Cal State Fullerton AD Jim Donovan received a contract extension last August that could keep with him the Titans through the 2027 calendar year, per CollegeAD. Base pay for Donovan is $338,460. (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger on game planning for the future amid constant industry tension: “Lots of people in this league are saying, ‘What is Plan B?’ I’d put a really small group together, including current coaches. Put everything on the table. You’re basically saying, ‘If we were going to start over, what would it look like?’ The longer we wait, the deeper the hole gets.” (link)

LSU AD Verge Ausberry sat down with prominent Louisiana talk show host Newell Normand to touch on a number of issues. On Football’s talent evaluation process: “It’s no different from the Saints war room in New Orleans. It’s the same thing. So many analysts and coaches and assistant coaches. They’re monitoring the boards, monitoring teams through the year. They watch a lot of film on different players.” In terms of managing head coaches: “We’re in the entertainment business. I tell people, ‘there’s a lot of sideshow.’ There are a lot of different personalities. When you talk about a Kim Mulkey, a Jay Johnson, a Lane Kiffin, a Jay Clark, a Dennis Shaver, a Garrett Runion— all those are national championship coaches. But they have great personalities. I like those coaches. I like to have an open dialogue with them. …You can’t always say yes, yes, yes to everything they come up with, but at least you get a sense for where they want to be. My job as an executive is to help them get closest to what they need to get.” More. (link)

Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball program continues to surge under fifth-year HC Shea Ralph & super sophomore Mikayla Blakes as the Commodores are currently 18-0 (5-0) & ranked in the Top 5. ‘Dores AD Candice Storey Lee: “I want every single program that we have to be great. I came from this women's basketball program, so it is even more personal to me. But I also know that the program had demonstrated historically that it could be relevant and it could be great. And so to watch what Coach Ralph has done over the last five years, but it also lined up. We went and found the right coach, and then we invested in the facilities, and then she went and found the personnel. And we're not done yet . . . I am very excited because our alumni deserve that. They have great pride in that program, so it is important to me to invest, but it is important to me to invest in all of our programs.” (link)

After spending $45.4M on enhancements for a project completed back in 2023, additional upgrades to Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium will “be put on pause, at least for a little bit,” per Boilermakers AD Mike Bobinski. More: “You can’t let your stadium just age out on you. You got to make sure that it does the things it needs to do from a fan amenity and fan experience perspective. We’re going to continue to look at that and put a plan in place for the future. And, particularly, I think some of this will be helpful for us in that as NIL moves now into a much more corporate situation, as opposed to an individual donor perspective, it frees up donors’ attention to be able to refocus on things like facility projects and scholarship support and all those kinds of things.” (link)

In a Lebron James-type video posted on his Instagram account less than a month ago (which is linked in this article but has since been deleted from his profile), Duke QB Darian Mensah announced he’d be staying with the Blue Devils for the 2026 season, but he has now reversed course and just hours before the transfer portal window closed, he announced he’s leaving Durham. Mensah is exiting despite having signed a two-year contract when he arrived at Duke a year ago, when the Blue Devils committed to making him one of, if not the, highest-paid quarterback at the time, with annual compensation of more than $3M that could stretch to $4M with incentives. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. reports Miami (FL) is the likely landing spot for Mensah. On3’s Pete Nakos reports there’s no buyout in Mensah’s deal, though his new school will seemingly have to navigate obtaining his NIL rights from the Blue Devils. (link, link)

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has officially filed his lawsuit for additional eligibility. Here’s another key note from On3’s Andy Staples: “The judge assigned to the case is Robert Whitwell, who holds a law degree from Ole Miss. Whitwell also is a former quarterback. He was a captain for the Northwest Mississippi Community College team that won a state title in 1965. Whitwell went on to get his undergraduate degree from Delta State.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, Matt Baker and David Ubben report that "unsustainable" was the word of the week at the AFCA Convention, where coaches expressed frustration over the calendar's chaos, particularly the overlap of the transfer portal with the season and the coaching turnover impacting College Football Playoff teams. The trio note there is growing support for moving the season earlier to help college football return to being a one-semester sport, reducing conflict between academics, the portal, and the CFP. Tampering has become accepted as a "way of life," and Emerson, et al. note the issue is “met with shrugs. It’s the way of the world now. Some coaches did complain after reporting particularly brazen cases of tampering, pushing for punishments and seeing nothing happen to offenders. But most coaches don’t waste their time fighting it anymore. A much higher percentage of players have representation now, making the idea of tampering less necessary. Coaches can simply gauge a player’s interest through his agent.” More. (link)

