Front Office Sports’ Ben Horney highlights NCAA President Charlie Baker’s surprisingly active and personal presence on X, where he has embraced the role of "reply guy" in between official statements on industry updates. While Baker uses the platform to address serious issues, such as railing against Kalshi's proposed transfer portal betting markets, he frequently intersperses these posts with candid takes on pop culture, citing Clint Eastwood as the best ‘80s action star and wondering why Chester Bennington doesn't get more love on "greatest singer" lists. NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley confirms Baker runs the account himself "constantly, seven days a week," viewing it as a tool to monitor the pulse of student-athletes, coaches, and reporters. Yahoo’s Dan Wolken examines the potential fallout of Indiana's national championship, warning that while the Hoosiers' success might inspire copycats to chase the "next Indiana" blueprint, the reality is that such a transformation is likely a "comet," not a replicable strategy. Wolken notes the financial risk for mid-tier programs attempting to emulate Indiana's heavy football investment—highlighted by HC Curt Cignetti's 8-year, $93M contract and a roster cost potentially hitting $35M annually—and questions whether schools without 100K-seat stadiums can generate a return on that spend. One basketball GM expressed concern that the pressure to double down on football could cannibalize resources for historically strong basketball programs: "Is it a sound business decision to go that route or to invest in our strength and make it profitable? It might make sense for schools to maybe invest more on the basketball side of NIL while everyone is running to football." (link)

The Columbus Dispatch's Adam Jardy reports on Ohio State's struggle to fill the 18,809-seat Schottenstein Center, highlighted by the Jan. 20 win over Minnesota which drew just 8,750 fans—the smallest crowd for a Big Ten game in the arena's 28-year history. Through 11 home games, the Buckeyes are averaging 9,867 attendees, a drop from last season's 11,578 average and potentially the lowest mark on record excluding the COVID year. Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork acknowledges the challenge of selling out in the modern era, questioning whether a consistent crowd of 10-14K might be the new realistic goal for the venue. Bjork also notes that winning is a missing piece: "That’s what’s tough about the last years since we’ve made the NCAA Tournament. That’s what we’ve got to get back to is, we’ve got to be a tournament team and we need to be consistent, because Ohio State has a history of great crowds back in the heyday of Thad Matta. We need to get back to that point where the product on the court is fulfilling where people say, ‘I’m coming, no matter what.’" (link)

Alabama Men’s Basketball HC Nate Oats plans to play Charles Bediako on Saturday at home against Tennessee, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who notes: “This past Saturday in Birmingham, Bediako logged five minutes in a G League game. One week later, he’ll be suiting up for the Crimson Tide.” (link)

Texas reported a $23.3M deficit for FY25 despite record-breaking revenue of nearly $353M (up ~$21M), as expenses soared to an institutional record of $376M. CFO Rob Novak attributed the shortfall primarily to receiving a partial SEC revenue share of just $12.5M—compared to the $60.1M distributed to legacy members—due to the terms of their early exit from the Big 12. The deficit was also driven by a $21M drop in media rights revenue following the dissolution of the Longhorn Network, a $15M increase in debt service for facility projects (totaling $94M), and a $23M spike in fundraising/marketing expenses. Despite the loss, Novak noted the department retains over $30M in reserves and saw ticket revenue jump $10M thanks to marquee SEC home games. Football remained the lone profitable sport, generating a surplus of nearly $107M, while men's basketball lost nearly $5M due to coaching buyout costs. More from the Austin American-Statesman’s David Eckert. (link)

Missouri reduced its budget deficit to $9.1M in FY25 (down from $15.2M) while setting records for revenue ($181.9M, +8.3%) and expenses ($191M, +4.3%). Additionally, Tigers’ AD Laird Veatch's first full fiscal year saw a 26.5% uptick in donations to over $46M to surpass media rights as the largest revenue source. More nuggets…
➤ Mizzou experienced a spike in marketing expenses to $34.6M (up from $12.9M), driven by roughly $31.7M in NIL payments routed through Every True Tiger Brands.
➤ Football ticket sales grew to roughly $16M in 2024 (up from $13.2M during the 2023 season), while men's basketball ticket revenue rose to $5.9M (up from $4.7M).
➤ The university covered the operating shortfall via an internal loan and provided $25.7M in direct institutional support, bringing its total contribution to $34.8M (down from $40.9M). Veatch: "This fiscal year that we're referencing, you think about it from a growth standpoint, that really had more to do with volume. It was the continued sellout streak related to football, we had really good attendance in men's basketball, some of our other sports. So that was more about an increase…that you saw reflected by volume. At the end of this fiscal period, at this point next year reporting back, we'll look back and see increases related to those prices as well. "So over a two-year team, we're taking a really substantial step toward closing that gap (with other schools in the SEC)." (link)

Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and VP of Consulting Charles Rolston discuss what athletic departments should be doing now to prepare for the wave of private capital investment across the industry. Here are the biggest takeaways from Maestas:
➤ On the ROI of various capital deployments: "I'll start with revenue infrastructure CRM ticketing data. … Things along these lines can have a 13-20x return. ... Sales tech, sales support, sales infrastructure, premium inventory. Everybody knows this is a place to find more money, but what is it? It's probably 3-4x. ... Revenue generating staff. This is an obvious one. Ticket salespeople – we typically see about 3x fundraisers, about 4x changes to comp structure about 5x."
➤ On the biggest mistake schools will make with private capital: "It's how you deploy it. How you spend the money is number one. That's my number one fear. ... One of my fears of the Big Ten deal that you just referenced was we talked to many of those universities and a lot of them are going to use a lot or most of that money to cover for a shortfall. That's not a positive ROI investment. You're just covering for losses."
➤ On the arbitrage opportunity: "We think the average athletic department gets about 57 cents on the dollar out of the marketplace as would a private sports business entity. But college athletics is not a private sports business entity, and we know all the reasons why it's different. So what can you do to make yourself look more investable, to have transparency? Controls, consistency, reliable revenues, good governance.” (link)

That amount increases $5K each year. His bonuses for coaching awards were also doubled: Big Ten $5K; Regional $10K, National $12.5K.” (link)

Juniata (DIII) President Jim Troha has been named vice chair of the NCAA Board of Governors through 2027. Troha: “The issues facing college athletics are real and profound, and I will do whatever I can to help the NCAA thrive in a really challenging environment. Our student-athletes, particularly, deserve our collective time and attention toward sustaining such a powerful co-curricular campus experience.” (link)

DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy recently visited with The DePaud’s Nick Palazzolo and John Maniatis for a “State of the Union" interview to discuss a wide-range of topics concerning the Blue Demons’ athletic department. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On how university budget cuts affected athletics: “[The cuts] affected us greatly. I think we might've had the biggest cuts of any unit on campus just based on how we're built. We have a huge operating budget and everybody had to do their part. We also have staff and people that were affected as well. And so, unfortunately, it did affect us, but just like the rest of the university, we have to push forward. … DePaul's been a place where we've been really good at doing more with less. We had one hand tied behind our back. … I've shifted that in our department to where we have to do less, but we have to do it well. We've got to be more efficient.. … I didn't impact individual student-athletes, scholarships are operating from our team budgets. We trimmed our budgets over $2M in cuts and things that wouldn't directly affect the student-athlete as much, but it's a lot of heartache, and losing people was a big part of those cuts as well. … It's a tough time.”
➤ On the recent point-shaving scandal involving former DePaul student-athletes: “It's just really disappointing if the allegations are true, especially because the integrity of the game is at stake and we have zero tolerance for any of that type of stuff. … I'm also not aware of any systemic issues. That's the first thing I went to. Once you start dealing with the issue, you start looking at, okay, what could we have done? What other things can be put in place? But you start realizing this is a massive national case that involves both pro sports and college sports and involves a large number of schools. … We have extensive education and monitoring already in place. We partner with an integrity monitor through the Big East Conference prior to all this. And things like this can still happen. You can't prevent everything.”
➤ As for next steps: “We've got to get to work. We got to learn from this. We got to look at even additional ways to help strengthen those systems. Maybe it can't satisfy or fix what happened, but maybe it's something else we could prevent that might be close to that or the inkling that leads to some of those things possibly happening, especially at DePaul. So, I'm working with our staff. I'm also working on putting a subcommittee of the Board of Trustees to kind of just further fortify things, but I also don't want this to distract from the momentum we have right now in this season because it doesn't really directly involve this team, this staff.” (link)

Duke has released a statement regarding its on-going NIL contract dispute with Blue Devils Football student-athlete Darian Mensah: “Mr. Mensah has an existing contract with Duke which the university intends to honor, and we expect he will do the same. The court-ordered temporary restraining order (TRO) issued yesterday ensures he does not violate his contract. The university is committed to supporting all of our student-athletes, while expecting each of them to abide by their contractual obligations.” (link)
|
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports: “Duke is expected to comply with NCAA rules by entering Mensah into the portal soon. However, a judge granted Duke a temporary restraining order prohibiting him from violating his agreement with the school, which includes enrolling at another university and playing football. Duke officials have not entered formal negotiations with Mensah or his representatives over his contract. The school stands by the two-year deal it struck with the QB last year. It pays him roughly $4M annually.” (link)

