Deseret News’ Joe Coles details Utah AD Mark Harlan's strategic outlook following the transition to HC Morgan Scalley as Harlan revealed he is flying to meet with Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank this week to discuss the future of their partnership—worth $65M over 10 years and expiring in 2027—noting, "Obviously, with the new [private equity] deal, again, not done, it would be foolish of me not to have conversations with them." On the Otro deal, Harlan expects to present it to trustees "later this month or the first part of next," emphasizing it will help Utah meet the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap. He also pushed back on the narrative that Utah lacks resources: "We’re right up there with everybody in revenue share. We’re also doing it in a way that keeps our integrity intact and it’s within the rules that we’re doing. … I’m real proud of a lot of the deals that are coming forward through NIL Go. We will not do anything that does not go through NIL Go as long as I’m the athletic director here. It’ll be rev share and authentic NIL, and that’s the place that we’re really focusing on.” (link)

Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin joined the Nothin’ But An App State podcast to discuss what’s in store for 2026 and explained that the university will keep football season ticket prices flat for "a couple of years" as a gesture of gratitude to a fanbase that showed up in force for the bowl game. Gillin also emphasized the necessity of generating new revenue to fund revenue sharing, noting that App State already raises as much money as anyone in the Group of 6 through self-operated concessions, merchandise, and parking. Gillin cited ancillary events like the Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert and partnerships with the Boone Bigfoots as critical non-traditional revenue streams. On the competitive landscape, Gillin highlighted the financial disparity in the transfer portal, stating that while Group of 6 schools have "somewhere between $3M and $5M to spend on rosters," Power 4 schools can fully fund the $20.5M. “We saw right out of the gate...schools telling players, 'We'll give you double what Appalachian's going to give you if you don't take that visit.” More from Gillin. Western Kentucky AD Todd Stewart remarked during a media availability that while the department is currently in a "good position," sustainable success will require growth across three pillars: individual, corporate, and university support. Stewart noted that new donors have recently stepped up to provide NIL resources for women's basketball—an area where the program previously lacked funds, leading to key roster losses—and highlighted the necessity of adapting to "unlimited free agency." Addressing the broader industry, Stewart advocated for a consolidated TV deal for college football similar to the NFL or NBA to distribute revenue more equitably: “Every conference kind of undermines each other with their own TV deal. ... If they could consolidate the TV deals, the SEC and Big 10, they would still get the most. They'd still get more than what they have right now, but others would get more, too. And it would make the game a lot healthier." (link)

The FCS title game between Montana State and Illinois State averaged 2.3M viewers on ESPN, making it the third-largest FCS championship audience ever, trailing only 2025 (2.4M, ESPN) and 2020 (2.7M, ABC). The game peaked at 3M viewers in OT. The full FCS Playoffs averaged 1.4M viewers on nationally rated ESPN networks. (link)

Washington QB Demond Williams will remain on Montlake under the one-year, $4M contract he initially agreed to, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes: “If he had left, Demond Williams or his new school would have owed Washington the value of his contract. … His new school would have also incurred a reduction in its revenue-share pool next year by that amount, per House settlement guidelines.” (link)

Washington AD Pat Chun in a statement: “The past 48 hours have underscored just how complex and challenging the current college athletics environment has become. What has transpired has been difficult for all parties involved and is emblematic of many of the current issues in college sports. It is critical in this post-House, revenue-sharing environment that contracts with student-athletes are not only enforced but respected by everyone within the college sports ecosystem.” (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon confirms that Boston College actively recruited Owen Sound Attack (OHL) goaltender Carter George as a potential midseason addition, despite George having already signed an NHL entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings. Owen Sound GM Dale DeGray revealed that Eagles HC Greg Brown told him: "If we don’t do it, somebody else will.” DeGray ultimately chose to trade George rather than risk losing him for nothing, telling McMahon: “This could happen to anybody now. … The CHL is going to have to come up with an idea to circumvent that. I was kind of stuck.” While BC reportedly attempted to push George through the NCAA eligibility center, McMahon explains the effort was likely doomed following NCAA President Charlie Baker's December 30 statement clarifying that the association "will not grant eligibility" to athletes who have signed professional league contracts. Rising exit velocities and the associated injury risks were a focal point of Day 1 at the ABCA Convention in Columbus, with Cincinnati HC Jordan Bischel saying it’s “partially dumb luck that there hasn’t already been an accident on the field due to a ball coming off of a bat at well over 100 mph. ... The hope is that the coaches can be proactive in helping come up with solutions before an accident happens on the field and solutions are thrust upon the sport by those who don’t live and breathe baseball." While no action was taken, leadership called for proactive solutions to avoid bat standard changes as drastic as the 2011 BBCOR implementation, which cratered offensive output. The meeting also revealed an experimental rule for 2026 allowing tablets in dugouts for approved tech (like TrackMan dashboards sans strike zone), and the NCAA selection committee will now have access to the Diamond Sports Ranking (DSR) metric designed by 6-4-3 Charts as a reference point. Additionally, the ABCA will survey coaches on potential blanket run rules (10 or 12 runs) and adopting an MLB-style runner-on-second rule for extra innings. (link)