For Extra Points’ Matt Brown, the current college sports conversation is more complicated and nuanced than whether the SCORE Act is going to get passed or not, observing that many college leaders have concerns completely unrelated to athlete compensation, employment status or antitrust such as news of the recent point-shaving indictment. Brown: “My read is that [NCAA President] Charlie Baker is probably correct when he said that ‘in Congress, I believe there is common ground around the period of eligibility, academic standards, reasonable transfer policies and other bedrock principles.’ I think it’s also clear that there simply isn’t enough of a margin in both houses to give the NCAA as broad of antitrust protection as it’s been asking for. I’ve heard that not everything about SCORE’s (so far) failure to get out of the House is completely because of the NCAA or any individual lawmaker’s deep ideological principles about antitrust law. … There’s also at least some congressional interest in giving closer attention to how college athletic departments may take on institutional investments from private equity firms or other groups. The more explicitly professionalized college athletic departments and conferences become organized…the more (at least some) lawmakers will openly question the current tax status of big time college sports.” More. Southeastern Louisiana Football HC Frank Scelfo called out Georgia President Jere Morehead and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on social media, accusing the league of hypocrisy regarding tampering enforcement. Responding to Morehead's threat that the SEC might "go our own way" if tampering isn't policed, Scelfo alleged that an SEC general manager illicitly contacted one of his players—who was not in the transfer portal—on Wednesday night, urging him to enter. Scelfo wrote: "Hey President Moorhead, why don’t you and Commissioner Sankey start by enforcing yourselves. LionUp Football had an SEC GM contact one of my players last night, who wasn’t in the portal, to tell him to get into the portal. Take care of your own yard! #Hypocrites #BrokenSystem.” (link)

The latest edition of CRO.ticker features a look at the financial realities FCS programs face in the NIL era through the lens of Montana CRO Marcus Welnel, who notes pre-NIL student-athletes came to Montana and stayed. “They had the best facilities. They loved the atmosphere. They loved the fans. … So there's no real reason to move up or leave. But now when they offer a dollar amount the University of Montana can offer versus a dollar amount that the University of Alabama or Tennessee can offer.” Also in this edition: As athletic departments continue to look for ways to build out premium infrastructure as a revenue driver, CRO.ticker takes a look at Delta’s luxury-focused seat strategy and Barclays Center’s $140M high-end club renovation. Through the first two weeks of the new year, CollegeSports.jobs is once again the only jobs board with YOY growth in job postings by Division I schools (+3.13%). The overall DI market is down nearly 10%, while the NCAA Marketplace board is down 33.33%. Of all the administrative positions (non-coaching) posted thus far in 2026, 86.36% of them have been posted on CollegeSports.jobs. Distribution via D1.ticker and other College.town publications and a more cost effective option are just two of the reasons schools are turning to CollegeSports.jobs as the go-to jobs board for athletic department openings. With college administrators still unsure of how much anyone is paying for players or whether schools are playing by the rules, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy notes that tension is now residing squarely in front of the College Sports Commission, which is just six months into its existence and already prepping for its first real enforcement tests. Florida State AD Michael Alford: “A lot of concern over deals not being reported. But eventually you have to [report deals]. Eventually, you’ve got to enter those through the system — in theory.” NCAA President Charlie Baker: ‘Look, I’ve expected this whole thing, from the beginning, to be one of these things where you have a set of parameters and then, over time, based on experience, you start to create greater levels of clarity and depth and detail about what it actually translates into.” More. Count Syracuse AD John Wildhack among those calling for serious college football reforms on the sport’s calendar, collective bargaining and consolidation of TV media rights to build a more sustainable future. Per ESPN’s David Hale, Wildhack believes the moment is now to make changes to address on-going issues from the transfer portal to in-season coaching departures, player eligibility and revenue gaps. Wildhack: “We have a tendency to look at things as a one-off, and we need to look at the sport holistically. When you're in a moment when you have that popularity and the support from the fans, you have to build on it and make it better. … There needs to be collective bargaining. The players should be getting paid, no question about that. But with collective bargaining there's rules that have been bargained for. It's a legal document that everybody has obligations they're required to uphold. That's where we need to go. … There's no 100% approval rating, but let's take what we have now and make it better. The time is right and there's so much opportunity here that's being left on the table. If we address the key issues and can begin to make progress, we make it better for everybody, and the sport will thrive. There's no question.” More. (link)

