The DI Board of Directors has adopted a proposal amending the required voting threshold for rules changes involving membership requirements for Division I schools. Effective immediately, any alterations to rules governing DI membership “must be adopted by a majority that is greater than the number of votes that could be cast by representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference, including student-athlete representatives. … The new voting requirements are a direct response to feedback and concerns from member schools since August.” They guarantee that at the conclusion of a five-year period specifying no changes be made to DI membership requirements, “membership requirements still cannot be changed without the support of at least one nonautonomy conference or voting representative.” (link)

In his latest fan Q&A, SoonerScoop’s George Stoia, in response to a question about whether he could provide any names or a short list from the current Oklahoma AD search, remarks: “I really can’t. There have been some names floated out there, but nothing definitive. What I will say is that I believe an announcement could happen any day now. I think they know who they want to hire and are just waiting on the Board of Regents’ approval. So, don’t be surprised if we have news very soon. I would also say that I’ve heard it will be an out-of-the-box hire, but someone who most recently worked in college athletics — specifically at another Power Four institution. Someone who may not have always worked in collegiate athletics but has for the last few years and has a strong background in contract negotiating.” More. (link)

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen appeared on the Hot Mic with Dom Izzo podcast to discuss his recent trip to the NCAA Convention as a DI Cabinet member, the challenges over eligibility rules in college sports and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On the need for more outlined eligibility rules: “Honestly, our biggest challenge is we need to have eligibility rules that we can enforce and hold institutions accountable too. So, whether that's Congress supporting that at some level, and there's been a lot of lobbying to Congress, or whether or not as a DI Cabinet or as an organization, we can create defensible eligibility models as we move forward. Those are the things that we're tackling, but that is front of mind for NCAA staff, for the DI Cabinet, a lot of ADs across the country and presidents of how do we solve that piece, because the ripple effect from getting that in place will help in a lot of ways.”
➤ What’s NDSU’s current position on FBS or Mountain West football?: “I would say in terms of our position, I think both myself and President [David] Cook, we want to play at the highest level. And right now, the highest level is FBS football. And so, I think the things that we've done over the course of the last decade have positioned us to be able to do that. And if there's an opportunity, I think it's something we would absolutely explore. If there's not an opportunity, we're poised to continue competing at FCS at a really, really high level and compete for championships. So I would say in terms of our position, it hasn't changed at all. And our interest of at least exploring that is as strong as it's ever been.”
➤ Asked if the FCS would potentially sign off on the nine-game football redshirt rule: “That came out of the AFCA Convention, the coaches meeting. That's not something that has been talked about nationally at a high level right now. I think there'd have to be a lot of conversation that would go into that, the pros, the cons, pluses, minuses, all of those things. I would be hard pressed to think that we would see that this fall, but again, we’ll see.” More from Larsen. (link)

LSU reported total FY25 net revenue of $3.8M, representing the athletic department’s most profitable year since 2022, according to the Lafayette Daily Advertiser’s Cory Diaz. Overall, the Bayou Bengals generated just north of $223M across all sports, while its total operating expenses came out to $219.6M. The greatest YOY differences occurred with the men's basketball team's contribution dropping almost $200K, while sports such as men's and women's track and field, men's and women's golf and swimming and diving also witnessed decreases. LSU Football generated $66.8M in revenue, $14M above its total from the previous year. The school also doled out $44.5M for coaches' salaries, benefits and bonuses with the largest chunk of that spent on the football coaching staff ($21.6M). LSU paid former HC Brian Kelly $10.79M, while AC pay was higher at $10.82M. More. (link)

Louisville receives a $2M gift from supporters Isac and Carrie Roths to support modernization of the lighting system at L&N Stadium, per WDRB’s Eric Crawford, who notes the UofL Athletic Association Board has now approved the project, which will be funded in large part through the Roths’ 10-year commitment. Crawford: “The lighting upgrades will replace much of the original system installed when the stadium opened in 1998. Only the east-side lights were updated during a 2010 expansion. Now, the entire venue will be brought in line with Power 4 college football standards thanks to an LED-based system that's expected to improve visibility, safety and the in-game atmosphere. The interactive lighting system will also allow for more advanced visual effects during games and events, enhancing the overall fan experience.” (link)

