With college administrators still unsure of how much anyone is paying for players or whether schools are playing by the rules, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy notes that tension is now residing squarely in front of the College Sports Commission, which is just six months into its existence and already prepping for its first real enforcement tests. Florida State AD Michael Alford: “A lot of concern over deals not being reported. But eventually you have to [report deals]. Eventually, you’ve got to enter those through the system — in theory.” NCAA President Charlie Baker: ‘Look, I’ve expected this whole thing, from the beginning, to be one of these things where you have a set of parameters and then, over time, based on experience, you start to create greater levels of clarity and depth and detail about what it actually translates into.” More. Count Syracuse AD John Wildhack among those calling for serious college football reforms on the sport’s calendar, collective bargaining and consolidation of TV media rights to build a more sustainable future. Per ESPN’s David Hale, Wildhack believes the moment is now to make changes to address on-going issues from the transfer portal to in-season coaching departures, player eligibility and revenue gaps. Wildhack: “We have a tendency to look at things as a one-off, and we need to look at the sport holistically. When you're in a moment when you have that popularity and the support from the fans, you have to build on it and make it better. … There needs to be collective bargaining. The players should be getting paid, no question about that. But with collective bargaining there's rules that have been bargained for. It's a legal document that everybody has obligations they're required to uphold. That's where we need to go. … There's no 100% approval rating, but let's take what we have now and make it better. The time is right and there's so much opportunity here that's being left on the table. If we address the key issues and can begin to make progress, we make it better for everybody, and the sport will thrive. There's no question.” More. (link)

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari ponders how to stop the chaos currently roiling college sports, noting the new model of athletics “seems less focused on providing young people with educational opportunities and more concerned with running from conflict and criticism. … Coaches, athletes and fans no longer know what the rules are because they seem to change every time someone challenges the leadership at the NCAA. Everyone seems to get amateur eligibility, can come and go from schools as they please, and stay in college as many years as they’d like.” Per Calipari, rather than being transformational for families, coaches have now “become too transactional,” a situation that must be fixed in order to maximize student-athlete earning potential while underscoring the impact of education on their lives. Calipari: “If a legislative solution isn’t possible, the athletic conferences should take the lead by forming an alliance. This could require collective bargaining with athletes as a special class of nonemployees. … If the conferences are not able to lead, there’s another option: creating sport-specific entities that govern themselves and oversee rules creating the best environment for student-athletes.” More. The NCAA announces a trio of DI sport-specific updates, following votes by members from across all three divisions at the 2026 NCAA Convention, as acrobatics and tumbling and STUNT have each been elevated to championship status, while flag football has been added to the Emerging Sports for Women’s program. Both acrobatics and tumbling and STUNT’s first championships, which are set to include all three divisions, are projected to take place in spring 2027. For flag football to be considered for championship status, at least 40 schools must sponsor the sport as a varsity program, with the association anticipating as many as 60 members playing flag football this spring. Nebraska will add women’s flag football as its 25th varsity sport with play slated to begin in the spring of 2028. Timeline: “Nebraska will immediately begin the process of searching for a head coach and building a roster this spring, with plans to have a coach hired by summer and recruit a roster of approximately 15 players by the start of the fall 2026 semester.” Huskers AD Troy Dannen: “In a time of uncertainty and change in college athletics, creating new participation opportunities continues Nebraska’s rich history of elevating women’s athletics. Flag football is one of the nation’s fastest growing sports and has exploded in popularity at the youth, high school and collegiate level. There is also great synergy in our first season in 2028 aligning with the inclusion of flag football at the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.” (link)

