Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides several takeaways from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s comments at the NCAA Convention yesterday, including his thoughts on the AFCA recommending increasing the redshirt threshold from four games to nine. Dellenger notes Baker “seemed to suggest that any rule change will trigger schools/athletes to attempt to exceed any new eligibility standard.” More key takeaways…
➤ Baker: "We've got people in court with us that want six years, seven years, eight years. We really do. I'm not kidding. My view on this is, unless we get to the point where everybody agrees to play by the rules, this is important and useful, but it's not sufficient."
➤ Baker adds: “The five years-to-play four, in 70% of cases it's been in court, have been successful. People start talking about 5-for-5, 6-for-6, 7-for-7, it doesn't matter if people aren't going to comply with the rules. 95% of the membership complies. The phone calls I get from coaches and ADs are pretty consistent: 'I don't like it when what judge ends up in front of and what state they're in determines whether somebody gets to play another year; that's not fair.' I have a hard time arguing with that. I'm thrilled the coaches are thinking about this, but at the end of the day, whatever we do with eligibility, everybody needs to sign off on."
➤ Baker also announced the association increased revenues by $300M over the “past couple years,” a product mostly of increased TV contracts, and Dellenger notes: “Perhaps more interesting: Baker says the FBS transfer portal has seen 23% fewer entrants as last year. Baker attributes the decrease in FBS portal entrants to the ability for schools to communicate and directly compensate athletes during the retainment process, he says - something permitted as part of the NCAA's landmark House settlement agreement.”
➤ Additionally, Baker anticipates jersey patches will be approved, and Dellenger reports that “Baker attributes the year-long momentum for jersey patches to Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark, who Baker says spearheaded the conversation. After DI Cabinet approval, each sport-specific committee will finalize the details and rules related to patches for its particular sport. In one proposal of the jersey patch legislation (there are several), schools would be permitted to have two sponsorship patches on uniforms during non-NCAA championships. These patches can feature a different sponsor for pregame warmups, in-game and post-game media events.” (link)

LSU AD Verge Ausberry discusses his first 60 days on the job, a period he describes as feeling "like two years" due to industry’s current tumult. Addressing facility needs, Ausberry confirmed that a new multi-use basketball arena is "very important" and a committee is currently evaluating how to "get it off the ground" in a way that fits the university's mission and budget. On the financial front, Ausberry noted the stark reality of inflation: “When we came here 10 years ago the money was probably $140M, $150M budget. Now it's a $200M+ budget. So, we're trying to figure out when and where this thing is going to end. But really, we can't tell that until we decide how this thing is going to look and what we’re going to do. Will you be competitive at every sport and want to win at all sports like [former Baseball HC/AD] Skip Bertman had planned? He wanted to win at everything. ... Is that still realistic today?" More from Ausberry. (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joined the Tim & Beanie Show to discuss the football program's strategy following the Cotton Bowl loss and confirms the Buckeyes signed 28 high school recruits and retained nine offensive starters. Bjork went on to express frustration with the inability to govern money in college sports, warning that restrictive rules only drive payments "underground" and suggesting that a federal framework for employment or collective bargaining may be the only long-term fix. “We can make sure that this is still about academics, have academic rules. We can do our calendar a lot better. We can probably categorize employment in some manner around these athletes and get some federal oversight from that standpoint. We need to make sure that we're protected from not being in the courtroom every single time we make a rule. ... But anytime we try to codify the money, it leads to this. It leads to chaos." More. CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello reports the Big Ten is floating a compromise to break the College Football Playoff format stalemate ahead of the Jan. 23 deadline, potentially agreeing to a 16-team field (5+11) for 2026 if the rest of the sport commits to expanding to a 24-team model within three years. This stopgap would allow conferences time to unwind lucrative media deals tied to championship games, which are expected to be eliminated in a 24-team future. While the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 favor a 16-team model with automatic qualifiers, the Big Ten has also explored a radical 24-team concept with only one AQ for the highest-ranked G6 champion—a largely open field designed to entice the SEC. Despite the maneuvering, industry skepticism remains high, with one executive noting: "Twelve, like it or not, has worked last year and this year, especially when the seeding was figured out this year after last year's debacle. It's been proven there's enough quality teams built into the current format that 12 is probably as good of a threshold right now with the current way we do things." (link)

St. John's has parted ways with Men’s Basketball GM Matt Abdelmassih following an administrative leave that began in mid-December. Red Storm AD Ed Kull declined to address the exact circumstances of what led to Abdelmassih’s dismissal, but the New York Post’s Zach Braziller and Larry Celona note the “school has been looking into financial deals made by Abdelmassih, and the decision to move on from him is believed to be at least somewhat connected.” Red Storm HC Rick Pitino: “It’s out of my hands. All I was told was four days ago, look for another general manager. They said to me, don’t ask any questions. It’s really not a big deal. What’s a big deal is making sure that we don’t lose anything. But that’s a university decision, I’ll abide by it. They didn’t ask for my opinion and I didn’t give it. I’m disappointed that somebody loses their job with four young kids, yes, but it’s not a big deal in terms of our basketball program, and we’ll move on.” (link)

