Maine AD Jude Killy received an extension back in September that could keep him in Orono through June of 2030. Killy’s base pay increased from $250K to $300K as part of the deal with subsequent 4% annual increases. There’s also a yearly $25K retention bonus (in addition to the standard slew of smaller bonuses for academic & competition achievements), plus the opportunity for an automatic two-year extension should he complete the Athletics Master Plan, if Men’s or Women’s Hockey make the Frozen Four or if Men’s Basketball qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Finally, if the institution moves to replace Killy at any point it would owe him one year’s salary. If Killy were to exit before the end of June 2027, he’d owe $300K, though after that date he’d owe $10 (yes, $10). All per CollegeAD. (link)

Clemson brass provided a detailed account of what they say is obvious tampering by the Ole Miss Football program in relation to Cal-to-Clemson-to-Ole Miss transfer linebacker Luke Ferrelli for a reported doubling of Ferrelli’s $1M deal with the Tigers after he was already on campus. Clemson AD Graham Neff: “There are always going to be bad actors … being able to enforce rules is key to this industry.” Neff also said Clemson is prepared to take further legal action, if necessary, and is also ready to sign the CSC’s participation agreement. Of note from Tigers HC Dabo Swinney: “Listen, this guy has been a head coach for four weeks. I said, ‘You reach out to the GM. I’m going to give him some grace. And you let him know that we know what’s going on, and if he doesn’t cease communication, I’m going to turn him in.’ I really thought that would be the end of it, but it wasn’t. …I wanna challenge all those coaches that have reached out to me. You need to step up and call it out. Otherwise…shut your mouth and don’t complain again.” (link, link); Watch Swinney’s full breakdown of the situation. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne provided additional perspective on the Charles Bediako situation for his Men’s Basketball program. In part: “There are many programs across the country with former G League and EuroLeague players on their rosters who have been deemed eligible. At the end of the day, these are men with professional basketball experience that are now playing in college. The distinctions between those cases and Charles’ situation are without real differences. A professional contract should be a professional contract. Why should a student-athlete who earned millions competing professionally overseas be eligible to return to college, while someone earning $50K annually in the NBA G League is not? Similarly, an athlete who leaves high school for professional basketball returning to college later is okay, while a student who entered the draft during college, perhaps based on incomplete or poor advice, may be barred. These distinctions are impossible to explain, undermine confidence in the system and do not meaningfully advance the educational mission of college athletics.” (link)

Meanwhile, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt released a statement after a call with NABC members that centered on existing rules & rationale for pre- and post-NBA Draft eligibility: “If these rules surrounding the NCAA pre- and post-draft rules cannot be enforced, it would create an unstable environment for the student-athletes, schools building a roster for the following season and the NBA. The NCAA membership has a set of rules in place regarding the pre- and post-NBA draft eligibility that have clearly been in place and supported by all parties until these recent court challenges.” (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski downplays the likelihood of further Big Ten expansion, telling Gold & Black’s Tom Dienhart that the current 18-team structure is stable unless the national environment becomes "fractured" to the point where "we feel like we need to do our own thing." Bobinski: “There’s just not teams that are going to add value equivalent to what they would take from the whole. We are 18 members now, we each share 1/18 of the annual revenue pot. If you bring somebody in, they’ve got to pay for themselves, plus keep everybody else whole. It’s a pretty tall order. So, who’s going to really add that kind of value? We all know who the one (Notre Dame) is. I don’t need to say it, but that’s a different conversation." (link)

New Mexico is requesting $5M in state funding to begin a long-awaited facelift to its 65-year-old University Stadium. According to documents shared with the Albuquerque Journal, “The funding would modernize “University Stadium’s most critical systems,” including expanding and adding restroom fixtures, widening concourses and renovating entrances on the north side of the stadium.” It would be the first of five planned phases of renovation for the facility, which has not received a large-scale facelift since opening in 1960. Also from the shared docs: “A winning football season has reignited fan energy, campus pride and community momentum, while long-deferred renovations have left the stadium behind modern standards. Renovating in place is the most responsible and cost-effective path forward … transforming this landmark into a year-round, multi-use destination that advances UNM’s statewide mission, strengthens athletics and delivers lasting benefits for all of New Mexico.” (link)

