Rhode Island has retained CSA Search & Consulting to assist with its AD selection process, according to CollegeAD. (link); For those interested in leading the Rams, there’s a D1.dossier ready to help your process. Dozens of sitting ADs have relied on a D1.dossier to save them time (and therefore money) in three main ways: 1) As they decide if an open AD job is the right one to go after; 2) When they’re in full interview prep mode; and, 3) As a guide to assist in defining their first 90 days once they’ve landed the job. College Football Playoff Executive Director Rich Clark signaled the start of a year-long countdown to the 2027 national championship in Las Vegas, emphasizing to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers that the event aims to be "better than perfect" following a spectacular week in Miami. Clark highlighted Las Vegas' unique advantage as a compact, walkable destination and noted that the city's built-in tourist base naturally elevates the event's profile. More from Clark on the playoff format decision: "We’re looking at our format and to know whether that format will change or not, we should know here in a few days. If it does change, there’ll be some work there that we’re going to have to do. If it doesn’t change and we stay with the 12-team playoff, that’s spectacular because we love the format. But if we do get another better format (16-team), we’ll have to make some adjustments there." (link)

Notre Dame Men’s Basketball GM Pat Garrity talks about the complexity of building a roster in the NIL era: “When you're talking to either a parent or an intermediary area that's working with the student there, they got one offer what they think at one school that does it one way, and we do it another way, and a third school is going to do it a third way. It's just a giant coordination problem in how you actually get to a deal. So that presents one set of problems just to get to a simple one-year deal. When you start trying to think about how do we protect ourselves, add some upside, but protect ourselves, adding mechanisms to a contract, it just gets really hard to get anything creative done.” Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua adds: “If I was running an NBA team and Pat was a power forward and I was running the New York Knicks, he couldn't walk into my office on a Tuesday and say, hey, you know what, I decided I'm going to go play for the 76ers. Well, Pat, no, you have a contract. You can't do that. That team can't take you. College sports, there aren't those rules. It's not really a two-way street. We have to do what's best for our student-athletes. That's why we're here, but we also have to protect the university.” (link)

Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jacob Polacheck catches up with Westchester Knicks G League guard Dink Pate, who is pursuing NCAA eligibility for the 2026-27 season and says he’s been told he has a "95% chance" of being made eligible. The 19-year-old, who became the youngest U.S. pro basketball player in history when he joined G League Ignite in 2023, is leveraging his relationship with former Ignite coach and current Kentucky Men’s Basketball AC Jason Hart, though he admits Kentucky hasn't formally offered: "We haven’t taken a deep dive into anything… but we’re talking." Pate’s agent, Sam Permut of Roc Nation, says he’s fielding interest from 50+ schools. Pate also points out: “I’m 19. I’m not 25. Everybody else who’s doing it is way older than me. I’m the exact age as these other dudes that are in the system right now.” (link)

ESPN reports that 30.1M viewers watched the College Football Playoff title game, and SVP of ESPN Research Flora Kelly points out: “This number was reached on ESPN’s cable networks - no ABC distribution. Just let that sink in.” The game peaked at 33.2M and was the second most-watched CFP national championship game ever. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel adds some more context: “It was also the most-watched non-NFL sports event since the Chicago Cubs’ Game 7 win in the 2016 World Series. This year’s championship game was the first since Nielsen began using its new Big Data + Panel methodology, which has produced increased viewership numbers for many sports and live events. An ESPN spokesperson said the broadcast was still up 27% year-over-year using Nielsen’s previous methodology.” (link, link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen described the current state of college football as "intolerable" and "chaotic" due to a lack of governance, citing "pretty obviously violations of the rules" that go unenforced, according to HuskerOnline’s Ben Beecham, who notes Dannen contends the only path to stability is through antitrust protection via Congress or collective bargaining, though he also floated the possibility of conferences governing themselves. On the addition of women's flag football as a varsity sport (beginning spring 2028), Dannen said: “If you look at how we are from a Title IX standpoint, you either reduce male opportunities or enhance female opportunities. So in Nebraska, the question is not to reduce, but it is to expand.” (link)

The DI Board of Directors has adopted a proposal amending the required voting threshold for rules changes involving membership requirements for Division I schools. Effective immediately, any alterations to rules governing DI membership “must be adopted by a majority that is greater than the number of votes that could be cast by representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference, including student-athlete representatives. … The new voting requirements are a direct response to feedback and concerns from member schools since August.” They guarantee that at the conclusion of a five-year period specifying no changes be made to DI membership requirements, “membership requirements still cannot be changed without the support of at least one nonautonomy conference or voting representative.” (link)

In his latest fan Q&A, SoonerScoop’s George Stoia, in response to a question about whether he could provide any names or a short list from the current Oklahoma AD search, remarks: “I really can’t. There have been some names floated out there, but nothing definitive. What I will say is that I believe an announcement could happen any day now. I think they know who they want to hire and are just waiting on the Board of Regents’ approval. So, don’t be surprised if we have news very soon. I would also say that I’ve heard it will be an out-of-the-box hire, but someone who most recently worked in college athletics — specifically at another Power Four institution. Someone who may not have always worked in collegiate athletics but has for the last few years and has a strong background in contract negotiating.” More. (link)

