➤ On NIL, McCleary says of the resolution that passed at last week’s convention: “How do we carve out space so that we can give [administrators] the tools to make sure that they’re educating their student-athletes who are asking about NIL?”

➤ Asked about potential concerns of NIL becoming more prevalent in DIII and creating a greater gap between institutions based on resources: “I don't have that concern. … All the good [of NIL], we need to bottle somehow. So I'm not sure. Higher resource institutions – I think what they're going to be able to do is go find third parties to help them with NIL, but I think some of our smaller institutions and local communities are going to get some pressures to go, ‘Oh, but we want you to get X player and can we give you some money?’ So all those different issues, this is what this resolution is about, to say, ‘We've got to look at them, and we have to listen to our membership of how do you need us to help you?’ Because the space is here and there's a lot of good, but we also know that NIL can be used in a manner that is less good.”

➤ One-third of DIII institutions have gone through or signed up for Mental Health First Aid training, which the division will cover for up to 30 people through August 2027. The impact: “Everything we have heard that's been reported back to us has been, it's a game changer. We are not putting out mental health counselors, but what the data shows is that one in three high school student-athletes are going to come to college having had a mental health crisis or concern or issue. It is preparing our coaches and our administrators, and especially our athletic trainers if they get trained. How do I recognize it? How do I acknowledge it? And how do I help that individual get to the right place so that it can be addressed to help them? 210,000 student-athletes in Division III; if we can get 60-70% of our campuses to go through the training, we're on small campuses, and we're going to impact, I think, not only, let's say, 160,000 Division III student-athletes, but all of their friends, and that's a game-changer.” (link)

“Good coaches celebrate outcomes. Great coaches celebrate people and processes. That’s what we’re doing here.” That’s how Oberlin AD Natalie Winkelfoos describes the process of building the Yeomen football program and developing student-athletes. HC John Pont tells Extra Points’ Matt Brown: “Every team that wins a championship is a close-knit group. It’s a family-like bond. So we’re very purposeful in trying to build that. When you build it the right way, when you do things the right way, when you surround yourself with the right people, the scoreboard will end up taking care of itself. It just takes time. … The scores might not necessarily reflect who we are as a team, but I promise you, when you turn on the film, and you're around our sideline, you're around our team, you'll feel a tremendous difference. And so the progress, to me, you know, is evident in who we're recruiting, how we're recruiting, and the growth and experience of our guys.” Winkelfoos adds: “I think that the competitive advantage that they have is that they're going to have more fun than the other team. Like, that's annoying when you're playing, and you know that the other team is just so joyful. It's like, why are they so happy? But that is their mental mindset, and it's so cool to see that they just refuse to be defined by the external noise. They care so deeply, and there's a refusal to be miserable and succumb to what outsiders want us to believe about ourselves. It's impressive.” (link)

The NAIA COP Executive Committee has unanimously withdrawn the 2026 legislative proposal for a fifth season of competition, which comes after NCAA DII referred its own legislative proposal back to the governance structure last week. President/CEO Jim Carr, in an email to members: “The NAIA is committed to a thoughtful decision-making process, and this pause allows us to evaluate five seasons of competition more comprehensively, ensuring that we consider the implications for all parties involved. After more assessment, the COP will determine whether to bring forth a proposal in the future.” (link)

The DI Board of Directors has adopted a proposal amending the required voting threshold for rules changes involving membership requirements for Division I schools. Effective immediately, any alterations to rules governing DI membership “must be adopted by a majority that is greater than the number of votes that could be cast by representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference, including student-athlete representatives. … The new voting requirements are a direct response to feedback and concerns from member schools since August.” They guarantee that at the conclusion of a five-year period specifying no changes be made to DI membership requirements, “membership requirements still cannot be changed without the support of at least one nonautonomy conference or voting representative.” (link)

The DI Cabinet has approved a rule change allowing programs to place additional commercial logos on uniforms, equipment, and apparel for regular season and preseason competition, effective Aug. 1. Teams will be permitted up to two patches on uniforms (max four square inches each) and one on equipment, with an extra logo allowed for conference championships. Cabinet Chair/Illinois AD Josh Whitman framed the move as a commitment to "drive additional revenues and fully fund" increased athlete benefits in the modern era. The Cabinet also supported exploring policies to allow commercial patches during NCAA Championships in the future. (link)

Lynchburg has been placed on probation for one year and is subject to a $1,500 fine after improperly awarding over $155K in financial aid in 2022-23. Per the Committee on Infractions: “At the time of the violations, Lynchburg held scholarship competitions called Scholarship Days in which all admitted students had the opportunity to earn additional financial aid based on criteria unrelated to athletics participation. Lynchburg traditionally held Scholarship Days during both the fall and spring semesters. Based on the timing of their acceptance to the school, student-athletes typically attended these events during the fall semester, while non-student-athletes attended during the spring. Lynchburg canceled the program after the fall 2021 semester without offering a comparable financial aid opportunity in the spring. Due to the timing of the cancellation, 78% of the incoming 2022-23 students who received aid via the program were student-athletes.” (link)