Hawai’i is seeking legislative support during the 2026 session to “strengthen its athletics program and ensure long-term stability for student-athletes in a rapidly changing national college sports landscape that includes name, image and likeness (NIL).” UH is requesting a combined $22.3M in operating and capital improvement funding, including $15M in operating support and $7.3M for athletics-related capital improvements. The operating request includes $10.08M to support core areas such as nutrition, recruiting, travel, equipment, medical care, academic support and routine facility maintenance. The proposal also includes $5M to establish an institutional NIL program. Rainbow Warriors AD Matt Elliott: “College athletics has changed, and our objective is to adapt in a way that reflects the values of this university and this state. Our goal is to provide a stable, student-centered foundation that supports academic success, competitive excellence and responsible NIL program opportunities, while continuing to do our part through fundraising and community partnerships to ensure UH Mānoa Athletics remains 'Our Team. Hawaiʻi's Team.'” (link)

All told, Louisiana will have cut 25% of its athletics staff, or 35 positions, amid a university-wide financial crisis. The Ragin Cajuns initially reduced expenses from $46M to $42.7M by leaving positions vacant and cutting operational budgets, but are now being asked by campus to do more. UL AD Bryan Maggard: “We are all in this together. We absolutely know we're one team, as a university, and we're working very hard to try to meet our financial goals.” UL reported a $12.6M deficit in FY24 and ranked seventh out of 14 Sun Belt schools in revenue generation without institutional support ($14.6M) and seventh in total expenses ($46.1M). When it comes to institutional support, UL drops to No. 12 out of 14 at $18.9M – only better than Southern Miss and Louisiana Monroe. The gap leaves UL nearly $9M below the Sun Belt average of $27.7M in institutional support. (link)

The Friday edition of CRO.ticker is fresh off the press and hot enough to burn your fingers. Sponcon Sports Founder Alex Kopilow highlights social media posts as a missed opportunity in college athletics monetization, Retail Brew’s Jeena Sharma profiles the Australian Open’s aggressive commercial strategy, which may be duplicable by your athletic department, and Fast Company’s Jeff Beer profiles New Balance's ascent as a "boutique challenger brand," highlighted by the signing of Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg. Also, Deloitte’s 29th Annual Football Money League reveals that the top 20 revenue-generating soccer clubs in the world last year collectively generated a record €12.4B, an 11% increase YoY, led by Real Madrid, which generated roughly 10% of that total alone. Lots more inside. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman notes that while the Big Ten has now won three football national championships in a row, the SEC’s average television audience surged by 49% this season, while the Big Ten’s dropped 11%, with SEC games drawing 2M more viewers. Bachman adds: “Since expansion, SEC games are more competitive, making for better television. The average margin of victory this season was 11.5 points, the tightest in nearly two decades, according to Stats Perform. The average margin in Big Ten games, meanwhile, was nearly 17 points, slightly up from two years ago.” (link)
|
Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill responds: “Takes time for perception to catch up to reality. Longtime perception has obviously been that the SEC runs CFB. After three straight B1G natties that’s changing. B1G probably won’t catch the SEC in ratings next year but this margin will close. Just to go a little further with this, there are two meaningful advantages the SEC has in viewership that are basically independent of on-field performance. One, the current SEC TV deal makes it easier than it used to be to find the best SEC games. Meanwhile the current B1G deal makes it harder than it used to be to find the best B1G games. Two, in general the B1G markets care a lot more about the major pro sports than the SEC markets do, so the time they have available for sports is more fragmented. There are exceptions to that of course but broadly speaking a Minnesota or Washington fan is going to be way, way more invested in NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL than an Arkansas or Ole Miss fan. The B1G markets are bigger, more dynamic and less focused on one thing. Having the best product on the field, which the B1G now obviously does, will help viewership but there are still going to be some meaningful structural advantages for SEC viewership.” (link)
|
ESPN SVP of Research Flora Kelly chimes in: “I agree with Mike on a lot, but I don’t think one title defines ‘product quality.’ Parity matters. The SEC delivers it: more double-ranked matchups in the regular season (23 vs 12) and significantly closer games (13.5 MOV vs 19.9 elsewhere). That’s the weekly product.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay’s postseason viewership was up 30% YoY to an average of 2.4M this football season. The show leading into last Monday night's National Championship drew 2.6M viewers (+45% YoY), while the Peach Bowl semifinal edition attracted 2.9M, the third most-watched postseason episode ever. Notably, the Oklahoma broadcast for the College Football Playoff’s first round surged 87% to 2.6M viewers despite a shorter runtime. ESPN also notes Pat McAfee has now awarded $2.9M to students and $3.35M to charity since his kicking segment's inception. (link)

