CollegeAD shares the particulars of UAlbany AD Mark Benson’s extension, which runs through September 1, 2029. Benson’s base salary will increase to $343,377, and the agreement includes no buyout if Benson leaves voluntarily, while termination without cause before Sept. 1, 2028, would trigger a payout equal to one year of base salary. Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua joined the university’s Wake Up the Echoes podcast and among other comments criticized the current portal culture, noting that student-athletes transferring multiple times risk turning the educational component into a "farce," stating: "If you're going to four schools in four years… you're going to wake up and be 24, 25 years old without a college degree, without a spot in the NFL… and then what?" Bevacqua also argued that the House settlement cap is "probably too low,” adding: “I think it needs to be adjusted. ... I think a lot of the tenets of the House settlement – and we're huge proponents of the House settlement – but even roughly a year since it's been approved, I think we're realizing a lot of components of it just don't work because they're not realistic." Baylor AD Doug McNamee covers an array of topics with SicEm365’s Colt Barber, here’s what you need to know…
➤ On shifts in facility strategy: "I don’t think you’ll see departments invest in facilities like they used to. In the old world, you had the best facility for a day, then someone built something better. Student-athletes were looking at 'amusement parks in locker rooms' while saying, 'Why not compensate us?' And that’s what drove a lot of this. Now, with reallocation of funds toward student-athlete benefits, facility upgrades moving forward will be focused largely on what’s in the best interest of the fan, because the fan experience drives funding and donations that drive the cycle."
➤ McNamee says of future conference realignment: "I’ve had good conversations with [Big 12] Commissioner [Brett] Yormark. ... I told him: ‘When you have a crazy, disruptive idea, I hope we’re the first people you call. We want to be thought partners — to explore what gives us an edge and keeps us on the cutting edge.’ But he’s also been frank: Baylor needs to be a great version of itself to give the Big 12 the best chance in the next negotiations."
➤ On the fluidity of the regulatory environment: "The best comparison to what we’re experiencing right now in college athletics is overseas manufacturing and the world of tariffs — things change fast. ... You’ve even seen it over this portal period. There was guidance from CSC coming out during the portal. ... It’s like telling my eight-year-old: 'Hey, we’re going to start calling traveling in the second half.' It’s a difficult position." (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham joined the Sports Business Conversations podcast to discuss several items, including the department's transition to an in-house multimedia rights model, reporting a 2.5x financial return over expectations in its first full year. Cunningham noted the decision was driven by a desire for "separation" from competitors in a bundled national sales environment, believing Cincinnati's position in a pro sports market with a robust Fortune 500 base allowed them to "control our own destiny.” More from Cunningham…
➤ On the potential role of private equity: "I guess that's my one hesitancy, not one, but certainly a hesitancy is just, do we really know where college athletics is going to be in three to five years? And then once you do, then you can structure something around it. ... You don't want to lock yourself into something that doesn't make sense in a year or two years when this whole thing changes again."
➤ On the transfer portal's impact on fan connection: "The transfer piece has to be something that we address because that's what I hear more from fans about the fact that they don't recognize the team year to year than I do about the money, if that makes any sense. ... It's not good for young people to transfer four times. It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense with the model of being a college student and getting a degree from an institution. It doesn't make sense from the standpoint of having an alumni base and a university to always go back to and utilize down the stretch."
➤ In terms of accepting change: "Just radically accept the situation as it is at the moment that it is. It's wasted energy to try to just think about the good old days or how we got to where we got. We are where we are. ... So radically accept the moment that you're in, pivot, be willing to change your path and change it quickly and try something new." (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel shares “key pieces from Duke's lawsuit against Darian Mensah: It requests a TRO from him entering the portal and a preliminary injunction preventing him from entering the portal, enrolling at another school and playing football at another school and licensing his NIL to another school.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner responds: “The request for a TRO from him entering the portal was denied. The rest will get decided at a later date. To be clear, there is an injunction hearing in front of a new judge, who has no known ties to Duke, scheduled for February 2. We will seek to move that to an earlier date. In the meantime, the prior judge indicated from the bench that he will deny Duke's request that Darian Mensah be enjoined from entering into the transfer portal. But Mensah is not, for the time being, allowed to enroll at another school or play football at another school before the decision by the next judge.” (link)