“College sports is changing, but not all change is chaos. College football has never been more popular.” That’s FOX President of Insights & Analytics Mike Mulvihill weighing in on the seismic changes within the current college football environment, per The Washington Post’s Ben Strauss, who notes the proof of the sport’s popularity is best witnessed through the 179B minutes consumed by TV viewers during the 2025 regular season, up 33% from 2021. Strauss: “This season’s bowl games on ESPN recorded their highest audience in 10 years. … Thanks to the expanded playoff, college football accounted for eight of the 100 most-watched TV telecasts in 2025, its most ever. ESPN posted its most-viewed college football season since 2011. … There are a few explanations. … The first is the parity of the NIL era. … There was more interest and more close games, which increased viewership. … The networks have also gotten better at scheduling. The ever-expanding Big Ten and SEC have made for more nationally appealing games between schools with bigger brands, and the networks have taken advantage. … There were 387 national telecasts in the 2021 regular season, compared with 487 in 2025. That has certainly meant more overall minutes consumed, though per game viewers are also up. Nielsen also changed the way it tabulates viewers this season, counting more devices and people watching outside their homes, such as at a bar, in smaller markets, especially in Big 12 and SEC country.” More. President Robert Sloan: “Steve Moniaci has been a great Director of Athletics for HCU. He led our transition back to NCAA Division I, has been instrumental in the expansion of our programs now to 17 sports, and has led our programs to many championships and successes. He has earned over these years the trust and appreciation of our coaches, and will represent outstanding continuity for us. Stan will do an outstanding job in his new role.” (link)

The NCAA secured another legal victory yesterday when U.S. District Judge William L. Campbell Jr. denied a preliminary injunction in Patterson v. NCAA, blocking a bid by Vanderbilt LB Langston Patterson and other plaintiffs to secure a fifth year of eligibility for the 2026-27 season. Campbell, who previously granted an injunction for Vandy QB Diego Pavia, ruled that plaintiffs failed to show that the NCAA's procompetitive benefits could be achieved through "substantially less restrictive means" and cautioned against the court second-guessing "degrees of efficiency" in eligibility limits. With this ruling, the NCAA has now won 26 of 36 injunction decisions in eligibility disputes. (link); Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner offers more context: “The decision leaves open the possibility that the plaintiffs could prevail on a more fully developed record at trial, but signals that some courts remain hesitant to dismantle longstanding eligibility rules without compelling evidence they're patently stricter than necessary.” (link)

A Louisiana judge ruled against Louisiana Tech and the University of Louisiana System in a lawsuit filed by Conference USA, ordering the university to produce additional records related to its move to the Sun Belt and pay $3,500 in penalties, according to CollegeAD. The Sporting News’ Bill Bender catches up with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, who covers several topics, including his thoughts on a 16-team College Football Playoff: “Here is where the line of demarcation is for me – I just think when you have worthy teams being left out that could potentially win a national championship, then you probably don't have the right number. That has been the case the last three years. I felt it when Florida State was left out. ... I think we should go to 16. I really do, and we'll see if we can come together on that." Phillips says of the transparency of live replay reviews: "That's where the game is going, and I hope others will follow. I hope other conferences will follow. I hope the NFL will follow it at some point. It's been great for the fans to understand that nobody is tipping the scale for one school or another for any reason. They're really trying to get these calls right." More. (link)

