A trio of major college conference commissioners, the American’s Tim Pernetti, the ACC’s Jim Phillips and the SEC’s Greg Sankey visited separately with SiriusXM’s “Off Campus” show on Monday night to discuss issues facing college sports. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On the CFP, Pernetti remarked: ‘We only did this 12-team thing one time (prior to this season), so we don’t have a lot of data. … And viewership, depending on the round, overall is down. So the prospect of adding more just all needs to be evaluated. What is the reason to expand? … We just need to be careful about making sure we don’t leave championship-level teams out of the playoff. More at-large spots that are limited to 16 (teams) I think is a logical next step, but no one’s saying right now is the best time to do that.” Phillips disagrees: “Sixteen (teams) to me, we have to get to that number. We have to look at how we do those … four teams and how those two games enter. Do you play play-in games, like basketball goes to Dayton? But do you play those on campus? Do you do a 13 versus 16 and 14-15? You can work that out. … We have until this Friday to expand from 12 to 16. I’m still cautiously optimistic we can get there.”
➤ On the transfer portal, Phillips notes: “Tampering, illegal contact across college football -- we have to get our hands around that. We just do. You’re either going to have some rules or you’re not going to have rules. What’s happened is that the investment has never been greater, so the stakes have never been greater. … That’s on myself, that’s on the other commissioners, on the NCAA, the CSC. We’ve got a lot of work to do there.” Pernetti adds: “It didn’t work with the two windows. This year there's one, less kids are in the portal -- you can point to some positives. But the early signing period is killing college football and it’s really impacting commitment. If that went away and the portal moved into the spring where every kid could go through spring practice, see where they sit on the depth chart and then decide, I think it’s logical.”
➤ On rumors he doesn’t get along with other league commissioners, Sankey commented: “I have a great deal of respect for my colleagues, all of them. (Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti) and I in particular, we spoke twice last week and we’ll speak again this week. We’re working on collaborative problem solving. … Do we always agree? No. Does that mean we just go our own ways and we never speak or try to solve problems? Absolutely not. I think there’s a lot of respect in the room but there are different views.”

“Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Unbelievable.” That was Indiana AD Scott Dolson’s reaction after the Hoosiers’ CFP title game win over Miami (FL) on Monday, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes Dolson “saw football as the avenue into college sports’ next iteration amid a landscape ridden with antitrust issues, threats of realignment and perpetual self-preservation. That, at least in part, is why a perennial doormat spent $15.5M to buy out former head coach Tom Allen in order to hire [HC Curt] Cignetti fresh off leading James Madison to an 11-win season.” It’s also why the school invested more than $90M in stadium upgrades and expanded its football budget for FY25 to $61.6M. Dolson: “We need to make certain that we’re competitive in football -- we have to be. We owed it to the Big Ten Conference. We can’t be at the trough of the Big Ten and enjoying the fruits of all the great work that so many people are doing to make the conference so viable and not be a productive member.” IU President Pamela Whitten: “Five years ago, we wanted to get to a national championship. We did a lot of work to get prepared and get a program that was ready for the best coach in America. It’s the vision we always had.” More. (link)

Duke has sued football student-athlete Darian Mensah, claiming he breached a multi-year NIL contract that concludes on Dec. 31, 2026. According to Sportico’s Michael McCann, the school is now seeking an injunction and restraining order in Durham County (NC) in an attempt to block the quarterback from departing via the transfer portal and joining another program. McCann: “As described by Duke, the contract grants the school ‘exclusive rights’ to Mensah’s NIL ‘with respect to higher education and football,” and says “Mensah transferring would constitute him acting ‘as if his obligations’ to the university ‘do not exist.’ The complaint references that the contract contains a mandatory arbitration provision, which Duke says it has followed, but the school insists that an emergency restraining order is needed to prevent Mensah from ‘ignoring his contractual obligations’ to Duke and ‘transferring to another school to compete in football and license his NIL rights to that school.’” Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds this tidbit: “Darian Mensah’s counsel, Darren Heitner, says a judge today denied Duke’s request that Mensah be enjoined from entering the transfer portal. The judge, a Duke basketball season ticket holder, recused himself from future proceedings.” More. (link, link)

Overall attendance for this year’s 47 FBS postseason games (since Dec. 13) was down 9% YoY from the 2024-25 bowl season, per SBJ’s David Broughton and Emma Grace Jimenez, who note more than 1.7M fans ventured through the turnstiles for an average attendance of 30,600, down 16% from last season’s 46 games, but up over the 2022 and 2023 bowl seasons. This year’s four first-round CFP match-ups added 311,047 to the attendance total, with Miami (FL)-Texas A&M leading the way with a crowd of 104,122. By comparison, last season’s first round contests were boosted by a trio of home crowds above 100K at Ohio State, Texas and Penn State. More. (link)