The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committees met this week to propose a number of rule changes in the sport. In a desire to bring NCAA volleyball more in line with the international center line rule, the committees recommended a player's foot completely crossing the center line be ruled a fault, beginning with the 2026 season. Additionally, the committees proposed teams switch benches after the completion of the second set, while also suggesting that after the coin flip for the fifth set – where a team can choose to serve, receive or which side to compete on – the teams remain on their sides of the net the entire set. The committees also approved an experimental rule for conference games to allow the electronic transmission of live video to the bench area for coaching purposes only and approved other rules recommendations relating to topics that included video challenges, jewelry, misconduct sanctions and commercial logos on playing surfaces. Samford AD/Division I Men’s Basketball Committee Vice Chair Martin Newton participated in the SoCon Conference interview to discuss his experience on the committee so far this season. On what might be new or looked at differently in this year’s selection process: “I don't know that it's new, but the Wins Above Bubble (WAB) is something, that's one of the metrics that we're gonna spend some time on this year. We started last year really looking at that and I think they fine-tuned some of that. I think that's something that each one of the committee members is really paying attention to, and as we kind of continue to be educated and do a deep dive into that metric, will now be added to the other metrics that we use. So, I think that's going to be something that … will get utilized a lot more and get studied a lot more.” More from Newton. (link)

Highlighting Arizona State’s apparent “paradigm shift” in its seriousness about winning, the Mercury News’ Jon Wilner contacted ASU President Michael Crow to inquire if there’s been a shift in institutional thinking over football and basketball and if so, what promoted the change. Crow: “I am very strongly of the view that the system is in a moment of significant disequilibrium (unsteady and unpredictable). Given that, we are taking the path of best of class in all that we have for facilities and programs … and compete at the highest possible level while staying true to this being a university and not a professional sports team.” While highlighting 11 things Sun Devil Athletics has done to enhance competitiveness and remain student-athlete centric, including the addition of scholarships, Crow added: “When you look at us, just remember that through thick and thin, through success and failure, we have built a new kind of research university here which is great and impactful for as many students and learners as possible. And to match that, we are building athletic programs that connect with our larger Sun Devil nation.” More. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff joins the Big Business on Campus podcast with JohnWallStreet publisher Corey Leff and Playfly Chairman Michael Schreiber to discuss reducing stadium capacity and increasing per-seat yield at Booth Memorial Stadium. “We were [at] about 47K [seats] in the old stadium…and [we’re going to be] in the 43K range [next year]. For us, this [wasn’t] complicated. We want intimacy. We want no bad seats in the house. The reality in college football for a long time is you’ve had limited to no-value seating taking up a significant chunk of capacity… [Moving forward], every one of those seats [in our stadium] will drive value for Kansas athletics.” Goff also points out that “because football stadiums only operate six, seven, maybe eight [days] a year, we [built] a conference center connected to the north [side] of the stadium. That’s where —and why— the state of Kansas and some others stepped forward; they see [it] as a primary economic catalyst [for the city].” The conference center and an adjacent hotel, he adds, help to “activate this district 200-250 times or more a year. That is where we’ll see a lot of the sustainable middle-to-long-term upside.” (link)

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports “Washington State has landed a commitment from TE Nathaniel Salmon, a former professional basketball player from New Zealand, who attended mini camp with the Los Angeles Chargers.” Salmon originally started on the NFL’s International Player Pathway at the start of 2025 and was invited to Chargers’ mini-camp, but wasn’t signed. Once realizing college was an option, he went through the NCAA Clearinghouse and was granted four years of eligibility. (link)

Facility Features… ➤ Washington State recently raised more than $10M to pay for the initial phase of planned improvements inside Gesa Field that are set for completion by the start of the 2026 season, including a video board 30-feet wider than the current display, a new audio system and dynamic on-field lighting. The improvements are part of a multi-phase improvement plan for Gesa Field, which is expected to cost up to $12M. (link) ➤ Through a lead gift from the family of Bill and Ruth Scott, Creighton’s future 50K-square foot athletics facility will be named “The Bill” in honor of longtime donor Bill Scott. Construction of the $65M building, formerly known as the Sports Performance Center, got underway in the summer of 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027. When finished, the student-athlete-focused facility will feature approximately 10K-square feet of new strength and conditioning space, an outdoor training area, dining hall, areas for academic advising, sports medicine and psychology services as well as gathering spaces. Those interested in advertising during the College Football Playoff National Championship better get on the phone in a hurry as Disney Advertising SVP of Revenue and Yield Management Jim Minnich says the game’s on the brink of an ad sellout. Minnich: “We’re very well sold. We’ve got a couple avails left in Friday night’s game [the Peach Bowl], and for the championship game, we’re down to a unit or two. I don’t want to say I’m completely sold out just yet, but we’re in a much better position than we’ve been in years past.” Per Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, securing one of the remaining 30-second ad units will run in the neighborhood of $2M, and while Minnich did not make any disclosures on the pricing front, he allowed that ESPN’s scatter rates in this year’s championship are trending at a record high, powered by a season of significant ratings gains. Minnich: “In college football right now, there are no dynasties, and that’s really opened up this year’s market. Parity matters.” More. (link)
