NCAA SVP of Championships Lynda Tealer joined College.town’s Daniel Gillman at the NCAA Convention to discuss the impact of the NCAA’s restructured governance model, noting that sport oversight committees now manage both championship operations and regulatory policy. Tealer: “The goal really is that a particular sport oversight committee can take a step back, not just run a championship, though that's a heavy lift, but what are the things that impact the sport, they can really sort of be the steward for that particular sport at the collegiate level on a national scale. And it's empowered these folks to really take broad looks at the health of particular sports.” As for the growth of emerging sports for women: “I think for each of those emerging sports, they can point back to when women's volleyball or soccer or softball. Softball probably has sort of the newest tenure, where it started and where it's ended up. I think every sport that comes online can see that trajectory and feel like, you know what, our sport can achieve that as well. We can get it in the high school, so we can get it in the club level. We can grow it at the collegiate level and then have this whole ecosystem around this sport. So, adding a sport is both sort of a recognition of work that's already been done, but also this really cool opportunity to create a whole new trajectory, a whole new fan base and excitement, and bring something new to the table.” (link)

St. Norbert AD/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Cam Fuller joins The D3 Datacast to dive into NPI, bracketing and more. Here are some of Fuller’s most notable takeaways…

➤ Heading into year two of NPI, Fuller is eager to get another year of data to inform any potential changes that would be made to the dials, noting: “Our goal is to get the best basketball teams in the NCAA Tournament field. Now that human element of being able to select is no longer there. However, the human element is still there in building the dials. So I think that's our real goal at the end of the day, that hasn't changed. It's to get the best teams in the field.”

➤ On the value of RACs in this new model, Fuller still sees value in them, pointing to the ability to tap into what is happening in each region, beyond the data, and building and developing relationships.

➤ Looking to this year’s joint championship with DI and DII, the eight standalone Sweet 16 sites create the opportunity to potentially be more creative: “I think it's going to allow us to potentially build the best bracket possible, knowing that there might be less geographic restrictions, there might be less hosting restrictions. We’re also in conversations with the Women's Basketball Committee to see if we could potentially have a situation where, from a Sweet 16 standpoint, we could have a men's and women's game on a Saturday.” That flexibility, Fuller adds, may create more opportunity to protect the top eight seeds, understanding that geography always plays a factor. A pair of updates from the DIII Presidents and Management Council report following meetings in Washington, D.C., during the NCAA Convention. The Presidents Council and Presidents Advisory Group will all meet in person with the DII Executive Board in October to “examine higher education and its impact on college athletics. The meeting is an outcome of Division II’s recently completed operating plan for 2026-32.” The Management Council approved in concept noncontroversial legislation to create two exceptions to the public disclosure restrictions regarding infractions cases: allowing parties to respond to public information in an ongoing case to correct, confirm or deny said information or permitting the national office to share information “if there is an immediate need to prevent harm or to address a potential ongoing violation.” Full report. John Carroll AD/Football HC Brian Polian was introduced in his dual role last week, noting he did not consider it as a possibility until President Al Miciak and Board Chairman Bill Donnelly broached the topic with him during an update after vetting a number of candidates. Polian: “This move is unique in 2026. We probably had 10 fewer sports and 400 fewer athletes (during the DeCarlo era). This is not possible without a great team (in the athletic department). … We’re going to figure it out on the fly. We literally went through the exercise of what Monday through Sunday would look like in the fall, and put it on paper.” More from Polian: “The next step for us is a consistent level of national excellence. I’ve never been so convinced that John Carroll University football can win a national championship. I believe it in my heart.” (link)

Colorado College has received a $1.8M estate gift from Pat Lyon, the wife of the late alumnus George Lyon, a former trustee and 2002 inductee into the CC Athletics Hall of Fame. According to CC, the gift will “immediately enhance the student-athlete experience by supporting: expanded access and opportunity for all student-athletes competing in athletic programs at CC; a broad-based, competitive foundation for CC's athletic programs as roster and scholarship models evolve at the Division I level; and holistic student support, including academic success, career preparedness, wellness, and leadership development.” Tigers AD Lesley Irvine on sharing revenue: “When you think about the commitment to our student-athletes here at CC, it’s not only the (revenue) share piece. That’s one small piece of it. It’s also the scholarship dollars. It’s the Alston funds that we continue to do for academic achievement. … What I would say is we don’t want to lose ourselves in this. We’re not a transfer portal squad, we need guys who are excellent hockey players.” (link, link)