Former Alabama men’s basketball student-athlete Charles Bediako is suing the NCAA in Tuscaloosa Circuit Court to regain eligibility for the remainder of the season, arguing that the NCAA’s recent clearance of Baylor's James Nnaji exposes "arbitrary and inconsistent enforcement." Bediako, who went undrafted in 2023 but signed a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs and played in the G League, has already re-enrolled at Alabama. The lawsuit challenges the NCAA's stance that signing a professional contract permanently forfeits collegiate eligibility. (link)
|
Bediako is being represented by Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who says: “He should be treated similarly to other athletes who have been deemed eligible and the NCAA should be held to a standard where it cannot apply its rules arbitrarily.” (link)
|
The NCAA in a statement indicates it is “aware of media reports about a lawsuit filed against the NCAA by Charles Bediako. Mr. Bediako signed three NBA contracts after competing in college for two seasons. The NCAA has not and will not grant eligibility to any prospective or returning student-athletes who have signed an NBA contract. Eligibility rules ensure high school students get a shot at earning scholarships, and we will continue to consistently apply and defend these rules." (link)

LSU AD Verge Ausberry says the Tigers have received 31K new season ticket requests, more than doubling the entire request period from last year. WAFB’s Jacques Doucet reports season ticket renewals are on track for best renewal rate since 2019. (link)

Colorado reported $24M in football ticket revenue for FY25, a 23% decline from the previous year’s record of $31.2M despite an improved 9-4 record and bowl appearance. Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that a CU spokesperson attributed the drop to fluctuations in seat contribution pricing and lower commissions from its third-party ticketing partner. While overall athletics revenue rose to $161.7M (up from $146.6M), expenses also jumped significantly from $138.3M to $161.5M, driven partly by football operating costs rising from $38.5M to $42.8M and coaching salaries increasing from $12.5M to $14.4M. Total football operating revenues increased from $65.7M to $69.3M. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the “Big 12 title game will move to a Friday night in 2026, as it will be held on Dec 4 at 8 EST. It was recently in a Saturday noon time slot. The Big 12 football schedule release, which is Wednesday, is highlighted by Arizona State playing at Texas Tech in Week 7. One quirk in the Big 12 schedule this year is there will be no regular season BYU/Tech match-up this year because of schedule rotation. The schedule release is at 11 am EST on Wednesday on ESPNU.” (link)

Colorado College has received a $1.8M estate gift from Pat Lyon, the wife of the late alumnus George Lyon, a former trustee and 2002 inductee into the CC Athletics Hall of Fame. According to CC, the gift will “immediately enhance the student-athlete experience by supporting: expanded access and opportunity for all student-athletes competing in athletic programs at CC; a broad-based, competitive foundation for CC's athletic programs as roster and scholarship models evolve at the Division I level; and holistic student support, including academic success, career preparedness, wellness, and leadership development.” Tigers AD Lesley Irvine on sharing revenue: “When you think about the commitment to our student-athletes here at CC, it’s not only the (revenue) share piece. That’s one small piece of it. It’s also the scholarship dollars. It’s the Alston funds that we continue to do for academic achievement. … What I would say is we don’t want to lose ourselves in this. We’re not a transfer portal squad, we need guys who are excellent hockey players.” (link, link)

Sports investment platform Vestible has pivoted from athlete earnings to crowdfunding for teams, partnering with Austrian soccer club Kapfenberger SV 1919 to allow fans to invest in a potential future sale. Vestible co-founder & CEO Parker Graham tells SBJ’s Chris Smith the company aims to fill the capital gaps facing collegiate athletic departments—ranging from $20M to $75M—"at a fraction of the cost" of private equity. Utilizing the SEC’s Regulation A exemption, the platform will offer shares to non-accredited investors, entitling them to a percentage of future revenue or equity sales, though without actual ownership rights. Smith notes Vestible’s app “currently teases several collegiate offerings as ‘coming soon’: a Power 4 program nicknamed ‘Southern Roots’ with the ticker $CRAW, a Group of 5 athletic department called Desert Bloodline ($TUMB) and an FCS program Midwest Made ($PEND).” (link)