Wisconsin’s new updated outfitter deal with Under Armour running through June 2033 provides identical performance bonuses for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes the programs receive $250K if either wins their respective NCAA title and $50K for a Big Ten Tournament crown. This arrangement marks a departure from the existing deal dating to 2016 with Under Armour, which awarded the women around half the bonus compensation available to their male counterparts. Libit: “The new Under Armour agreement eliminates the leniency that had been afforded to women’s basketball in the event of NCAA sanctions. … Under the new agreement, brand-limiting NCAA punishments against [football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball] would trigger the same 30% reduction, while men’s hockey would be subject to a smaller, 20% cut. … The annual rights fee declines from $4M to $3.8M, though that reduction is largely offset—at least on paper—by an annual $75K marketing payment and an additional $175K per year earmarked for Badger athlete NIL. … The new deal provides a flat, annual $3.2M product allowance based on the wholesale pricing of the jerseys and apparel. … The agreement also contains language addressing the potential that the NCAA allows schools to sell corporate sponsorship patches on their teams’ jerseys.” More. The Federal Trade Commission is turning to the Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act (SPARTA) of 2004 to investigate sports agents who sign student-athletes to agency contracts, per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes the “move signals the FTC’s heightened interest in an industry undergoing rapid change, where college athletes have expanded opportunities to earn compensation and where, unlike in pro sports, agents aren’t licensed by a players’ union.” Former FTC Commissioner/Lodestar Law and Economics Founder Joshua Wright observes the move is consistent with Trump administration priorities, remarking: “The Trump administration has demonstrated serious interest in the quickly evolving college athletics landscape. It is no surprise to see that interest manifested in an FTC inquiry aimed at ensuring student athletes are not taken advantage of by agents or their representatives. [This] is a role that fits well within the FTC’s traditional consumer protection mission, and I would not be surprised to see the FTC’s presence in this space expand as needed over time.” More. South Carolina is reportedly “pursuing a six-figure buyout” from either Alabama or former Gamecocks Football student-athlete Desmond Umeozulu, following his post-contract signing transfer to join the Crimson Tide, per The State’s Jordan Kaye, who mentions a university source didn’t share additional details about his buyout and that it wasn’t immediately known how long Umeozulu’s case could take to reach a resolution. Front Office Sports’ Ben Horney highlights NCAA President Charlie Baker’s surprisingly active and personal presence on X, where he has embraced the role of "reply guy" in between official statements on industry updates. While Baker uses the platform to address serious issues, such as railing against Kalshi's proposed transfer portal betting markets, he frequently intersperses these posts with candid takes on pop culture, citing Clint Eastwood as the best ‘80s action star and wondering why Chester Bennington doesn't get more love on "greatest singer" lists. NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley confirms Baker runs the account himself "constantly, seven days a week," viewing it as a tool to monitor the pulse of student-athletes, coaches, and reporters. Yahoo’s Dan Wolken examines the potential fallout of Indiana's national championship, warning that while the Hoosiers' success might inspire copycats to chase the "next Indiana" blueprint, the reality is that such a transformation is likely a "comet," not a replicable strategy. Wolken notes the financial risk for mid-tier programs attempting to emulate Indiana's heavy football investment—highlighted by HC Curt Cignetti's 8-year, $93M contract and a roster cost potentially hitting $35M annually—and questions whether schools without 100K-seat stadiums can generate a return on that spend. One basketball GM expressed concern that the pressure to double down on football could cannibalize resources for historically strong basketball programs: "Is it a sound business decision to go that route or to invest in our strength and make it profitable? It might make sense for schools to maybe invest more on the basketball side of NIL while everyone is running to football." (link)