Wisconsin’s athletic department managed $197.9M in total operating revenue and $193.6M in total operating expenses for FY25, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who observes those figures are up YoY from FY24 totals of $190.6M and $186.7M, respectively. Steppe’s three key takeaways…
➤ Wisconsin's revenue is increasingly tied to media rights with the Badgers reporting $62.9M in media rights income from the second year of the Big Ten’s massive media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC. “That represented 31.8% of UW’s total reported revenue for 2024-25.”
➤ Team travel costs were lower in the first season of the expanded Big Ten. “After spending $13.7M in team travel in the 2023-24 fiscal year, Wisconsin reported only $11.2M in spending on team travel in 2024-25 – an 18.1% decrease … despite the Big Ten’s addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington.”
➤ Ticket revenue was booming for volleyball and stagnant for the basketball programs. “Wisconsin volleyball ticket sales jumped from $1.6M in the 2023-24 fiscal year to $2.3M in the 2024-25 fiscal year. It is a 36.8% one-year increase and a remarkable 216.3% three-year increase since Wisconsin’s national-championship-winning season. Football ticket sales revenue increased from $24.1M in 2023-24 to $25.8M in 2024-25 despite subpar results in [HC] Luke Fickell’s second season. … Men’s and women’s basketball each experienced [modest] decreases in ticket sales in 2024-25.” More. Can a smaller school such as Richmond keep up in the Atlantic 10? That’s the query posed by Richmond.com’s John O’Connor, who notes the “Spiders' revenue streams would seem to be limited in comparison to much larger schools with much larger alumni bases.” The goal, according to Richmond Men’s Basketball HC Chris Mooney, is determining how the program can take advantage of the school’s many strengths. Mooney: “An advantage that we have is that we’re such a great school. That comes with a little bit more of a demanding admissions process. We’ve always embraced that. We thought that, hey, the guys that can get into Richmond, they’re going to want to be here. It’s an incredible place. It will be an incredible experience. Those things have shifted a little bit, even from the very best of kids, or the best of students, or the best of families. Because the money is so great. … You have to have an understanding of what’s going on out there. More. (link)

Reigning NCAA Men’s Golf individual champion and Ole Miss student-athlete Michael La Sasso is officially joining LIV Golf on a multi-year agreement, per Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine. Massachusetts Judge Christopher Barry-Smith has issued a “first-in-the-nation order,” allowing the Commonwealth to prohibit prediction market, Kalshi, from offering sports-related contracts in the state, per Bookies.com’s Bill Speros, who notes the ruling “comes in the wake of a hearing in December, and Kalshi's unsuccessful effort to remand the case to a federal court.” Speros: "The Commonwealth has until Wednesday to submit its proposed preliminary injunction. The next hearing in the case would take place on Friday, after which the judge will enter the injunction.” More. (link)

Congratulations to Indiana on winning the 2025 College Football Playoff national championship. (link)

Hoosiers HC Curt Cignetti: “Give a lot of credit to Miami. It was a real gut check. We found a way. It's a credit to our guys' resiliency to find a way to get that done. It's a great thing, Indiana winning the National Championship two years into our tenure. You do it with people and a plan. Can't say enough about our senior leadership and the people we have in the locker room and the people we have on our staff and our strength and conditioning staff, support staff and the commitment we receive from President Whitten and [AD] Scott Dolson. I would like to say our NIL is nowhere near what people think it is, so you can throw that out (laughter), and this team really overcame a lot on the road in a lot of tight games and found a way to get it done, and we're 16-0, and I guess we're 27-2 since Indiana. But we're 16-0, national champions at Indiana University, which I know a lot of people thought was never possible. It probably is one of the greatest sports stories of all time. But it's all because of these guys and the staff.” (link)

SBJ's Austin Karp reports that despite the College Football Playoff Management Committee delaying an expansion decision, the 16-team model remains the preferred path for most parties outside the Big Ten, with little appetite for a 24-team field. ESPN, which holds first right of refusal on any expansion inventory, faces a complex financial calculus as it prepares for upcoming rights renewals with the NFL, NHL, MLB, and potentially the WNBA, likely necessitating continued sublicensing to manage costs without devaluing regular-season inventory. Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli says the “bowl system and the individual bowl game organizers are in a little bit of a holding pattern until the commissioners make an announcement on the future format of the CFP and specifically how many teams will be included. There have been ongoing conversations for a year or so between all the bowls and their current conference partners about their partnerships moving forward, but nobody can really make a decision until we know what the landscape looks like." Carparelli adds: “I don’t sense that any of our bowl directors are overly anxious. … It’s the conditions under which we’ve had to operate for a while now. So, we’re very respectful of the process that the commissioners are going through and when they’re ready to make a decision, I know they’ll also be ready to talk about the future of all their secondary bowl agreements." (link)