“What is the largest NIL deal you’ve heard of for a college baseball player?” Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner surveyed 51 Division I coaches, assistants, and recruiting coordinators on that very question and found that while "rumors of up to a million dollars" persist, the most commonly cited figures clustered between $500K and $750K for premium talent. Overall, three respondents cited figures as high as $800K, and the most commonly cited "largest deal" heard of was $500K (14 responses), followed by $750K (11 responses). SEC-bound pitchers were identified as the most valuable assets, with one high-major coach recounting how he secured a transfer by leveraging a relationship with a local car dealership to get the player a truck as a "sweetener." However, skepticism abounds regarding inflated figures, as Rudner notes one agent admitted to intentionally embellishing numbers to secure better deals because schools lack a "reliable mechanism” for verifying competing offers. In a joint statement, Arizona President Suresh Garimella, Georgia President Jere Morehead, Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands and Washington President Robert J. Jones implore their peers to sign the College Sports Commission’s Participant Agreement. The statement reads in part: “For years, campus leaders and athletic directors have acknowledged, both quietly and out loud, that the existing model for organizing competition, distributing revenue, and supporting student-athletes simply does not work any longer. … The University Participant Agreement … addresses these problems and provides a collective path forward for the future of college athletics. … At its core, the Agreement asks institutions to do something simple but essential: play by the rules we have collectively committed to, accept accountability when we fall short, and resolve disputes through the agreed-upon process rather than prolonging costly litigation that fuels confusion and inequity. … [It] is not perfect, but it does provide a visible mechanism to turn the House settlement from principle into practice and represents a meaningful step forward that the higher education community can collectively embrace. … Some may feel the Agreement moves too quickly, but we do not have the luxury of waiting for perfection. The responsibility of leadership compels us to recognize when the cost of inaction outweighs the discomfort of progress. … It allows us to move forward together, rather than facing continued drift, escalating risk, and a system that asks student-athletes to navigate unnecessary ambiguity while institutions hesitate.” More. The Athletic’s David Ubben reports FBS HCs voted unanimously Tuesday at the AFCA Convention to “expand the eligibility for redshirt years from four games to nine,” adding: “Tuesday’s recommendation is not an official NCAA proposal but will be put in front of NCAA committees. … The NCAA has already said it will keep current eligibility rules until the end of the 2026-27 academic year. … Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman and Virginia Tech’s James Franklin were among the notable names in attendance, but multiple coaches from all Power 4 conferences and the Group of 6 attended as well.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports “the FTC has sent letters to 20 NCAA Division I schools inquiring whether agents working with their athletes have followed the public disclosure laws outlined in the Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act.” FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige: “Agents that work with student-athletes have responsibilities and legal requirements including notifying colleges and universities when their student-athletes have signed agent contracts. This inquiry is aimed at better understanding whether sports agents are complying with the law and the degree to which the student-athletes are being protected.” Responses have been requested from the schools by March 23. Several Utah faculty members recently spoke out against the Utes’ deal with Otro Capital, per The Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao and Courtney Tanner, who note the Academic Senate meeting on Jan. 5 marked the first time many said they had heard directly about the negotiations from Utah President Taylor Randall, a month following the original announcement. Utah professor Norm Waitzman, who called the deal “antithetical” to the point of a university, remarked: “I just think it’s all unfortunate, quite frankly. I think that this is a reflection of the corporatization of the university.” Batacao and Tanner: “Lisbeth Louderback, an associate professor of anthropology, questioned if the deal wouldn’t ultimately hurt the education operations of the university, drawing donors to support athletics instead of academics. ‘What if there aren’t profits?’ added Leslie Francis, a law professor. There were questions, too, about the impact on students, the possibility of ticket prices increasing for games — possibly pricing people out — and whether academic programs might be cut to come up with funding if the deal doesn’t work out.” More. ESPN wants to expand college football analyst Josh Pate’s role with the network moving forward, per Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, who notes due to his growing exposure Pate is “ultimately primed to make millions of dollars per year” as ESPN makes a push to offer more CFB talk. ESPN Senior VP Mike Foss: “We introduced Josh into the fold for this football season, on a short-term deal, and he’s been fantastic—so have Taylor Lewan, Will Compton, and a slew of other college football voices. As the year is coming to a close, and as it’s been an incredible year for football in general, it’s a good opportunity to look to the future. As we look at everything Josh has done, we certainly want to find a world where he’s a part of it. … Going into this fall we made a concerted effort to follow college football in a really meaningful way. It’s something [analyst Pat] McAfee has done masterfully on his show as well. We just wanted to widen the tent. We saw going into this season that audiences were going to be astronomical. Collectively we made a push to make sure all our shows were equipped to have those conversations in a substantial way.” (link)