The Columbus Dispatch's Adam Jardy reports on Ohio State's struggle to fill the 18,809-seat Schottenstein Center, highlighted by the Jan. 20 win over Minnesota which drew just 8,750 fans—the smallest crowd for a Big Ten game in the arena's 28-year history. Through 11 home games, the Buckeyes are averaging 9,867 attendees, a drop from last season's 11,578 average and potentially the lowest mark on record excluding the COVID year. Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork acknowledges the challenge of selling out in the modern era, questioning whether a consistent crowd of 10-14K might be the new realistic goal for the venue. Bjork also notes that winning is a missing piece: "That’s what’s tough about the last years since we’ve made the NCAA Tournament. That’s what we’ve got to get back to is, we’ve got to be a tournament team and we need to be consistent, because Ohio State has a history of great crowds back in the heyday of Thad Matta. We need to get back to that point where the product on the court is fulfilling where people say, ‘I’m coming, no matter what.’" (link)

Alabama Men’s Basketball HC Nate Oats plans to play Charles Bediako on Saturday at home against Tennessee, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who notes: “This past Saturday in Birmingham, Bediako logged five minutes in a G League game. Texas reported a $23.3M deficit for FY25 despite record-breaking revenue of nearly $353M (up ~$21M), as expenses soared to an institutional record of $376M. CFO Rob Novak attributed the shortfall primarily to receiving a partial SEC revenue share of just $12.5M—compared to the $60.1M distributed to legacy members—due to the terms of their early exit from the Big 12. The deficit was also driven by a $21M drop in media rights revenue following the dissolution of the Longhorn Network, a $15M increase in debt service for facility projects (totaling $94M), and a $23M spike in fundraising/marketing expenses. Despite the loss, Novak noted the department retains over $30M in reserves and saw ticket revenue jump $10M thanks to marquee SEC home games. Football remained the lone profitable sport, generating a surplus of nearly $107M, while men's basketball lost nearly $5M due to coaching buyout costs. More from the Austin American-Statesman’s David Eckert. (link)

Missouri reduced its budget deficit to $9.1M in FY25 (down from $15.2M) while setting records for revenue ($181.9M, +8.3%) and expenses ($191M, +4.3%). Additionally, Tigers’ AD Laird Veatch's first full fiscal year saw a 26.5% uptick in donations to over $46M to surpass media rights as the largest revenue source. More nuggets…
➤ Mizzou experienced a spike in marketing expenses to $34.6M (up from $12.9M), driven by roughly $31.7M in NIL payments routed through Every True Tiger Brands.
➤ Football ticket sales grew to roughly $16M in 2024 (up from $13.2M during the 2023 season), while men's basketball ticket revenue rose to $5.9M (up from $4.7M).
➤ The university covered the operating shortfall via an internal loan and provided $25.7M in direct institutional support, bringing its total contribution to $34.8M (down from $40.9M). Veatch: "This fiscal year that we're referencing, you think about it from a growth standpoint, that really had more to do with volume. It was the continued sellout streak related to football, we had really good attendance in men's basketball, some of our other sports. So that was more about an increase…that you saw reflected by volume. At the end of this fiscal period, at this point next year reporting back, we'll look back and see increases related to those prices as well. "So over a two-year team, we're taking a really substantial step toward closing that gap (with other schools in the SEC)." (link)

Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and VP of Consulting Charles Rolston discuss what athletic departments should be doing now to prepare for the wave of private capital investment across the industry. Here are the biggest takeaways from Maestas:
➤ On the ROI of various capital deployments: "I'll start with revenue infrastructure CRM ticketing data. … Things along these lines can have a 13-20x return. ... Sales tech, sales support, sales infrastructure, premium inventory. Everybody knows this is a place to find more money, but what is it? It's probably 3-4x. ... Revenue generating staff. This is an obvious one. Ticket salespeople – we typically see about 3x fundraisers, about 4x changes to comp structure about 5x."
➤ On the biggest mistake schools will make with private capital: "It's how you deploy it. How you spend the money is number one. That's my number one fear. ... One of my fears of the Big Ten deal that you just referenced was we talked to many of those universities and a lot of them are going to use a lot or most of that money to cover for a shortfall. That's not a positive ROI investment. You're just covering for losses."
➤ On the arbitrage opportunity: "We think the average athletic department gets about 57 cents on the dollar out of the marketplace as would a private sports business entity. But college athletics is not a private sports business entity, and we know all the reasons why it's different. So what can you do to make yourself look more investable, to have transparency? Controls, consistency, reliable revenues, good governance.” (link)
