned as an FCS program: “The better question is, why are Montana, Montana State begging to get into the Mountain West? I can tell you that the top tier of the FCS is willing to pay money to join the Mountain West. [...] We struggled from the time NIL started really in '22 until the end of June this past year. We struggled getting people — Wyoming fans, alumni, donors — to invest in the collective. It's just not something Wyoming people embraced.” (link)

More from Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy with KSEE24’s Scott Bemis and Angelique Martinez. On being an AD during such a volatile period for the industry: “I feel like in higher ed, and especially in college athletics, there’s been a lot of people for a lot of years that don’t want to take advantage of these changes. I think we can find a competitive edge, and anything that we can find a competitive edge in, we’re gonna attack it. We can’t control the changes that are coming. All we can do is attack them and prepare for what’s next. That’s how we’re looking at it. Is it more difficult, does it add more hours to the day? Absolutely, but at the end of the day, it’s always going to be about the student-athlete experience and we do need a national standard. … We can’t just keep operating the Wild, Wild West. We thought the House settlement was gonna fix that. It’s fixed some of it, but you're seeing head coaches that are getting new contracts, there’s money guaranteed above and beyond the revenue sharing piece, and I don’t know how they’re doing that legally. … So, we just have to make sure that there’s a national standard, everyone’s playing by the same rules. That’s the only way college football and college sports are gonna maintain the greatness that we have right now.” (link)

During the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl press conference yesterday, Penn State Deputy AD Vinnie James provided an update on the Beaver Stadium renovation, which is approaching $700M: “Right now we remain on schedule, targeting a completion date of fall of 2027. In the 2026 season, what our fans can expect to see is you’ll actually begin to see the structure of the new west side or the visiting sideline come to form. It still won’t be completed, everything that’s behind it, but that structure will really start to be showing itself and we can see the volume and magnitude of what that west side will ultimately be. A lot of the work that is going on is infrastructure work behind it. Obviously we’re going to find a great place for the writing press and make sure we’ve got you guys taken care of.” (link)

Citing “recent changes” in college athletics, New Mexico State AD Joe Fields says that A-Mountain Sports will not continue as the Aggie’s active NIL collective when 2026 begins. Leaders of A-Mountain Sports will continue working with NMSU as part of a new "centralized, department-managed model.” (link)

The Pop-Tarts Bowl is the epitome of bowl season fun & the post-game pop-tart sacrifice saw Slammin’ Strawberry jump off the jumbo toaster & opt out of the process. Fitting to say the least. BYU HC Kalane Sitake proceeded to chow down on a handful of pop-tarts. (link); Cllct Founder Darren Rovell via X: “Pop Tart executives and their experiential agency Momentum should start a business just focusing on maximizing bowl sponsorship. They run an absolute clinic around everyone.” (link)

Sportico's Michael McCann breaks down the legal arguments in the escalating dispute between Missouri football student-athlete Damon Wilson II and the Georgia Athletic Association (UGAA), which is suing Wilson for $390K over an alleged breach of a $500K NIL deal with the now-defunct Classic City Collective (CCC). Wilson's countersuit, filed in Missouri, hinges on the argument that he only signed a "non-binding" term sheet which explicitly stated it "precedes" a full License and Option Agreement that was never presented and thus no enforceable contract exists. He further contends that UGAA "weaponized" an unconscionable liquidated damages clause by falsely telling other schools he owed a $1.2M buyout to transfer, thereby tortiously interfering with his market value. UGAA, which inherited the contract rights from CCC, is expected to argue that Wilson's acceptance of a $30K payment constituted a "bargained-for exchange" that validated the agreement, including its mandatory arbitration clause. McCann adds: “Similarly, UGAA will insist the arbitration and liquidated damages provisions are reasonable in the context of NIL at a power conference school and binding. To that end, expect UGAA to note that Wilson was an adult when he signed the NIL contract/term sheet—he was 19 years old and thus not a minor—and that CCC’s recommendation he hire an attorney didn’t create an obligation on the part of CCC to stop negotiating with him if he hadn’t secured an attorney.” (link)