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari ponders how to stop the chaos currently roiling college sports, noting the new model of athletics “seems less focused on providing young people with educational opportunities and more concerned with running from conflict and criticism. … Coaches, athletes and fans no longer know what the rules are because they seem to change every time someone challenges the leadership at the NCAA. Everyone seems to get amateur eligibility, can come and go from schools as they please, and stay in college as many years as they’d like.” Per Calipari, rather than being transformational for families, coaches have now “become too transactional,” a situation that must be fixed in order to maximize student-athlete earning potential while underscoring the impact of education on their lives. Calipari: “If a legislative solution isn’t possible, the athletic conferences should take the lead by forming an alliance. This could require collective bargaining with athletes as a special class of nonemployees. … If the conferences are not able to lead, there’s another option: creating sport-specific entities that govern themselves and oversee rules creating the best environment for student-athletes.” More. The NCAA announces a trio of DI sport-specific updates, following votes by members from across all three divisions at the 2026 NCAA Convention, as acrobatics and tumbling and STUNT have each been elevated to championship status, while flag football has been added to the Emerging Sports for Women’s program. Both acrobatics and tumbling and STUNT’s first championships, which are set to include all three divisions, are projected to take place in spring 2027. For flag football to be considered for championship status, at least 40 schools must sponsor the sport as a varsity program, with the association anticipating as many as 60 members playing flag football this spring. Nebraska will add women’s flag football as its 25th varsity sport with play slated to begin in the spring of 2028. Timeline: “Nebraska will immediately begin the process of searching for a head coach and building a roster this spring, with plans to have a coach hired by summer and recruit a roster of approximately 15 players by the start of the fall 2026 semester.” Huskers AD Troy Dannen: “In a time of uncertainty and change in college athletics, creating new participation opportunities continues Nebraska’s rich history of elevating women’s athletics. Flag football is one of the nation’s fastest growing sports and has exploded in popularity at the youth, high school and collegiate level. There is also great synergy in our first season in 2028 aligning with the inclusion of flag football at the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.” (link)

“College sports is changing, but not all change is chaos. College football has never been more popular.” That’s FOX President of Insights & Analytics Mike Mulvihill weighing in on the seismic changes within the current college football environment, per The Washington Post’s Ben Strauss, who notes the proof of the sport’s popularity is best witnessed through the 179B minutes consumed by TV viewers during the 2025 regular season, up 33% from 2021. Strauss: “This season’s bowl games on ESPN recorded their highest audience in 10 years. … Thanks to the expanded playoff, college football accounted for eight of the 100 most-watched TV telecasts in 2025, its most ever. ESPN posted its most-viewed college football season since 2011. … There are a few explanations. … The first is the parity of the NIL era. … There was more interest and more close games, which increased viewership. … The networks have also gotten better at scheduling. The ever-expanding Big Ten and SEC have made for more nationally appealing games between schools with bigger brands, and the networks have taken advantage. … There were 387 national telecasts in the 2021 regular season, compared with 487 in 2025. That has certainly meant more overall minutes consumed, though per game viewers are also up. Nielsen also changed the way it tabulates viewers this season, counting more devices and people watching outside their homes, such as at a bar, in smaller markets, especially in Big 12 and SEC country.” More. Allstate led the way in national TV spend at $8.76M over 10 spots, followed by Dr Pepper ($6.89M - seven spots), AT&T Wireless ($6.72M - eight spots), Taco Bell ($6.59M - six spots) and Capital One credit card ($4.82M - seven spots).