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen appeared on the Hot Mic with Dom Izzo podcast to discuss his recent trip to the NCAA Convention as a DI Cabinet member, the challenges over eligibility rules in college sports and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On the need for more outlined eligibility rules: “Honestly, our biggest challenge is we need to have eligibility rules that we can enforce and hold institutions accountable too. So, whether that's Congress supporting that at some level, and there's been a lot of lobbying to Congress, or whether or not as a DI Cabinet or as an organization, we can create defensible eligibility models as we move forward. Those are the things that we're tackling, but that is front of mind for NCAA staff, for the DI Cabinet, a lot of ADs across the country and presidents of how do we solve that piece, because the ripple effect from getting that in place will help in a lot of ways.”
➤ What’s NDSU’s current position on FBS or Mountain West football?: “I would say in terms of our position, I think both myself and President [David] Cook, we want to play at the highest level. And right now, the highest level is FBS football. And so, I think the things that we've done over the course of the last decade have positioned us to be able to do that. And if there's an opportunity, I think it's something we would absolutely explore. If there's not an opportunity, we're poised to continue competing at FCS at a really, really high level and compete for championships. So I would say in terms of our position, it hasn't changed at all. And our interest of at least exploring that is as strong as it's ever been.”
➤ Asked if the FCS would potentially sign off on the nine-game football redshirt rule: “That came out of the AFCA Convention, the coaches meeting. That's not something that has been talked about nationally at a high level right now. I think there'd have to be a lot of conversation that would go into that, the pros, the cons, pluses, minuses, all of those things. I would be hard pressed to think that we would see that this fall, but again, we’ll see.” More from Larsen. (link)

LSU reported total FY25 net revenue of $3.8M, representing the athletic department’s most profitable year since 2022, according to the Lafayette Daily Advertiser’s Cory Diaz. Overall, the Bayou Bengals generated just north of $223M across all sports, while its total operating expenses came out to $219.6M. The greatest YOY differences occurred with the men's basketball team's contribution dropping almost $200K, while sports such as men's and women's track and field, men's and women's golf and swimming and diving also witnessed decreases. LSU Football generated $66.8M in revenue, $14M above its total from the previous year. The school also doled out $44.5M for coaches' salaries, benefits and bonuses with the largest chunk of that spent on the football coaching staff ($21.6M). LSU paid former HC Brian Kelly $10.79M, while AC pay was higher at $10.82M. More. (link)

Louisville receives a $2M gift from supporters Isac and Carrie Roths to support modernization of the lighting system at L&N Stadium, per WDRB’s Eric Crawford, who notes the UofL Athletic Association Board has now approved the project, which will be funded in large part through the Roths’ 10-year commitment. Crawford: “The lighting upgrades will replace much of the original system installed when the stadium opened in 1998. Only the east-side lights were updated during a 2010 expansion. Now, the entire venue will be brought in line with Power 4 college football standards thanks to an LED-based system that's expected to improve visibility, safety and the in-game atmosphere. The interactive lighting system will also allow for more advanced visual effects during games and events, enhancing the overall fan experience.” (link)

Wisconsin’s new updated outfitter deal with Under Armour running through June 2033 provides identical performance bonuses for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes the programs receive $250K if either wins their respective NCAA title and $50K for a Big Ten Tournament crown. This arrangement marks a departure from the existing deal dating to 2016 with Under Armour, which awarded the women around half the bonus compensation available to their male counterparts. Libit: “The new Under Armour agreement eliminates the leniency that had been afforded to women’s basketball in the event of NCAA sanctions. … Under the new agreement, brand-limiting NCAA punishments against [football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball] would trigger the same 30% reduction, while men’s hockey would be subject to a smaller, 20% cut. … The annual rights fee declines from $4M to $3.8M, though that reduction is largely offset—at least on paper—by an annual $75K marketing payment and an additional $175K per year earmarked for Badger athlete NIL. … The new deal provides a flat, annual $3.2M product allowance based on the wholesale pricing of the jerseys and apparel. … The agreement also contains language addressing the potential that the NCAA allows schools to sell corporate sponsorship patches on their teams’ jerseys.” More. The Federal Trade Commission is turning to the Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act (SPARTA) of 2004 to investigate sports agents who sign student-athletes to agency contracts, per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes the “move signals the FTC’s heightened interest in an industry undergoing rapid change, where college athletes have expanded opportunities to earn compensation and where, unlike in pro sports, agents aren’t licensed by a players’ union.” Former FTC Commissioner/Lodestar Law and Economics Founder Joshua Wright observes the move is consistent with Trump administration priorities, remarking: “The Trump administration has demonstrated serious interest in the quickly evolving college athletics landscape. It is no surprise to see that interest manifested in an FTC inquiry aimed at ensuring student athletes are not taken advantage of by agents or their representatives. [This] is a role that fits well within the FTC’s traditional consumer protection mission, and I would not be surprised to see the FTC’s presence in this space expand as needed over time.” More.