Former Alabama Men’s Basketball student-athlete Charles Bediako has been granted a temporary restraining order by Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court Judge James H. Roberts, providing him “immediate eligibility to participate in all Alabama men’s basketball activities and games,” per AL.com’s Nick Kelly, who notes the order “will remain in effect by law for 10 days or until a hearing can take place.” A hearing on the preliminary injunction is currently set for Jan. 27. Kelly: “It is possible the request for an injunction is denied at the hearing, making it so Bediako can only play one game — vs. Tennessee on Saturday. Or the court could grant the preliminary injunction, and then there would be no set time frame for the case to be resolved.” In response, the NCAA issued a statement which reads: “These attempts to sidestep NCAA rules and recruit individuals who have finished their time in college or signed NBA contracts are taking away opportunities from high school students. A judge ordering the NCAA let a former NBA player take the court Saturday against actual college student-athletes is exactly why Congress must step in and empower college sports to enforce our eligibility rules.” Full TRO text. (link, link, link)

UConn AD David Benedict reacts to today’s Charles Bediako/TRO ruling news by telling ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “If legally we can’t control or impose NCAA rules in terms of who can play and who can’t, based on a legal decision, the NCAA still has the right to determine what games count toward the NCAA tournament. And what games don’t count. The NCAA has deemed (Charles Bediako) ineligible. Fine, he can play (on a judge’s ruling). It doesn’t mean the games need to count toward the NCAA tournament. Otherwise, throw away the rule book and set it on fire. There are no rules.” (link)

Clemson Football’s Tristan Smith is joining dozens of fellow student-athletes in seeking an injunction allowing him to play an additional season beyond the NCAA timetable to earn NIL money and rev share. Per the complaint, Smith explains “he enrolled in a junior college due to academic challenges that prevented him from playing Division I” and “Clemson sought a waiver to allow him to play another season … [which] included documentation that explained Smith’s academic challenges in high school as the reason he started his college career at a junior college.” Smith’s complaint claims he can earn as much as $600K through revenue share and NIL. Ole Miss Football student-athlete Princewill Umanmielen is officially in the transfer portal and expected to land at LSU, per 247Sports’ Chase Parham, who notes whichever school he chooses “will owe the Rebels ~$550K in buyout compensation.” (link)

Wisconsin Football’s season-ticket price is being lowered ahead of a 2026 campaign that includes just six home games, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who notes listed Camp Randall Stadium prices will fall from $399 to $312 prior to taxes and fees, a 21.8% decrease for a campaign consisting of 14.3% fewer home contests. “Recommended minimum per-seat contribution” levels will remain the same in 2026, however, with donations ranging from nothing for upper-deck corner seats to $550 for lower-level, 50-yard-line seats behind UW’s sideline. Steppe: “Factoring in the per-seat donations, the price drop varies from 9.2% for the nicest seats to 21.8% for the least-valuable seats in the stadium. (Those percentages do not take into account the $15 in fees.) UW also is introducing a new season-ticket offering in sections AA and LL – the sections at the very end on each side of the upper level – at a lower price point. Those tickets will be listed at $240 – or $255 after fees – without any required donation and may be appealing to ‘younger alumni and value-conscious fans.’” (link)

Director of Olympic Sports/Athletic Trainer Dustin Williams as Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Medicine & Athletic Health Care Administrator. (link) ➤ Kansas State Women’s Volleyball HC Jason Mansfield has inked a contract extension that will keep him in Manhattan through 2030, per HuskerMax’s Lincoln Arneal, who notes “Mansfield's salary starts at $260K for the 2026 season and increases $10K for the next three years” for a final total of $290K during the 2029 & 2030 campaigns. Additionally, Mansfield receives “a $100K retention bonus if he is HC on Jan. 31 of 2026 and 2029. He also has bonuses for team success (NCAA tourney = $20K) and individual honors. If he leaves to coach at a different school, his buyout is $100K until the end of 2028 and then drops to $50K. If he leaves to go to another Big 12 school, it is $150K through 2028 and then $100K.” (link) ➤ Wake Forest Women’s Golf HC Kim Lewellen inks a long-term contract extension. (link)