Netflix reported its latest earnings, as the streamer had income of $2.42B, or 56 cents per share, up from $1.87B, or 43 cents per share, during the same period a year earlier. Netflix also said Tuesday it plans to increase spending on films and TV shows by 10% in 2026 while forging ahead with plans to buy the studio and streaming business of Warner Bros. Netflix spent about $18B on programming last year, with subscribers growing almost 8% to top 325M. (link, link) Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized during the call that competition is fierce as the company seeks to take over Warner Bros. Discovery: “The TV landscape, in fact, has never been more competitive than it is today. There’s never been more competition for creators, for consumer attention, for advertising and subscription dollars. The competitive lines around TV consumption are already blurring as a number of services put their content on both the linear channels and the streaming services at the same time, and more platforms are making their way into the TV in your living room.” (link)

A trio of major college conference commissioners, the American’s Tim Pernetti, the ACC’s Jim Phillips and the SEC’s Greg Sankey visited separately with SiriusXM’s “Off Campus” show on Monday night to discuss issues facing college sports. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On the CFP, Pernetti remarked: ‘We only did this 12-team thing one time (prior to this season), so we don’t have a lot of data. … And viewership, depending on the round, overall is down. So the prospect of adding more just all needs to be evaluated. What is the reason to expand? … We just need to be careful about making sure we don’t leave championship-level teams out of the playoff. More at-large spots that are limited to 16 (teams) I think is a logical next step, but no one’s saying right now is the best time to do that.” Phillips disagrees: “Sixteen (teams) to me, we have to get to that number. We have to look at how we do those … four teams and how those two games enter. Do you play play-in games, like basketball goes to Dayton? But do you play those on campus? Do you do a 13 versus 16 and 14-15? You can work that out. … We have until this Friday to expand from 12 to 16. I’m still cautiously optimistic we can get there.”
➤ On the transfer portal, Phillips notes: “Tampering, illegal contact across college football -- we have to get our hands around that. We just do. You’re either going to have some rules or you’re not going to have rules. What’s happened is that the investment has never been greater, so the stakes have never been greater. … That’s on myself, that’s on the other commissioners, on the NCAA, the CSC. We’ve got a lot of work to do there.” Pernetti adds: “It didn’t work with the two windows. This year there's one, less kids are in the portal -- you can point to some positives. But the early signing period is killing college football and it’s really impacting commitment. If that went away and the portal moved into the spring where every kid could go through spring practice, see where they sit on the depth chart and then decide, I think it’s logical.”
➤ On rumors he doesn’t get along with other league commissioners, Sankey commented: “I have a great deal of respect for my colleagues, all of them. (Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti) and I in particular, we spoke twice last week and we’ll speak again this week. We’re working on collaborative problem solving. … Do we always agree? No. Does that mean we just go our own ways and we never speak or try to solve problems? Absolutely not. I think there’s a lot of respect in the room but there are different views.”

“Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Unbelievable.” That was Indiana AD Scott Dolson’s reaction after the Hoosiers’ CFP title game win over Miami (FL) on Monday, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes Dolson “saw football as the avenue into college sports’ next iteration amid a landscape ridden with antitrust issues, threats of realignment and perpetual self-preservation. That, at least in part, is why a perennial doormat spent $15.5M to buy out former head coach Tom Allen in order to hire [HC Curt] Cignetti fresh off leading James Madison to an 11-win season.” It’s also why the school invested more than $90M in stadium upgrades and expanded its football budget for FY25 to $61.6M. Dolson: “We need to make certain that we’re competitive in football -- we have to be. We owed it to the Big Ten Conference. We can’t be at the trough of the Big Ten and enjoying the fruits of all the great work that so many people are doing to make the conference so viable and not be a productive member.” IU President Pamela Whitten: “Five years ago, we wanted to get to a national championship. We did a lot of work to get prepared and get a program that was ready for the best coach in America. It’s the vision we always had.” More. (link)

Meanwhile, Indiana’s official website crashed last night following the Hoosiers’ CFP national title tilt victory, per SI’s Bryan Fischer. (link)