Oklahoma has officially named Illinois Deputy AD/COO Roger Denny as its next AD. OU also announces that Randall Stephenson, the former AT&T CEO who has served as Chair and Special Advisor to the President for OU Athletics since 2024, will remain in that position. President Joseph Harroz Jr.: “College athletics is undergoing profound disruption that requires us to think well beyond conventional structures and roles. In Roger we have the next natural leader who understands both the complexity of the moment and the opportunities it presents. It is clear Roger will advance the bold vision needed for OU to continue leading in a highly dynamic environment. We have already seen the transformational difference Randall has made to OU Athletics with the success of football this past season. His continued engagement will ensure a smooth leadership transition to a new era of Sooner athletics.” ESPN’s Pete Thamel first broke the news. (link)

College Football Playoff Clarity…
➤ The College Football Playoff will continue the 12-team format for the 2026-27 season. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark: "After ongoing discussion about the 12-team playoff format, the decision was made to continue with the current structure. This will give the Management Committee additional time to review the 12-team format, so they can better assess the need for potential change. While they all agree the current format has brought more excitement to college football and has given more schools a real shot in the postseason, another year of evaluation will be helpful." (link)
➤ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the Big Ten and SEC remain at an impasse on College Football Playoff format negotiations, adding: “Commissioners of the other leagues, as well as Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua… have publicly supported the 16-team version, though many are open (including the SEC) to future discussions around 20+ team formats. However, many committee members believe that the next evolution of the playoff should be an addition of four teams instead of doubling the field – a wholesale change that would necessitate the elimination of conference championship games and create other calendar changes. A compromise was discussed among the four A4 commissioners that would have expanded the field to 16 for a set number of years before officials agree to shift to a 24-team bracket – a long-term guarantee that the SEC was against making in such an unpredictable environment. Just because commissioners did not reach an agreement for a format change in 2026, does not mean that the expansion conversation for future years is over. In fact, negotiations are expected to continue.”
➤ Dellenger also notes that 2026 is the first year of the CFP’s new six-year contract with ESPN. “Also, this year begins the CFP’s new revenue distribution structure, where schools no longer earn distribution based on CFP wins. Instead, each league is distributed a base payout, which is heavily skewed to the SEC & Big Ten (they get a combined 58% of annual revenue).” (link)
➤ The deadline to expand for the 2027 playoff is December 1, 2026. (link)

The DI Cabinet has approved a rule change allowing programs to place additional commercial logos on uniforms, equipment, and apparel for regular season and preseason competition, effective Aug. 1. Teams will be permitted up to two patches on uniforms (max four square inches each) and one on equipment, with an extra logo allowed for conference championships. Cabinet Chair/Illinois AD Josh Whitman framed the move as a commitment to "drive additional revenues and fully fund" increased athlete benefits in the modern era. The Cabinet also supported exploring policies to allow commercial patches during NCAA Championships in the future. (link)

“We are planning to play him. He's eligible to play. We're going to follow the court orders.” Alabama Men’s Basketball HC Nate Oats had that to say about Charles Bediako’s return to the team, adding: “Since the NCAA has already allowed professionals to play… you tell me how I’m supposed to not support Charles and the team when he’s been told he’s able to play.” (link)
|
The NCAA and DI members of the NABC board have a call set for this (Friday) afternoon in response to the Charles Bediako situation, the NABC confirms to Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney, who explains the “NCAA requested the call to share info, answer questions and clear up misconceptions about the situation.” (link)