JohnCanzano.com's namesake reports that the Pac-12 is delaying its 2026 football schedule announcement pending the January 23 College Football Playoff decision on playoff expansion. With only eight football members for 2026, the league is weighing two primary options to fill the eighth game: a traditional home-and-home series or a flex scheduling concept for the final week of the season. The flex model would designate four home teams but leave opponents TBD to create the most advantageous matchups for CFP positioning, though Canzano posits: “My bet is that the Pac-12 lands on that concept as a one-year scheduling solution in 2026. I love the idea of a flex schedule, but suspect travel uncertainty for four schools will end up being a dealbreaker. Sources confirm to Canzano that partnering with another conference for a crossover game is not on the table, and Canzano predicts the Pac-12 will add a ninth football member by 2027 to solve the issue permanently. Tennessee recorded just over $304M in revenue and $288M in expenses during FY25, finishing with a $16M surplus. The $70M year-over-year revenue surge was driven by a 52% increase in contributions (to $111M), a 51% jump in licensing revenue, and a 12% spike in ticket sales ($52.2M). More on the cash flows in Knoxville…
➤ Vols AD Danny White noted the department has already reinvested the surplus into capital projects that generate future revenue, such as the $5M Riverside Club at Food City Center, which is projected to yield $7M annually. Expenses rose to a record $288M, fueled by a 17% increase in coaching and support staff salaries, as the department eclipsed its 2025 strategic plan revenue target by nearly $100M.
➤ White also explains why that money can’t simply be invested in rosters: “You can’t get it approved. I’m not going to get into specifics with our numbers for competitive reasons, but I don’t know how another school without cheating could possibly be as aggressive as we are. I’m not saying others aren’t at the same level, but I know we are at the top. I know how important that is to give our coaches every opportunity to go compete for a championship. If I have a million dollars and I can choose investing it into a roster or getting a capital enhancement, I’m picking the roster every single time. It’s not that simple. If I find another avenue that I have confidence that through corporate sponsorships or other areas that I can invest more than we’re already doing with our rosters I will do it.”
➤ More from White, who said the following when asked how he can best support HCs in 2026: “Roster construction. Historically it was about facilities and staffing, and those things are still important — everything is important in a competitive space. But how do we resource our programs at the highest level possible where we can compete for a championship? … We are spending every dollar we’re bringing in. That [budget] surplus is allocated and earmarked for facility improvements and capital projects. … And to win the right way with integrity, it takes resources to do that. But I’m not sitting on big reserves. My job would be a lot easier if we were sitting on money in the sofa. But I want to win. And being competitive and running our athletic department as competitively as possible is exactly what we’re going to do.”

Georgia reported an operating deficit of $6.6M for FY25, a significant swing from the previous year's $47.5M surplus. The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer notes the “primary reason for that big swing in the financial report is because the UGA Athletic Association is no longer including capital project contributions because they say they are non-operating in nature. That aligns with classification in its audited financial statements.” Total operating revenue was $233.5M, down from $241.8M, while its operating expenses were $240.1M, up from $194.3M. Football recruiting spending dropped 27.2% to $2.975M—down nearly 44% from two years ago—due to fewer trips and a renegotiated private air contract, reflecting the shifting influence of NIL in player acquisition. Conversely, fundraising and marketing expenses skyrocketed from $3.9M to $42.8M, driven by NIL-related personnel and infrastructure costs permitted under state executive order. (link)

Connecticut reported a $4.9M increase in self-generated revenue for FY25, self-funding nearly 60% of its budget for the third consecutive year. The department also reports setting all-time highs with $51.2M in total financial commitments and 9,323 donors, marking five straight years of membership growth. Capital fundraising reached $11.2M, supporting projects like the Gampel Pavilion renovation and upcoming tennis facility improvements, and the university estimates the athletic department's operations generated an economic impact of over $274.6M for the state. Men’s college basketball viewership is up 39% YoY across ESPN, Fox, and CBS, with a 20% increase even when excluding Nielsen's new Big Data metrics, according to Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner. Fox leads all men’s hoops viewership growth with a massive 71% jump, capitalizing on NFL lead-ins—most notably the Michigan State-North Carolina Thanksgiving game, which drew 6.5M viewers. CBS posted its best start in nine years, averaging 1.81M viewers per game, with all 10 broadcasts surpassing the 1M mark. (link)

FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett breaks down Oregon State’s football AC pool of $3M, noting it is significantly lower than the $4.85M budget afforded to predecessor Trent Bray. HC JaMarcus Shephard himself will earn $1.6M, a 20% pay cut compared to Bray's $2M salary, while new OC Mitch Dahlen will make $400K, nearly half of what former OC Ryan Gunderson earned ($725K). Shephard framed the constraints as a culture filter: "I want guys here who want to be here... I’m not gonna bring people in this program that I feel like are gonna embarrass Oregon State."