Duke has sued football student-athlete Darian Mensah, claiming he breached a multi-year NIL contract that concludes on Dec. 31, 2026. According to Sportico’s Michael McCann, the school is now seeking an injunction and restraining order in Durham County (NC) in an attempt to block the quarterback from departing via the transfer portal and joining another program. McCann: “As described by Duke, the contract grants the school ‘exclusive rights’ to Mensah’s NIL ‘with respect to higher education and football,” and says “Mensah transferring would constitute him acting ‘as if his obligations’ to the university ‘do not exist.’ The complaint references that the contract contains a mandatory arbitration provision, which Duke says it has followed, but the school insists that an emergency restraining order is needed to prevent Mensah from ‘ignoring his contractual obligations’ to Duke and ‘transferring to another school to compete in football and license his NIL rights to that school.’” Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds this tidbit: “Darian Mensah’s counsel, Darren Heitner, says a judge today denied Duke’s request that Mensah be enjoined from entering the transfer portal. The judge, a Duke basketball season ticket holder, recused himself from future proceedings.” More. (link, link)

Overall attendance for this year’s 47 FBS postseason games (since Dec. 13) was down 9% YoY from the 2024-25 bowl season, per SBJ’s David Broughton and Emma Grace Jimenez, who note more than 1.7M fans ventured through the turnstiles for an average attendance of 30,600, down 16% from last season’s 46 games, but up over the 2022 and 2023 bowl seasons. This year’s four first-round CFP match-ups added 311,047 to the attendance total, with Miami (FL)-Texas A&M leading the way with a crowd of 104,122. By comparison, last season’s first round contests were boosted by a trio of home crowds above 100K at Ohio State, Texas and Penn State. More. (link)

Wisconsin’s athletic department managed $197.9M in total operating revenue and $193.6M in total operating expenses for FY25, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who observes those figures are up YoY from FY24 totals of $190.6M and $186.7M, respectively. Steppe’s three key takeaways…
➤ Wisconsin's revenue is increasingly tied to media rights with the Badgers reporting $62.9M in media rights income from the second year of the Big Ten’s massive media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC. “That represented 31.8% of UW’s total reported revenue for 2024-25.”
➤ Team travel costs were lower in the first season of the expanded Big Ten. “After spending $13.7M in team travel in the 2023-24 fiscal year, Wisconsin reported only $11.2M in spending on team travel in 2024-25 – an 18.1% decrease … despite the Big Ten’s addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington.”
➤ Ticket revenue was booming for volleyball and stagnant for the basketball programs. “Wisconsin volleyball ticket sales jumped from $1.6M in the 2023-24 fiscal year to $2.3M in the 2024-25 fiscal year. It is a 36.8% one-year increase and a remarkable 216.3% three-year increase since Wisconsin’s national-championship-winning season. Football ticket sales revenue increased from $24.1M in 2023-24 to $25.8M in 2024-25 despite subpar results in [HC] Luke Fickell’s second season. … Men’s and women’s basketball each experienced [modest] decreases in ticket sales in 2024-25.” More. Can a smaller school such as Richmond keep up in the Atlantic 10? That’s the query posed by Richmond.com’s John O’Connor, who notes the “Spiders' revenue streams would seem to be limited in comparison to much larger schools with much larger alumni bases.” The goal, according to Richmond Men’s Basketball HC Chris Mooney, is determining how the program can take advantage of the school’s many strengths. Mooney: “An advantage that we have is that we’re such a great school. That comes with a little bit more of a demanding admissions process. We’ve always embraced that. We thought that, hey, the guys that can get into Richmond, they’re going to want to be here. It’s an incredible place. It will be an incredible experience. Those things have shifted a little bit, even from the very best of kids, or the best of students, or the best of families. Because the money is so great. … You have to have an understanding of what’s going on out there. More. (link)

Reigning NCAA Men’s Golf individual champion and Ole Miss student-athlete Michael La Sasso is officially joining LIV Golf on a multi-year agreement, per Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine. La Sasso’s expected to join Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC and make his debut at next month’s LIV opener in Saudi Arabia, meaning he will “forfeit his remaining college eligibility and leave the Rebels before his final semester.” Romine: “La Sasso is the second recent NCAA individual champion to sign with the Saudi-backed league, following 2021 NCAA winner Turk Pettit, who competed in all eight events of LIV’s inaugural season in 2022.” More.