Karp goes on to report that Florida Citrus Sports, operator of the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and Pop-Tarts Bowl, is actively positioning Orlando to host a future College Football Playoff national championship game. While the organization's two bowls were the most-watched non-CFP games of the season—outdrawing half of the playoff's first round—CMO Matt Repchak emphasized their desire to secure a permanent role in the evolving postseason structure. "We’ve always wanted to keep Orlando in the mix for a potential national championship game.” He adds of the bowls’ position: “Kind of being that spot right outside of the playoffs. The Pop-Tarts Bowl for the past couple of years has been the first matchup of ranked teams across the postseason. We’re like 10 days, 14 days into Bowl Season. And then the Citrus Bowl has been New Year’s-ish. So New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day now — it’s a big kind of milestone lead-in for those games. We like that position. Either one would work for us. We just want to have a spot in the postseason as it moves forward.” (link)

Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris joined JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Founder/Executive Chairman Michael Schreiber on the Big Business on Campus podcast to discuss structural strength in a volatile era, the Ivy’s ‘undertapped’ revenue potential, converting engagement data into reach, durable rights economics and more. On the “untapped” revenue potential topic: “I don't want to call us undervalued because I think we're highly valued, but I think untapped is the right framing. … We have a sponsorship agency in JMI Sports and they've been a terrific partner for leaguewide properties. … Our schools all have their own MMR agencies as well, so we do have sponsor support. I don't want to undervalue that either. I think it should be more, candidly. I think the value of our tournaments across all our sports, and the quality of play, first of all, but also those who are watching, are of a level that sponsors should be paying to attract and promote their business to. With that said though, sometimes what sponsors want are assets we're not able to provide them. And that goes into the fact that we're not focused on revenue generation, right? So we're not providing lists of alumni contact information to sponsors. That's not something we have access to nor would we provide for example.” More from Harris. (link)

Grambling AD Dr. Trayvean Scott visited with HBCU Sports to touch on a number of topics including NIL and revenue sharing: “My personal goal is to ensure that we can hit a certain number of rev sharing, but also to get to a space where we have coaches in non-revenue sports, where we can go out and beat the bushes and raise funds. … And that's what I told our coaches, ‘Hey, if you got a partner, a parent or someone in volleyball or soccer or tennis and bowling and they want to write us a $100K check, we'll pay it out.’ We've already advanced structurally where we're able to take that on, but we've advanced just enough. We haven’t advanced far enough to where if something changes, we can't pivot and move in another direction. [I’m] really excited about it. We'll continue to move it forward. We've got some holes to fill. As we turn the page to 2026, this portal opens … it's a free-for-all, guys. … We've got our work cut out for us, but we're excited about it.” More from Scott. (link)

The Big Ten Network is off to its best start on record for the fiscal year (July-December), with viewership up 13% YoY, according to SBJ’s Austin Karp. BTN President Francois McGillicuddy credits league expansion and Indiana's meteoric football rise for the boost, noting that even though BTN aired only two IU football games, the program's storyline helped drive a 55% surge in social media consumption: “We did 500M minutes in the first half [of the season]. And I don’t know exactly how many of those video views came from coach Cignetti. We’re in the storytelling business, and it’s been an unbelievable story, and he’s a great central character for that story.” Additionally, IU basketball viewership is up 36% despite the team being unranked. ESPN has partnered with Words + Pictures to produce Saban, a six-part docuseries chronicling the life, legacy, and impact of former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban, who says: “With my coaching days behind me, Ms. Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story. The team at Words + Pictures has encouraged me to really look back not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way – and not just reflect on what happened but consider the process which made it happen. I interacted with a lot of players and coaches along the way and I’m happy to see that so many of them have contributed to this docuseries. There’s a lot to tell, and I’m excited to share it all.” (link); Have a look at the teaser. (link)

ESPN has leaned on private aviation partner FlyHouse to navigate the complex travel logistics of the College Football Playoff national championship, flying 40 staffers and talent from various markets—including a snowy departure from Boston after the AFC Divisional Round—to Miami within 24 hours. SBJ’s Austin Karp notes that FlyHouse, in the first year of a deal focused on College GameDay and NFL Live, also transported talent cross-country for back-to-back semifinal games in Phoenix and Atlanta, managing charters with around 20 passengers each to ensure production continuity.