Washington reported a $5.9M operating deficit for FY25 on $178.4M in revenue and $184.3M in expenses, deviating from projections due to a $3.6M drop in ticket sales ($31.1M total) and the absence of one-time coaching buyout windfalls that bolstered FY24, according to On Montlake’s Christian Caple. Media rights totaled $30M in the first Big Ten year, while contributions hit a record $52.8M. Expenses were led by coaching ($35.5M) and administrative ($35M) compensation, with athlete meals jumping to $9.4M following the opening of a new dining hall. Football travel costs nearly doubled to $4.9M, contributing to a program-specific surplus of $40.4M (down from $43.5M). The department also distributed $1.98M in Alston benefits and received $10.7M in direct institutional support. (link)

Massachusetts remains the most heavily subsidized public department in the FBS, with student fees and institutional support covering 84% of its FY25 budget—totaling $60.2M out of $71.2M in operating expenses, Sportico's Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit report. The Minutemen spent $15.9M on football operations (up 38% YoY). A university spokesperson attributed $7.4M of the subsidy to one-time costs associated with exiting the Atlantic 10, joining the MAC, and revenue cuts from the House settlement. Novy-Williams and Libit also note that “to be sure, the NCAA’s Membership Financial Reporting System gives schools latitude in how they account for such categories as ‘indirect institutional support,’ making perfect apples-to-apples comparisons difficult, if not impossible. Year-to-year contingencies within institutions add another layer of complexity when trying to read trend lines.” (link)

(link) ➤ The Athletic’s Austin Meek shares a look at Michigan Football HC Kyle Whittingham’s MOU with the Wolverines, which includes an average of $8.2M per year, “with Michigan on the hook for 75% of the remaining value if Whittingham is fired before the end of the five-year deal. Also a $2.3M signing bonus at Warde Manuel’s ‘reasonable discretion.’” (link)

Duke QB Darian Mensah has filed an emergency motion requesting his preliminary injunction hearing be moved to today (Friday, Jan. 23), arguing that enrollment deadlines at prospective schools—notably Miami (FL)—are set to expire. Mensah, who signed a two-year, $4M annual contract with Duke in July 2024, is currently barred by a TRO from enrolling elsewhere and states in an affidavit that “deadlines at other collegiate institutions who have indicated to me their interest in my enrollment will expire on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.”); According to WRAL’s Brian Murphy reports Mensah’s preliminary injunction hearing appears to have been moved up to Thursday, January 29. The NCAA has filed a petition for a "writ of mandamus" with the Alabama Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a DeKalb County judge's ruling that granted former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt a temporary injunction against his six-year show-cause order. The lower court's December ruling effectively allowed Pruitt—banned until 2029 for "aggravated" recruiting violations involving cash payments—to return to collegiate coaching immediately, with Judge Andrew J. Hairston arguing the NCAA would suffer "no immediate harm." Pruitt, who has spent the last two years coaching high school in Rainsville, AL, also has a pending $100M lawsuit against the association. AL.com’s Creg Stephenson notes that “as of midday Friday, the NCAA petition was listed as ‘unavailable’ on the Alabama Appellate Courts website.” (link)

Brown will elevate men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s squash from club to varsity status, effective July 1. From the release: “A key component of the teams' transition is a new financial model that will ensure the long-term sustainability of Brown's golf and squash programs, with the move to varsity enabling each team to operate as a fully donor-funded program.” Bears AD Grace Calhoun: “Our goal is to provide a championship-caliber experience for our varsity student-athletes. From world-class facilities and coaches to new partnerships, these teams now have the necessary elements to compete successfully at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics, supported by generous donors willing to invest in a varsity program. … This shifting national landscape positions a university like Brown, which continues to invest in these important sports with the full support of its generous donors, for competitive success. These teams have outperformed expectations at the club level, and we're confident they will compete successfully with varsity programs nationally." Club directors Arthur Gaskin (squash) and Jason Calhoun (golf) will coach the teams. (link)
